Alex hated this time of year. It reminded him too much of when he’d been thirteen, and the Christmas he’d spent with his uncle Ian, skiing in Colorado. If Alex had only known at the time that it would be their last Christmas together… But he hadn’t known. He hadn’t known that Ian was a spy, or that he worked for MI6, or that within four months, Ian would be dead.
Jack called Alex a Scrooge because he refused to celebrate Christmas. She went around the house, singing Christmas songs and adding Bah Humbug to the end of each verse, trying to get him to smile. It was really quite funny, but Alex didn’t feel like laughing.
He refused to decorate the house, or buy presents, or send Christmas cards, or do anything that would remind him of how much he was alone now. Sure, he had Jack to take care of him. And he loved her for it, he really did. He wouldn’t have risked his life infiltrating Sayle Enterprises as MI6’s replacement for Ian if it hadn’t been for their threats of prosecuting Jack for overstaying her visa. He’d do anything for her – except celebrate Christmas!
And there was one, and only one, person to blame for his being alone in this world now, one, and only one, person responsible for taking his last living relative away from him: Yassen Gregorovich.
