“See you soon princesita”

***

Maya awoke to another strange dream. why do these get sadder every time I sleep?

She got out of bed, feeling the cold imprint from last night’s tears. These have got to stop.

“¡MAYA! ¡DESPIERTA, OR YOU’LL BE LATE FOR SCHOOL!!” Maya’s mother yelled, laughter could be heard from downstairs, and the fresh smell of eggs & papitas with tortillas got Maya’s stomach growling. She breathed in the wondrous smell of breakfast, finally waking up and jumping out of bed to get dressed.

"OKAY MAMA I'LL BE RIGHT THERE- OOF" she fell as she put her socks on. Moving towards the mirror she got a good look of herself. White uniform, red shawl, and a gold eagle emblem adorned her short stature. She went to the Great Teca Academy, Home of the Golden Eagles and the best school in the country. Her parents were the great principals of Teca, which was convenient for her since she got into a lot of fights, though that didn’t totally save her from trouble.

Maya walked to the bathroom, cleaning up and changing the bandages from her latest fight. She took a good look at herself in the mirror, examining the cuts and scars from previous battles. She smiled, she loved the way it made her look. “Mrrow” Maya looked over to the toilet seat, a black and blonde calico cat. She petted the cat and smiled,

“Buenos Días Chiapa”

“Mrrow :)”

“Come on, let's go get something to eat.” Maya scooped Chiapa up and slid down the stairs to greet her familia.

“Buenos Dias everyone!" She yawned, placing Chiapa by his bowl and filling it with wet cat food. Águila and Balam were bickering while her father stuffed his face with more eggs and papitas. She grabbed a plate and sat down, eating quickly, Chiapa did the same.

“Maya, I need you to pick up the twins after school and watch them. So make sure to come home.” Her mother spoke as she gathered the last of her things needed for work.

“Ay Mama, I already have plans tonight! I told Picchu and Chimi that I’d go watch their game. Plus I already take them to school, why must I pick them up too.” Maya slumped into her seat, she glanced over to her siblings and father, who were currently fighting over the last tortilla.

“Maya, As the oldest, I need you to take care of your younger siblings for me while your Father and I work. Just take them to the game with you. I'm sure Picchu and Chimi would enjoy seeing their favorite pair of twins.” Maya’s mom kissed the twins' cheeks, placing down another plate of tortillas, the three smiled.

“Plus your hermanos did it for you when you were little. I'm sure they'd be proud to see how much you've grown up.” she smiled. Reina, Maya’s mother, always knew how to get her to cave.

Maya sighed, nodding her head in agreement as she put her plate in the sink and grabbed her bag. She signaled her siblings that it was time to go, the twins nodded, finishing the rest of their food. They quickly got their things and kissed Chiapa and their parents goodbye.

“Adiós Niños! Have a good day at school!” Enrico, their father, called out as Reina fixed his tie.

The three walked out and were immediately greeted by Chimi and Araña. The kids greeted each other, walking in front while the teens talked.

“Chiimiiiii. Did you do the homework Mr. Vucub gave us? I didn’t have enough time thanks to last night's student body meeting.” Maya whined, hunching over and being dramatic. Chimi chuckled, tying her hair back into a bun as she rolled her eyes at her friend.

“You know, for someone who’s the student body president, you don’t really do a good job keeping up the image.” Chimi giggled. Maya stuck her tongue out, rolling her eyes and laughing. The girls and kids laughed as they made their way to the elementary school.

***

On the other side of the road, a girl adorned with gold jewelry and face markings had her arm wrapped around a boy with silver hair. The two walked in the shade, though, it didn't do much thanks to their black uniforms. The girl held on tight, both for touch and security as the busy streets were easy to be separated in.

"I still can’t believe we share buildings with that stupid Teca Academy. I aH-!" The girl exclaimed, looking at the person who had the audacity to bump into her, The boy glanced over as well, only to find a short girl in a white Teca uniform looking over at him, surprised. His eyes widened as he saw her, out of attraction or sun, he was unsure but all he knew was that she… looked familiar.

"I am so so sorry! I didn't mean to- ÁGUILA! COME BACK HERE! Chimi can you get,- I am so sorrY- OH!-." The girl quickly left, running after two kids with a girl as pale as snow and another child.

The couple looked at each other in confusion, giving the look of what the hell just happened? the girl scoffed, "Zatz, It's best that we go now, you know how Mr. Chivo gets when we're late." "Okay Acat", he said, letting his girlfriend drag him towards their school.

Chapter Text

"-Zatz are you even listening?"

Zatz looked up at Acat dazed. They had just gotten out of school and were heading off-campus. When they had met up, Acat had spoken first, immediately talking about the day she had had that Zatz wasn’t there for. He zoned out at the beginning of it though, his mind wandering elsewhere as she spoke.

Though he didn’t want to admit that to her. Shaking off his disoriented feeling, he looked back at his girlfriend, whose eyes were full of concern.

"Are you okay mi amor? You seem a little… dazed." She moved in front of him as she spoke, her hand cupping his cheek with a gentle touch. Not a lot of people would think this at first glance but Acat, really, loved her boyfriend Zatz. Thought of him as her whole world. She was the type of girl to plan the rest of her life with someone like him, And he knew that very well.

He looked at her with a smile, appreciating her worry for him.

"I'm fine mi vida, you were saying?" He pulled Acat toward him as he continued to walk.

"I was saying, Since I have a game tonight and we still have a test we needed to study for, We should head to your house. Is that okay?" She spoke as she caught up to Zatz’s side, squeezing his hand as she could tell something was wrong, but she didn’t want to push something that Zatz wasn’t willing to share.

"Yea that's fine, We can just-"

"Hold that thought mi amor. —Hola Papi?... Yea si, I just got out of school… Oh. okay, I'll be there in a few minutes… Okay, love you too, uh-huh. Bye." Acat hung up the phone.

"Change of plans, My Dad needs help at his shop. So… meet me at my house later, okay?" She kissed Zatz’s cheek, looking at him with so much love. Zatz nodded, smiling as Acat left in the opposite direction.

"Well, since I have nothing better to do, I might as well go to the convenience store."

***

“-And now I have to pick up my kid siblings,” Maya complained. She and her group stood by Rico’s locker as he gathered his things. He always took the longest to get his stuff together, so this ended up becoming the common meeting ground for them.

“I thought you liked your siblings? Always gushing about how cute they are.” Chimi said, playing rock-paper-scissors against Picchu and winning vigorously.

“I do but they can get freaking annoying sometimes,” Maya grumbled into a smile as she thought about how cute her baby siblings were.

“Well lucky for you, (or more so your mom), Picchu and I have to be at the field by 5”

“And I have studying with G-Gran Bruja. So I can’t hang out either, but I’ll be done just before the game.” Rico added.

“Well, then that settles it. Maya can go pick up her hermanos and we can do all our things before the game. Now if you'll excuse us, Picchu and I, sigh, need to head over to the other side of the school. Adiós Amigos!”

"Adiós!!!" Picchu and Chimi said as they left to go warm-up for tonight's game.

"Well, I guess I gotta go now. See you at the game!" Maya called out to Rico before she left. He smiled, giving a cheeky glance before calling out, “See you later Princesa!”

Maya turned back to Rico with an annoyed look, she was not a big fan of that name. Thanks to her parents being the principals, she got dubbed ‘The Princess of Teca’ despite being nothing like the stereotypical ‘princesa’ you see in the media.

“Rico! You know I hate that title!” Maya yelled, sticking her tongue out in defiance. Rico did the same, the two now in a silly face war, each one more ridiculous than the last. After a minute the two looked at each other, bashful glances shared between one another and the people around them who thought they were weird. They broke out in awkward laughter, hugging each other one last time before finally parting ways. Rico headed towards the main entrance where Gran Bruja was parked while Maya walked to the side doors closer to where she needed to be.

When she stepped out, the warm Mexican air welcomed her. Despite it being the middle of December, it remained 77 degrees. She pulled her phone out for a quick time check, 3:09, perfect. Just enough time before she had to pick up her siblings and later be murdered by homework and weird kids shows. The only problem was figuring out what to do. Her friends can’t hang out, (obviously) so what was she to do? She paced around the door’s entrance, trying to come up with ideas for her to do. 💡 then it hit her, ‘ might as well go to the convenience store and get some snacks for the game!’ she thought. Maya started to run to the nearest Oxxo, smiling.

I'm not a Mexican citizen or have ever been to Mexico so apologies beforehand if I write anything wrong since I'm not familiar with what it's like over there. If you are from Mexico and would like me to keep the story accurate then it would be a big help if you corrected me in the comments!
