Work Text:
“What are you guys doing?”, Tsuki looked at his fellow third years who were hiding behind the gym. Yamaguchi shushed him aggressively, which was not really something he was prepared for. “Like Kageyama is in alone with the rest of the team?”
“We are having a secret meeting!”, Hinata not-whispered. “Ah.” That didn’t explain anything. Yamaguchi rolled his eyes at Shoyo which earned him a snort from Tsuki. “It’s Kag’s birthday, right?” He looked over his shoulder, as if he expected the other boy to jump out of the bushes and yell at them for slacking during training.
“Yeah? And? I thought he wanted to meet on the weekend?”
“Well…”, Yachi spoke up. “Shoyo and Oikawa-san might be planning a surprise party…”
“Tonight?”
“Well. Tomorrow is a holiday. So, it’s fine.”
“And you guys couldn’t wait for Winter break?”
Yamaguchi shrugged. “You can bring your complaints up with Kags’ boyfriend.”
“I still can’t believe they are dating.”, Tsuki rolled his eyes.
“Jealous that you are single?”
“Shut up, Yamaguchi.”
Hinata interrupted them by, honest to God, hushing Kei back inside. “Go. It’s suspicious if you are also missing.”
“Excuse me? Isn’t it more suspicious that you are skipping practice, Mr. Ace?”
They were bickering for a while, until Yachi put her foot down and pushed half of them back to the gym, where they were confronted with an angry Tobio and a bunch of exhausted highschoolers. (Sometimes Tsuki wished Yachi hadn’t become so competent)
Hinata hadn’t come back to practice until the very end. (Which resulted in more yelling and bickering between the two idiots.)
Tadashi just told them to cut it out as a bunch of first years eyed them nervously. It never seemed to occur to their idiot duo that those kids were now looking up to them.
“Good to know nothing really changed over here, huh?”
Tsuki turned to come eye to eye with one Oikawa Toru, who wore an insufferable grin on his face as well as a casual outfit. (For the fact that the older boy was dating one of his friends teammates, Tsuki only ever saw him in school uniform or jersey.)
When he snapped back to the source of the former captain’s smugness: Kageyama was red as a tomato, darkly staring at his boyfriend. So, he guessed that the pick-up hadn’t been planned. Maybe it was just the attention. Oikawa had a bouquet of flowers he offered Kags with a smug face.
“Hey, Toru-san!”, Hinata, who as usual had no filter shouted.
“You are insufferable…”, Kageyama muttered as he took the present.
“You love it!”, the older play smiled. Then he turned and greeted Hinata almost as enthusiastic as the small ace had. Yachi waved to him timidly, while she helped her other managers with some logistics. The rest of the team was starring.
Oikawa Toru was still wildly known in Miyagi for his talent. So, Tsuki was pretty sure it was just the other’s presence and annoying personality.
Eventually Tadashi did his job as a captain and ushered everyone out to the club room. Tsuki followed the general flow of the team and only caught Hinata giving Oikawa an exaggerated thumbs-up before skipping into place between him and Yamaguchi.
“Tonight, will be fun!”, he commented happily.
Tsuki wasn’t so sure, but he could just not go, right?
___
“You can’t just show up like that?”
Tobio complained adorably. Toru just shrugged, not really bothered by his boyfriend’s outburst of embarrassment. “I’m sorry your uncomfortable. But the team knows about us, so I didn’t see why I couldn’t pick you up for dinner earlier?”
Sighing Tobio leaned in to kiss him, soft and sweet. “I hate being the center of attention.”
“Hmm, except Volleyball.”
“Of course, except Volleyball.”, Tobio shoved him a bit. “And I am sweaty and tired post practice. Did you want to take me out in my school uniform?”
“You look always cute!”, Oikawa tried with a grin and his hand shot up to mess-up Tobio-chan’s hair, who ducked away just in time. “Nice try!” He smelled his flowers, before handing them back to Toru. “Can you wait then? I’ll be quick.” And he hurried to get changed as well.
Oikawa watched him go with a goofy smile.
__
After walking his Tobio home so he could change, (and sharing gossip with Miss Kageyama and Miwa) Toru was leading to the cute little Curry restaurant he had his eyes on for a while. (It never ended too well to try to introduce Tobio to foreign foods) They would get his favorite food and spent some quality time together.
(And Toru would distract him enough for the rest of Karasuno to set up the surprise party)
Now that they were relatively alone, Tobio relaxed into the easy affection Toru so easily gave. And Oikawa being himself, there was a lot to give.
They were holding hands a long time over their meal. Tobio’s hand was warm and soft and perfect. Talking about their days over bites of curry. Toru liked watching Tobio eat his favorite food. Usually, he would just eat whatever without much joy. Favorite foods were a different story.
Right now, their conversation was about Volleyball once more. Toru listened carefully as Tobio explained the disagreement he had with Yamaguchi over the strategy for their last tournament. Toru gave him advise but not without teasing the hell out of him.
He was sad when the food was gone, and their glasses empty and it was time to go. Between school and university and volleyball, he had Tobio rarely to himself these days.
__
There was just chaos going on in the Kageyama house. Tobio’s parents had left an hour or so ago to see friends for the holidays, so it was Miwa-san who opened the door for the Karasuno Volleyball team.
Hinata greeted her as heartly as if she was her own older sister, but even the rest of the third years were timid around her. (Guess they all were hanging out around Tsukishima’s house more).
And just like that Tsuki was pulled into hectic preparation for the party. They were hanging decorations, something he was blackmailed into, just for his height. Yamaguchi was directing the players that had volunteered to bring in the drinks they had bought, while Yachi was making sure the snacks and the cake, she had ordered made it to the kitchen unharmed.
Miwa-san was watching them amused. Maybe she never thought her strait-laced brother would be involved in partying.
Tsuki didn’t dwell on her presence to much as the actual task at hand needed his attention and when they were finishing up a constant trickle of guests arrived. The first ones to knock on the door were Suga and Daichi actually. The two of them hadn’t left the Prefecture for university and came here straight after work.
More former Karsuno players followed as well as a bunch of Seijoh third years.
Maybe Shoyo was right; Maybe tonight would be fun.
____
“Thank you, Toru.”, Tobio said with a lovely blush on his cheeks. “For taking me out even though I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do anything today. I know Shoyo was disappointed that he had to wait for Winter break to celebrate. But my parents can be strict.”
Oikawa shushed him, trying to hide the giddy glee he felt at the knowledge he had over the other.
Both he and Hinata had been nervous to do something nice for Tobio today and given that there was the emperor’s birthday tomorrow as well they had no issue to ask a bunch of friends to come and celebrate Tobio’s birthday tonight.
Oikawa had no issue to sweet-talk the Kageyama’s who wanted to visit friends anyway to use the house for a ‘small get together’ Miwa helped. She was a great sister, but due to her work barley around. Speaking of Miwa-san: Oikawa wouldn’t have been so fast to agree to Karasuno set up the party, if the older Kageyama-sibling hadn’t so readily agreed to keep an eye on them.
Now it he only had to deliver the birthday boy to the surprise party.
“Let me bring you home and then maybe we have a drink…”
“I wanted to practice tomorrow.”
Toru sighed. That was typical Tobio and it had little sense to argue with him when he had his mind set on Volleyball. One of the qualities that ran somewhere between adorable and annoying. Tonight, it might just be a bit of both. Maybe he would change his mind when they actually arrived.
“Fine, but let me come in and spent some time? I don’t want you to spend the rest of your birthday alone.”
Tobio gave him a longsuffering look. “Like I could say no to you…”
Oikawa couldn’t help himself and kissed Tobio-chan another time before letting him open the door to his house. He wanted to savor some more alone time before having to share his boyfriend with all of his friends for the rest of the day…
“Why are you so much more clingy than usual?”
Toru snorted. “I am not clingy.”
“Sure, whatever…”
Kageyama stepped into the living room after putting on his house shoes. His sentence was cut short when he turned the light on and-
“Surprise!”
And was greeted with all of his friends in silly party hats in a decorated room. He snorted: “Are you guys, serious right now?”
“Yes!” Hinata insisted and passed him a blue party hat.
Kageyama turned to Toru who also had been provided with a hat.
“You knew?”
“Of course…”
