Work Text:
Yagi had a guilty habit of listening in on his students’ conversations.
Now, it’s not like he purposely tried to do it. It’s just sometimes the students had many interesting things to say. He was only human, and gossip was gossip. Even he couldn’t resist hearing about the latest drama amongst Class 1-A (and was there a lot of that).
Fortunately, this time it wasn’t the latest scope on one of their fellow classmates, but rather an interesting conversation topic that Yagi heard about way too often.
Soulmates.
In a world filled with quirks, soulmates were also an unknown concept regarding their origins.
It all started when a baby girl from Canada was born, and on her forearm, a name was beautifully printed out. And on the other side of the world, a four-year-old little girl from Korea also received a name in her sleep. The same name of that baby girl was etched onto her skin.
And thus, soulmates began.
Like quirks, it used to only be exclusive to a few people, but eventually, a majority of the population received someone’s name somewhere on their body. It was always a first and last name spelt in the other person’s native language.
Very few people didn’t receive a soulmate. It was less than the Quirkless population.
And today, this topic of conversation seemed to excite some of the members of Class 1-A.
There had already been a few matches made between the first-year students already.
Kaminari Denki quickly discovered after the Sports Festival that his soulmate, Shinso Hitoshi, was attending the same school as him. They got together pretty fast. Even with Shinso’s stubbornness, it was no match for Kaminari’s determination.
Jiro Kyouka had quickly figured out on the first day of school that her soulmate, Yaoyorozu Momo, was in the same class as her. They were currently taking it slow, but they had a strong bond.
Midoriya Izuku was a very unique case for he did not have one name on his person, but two. Midoriya and Bakugo Katsuki had been aware they were soulmates since they were children, but it was very much ignored. The second person on Midoriya was one Todoroki Shoto, and after the events of the Sports Festival, Todoroki slowly began to appreciate having a soulmate.
And then came the competitive nature between Bakugo and Todoroki (relentlessly trying to prove who was the superior soulmate). But that was for a different story.
These were the soulbonds that everyone in Class 1-A were aware of. So of course, the topic for the others whose soulmates they had yet to meet, was--you guessed it--who is your soulmate?
“Huh? Why won’t you tell me their name!” Mina whined to Iida.
Iida rolled his eyes, “Because the matter of a soulmate’s name is private. And I would rather not have everyone in this class knowing who they are. No offence.”
Mina whined in return, but her attention was quickly shifted elsewhere.
“Hey, what about you Tokoyami? What’s the name of your soulmate?” Mina enthusiastically asked as she walked to the desk of the bird-headed boy in question.
Tokoyami was sat at his desk, engaged in a light conversation with Kaminari, Midoriya and Todoroki. They were discussing a fight that had taken place the night before between some pro-heroes and one-off villains.
Tokoyami looked startled to have the attention on him, as everyone in Class 1-A seemed to look at him curiously.
Tokoyami was one of the few students in Class 1-A whose soulmate had yet to be brought up, so of course, people were curious to know who would have the quiet boy’s heart.
“You do not have to answer that Tokoyami-san! The name of your soulmate is yours and yours alone,” Iida said, standing up from his chair.
Tokoyami shrugged in response, “I personally don’t really care whether people know my soulmate’s name or not. Besides, I doubt I will ever meet them.”
Midoriya looked at Tokoyami curiously, “What do you mean by that, Tokoyami-kun?”
Tokoyami sighed quietly as the class (including Yagi secretly) gave the bird-headed boy their attention.
“You are all aware that my brother is Hawks, correct?”
Class 1-A nodded in response. It was very public that Tokoyami and Hawks were siblings after some nosy reporter figured out their secret and exposed it to the public.
“Well, a few years ago, my brother thought it would be a fun surprise if he found my soulmate in the quirk-registered database. He was mostly doing it to get dirt on them, although he likes to ignore that fact if you ask him.”
“Did he find them?” Kaminari cut in. The boy had a curious look on his face.
Tokoyami shook his head, “That’s the thing. Apparently, they didn’t exist.”
The class looked at Tokoyami in confusion. “How is that possible?” Todoroki asked.
Tokoyami shrugged, “No idea. We still haven’t figured it out to this day.”
“What was their name though?” Mina asked again.
“Shimura Tenko,” Tokoyami responded.
The class then proceeded to call out theories on why his soulmate didn’t exist in the system, but all Yagi could hear was his own heartbeat beating loudly in his ears.
He looked up, and both Bakugo and Midoriya seemed to be having twin looks of horror in their eyes.
Millions of thoughts ran through Yagi’s head, but one of them stayed firmly in the front of his mind.
Just because Tokoyami had no idea who his soulmate was, doesn’t mean he didn’t.
Shigaraki Tomura was sitting across from Chisaki Kai, as they discussed their plans to work together.
Just as their conversation was wrapping up, Shigaraki brought up one more thing he wanted to add to their deal.
“What’s your take on soulmates?” Shigaraki asked the man in front of him.
Chisaki raised a curious eyebrow at him, “I don’t particularly care for them,” he drawled out.
Shigaraki let out a hum in response.
“I didn’t think you were one to care for your own soulmate,” Chisaki added.
Shigaraki shrugged, “I didn’t when I was younger, but Father eventually convinced me how useful it would be to have the person who was literally made for me, work beside me. And well, I just haven’t been able to get that thought out of my head since.”
Chisaki shifted in his seat, “Why the sudden discussion of soulmates?” he asked.
“Because, if I’m going to loan you some of my team, I’m going to need a little compensation in return.”
Chisaki crossed his arms, “Meaning?”
“I want you to find and kidnap my soulmate for me. The League is already too much in the public eye, so I can’t just go and kidnap them without linking it to me. No, I want to throw the heroes off my trail so that we can be left alone in peace. Or at least until I can convince them to join my side.”
Chisaki titled his head and looked to be considering whether or not it was worth it or not.
But, as he thought about it logically, it didn’t seem too outrageous to comply with Shigaraki’s request.
“What’s their name?” Chisaki asked.
Shigaraki stood up from his seat, and pulled up his shirt, revealing a name etched across his stomach, underneath his belly button.
Takami Fumikage.
Chisaki raised an eyebrow.
“You’re going to kidnap the Number Three Hero’s little brother.”
Chisaki hummed, “Fine. We have a deal.”
Screw the heroes anyway.
