Work Text:
It was only when Mahiru saw how Guren rushed to the dying Shinya‘s side she realised he never really loved her. He maybe wanted to love her, but never did. At least not since he met her adopted brother and fiancé.
It was at that moment she realised what real love, unconditional love looked like. As Guren leaned over and kept on denying the undeniable fact that Shinya was dying. The way tears were flooding all over his face and how they never did when Mahiru had told him she‘d die. The way Shinya, with all the power he had left, reached out and tried to mumble comforting words for Guren. The way he was able to keep Guren human with just speaking. Even if he was speaking nonsense, Guren would listen to every little sound that came out of his stupid mouth.
„I‘m gonna die.“
„No!“
„I am dying.“
„No...“
It were these simple phrases that made her want to cry. The way she was never able to realise how love really worked and that she had and would never experience it. She wanted to cut both of them down right then and there. But then her plan would fail, so she decided against it.
Guren desperately clinging to Shinya and Shinya begging him to let him go, it had something so beautiful in her eyes. It were sincere words, yet one could easily see how much they hurt both of them.
They haven’t gone far, physically speaking. Not shared a romantic night, not even a simple kiss, yet still, Mahiru could feel how much more Shinya mattered. How easily Guren was willing to destroy everything if it‘d safe Shinya. And if it‘d be only those two against the world, they would keep fighting at all cost, just to stay together. Just to protect each other. Just to keep each other going, give them a reason to live. Why was it not her?
It was unfair indeed...
