Only One of Us Dies at the End

Summary:

Jinx had gotten a call from Death-Cast at 2:01 am.

At first, Jinx debated on whether or not she should answer. It was almost hard to believe, and she had to stare at her phone for a few moments for it to really sink in and for her to realize that this was it.

This was the end of all of it.

Or: A fic based off of the book “They Both Die at the End” where Jinx gets a call from Death-Cast but Lux doesn’t. They meet on the Last Friend app and spend Jinx’s last day together. (You don’t have to read the book to read this!)

Notes:

Hey guys! I’ll try and update weekly but I can’t promise anything. You don’t have to read the book to read this, everything will get explained eventually!

Chapter Text

Jinx had gotten a call from Death-Cast at 2:01 am.

At first, Jinx debated on whether or not she should answer. It was almost hard to believe, and she had to stare at her phone for a few moments for it to really sink in and for her to realize that this was it.

This was the end of all of it.

There was no escaping this, so Jinx answered the call and gently put the phone up to her ear, her heartbeat so loud she could barely hear the lady on her phone who was literally just trying to tell her today was her death date.

“Yeah?” Jinx finally said, hating how raspy her voice sounded right now.

“Hello. I’m calling from Death-Cast. This is Claudia calling to speak with Jinx.”

Jinx sat there for a moment, stumped.

This was fucking Death-Cast.

Unsure of what to say, she let out a hum of confirmation and then cleared her throat, shifting uncomfortably in her bed, just waiting for this lady to reply and tell her what she already knew was coming.

“Well, Jinx, I regret to inform you that sometime in the next twenty-four hours you’ll be meeting an untimely death. On behalf of everyone here at Death-Cast, we are so sorry to lose you. Live this day to the fullest.”

That was all Jinx heard, the rest of the lady’s words were drowned out by her quickened heartbeat and obnoxiously loud thoughts.

Eventually, Jinx just hung up and threw her phone to the foot of her bed.

Now, Jinx wasn’t exactly scared about this. She wasn’t scared she was going to die and she wasn’t upset she was going to die. She was just- annoyed, mostly. And caught off guard. It’s not every day you get a call from some random ass person and have them tell you that you’ll be dying later that day, you know? She took a deep breath and laid back, cursing under her breath.

She immediately thought about Vi and Ekko and how they’d react to this information. Maybe it was better if they didn’t know. Vi would probably make her stay home all day and lock her in her room while holding her tightly in her arms. Honestly, that was not how she wanted to spend her last day, so maybe not telling Vi was her best option.

Jinx didn’t really know how Caitlyn would react, and she didn’t really care. Actually, she kind of did want to tell Caitlyn just to see what she thought about it all. If she was glad to find out that Jinx was dying, good! Jinx was glad, too.

Before any more thoughts could engulf her, someone knocked on her door lightly before cracking her door open slightly.

It was Vi, peeking into the room to look at her little sister.

“Hey. Can I come in?” She asked. Jinx nodded and sat up slightly, grabbing her phone from the foot of her bed and stuffing it into her pocket. Vi opened the door all the way before stepping in and closing it behind her. Jinx looked at her expectantly.

“Hey, so, uh, Cait and I are gonna be gone all day tomorrow. You’ll be fine on your own right?” Her older sister wondered, walking over to her bed and sitting down next to Jinx. “Yeah? I think I can handle myself. I’m a big girl, ya know,” Jinx snorted. Vi nudged her sister playfully.

“We’re going to leave early. Around 6 am. You’ll be okay? And will you need anything?” The pink-haired girl worried. “Yes, Vi, I’ll be fine. Where are you guys going, anyways?” Jinx asked out of curiosity, watching as her sister played with a string she pulled from the hem of her shirt. She knew how anxious Vi got when Jinx was home alone, and she wasn’t exactly sure why. But, even if something did happen while she was gone, it didn’t really matter because she was just going to die anyway. She couldn’t tell her sister that though.

“We’re going to visit Caitlyn’s dad. I guess he’s been a bit lonely and Cait’s been missin’ him. You can always call Ekko over if you get lonely while we’re gone. I bet he’d be happy to come over,” Vi told her, shifting her weight and moving a bit closer to Jinx. “I know. I’ll be fine, Vi. I’ve been alone plenty of times. Just have fun with Caitlyn, kay? I can invite Ekko over if it makes you feel better,” Jinx offered, looking up at her sister who was still looking down and playing with the small string. Vi just shook her head, lost in thought. The younger girl let out a small sigh and leaned over to rest her head on her older sister’s shoulder.

“I’ll be fine,” Jinx reassured her again. They were both silent for a few moments before Vi finally sighed and said, “You’re right, I’m sorry. I’ll wake you up before I leave, okay?”

Jinx sat up and removed her head from Vi’s shoulder with a nod, turning her head so she was looking at her sister. Vi smiled and wrapped her arms around Jinx for a quick moment before pulling away and standing up, heading towards the door.

“Goodnight, Jinx,” Vi said right before opening the door. “Night, sis,” Jinx replied, watching as the older girl stepped out of her room and closed the door gently.

Man, Vi was not going to be able to take her death well.

And she wouldn’t even be able to spend her last day with her.

Jinx sighed and picked at her chipping nail polish, trying not to imagine Vi coming home to Jinx dead, or maybe Jinx was out and about when she died and she’ll panic, asking everyone she knows if they’ve seen or heard from her. She’ll track her phone down on their stupid Life360 tracking app and find her dead, or whoever has her phone will have to explain what happened.

Now she didn’t really want to die anymore.

She groaned in frustration as her thoughts started to become too much, and she grabbed her phone out of her pocket. She had no new notifications.

What was she supposed to do now? What were you supposed to do on your last day on Earth? She considered texting Ekko and asking if he wanted to hang, but then she remembered that he had to work overtime tomorrow.

Of course, he did.

Before the tears of anger and frustration could start welling up, she remembered that stupid Last Friend app. The app where you literally just find other people who will die soon like you and then you become friends.

Yeah, Jinx downloaded that stupid fucking app.

Only because she was bored. Not because she actually wanted to find a “last friend”. Obviously.

The download was quick. Super quick. She immediately opened the app and began to answer a bunch of different questions about herself after clicking the “dying today” button.

She skipped a bunch of the questions, not really caring to answer them because after all, she wasn’t on here to actually make friends. She liked messing with people online, so that is exactly what she would do.

No friends.

Chapter Text

1:58 am

Luxanna didn’t get a call from Death-Cast because she wasn’t dying today, but she did have the Last Friend app downloaded on her phone.

Why? She didn’t know. Maybe it was just because she was lonely.

She had broken up with her boyfriend Ezreal yesterday and it had taken a toll on her. She knew it was technically her fault- Ezreal was a very sweet guy who loved Lux more than anything. He was respectful and caring, but Lux just didn’t love him. They had decided to just stay friends, but Lux couldn’t help but feel guilty for this big problem she had caused. They had been together for about a year, and then Lux had to go and ruin it.

And, on their one year anniversary.

Lux spent the rest of the night overthinking the whole situation, and by the time she finally came back to reality, it was almost 2 am.

Lux was never the type of person to stay up this late, so she internally panicked for a moment. Ezreal was always telling her she needed to get to bed early, so she always did. But now… now she didn’t have him. So, she decided she’d stay awake. If she was too tired in the morning, she would just skip school and risk all the worried messages from her friends and the lecturing from her parents. Maybe she could even get Garen to cover for her if she tried hard enough.

Lux sighed and grabbed her phone that was sitting next to her. She hasn’t been on her phone since she called Ezreal and broke up with him… her background was a cute picture of them together that was taken by one of her friends. Ezreal had Lux in a tight hug while Lux was bending down slightly, her arms wrapped around his neck and her lips placing a soft kiss on his forehead. She sighed again when she opened her phone just to see the same picture as her Home Screen wallpaper.

But she pushed down all the feelings that came bubbling up. This had been her decision and she only had herself to blame. Quickly, she clicked on her photos app and began going through her pictures to find one to set as her new background and replace her current one.

There were many pictures that almost brought tears to her eyes that she would have to delete later when she wasn’t feeling so emotional about it. The more she looked at the pictures the more guilty she felt, so she made the quick decision to put a picture of her and her horse, Starfire, as her background. It was a cute picture and a good memory. Lux was leaning down onto her neck to pet her after earning a blue ribbon in one of their classes.

Lux exited out of the app to admire her new wallpaper. It was cute, and a faint smile appeared on her lips as she scanned her eyes over the screen. As she did so, her eyes landed on the Last Friend app. The app she had never opened ever and she had no clue why it was downloaded. She could barely even remember downloading it, but there was a faint memory of her and her friends messaging people on there while Lux chickened out, not finding joy in messaging strangers online.

Now the idea seemed exciting. Maybe she could find another cute boy to start talking to, or maybe even a friend. Maybe there was someone who would be dying today and they were scared and needed to talk to someone. Lux opened the app.

The first question that pops up is easy. Is she dying today or is she not? She’s not, so she clicks “not dying today”.

Then a blank profile popped up. Lux looked over all of it before filling it in.

Name: Luxanna Crownguard

Age: 18

Gender: Female

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 161 lbs.

Ethnicity: White

Orientation: Bisexual

Job: <skip>

Interests: Studying, horseback riding

Favorite Movies/TV Shows/Books: <skip>

Who You Are in Life: <skip>

Bucket List: <skip>

Once she was satisfied, she went into her camera roll and chose the same picture she had put as her background for her profile picture.

Now that her profile was set up, she was ready to start talking to strangers online. Wow.

There were 36 people online that lived near her. Messages from people had already started to pop up, so she checked her inbox. They were just from random men. One sent a porn link and the other two were asking her to buy drugs from them. She simply blocked them and continued to look at other people’s profiles.

Some of them were interesting. There was an 18-year-old girl named Andrea who lived 6 miles away. Today was her End Day, and she seemed sweet based on her profile picture which was a picture of her laying down with a cat snuggled up on her chest, a big smile on her face.

Luxanna: Hello! I like your cat.

Andrea: thank you :)

Luxanna: You’re welcome! How are you doing?

Andrea: fine, aside from the fact that i’m going to be dying today hahah

Luxanna: Oh, I’m sorry about that :(

Andrea: it’s fine, i’m high asf right now lmao so it’s okay. wanna come over? i have pot

Luxanna: No thank you.

Lux exited out of their chat and blocked the girl. If all these people on here were just going to try and get her to do drugs then she’d just delete the app.

She got a lot of messages from even more men. She didn’t reply to any of them, their odd and inappropriate messages making her uncomfortable.

She decided to scroll through the rest of the people online before closing the app and actually doing something with her life, possibly sleeping since she really did have classes tomorrow and she really shouldn’t miss any of them.

None of them seemed interesting to her, most of them just drug addicts or weird old men, not people who were actually dying soon and in need of a friend.

The last profile she scrolled down to was a girl the same age as her and only 3 miles away. There wasn’t much information in her profile, as she had skipped a bunch of the questions. Lux was about to close the app before she a got message from the same girl.

Jinx: hey.

Chapter 3

Notes:

It’s 4 am and I’m tired

Chapter Text

Man, the people on here were funny.

So many men sending nudes, porn links, and sugar baby applications. So many women sending nudes, porn links, and just genuinely sweet messages that Jinx almost felt bad about replying to with jokes.

Some people did have genuinely interesting profiles. She considered messaging a few of them but then she had remembered what she told herself. No friends. She didn’t even need friends, there was no reason for her to start seeking out a friendship when she was just going to die later. It was a waste of time for her and the other person.

There was, however, one girl whose interests were “studying and horseback riding”. Oh, Jinx definitely had to message her. Who studies for fun? Not Jinx, that’s for sure. She was the same age as Jinx and she lived really close. And apparently she was also bisexual, too. Jinx grinned and tapped on her profile to send her a message.

Jinx: hey.

Luxanna: Hello!

Jinx: sooo, your interest is studying?

Luxanna: I wouldn’t say interest. It’s just what I do in my free time.

Jinx: damn girl, you little miss perfect or something?

Luxanna: Far from it.

Jinx: doubt. you’re a better person than me for actually studying lol. you a horsie girl?

Luxanna: Equestrian.

Jinx: isn’t that just the fancy word for horsie girl

Luxanna: No, actually. It means the sport of riding horses.

Jinx: i don’t get your point. we’re saying the same thing

Luxanna: They are two very different things.

Jinx: not rlly

Luxanna: You’re annoying me. Goodbye.

Jinx: noooo i’m sorry equestrian girl, pls don’t block me i’m lonely

The other girl didn’t reply to Jinx’s message, so she threw her phone across her bed like she had after she got the call from Death-Cast.

Maybe she shouldn’t be so upset though. The girl seemed like a priss anyways, and she didn’t really like to talk to people like that. They were always bitches.

But the moment Jinx felt her phone buzz, she scrambled to grab it and look at the notification, hoping it was a message from the girl. She felt giddy with excitement when she realized it was.

Luxanna: I’m sorry. I’m lonely too.

Jinx: sorry for being annoying. i’m just bored. idk how to spend my end day lol

Luxanna: Well, what’s something you’ve always wanted to do?

Jinx: kill my sister’s gf

Luxanna: Oh.

Jinx: joking. but there has to be someone you wanna kill too

Luxanna: Nope.

Jinx: anyone?

Luxanna: No. It’s wrong to think like that.

Jinx: whatever you say, luxanna

Luxanna: Just call me Lux please.

Jinx: whatever you say, lux

Jinx liked this girl. She was easy to annoy, and that’s just the kind of person Jinx enjoyed talking to. The way she typed her responses out like she was absolutely pissed at her- Jinx loved it. But, she was also the type of girl to leave immediately if Jinx got too annoying, so she had to choose her words carefully so she wouldn’t get blocked.

But then, she sent a totally unexpected message a few moments later.

Luxanna: Would you like to video call?

Jinx stared at the message, contemplating. She was already having fun annoying this girl on text, and that was always hard to do on call. But at the same time, Jinx wanted to see what this girl was actually like. Maybe her voice was softer and her responses wouldn’t be as harsh? Or maybe she was just how Jinx imagined her. A snob.

No friends! Jinx would not make any friends on here!

Jinx: sure

The call popped up on her screen quickly. Jinx accepted it.

She was immediately met with a very pretty, angelic girl. Her eyes were light blue and very bright. Her hair was blonde, fluffy and obviously very well kept. She was looking at the screen with a confused puppy dog face until Jinx’s face popped up on her screen.

“Oh! There you are,” she yelped, a small smile forming on her face as she finally laid her eyes on Jinx.

Jinx knew she looked like shit right now. She wasn’t usually the type of person to be overly self-conscious about her appearance, but after she compared herself to this girl she definitely began to judge her own looks harshly. Her eyes looked unfocused and under them were dark bags that she usually just covered with concealer, along with the freckles that dotted her face. But right now she had no make-up on. Dark bags and freckles fully visible, hair a mess, clothes dirty- Jinx cursed under her breath.

“Hey,” Jinx mumbled, watching as Lux moved her camera around a bit so it was at a better angle. “Hello! I really love your freckles,” Lux complimented.

Jinx’s brain just straight stopped working for a moment, trying to process her words and come up with a response.

“Uh…” she muttered out, staring at the screen. Lux watched her in amusement, seeing how she struggled to form a sentence. Eventually, Jinx gave up and just nodded at her, her cheeks flushing in slight embarrassment. Lux let out a soft laugh, and Jinx was now fully convinced this girl was an angel. Her hair flowed so nicely as she moved and her eyes were so bright and full of kindness as she laughed. Her laugh was soft and light. Jinx didn’t know how to explain it. Everything about her was just so angelic and perfect. She stared in awe as the girl did absolutely nothing besides sit there and look at her through the phone.

When Jinx stayed silent, the girl offered her a bright smile of encouragement that made Jinx lose her track of thought even more.

“Umm, so… what are you planning on doing today? Aside from killing your sister’s girlfriend?” Lux asked her, the beautiful smile still plastered on her face. “Uh… nothing,” Jinx answered honestly, her voice sounding low and raspy. She winced at her own voice and decided to clear her throat quietly, feeling even more self-conscious and embarrassed.

“Really? There’s nothing you want to do on your End Day?” Lux wondered, sounding genuinely curious and almost worried. Jinx looked away from her phone and down at her shirt, biting her lower lip before responding with, “I dunno. I was going to spend a little bit of the day with my sister but she has plans.”

Jinx looked back up at her screen and watched as Lux studied her face and frowned. “Does she not know?” Lux asked her quietly. Jinx shook her head, looking down again. She hated how vulnerable she felt in this moment, and she absolutely hated how Lux looked at her with such worry and sadness, but at the same time, it also felt kind of nice. Lux cared. She was a stranger she just started talking to, but she still cared. When Jinx looked up once again to look at the blonde girl, Lux noticed her staring and smiled the same encouraging smile before, urging her on.

“I was gonna hang with one of my friends but he’s working overtime all day. He needs the money right now so I can’t just ask him to hang out, you know? It kinda sucks, but it’s alright,” Jinx rambled. Lux nodded in understanding and her only focus was on what Jinx was saying. Jinx immediately felt guilty for talking too much.

“Enough about me, Blondie, why are you on here?” Jinx wondered, changing the subject abruptly. Lux gave a small shrug. “I broke up with my boyfriend yesterday. I guess I’m still feeling a bit upset about it. It’s strange because I usually never talk to people online. Guess I’m feeling extra lonely,” Lux explained softly, “I guess we’re both lonely.”

Jinx nodded, “I’m sorry about your boyfriend. Men suck ass. Pro tip: don’t date men, only women,” Jinx told her loudly, letting out a small snort of laughter after. She heard Lux laugh too, and a warm feeling flooded her chest.

The two of them sat there in awkward silence for a few seconds, not really sure where to go with the conversation. Jinx looked down and started picking at her nail polish. Lux chewed on her bottom lip, looking away from the screen. Jinx could hear her let out a sigh.

“Um.. maybe you could spend your End Day with me?” Lux offered quietly, her eyes still averted from her phone, “Only if you want, of course. I just thought because we’re both lonely and we both kind of need someone right now. I could be your Last Friend.”

Jinx had nothing better to do.

“Yeah. Yeah, let’s do that. Send me your address, I’ll come pick you up, yeah?” the blue-haired girl asked. “Right now? It’s super late,” Lux said, almost worriedly. Jinx gave a small laugh, “What, you afraid of the dark or something?”

“No, I just-“

“I’m just teasing,” Jinx interrupted, “I’ll come pick you up. Just send me your address in the chat.”

“You won’t come and kill me, right?”

“Girl, you’re the one who wanted to meet up. Plus, as far as I know, you haven’t gotten a call today, so I don’t think I will kill you. Send me the address, Blondie.”

That was all Jinx said before hanging up and instantly checking the chat for Lux’s address. It had taken the other girl a while to send it, most likely because she was hesitating, but once she did send it Jinx immediately stood up and got ready to leave by putting her shoes and a jacket on. With one last glance at her messy room, she opened her door and stepped out, quietly making her way towards the front door of their apartment, trying her hardest not to make any noise that would wake Caitlyn or Vi up.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t too lucky because she heard soft footsteps behind her. She spun around to see who it was, and her eyes landed on Vi who looked half asleep.

“Where are you goin’, Pow? It’s late” She asked, stepping forward a bit more. Jinx looked down, not exactly wanting to tell her sister where she was going and what she was doing. But at the same time, she didn’t want to lie and then be wracked with guilt.

“I’m going to meet with a girl I’ve been talkin’ to…” was all Jinx told her, not looking up to meet her eyes.

“Are you gonna be back by the time I leave?” Vi wondered, her voice filled with worry. She probably wouldn’t be back by the time she left.

“Yeah. I will,” she lied. She tried her hardest not to break down in sobs and just tell her everything even though that would make everything worse. She hated lying. She hated lying so, so much, but there was no way she was going to be able to look her sister in the eyes and tell her she was going to die later and she wouldn’t come back to say bye. Jinx wouldn’t be able to handle that, and Vi definitely wouldn’t be able to either. She’d cancel all her plans just to stay with her… Jinx couldn’t let her do that. Vi needed to leave and just have fun. She deserved it. So, Jinx continued to look down and tell her sister she would be back to say goodbye.

She was a liar.

Chapter 4

Notes:

I’m sorry for not updating, life got in the way 💃 also I’m sorry, this chapter sucks

Chapter Text

3:04 am

Lux only lived 3 miles away from Jinx, which was kind of unfortunate for her because that gave her enough time to overthink her last interaction with her sister while she walked in silence.

She felt even more guilty than she had earlier. The smile Vi gave her before she closed the door after saying goodbye- but this was for the best. It would just cause Vi even more pain if she knew, so Jinx fought the urge to run back home to her sister.

She had another reason not to go back, though. Lux. Her last friend. The person she was going to meet right now. She had almost forgotten that’s what she was doing as she was so tangled up in her thoughts. Lux. Right.

The rest of her walk to Lux’s house was spent thinking about what the two of them would do together, thinking of things that she wanted to do for the very last time before dying. She definitely had to go get boba.

As she walked, she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She pulled the device out to check the notification, and it was a message from Lux.

Luxanna: Let me know when you start getting close and I’ll meet you. I don’t want my parents to see you on the cameras.

Jinx: cameras? damn. you got it. i’m about 5 mins away

Luxanna: I’ll start walking.

Jinx: see you in a sec blondie

Jinx smiled and put her phone in her pocket, excited to finally meet Lux. She just had to remind herself that she wasn’t allowed to get attached. That would just lead to even more hurt and she didn’t need that right now. She didn’t want her End Day to be like that. So, no getting attached to Lux.

Jinx was once again lost in thought, so when Lux turned the corner right in front of her and almost ran into her, she flinched and jumped back, caught off guard.

“Oh, I didn’t mean to scare you, sorry!” Lux exclaimed while taking a step back, her eyes wide. Jinx didn’t say anything and just stared at the girl, taking her in. She was wearing a white crop top and a light grey jacket with a black ruffled skirt. Underneath she was wearing white tights. She had simple, black tennis shoes on and her hands were covered with rings. In her hair, she wore a black headband. Her curtain bangs covered her eyes slightly as she looked at Jinx. She was a lot taller than Jinx- which she should’ve expected given her height was literally on her profile.

Jinx just stared.

And she also suddenly felt insecure about the dirty black tank top and grey sweats she was wearing.

Lux didn’t say anything so Jinx just continued to stare, letting her eyes follow her curves.

“I like your tattoo. And your hair,” Lux said eventually, breaking the awkward silence. Jinx blinked. “Uhhh, thanks. Outfit. I like it,” Jinx said awkwardly, gesturing towards Lux’s outfit with her hand then looking down. She shifted her weight uncomfortably and cleared her throat as she felt Lux’s eyes on her. “Thank you,” Lux replied while watching Jinx, unsure of what to do.

“Um, so, what do you want to do?” Lux wondered, averting her eyes from the blue-haired girl to look down at the ground. Jinx let out a soft sigh and stayed silent for a while. Lux could tell she had something to say, so she waited patiently for her.

“H-honestly, Blondie, I’m still kinda on edge from leaving my sister and I just wanna sit for a minute,” Jinx told her quietly, folding her arms and letting out a shaky sigh. Suddenly, Lux stepped forward and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“We could walk to the park down the road and sit down there? Maybe get to know each a little bit more, too?” Lux suggested softly. Jinx nodded and felt her heart in her throat as Lux rubbed her thumb over her bare shoulder slightly, looking down at her with worry, just like she had when they were on call.

Wordlessly, Lux removed her hand from Jinx’s shoulder and offered it to her for her to grab instead. Jinx’s eyes moved from the ground to Lux’s hand. Her hands looked soft and warm. She almost didn’t want to touch them, they seemed too perfect, but Jinx slowly reached her hand out and grabbed it.

“Are you ready to go?” Lux asked her, looking down at her. Finally, Jinx looked up to meet Lux’s eyes for the first time. Her eyes were soft- like her hands- and caring. Jinx didn’t like the way Lux looked at her. It was too soft and too caring, something Jinx didn’t deserve. This caused her to look back down and mumble a small ‘yeah’.

Lux smiled down at her and started walking, Jinx following as her grip on Lux’s hand tightened just the slightest. The blonde girl could see how tense her shoulders were and how nervous she was. Her eyes were still on the ground as she walked, the hand that wasn’t held in Lux’s was fidgeting with one of her braids which she held tightly in her hand.

“Is something wrong?” Lux asked, watching her tense up even more when she heard Lux speak. Jinx cleared her throat, “Um, no. Just thinking about my sister still.”

Lux nodded in understanding and stayed quiet, not sure if saying something would help her or not. The silence didn’t seem to help her though, she just continued to get more and more anxious.

“It’s okay,” was all Lux said to her, “You’re okay.”

That was all she needed to say to get Jinx to mostly calm down.

And it was also all she needed to say for her to immediately get attached just like she said she wouldn’t.

Chapter Text

The first thing Lux noticed about Jinx when they nearly ran into each other was that she seemed really nervous. She wasn’t sure if it was because of whatever had happened with her sister or if it was because meeting new people was scary for her, but she was nervous. Lux instinctively took on the comforter role just like she would with anyone else who seemed anxious.

Her words of affirmation seemed to help her a lot. She seemed less fidgety and a bit more willing to talk, but despite that, they walked in uncomfortable silence. Luckily it wasn’t that long of a walk to the park which was just a block away.

When they got to the park, Lux led them to a small, black bench that was near the sidewalk. Lux sat down first as Jinx awkwardly and slowly sat down next to her, their hands still intertwined.

“Are you feeling a bit better?” Lux wondered, turning her gaze to the road next to them, watching the few cars that drove by. Jinx hesitated before answering her question, shifting her position and looking in the same direction as Lux.

“Yeah. A bit,” Jinx said eventually, her grip on Lux’s hand loosening as if she were telling her it was okay to let go now. Lux removed her hand and placed it in her lap. Jinx did the same.

“So… you really don’t know what you want to do today?” Lux asked. Jinx pursed her lips as if she was thinking but then immediately shook her head, sighing quietly. “I had… a few ideas. But they were ruined. I already told you on the call,” the shorter girl explained softly. Lux let out a small hum as she was reminded of their conversations earlier, remembering Jinx telling her she had wanted to spend some time with her sister and friend.

“I don’t have anyone else I need to say goodbye to,” Jinx told Lux as she moved her eyes away from the road that Lux was still looking at and to the beautiful girl in front of her. She admired her hair which was blowing very softly in the breeze, absentmindedly grabbing her own hair and ran her fingers over the tight braids.

“What about your parents?” Lux questioned, turning back to look at Jinx.

“They died,” Jinx said bluntly, looking down when Lux suddenly looked over.

“Oh… oh, I’m so sorry. I’m sorry for bringing it up,” Lux apologized frantically, pausing for a moment, “…Why don’t you go visit them?”

Jinx considered this for a moment, based on her silence and facial expressions. But she shook her head and let go of her braid, grabbing her other hand instead so she could rub her hands together nervously.

“Accidents happened… they wouldn’t want me to visit,” Jinx almost whispered, looking away with sad eyes. Lux watched her as she became anxious again, being reminded of whatever had happened with her parents. Lux reached over to grab her hand again, stopping her from fidgeting.

“Hey, it’s okay. You don’t have to visit them,” Lux reassured her, “There are plenty of other things we could do today.”

“I-I don’t wanna talk about myself anymore, Blondie,” Jinx stuttered, squeezing her eyes shut and pulling her hand away from Lux so she could wrap her arms around herself.

“That’s okay. What do you want to talk about?” The taller girl asked her. Jinx shrugged slightly before opening her eyes back up and looking over at Lux. “Tell me about your horsie,” she said quietly.

Lux perked up at the idea and grabbed her phone from her pocket, pulling it out to find a picture to show Jinx.

“Her name is Starfire. She’s a Dutch Warmblood and she was imported from Germany for me. We do showjumping and a little bit of dressage for fun but I’m not very good at it. We only do it because she was a dressage horse before I bought her and it’s good to change up our routine every now and then. We’ve won around ten blue ribbons at local shows. I go out and ride her about four days a week. It’s kind of hard to find time with my classes and stuff but I always make time for her,” Lux explained as she found a picture of Starfire laying down in her stall and turned her phone towards Jinx so she could see. But honestly, right now Jinx didn’t care about the horse, the only thing she cared about was watching how Lux’s eyes lit up as she talked about the horse like it was the love of her life.

Lux continued to show Jinx pictures of Starfire as she talked about how she had gotten into riding. Jinx’s eyes darted between the phone and the other girl who looked very pretty right now.

“… and now I don’t exactly know what to do with her after that because I’m going to start going to school full time so I won’t really have the time to go out. If I can’t find someone to take her while I’m gone then I guess I’ll have to sell her which will be sad since I’ve had her for six years, so…” Lux paused, glancing over at Jinx who was looking at her, “I’m sorry, am I talking too much?”

Jinx shook her head slightly, “No, I just don’t know anything about horsies and I’m kinda confused. But she’s cute…”

“Thank you! I love her a lot. She’s my everything,” the Blonde told her with a smile. A small smile formed on Jinx’s face until her expression became serious, “I rode a horsie once. It threw me off.”

Lux let out a soft laugh at her words. Jinx stared at her as she did, the sound of her laughter making Jinx smile.

She was just so bright. Everything about her was bright and beautiful and angelic and perfect and Jinx couldn’t help but admire her as she laughed and then smiled at Jinx. The two girls just grinned at each other awkwardly.

3:36 am

“If you were the one dying today, what would you do?”

Lux bit her lower lip in thought, her blue eyes looking down at her hands.

“I’d… I’d probably tell my brother. And then we would decide whether or not we should tell my parents. After that… I don’t know. I would probably tell my friends goodbye and ride Starfire one last time. Then I’d stay home with my family,” the girl shrugged. Her blonde hair fell over her eyes as she thought of other things she’d rather do.

“That’s all?” Jinx asked.

“That’s all.”

There was a moment of silence.

“It’s not like you had any plans either,” Lux told her. Jinx shrugged her shoulders and looked away, rubbing her hands together, “I mean, I did have plans. They just didn’t work out.”

“I know. I’m sorry,” Lux apologized. Jinx just shrugged again. She started to look uncomfortable again so Lux tried to continue the conversation.

“Have you thought of anything you want to do?” Lux wondered, mirroring Jinx by looking away and fidgeting with her hands. Jinx stayed silent, so Lux assumed she was thinking.

As she thought, she grabbed one of her long braids and spun it around. Lux watched as she did so, finding the action quite endearing. She found herself smiling as she observed.

“Uhm… I wanna go get boba when the shop opens up…” Jinx paused as she went back to thinking, chewing on her lower lip.

Lux looked away as she waited for Jinx to think, but right as she did, Jinx gasped dramatically. She whipped her head back around to look at the other girl who was grinning at her.

“We should go swimming!” She exclaimed excitedly. Lux just replied with a small shrug, “I’d have to go home to get a bathing suit and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get back out again without being caught. Or we could buy something, but I don’t have my wallet with me.”

“We would just wear our bras and underwear?” Jinx told her as if it were completely obvious. Lux’s face turned red at the mention and she shook her head vigorously. “Not in front of people!” She yelped.

Jinx stared at her dumbly for a moment until her face lit up in understanding.

“No, silly, I’m saying let’s go swimming now,” the blue-haired girl explained, smiling. Lux’s eyes widened slightly. Jinx just laughed at her reaction.

“B-but all the pools are closed…” Lux stammered as Jinx continued to laugh. “Exactly! We should break in!”

“That’s illegal!” Lux shouted, “We could get arrested if we got caught!”

“Yeah. If we got caught, Luxy.”

“Don’t call me that!”

Jinx burst into laughter again, doubling over.

“You know, the only reason I kept talking to you was because you were easy to annoy,” Jinx informed her with a small wink. Lux groaned, “You’re getting more comfortable with me and I don’t like it.”

“Then you can go back home,” Jinx said bluntly with a shrug, “I’ll go swimming by myself.”

Lux stayed silent and contemplated this situation. Of course she wouldn’t just go back home and leave Jinx. She didn’t want to leave her on her End Day, and she also wanted Jinx to be able to do whatever she wanted today, but at the same time, Lux didn’t want to get into any more trouble than necessary.

When she met Jinx’s eyes, she saw the sad look she was giving her. That’s when Lux realized that Jinx thought she was considering leaving.

“I’m not going to leave! I’m just thinking,” the blonde reassured her. She saw Jinx relax slightly and then look away, grabbing one of her braids again and beginning to spin it around.

“We don’t have to. It’d… just be fun. One last time,” Jinx huffed, dropping the braid and pulling her knees to her chest, “If you really want to go home, it’s okay. I don’t really care anymore.”

She was obviously lying. She did in fact care, Lux could tell she was upset about it. Maybe a bit scared too. She curled in on herself on the bench, turning her back towards Lux while she mumbled something to herself.

“Jinx,” Lux placed a soft hand on her back, “I’m not going to go back. Let’s go swimming, okay?”

Jinx shifted slightly, turning her head to look at Lux once again.

“Promise?” She mumbled, barely loud enough for Lux to hear her. Lux smiled and nodded, “Promise. I won’t leave you.”

Jinx uncurled and turned towards Lux fully, her big grin and excited expression from earlier returning as if nothing had even happened.

“Okay! Let’s go!” Jinx shouted, grabbing Lux’s hand before jumping up from her spot on the bench, pulling Lux up with her. Lux laughed at her excitement but stood still when Jinx tried to pull her away so they could start walking. “Do you even know how we’ll get in?” Lux wondered. Jinx scoffed and waved her hand dismissively, “Uh, yeah. I do this all the time.” Jinx yanked Lux’s hand to get her to start walking. Eventually, she gave in and followed.

“I find it hard to believe that you do this all the time and you haven’t gotten arrested,” Lux stated, making Jinx laugh. “Who said I haven’t been arrested?”

Lux just froze up and inhaled sharply. Her reaction made Jinx cackle. “Joking! I haven’t been arrested before. It’s really not that hard to get in, Blondie. You hop the fence and jump in the pool. Easy peasy.”

“And you know where we’re going?”

“Yep! I go to the same pool every time. There aren’t any cameras or anything. The adrenaline rush is honestly underwhelming. There are some places that make it almost impossible to break into,” Jinx explained. The pair was silent for an uncomfortable amount of time as they walked down the side of the road.

“I’m trusting you not to get us caught,” Lux said.

“Hmm. I trust you, too.”

Chapter Text

Lux enjoyed observing Jinx. She was a very interesting person. She made funny facial expressions while she talked, she fidgeted a lot, her mood could change very quickly, she despised talking about herself (well, at least personal things which was understandable), and the last thing she observed about Jinx was that she really liked staring at Lux when she thought she wasn’t looking.

Jinx seemed like a very confident, loud person. Just a bit nervous at first. For some unknown reason. All hesitance and anxiety had vanished though, and now she was finally acting like the person she had talked to on the phone which made Lux happy.

As they walked, Jinx told Lux about the many illegal things she had done before, and even just the thought of it terrified her.

“Is everything you want to do today going to be illegal?” Lux asked, attempting to make it sound like a joke as she looked down at her shoes while she stepped. Jinx seemed to contemplate this for a moment before shaking her head and smiling softly. “Nah. I wouldn’t wanna scare you away,” she mutters jokingly, watching as Lux kicks a small pebble away with the toe of her shoe.

“You wouldn’t scare me away. I’m not leaving you today,” the blonde said firmly. She waited for Jinx to say something but she never did, so they continued to walk in uncomfortable silence.

Lux didn’t know how far they’d be walking. She hoped not long, because she didn’t know exactly what to say to Jinx, and the silence was overwhelming. She stole a glance at Jinx and wondered what she was thinking about. Maybe she was still thinking about her sister.

“Why’d you break up with your boyfriend?” Jinx asked suddenly, “Was he a dick?”.

So she wasn’t thinking about her sister.

Lux sighed as she thought about Ezreal, feeling guilty all over again. She honestly didn’t want to think about it anymore, the whole situation just upset her, and it made it worse knowing it was her fault. Lux sighed again, “No. No, he wasn’t a dick. He was a really nice guy. I just didn’t love him and really only saw him as a friend. I… told him that I just wanted to be friends and he was really nice about it. But now I just feel bad about it. I broke up with him on our one year anniversary and I just-“

Lux had to pause and take a deep breath before she could start crying, but she soon realized she already had a few tears sliding down her cheeks. She was quick to wipe them away and dip her head so Jinx couldn’t see.

“Sorry. It’s stupid,” she mumbled in embarrassment, sniffling, “I don’t even know why I’m crying.”

There was an awkward pause, and Lux sniffled again.

“It’s not stupid, Blondie,” Jinx told her, stopping in her tracks. Lux stopped as well, turning to look at the other girl who was looking at her with an unreadable expression. Lux tried to say something, but a sob came out instead. When she reached a hand up to cover her mouth and stifle her sobs, Jinx stepped forward and wrapped her lanky arms around her to pull her into a hug.

“I’m sorry,” Lux apologized softly, gently resting her chin on Jinx’s head. She let out a small snort of laughter at the fact the other girl was so short, and she pulled away from her with a slight smile, wiping the rest of her tears away.

“Are you laughing at me being short?” Jinx asked, an offended look on her face as she waited for Lux to answer her. “Of course not,” Lux laughed, making Jinx pout her lips and let out an exaggerated sigh.

“Whatever. Let’s keep walking,” she mumbled, starting to walk off. Lux quickly followed her, watching her as the pout fell from her lips and she smiled.

The uncomfortable silence returned. Lux hoped they were getting closer to their destination.

“I’m sorry about your boyfriend,” Jinx blurted out. Lux shook her head dismissively.

“It’s okay. I don’t really want to think about it anymore,” the blonde informed.

“Okay. Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize, it’s okay.”

After they stopped talking for a few seconds, Jinx giggled.

“The same thing kinda happened to me,” Jinx said. Lux looked over at her in curiosity, waiting for her to continue. Jinx smiled as she thought, looking away from Lux, “I dated my childhood best friend. The one I was planning on hanging out with today. When we were little, he had the biggest crush on me, and then as we got older I had the biggest crush on him. We started dating but then we kinda just decided we were better as friends. We only dated for a month, but it was still fun.”

“Did you feel bad after?” Lux wondered, turning her gaze away from the other girl and deciding to look down instead, watching her shoe crease as she stepped.

Jinx let out a small hum before replying with, “No. He also wanted to just stay friends, so it was an agreement, but Blondie, you really don’t have to feel bad about Ezreal. If he’s really as nice as you say he is then he’d want you to be happy rather than miserable and still in a relationship with him. It sounds like he’s still willing to be friends though, yeah?”

Lux pursed her lips as she took this into consideration, and then nodded slowly while muttering a soft ‘yeah’.

“Yeah. Now, forget about him for the rest of the day and we won’t talk about this again! Let’s go swimming!” Jinx exclaimed excitedly.

Lux now realized that they were right next to the parking lot of the pool, and she couldn’t back down now. All she could do was pray that they don’t get caught.

Be quiet! You’re going to get us caught!” Lux whispered loudly.

“There’s no one out here! And I didn’t even say anything!” Jinx shouted back, looking over her shoulder to glance at the other girl. Her eyebrows were furrowed and her arms were folded over her chest. Jinx scoffed at her expression, “You were the one who said you trust me not to get us caught.”

Lux didn’t say anything, she just continued to follow Jinx around the back of the building.

Jinx was right. There was no one around, and she did trust her, but she was still afraid of getting caught. She had decided not to say anything more though, not wanting to upset Jinx or maybe even be the reason they get caught for being too loud. Lux reached forward and grabbed onto Jinx’s shirt for support, feeling a bit embarrassed when she heard Jinx giggle.

“Are you scared?” She heard Jinx whisper to her. She couldn’t quite tell if she was about to tease her for her answer or not, so she stayed silent until Jinx looked over her shoulder to look at her. Lux looked away, chewing on her lower lip as she felt heat rise to her cheeks and embarrassment fill her chest.

“Yes.”

Suddenly, Jinx stopped, and Lux nearly ran into her, causing even more embarrassment.

The blue-haired girl stepped aside and gestured towards the fence in front of them. She could barely see anything though, the light from the street lights not reaching the back of the building.

“Just hop over the fence,” Jinx said.

“Uh, you go first,” Lux replied, smiling at her nervously. Jinx returned the smile and quickly grabbed onto the chain-link fence, pulling herself up until she was at the top and able to swing her legs over. She landed hard on her feet, grinning at Lux through the fence.

“Come on,” Jinx encouraged, “Just grab the fence. You can put your foot in one of these holes and climb up.”

“I can’t see anything!” Lux exclaimed, hesitantly grabbing onto the fence in front of her. She attempted to find somewhere to place her foot and pull herself up, but her foot slipped and she let out a small yelp of surprise.

Jinx didn’t say anything, so Lux assumed she was enjoying watching her struggle and the blonde sighed in frustration.

“Hey, don’t get frustrated. It’s alright. What can I do to help?” Jinx asked, her voice softening.

When Lux realized Jinx wasn’t going to make fun of her or laugh, she sighed again and lifted a hand to her head so she could brush her hair back.

“Nothing. I’m sorry. Just give me a minute,” Lux mumbled.

Jinx stepped back to watch as Lux climbed the fence surprisingly fast after a while of hesitation, but once she got to the top, she stopped and stared down at Jinx.

“… how do I get over?” She asked.

“You just gotta do it, Blondie. Swing your legs over. I’ll catch you if you fall,” Jinx answered. She could hear Lux whine as she hesitated again.

“I promise I’ll catch you. You just gotta do it,” the blue-haired girl repeated reassuringly, urging her on. It seemed to help because Lux climbed a bit higher before stepping up and putting a foot on the top rail. It took her a few seconds to finally push off and swing her other leg over, jumping off of the fence. She lost her balance once her feet hit the ground and Jinx grabbed her hurriedly before she fell.

Lux let out a sigh of relief as Jinx let go of her and she stood up straight, adjusting her skirt. Her hands were shaking slightly and her heart was pounding, but Jinx just grabbed both of her hands and pulled her a bit closer.

“We did it!! Let’s go swimming!!” Jinx said excitedly, jumping up and down. Lux laughed as Jinx dragged her to the edge of the pool and let go of her hands. Lux watched as she moved her hands to the hem of her tank top and pulled it off over her head.

Jinx suddenly looked up and noticed Lux was staring. Lux whipped her head away in embarrassment while Jinx’s cheeks flushed slightly and she smiled, striking a pose.

“Like what you see?” she questioned when Lux turned back around to look at her, but she immediately looked away again when her eyes landed on Jinx who was smiling. Lux was just glad it was dark so she couldn’t see too much. At least she had a bra on.

“No. I mean-! No, you aren’t- I didn’t mean it like that!! I meant that like, no, I wasn’t enjoying-“  Lux rambled until she got cut off.

“I was just kidding. I know what you meant,” Jinx told her with a small laugh, except she silently noted that she would’ve acted the exact same way if it were Lux who had taken off her shirt right in front of her. She smirked at the thought and looked up at Lux who had turned around, obviously embarrassed.

Jinx removed her pants and shoes, then threw her clothes off to the side while Lux awkwardly removed her jacket and headband. She started to take her rings off. Her back was still facing Jinx who was watching her intently.

“I just… take my clothes off?” Lux whispered. Jinx hummed in confirmation. But before she moved to take her crop off, she glanced over her shoulder to look at Jinx. “Can you please look away?”

She obeyed and spun around, rocking on her heels and waiting patiently for Lux to be done. She shivered slightly as a breeze blew by.

When the other girl was done stripping her clothes, she wrapped her arms around her midsection and turned around slowly, her gaze landing on Jinx who was shifting her weight and humming to herself quietly.

“You can turn around now,” she informed.

Jinx dramatically whirled back to face Lux and posed again, awkwardly staring at the blonde. The two of them exchanged an awkward glance at each other and they both looked away. Jinx stood up straight.

“I can believe I’m doing this,” Lux mumbled to herself.

“Come onnn, this is good for you. How can you have fun without breaking a few rules?” Jinx smiled.

“I assure you that there are many ways to have fun without breaking any rules,” Lux replied quietly.

“Okay, well that’s a you thing. Come on, let’s quit stalling and start swimming,” Jinx told her. She heard Lux breathe out a faint “okay”, so she stepped forward and grabbed her hand so she could lead her to the steps to get into the pool.

Jinx immediately stepped in, but when Lux went to follow, she let out a yelp.

“It’s cold!” She complained, stepping away from the pool, but Jinx continued to hold onto her hand.

“You just need to get used to it,” Jinx said, pulling on her hand encouragingly. Eventually, Lux gave in and followed her.

Chapter Text

Jinx was staring at Lux. She was so beautiful right now, her hair was blowing in the chilly breeze and she was gazing down at the water, looking at the reflection of the moon.

She was pouting her lip slightly in thought, clearly zoned out and paying no mind to Jinx. So Jinx just stared, and she hummed quietly as she observed her angelic features. Her small, button nose and her soft, plump lips.

But Jinx suddenly tensed up and looked away. This wasn’t what they were here to do. They were here to swim and have fun. Jinx felt slightly guilty for making Lux do this because she seemed nervous and jumpy. She didn’t want Lux to be upset with her and then leave and then Jinx would be all by herself again and she’d have to go home and see Vi again and she’d-

“We can leave if you want,” Jinx cut off her own thoughts and spoke.

Lux’s brows furrowed in confusion and she turned her gaze to Jinx and tilted her head slightly. “What do you mean?”

“Uhhh, I dunno, I just thought I kinda dragged you here. So we can leave if you want,” Jinx elaborated, looking down in slight embarrassment. She shivered slightly as a breeze blew past them.

Absentmindedly, Lux reached up and adjusted her bra while looking down at the water for a moment, and then she lifted her head again and she shook her head slightly.

“You didn’t drag me here. I wanted to come. Today is your day, remember? I’m here for you. Anything you want. Anything you need,” she reassured while grabbing Jinx’s hand and looking deep into her eyes.

Jinx felt her heart beat slightly quicker and she immediately just fell in love with this girl. Didn’t she say she wasn’t going to get attached though?? She wasn’t going to make any friends?

When Jinx didn’t reply, Lux smiled at her and slowly let go of her hand while looking away. “Whatever you want to do, I’ll come with you. I promised.”

Once again, Jinx didn’t reply and Lux stood there awkwardly, but when Jinx didn’t know how to respond, she splashed Lux instead and lunged for her, grabbing her shoulders and trying to dunk her under. Lux let out a yelp and giggled while she fought back, pushing Jinx off of her and shoving her into the water.

Jinx emerged while cackling loudly, flipping her bangs out of her eyes.

“You almost got my hair wet!” Lux whined, her hands reaching up to brush through her hair protectively.

“What’s the point of swimming if you’re not going to get your hair wet?” Jinx asked her before pouncing on her again, this time successfully dunking her underwater.

Lux jumped up with a gasp and wrapped her arms around her midsection. “It’s freezing!” She complained, shivering.

Jinx grabbed her stomach as she laughed, and Lux used that as an opportunity to push her under again, snorting with laughter as she jumped away from Jinx before she could be pushed underwater again too. Instead, Jinx dived toward her and Lux shrieked loudly, causing Jinx to laugh again as she grabbed Lux and pulled her into a hug.

The action was unexpected, but Lux accepted it and hugged her back, wrapping her arms around Jinx’s bare back (save for her bra) which kind of felt awkward.

Lux felt Jinx hum against her as she leaned in a bit more. Then she pulled away suddenly.

“What was that for?” Lux asked her watching as Jinx turned around and walked towards the deeper end of the pool.

“For fun,” Jinx shrugged, dipping her hand in the water and splashing it around. She abruptly jumped into the water and swam over to Lux, grabbing her leg while underwater. Lux shrieked and tried to kick her away while laughing. When she came back up, she stepped closer to Lux.

“Can I ride your horsie?” She asked with a smile.

“Now?” Lux wondered. It was a stupid question. She wanted to slap herself in the face.

“Now,” Jinx answered.

“Now? Like you want to leave?”

The other girl nodded her head, her smile growing. Her smile was infectious, and Lux couldn’t help but smile back. Before Lux could say anything else, Jinx grabbed her hand and led her out of the pool.

“But we just got here!” Lux exclaimed, following Jinx.

Jinx hummed in acknowledgment. “Were you having fun?”

“It’s not about me, I-“

“Okay, then let’s go to the horsie!!” Jinx laughed, walking over to a lounge chair and plopping herself down with a relaxed sigh. Lux decided to sit in the chair next to her, watching Jinx as she reached over and grabbed her phone off the ground.

While Jinx was occupied, Lux glanced at her.

Jinx was going to die today.

It was a weird thought. Lux didn’t like it, so she decided to grab her phone too and start looking through her socials.

She let out a loud groan suddenly and grabbed one of her braids, swinging it around. “My hair is gonna be wet for the rest of the day.“

Then she smirked.

“Y’know what would dry my hair out? Galloping on your horse,” she said, letting go of her braid and looking over at Lux.

“You won’t gallop,” Lux replied, rolling her eyes with a smile. “I need to figure out how to get to the stables. I can’t take my car because then I’ll have to go home. I don’t think my parents will question me leaving too much, but if I left and then came back for my car?”

Jinx hummed in thought, crossing her legs. She doubted that Jinx had a car. She said her sister was going on a trip so she couldn’t use her car. Her friend was going to work so they couldn’t use his car.

“Why not just take the bus?” Jinx suggested.

“That would probably work,” Lux shrugged.

“I don’t fucking know how buses work,” Jinx added. “Uber?”

Lux shook her head and turned her phone back on. “No, I’ve got it.”

Jinx just smiled and tilted her head before grabbing her own phone once again.

They sat in silence for about 10 minutes and they were both fully dry now (besides their hair) so Jinx had started getting her clothes back on.

Lux decided to also get dressed after she was finished on her phone. Jinx was bouncing excited in anticipation as she waited for Lux to be ready.

“Okay,” Lux sighed, standing up straight. “Now we can go see the horse.”

Jinx laughed and grabbed Lux’s hand, dragging her over to the fence where she quickly climbed up and jumped over, just as she had done when they had arrived here. Lux tried to imitate her, going a bit quicker than the first time. Jinx still grabbed her when she landed, making sure she was steady and didn’t fall over. Then, Jinx started running away from the pool. Lux trailed behind her.

“Do you even know where the bus stop is?!” Lux shouted out to her.

“No!!”

Chapter Text

4:56 am

“It’s about a 10 minute drive. It will probably take 20 minutes with the stops.”

Bleh , really?” Jinx groaned.

“That’s not too bad for a bus ride, actually,” Lux informed.

Jinx just groaned again and leaned her head against the cold window. She heard Lux let out a sigh and shift in the seat next to her. The two of them said nothing for a while. Jinx felt her eyelids start to get heavy, but before they could close, she felt Lux slowly lean her weight onto her. She turned her gaze over to the blonde who seemed to be asleep, her head resting on Jinx’s shoulder. She smiled fondly at Lux, and suddenly the urge to kiss her head was strong, but that was weird, that was so fucking weird-

Jinx decided to gently rest her own head on top of Lux. Someone had to stay awake and make sure they got off at their stop. But Jinx didn’t even know where their fucking stop was.

When Lux woke up, she realized in horror that she had fallen asleep and was now leaning against Jinx. But she also realized that Jinx was asleep too, and Jinx was also leaning on her. And when she looked out the window, she also realized that they were coming up to their stop soon.

Lux slowly reached an arm up and placed it on Jinx’s shoulder, gently shaking her awake. She apparently wasn’t a very deep sleeper because she woke up immediately, her deep blue eyes meeting Luz’s bright blue ones.

“Ughh, did I fall asleep?” Jinx muttered, sitting up. Lux smiled at her and nodded.

“It’s okay, we woke up just in time. The bus stop should be up here somewhere,” Lux explained, and she reached over across Jinx to pull on the cord above the window and request to stop.

“Sweet,” Jinx hummed while grabbing her phone from her pocket. And then she cursed under her breath. Lux looked over in concern, her brows furrowed. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothin’… it’s- it’s just my sister,” she said quietly, staring at the screen.

“Oh,” Lux said lamely.

Vi: Hey Pow you aren’t home. Are you okay? Cait and I are getting ready to leave, I came to your room to check up on you but I guess you’re still out with that girl. It’s pretty late to be out. Let me know if everything’s okay

The text was from 6 minutes ago and she had one missed call from Vi.

She should talk to her sister one last time.

Her finger hovered over the call button, her teeth chewing on her bottom lip. She pressed the button and held her phone up to her ear, listening to it ring and ring until Vi finally picked up. Lux glanced over, wondering if she should leave and give her some privacy, but Jinx just shrugged dismissively.

“Hey, Vi,” Jinx said warily.

“Hey, Pow-Pow. Where ya at?” Her sister wondered. She sounded tired. She now realized that Vi hadn’t gotten much sleep that night. She always fell asleep on road trips though, she’d be okay.

“I’m still with the girl. We’re just exploring the city,” Jinx explained, looking down at her chipped nail polish.

Vi hummed through the phone thoughtfully. “How is she? You guys up to trouble?”

“Course not. I would never get my girl in trouble,” Jinx replied.

“Yeah, you would.”

“Yeah, I would,” Jinx agreed, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. “She’s fun. She’s cute. I like her.”

Jinx turned her gaze to Lux for a moment, their eyes locking. She sent Lux a wink and the other girl smiled and looked away, a slight blush tinting her cheeks. Jinx felt the bus start to come to a stop.

“You should bring her over when we get back. Cait would love to meet her,” Vi suggested. The smile disappeared from Jinx’s face and she went back to looking at her nails. “Yeah, for sure,” she mumbled.

There was a silence between them for a moment. Lux stood up and adjusted her skirt before looking down at Jinx expectantly.

“Is everything okay? You sound sad,” Vi asked as she stood up from her spot, following Lux as she started to make her way off the bus.

“Yeah. It’s nothing,” Jinx dismissed. “I’m just gonna miss you.”

“Awwww, Pow. It’s okay, we’ll only be gone for three days. I’ll be back before you know it,” Vi cooed.

Jinx sniffed. She stepped off the bus behind Lux and a breeze of cold air whipped her in the face. Lux turned to look over at the blue-haired girl and her expression changed to one full of concern when she saw Jinx clearly not trying to cry.

“I know. I’m fine,” she reassured.

“I know you are. I’m gonna let you go now. Cait just finished making breakfast,” Vi said.

“Okay, Vi. I love you.”

“I love you so much, Jinx.”

Vi hung up the call, and Jinx turned her back to Lux just before she let out a sob. She felt Lux place a warm hand on her back as she stepped closer to her.

“Is everything okay?” She asked softly.

And no, it wasn’t okay. Jinx wasn’t going to see her sister ever again but her sister didn’t know that, and she was expecting to come home and see Jinx again but she wouldn’t be there. Vi wanted her to bring Lux over so Caitlyn could meet her but she wouldn’t be here to introduce her.

“Yeah, it’s fine, Blondie. Can you do me a favor?” She questioned as she wiped her tears away and spun around to face Lux. She nodded willingly. Jinx held out her phone, gesturing for Lux to take it.

“Take my phone. Please. And don’t give it back. After I die, please text my sister. Tell her what happened but tell her that I was with you and I was happy,” she begged, placing the phone in Lux’s hand. “Sorry to be a bummer all of the sudden.”

“Jinx, you aren’t being a bummer. It’s okay for you to be sad, or scared, or whatever you’re feeling. I’m here for you,” She promised. She stuffed Jinx’s phone into a pocket in her skirt (what the hell) and then reached forward to wrap her in a hug. The hug was warm and comforting, and Jinx couldn’t help but melt into it. Lux was too sweet.

“Horses can tell when you feel sad. I’m sure Starfire can help. Riding takes your mind off of everything. Ready to go for a ride?” Lux offered, rubbing her back softly. She felt Jinx nod against her and then pull away from the embrace.

“To the horsie we go,” Jinx smiled, wiping the last of her tears away with a small smile.

“To the horsie we go,” Lux repeated, taking Jinx’s hand.

Notes:

I recently discovered that Starfire is actually a boy not a girl so oops but I don’t care let’s all just pretend that she’s been a mare this whole time 💪

Chapter Text

“Sometimes I feel kind of bad because my parents imported this fancy horse from Germany for me and I don’t even compete with her anymore,” Lux sighed. “All we did was go to local shows. I enjoyed it a lot though, we won quite a bit. My mother always wanted me to become a professional rider, I’m not sure why. I know she’s disappointed, but I think I’d rather just enjoy my horse than stress myself out with showing. Sorry for rambling.”

“Nah, Luxy, I like listening to you talk about your horsie,” Jinx murmured.

“I told you not to call me that,” Lux said sternly.

Jinx scoffed playfully and elbowed Lux with a grin. Lux looked over at her, a smile growing on her face. She lifted a hand to rub at her nose before continuing.

“It’s just… I’m planning on going to school full-time soon, so I don’t know what I’m going to do with Starfire. I’ve thought about selling her to a little girl who’s wanting to show because I think she’d be just the perfect horse to start showing on, but my parents would go crazy. You don’t know how many lectures they’ve given me for just not going to the stables five days a week. I don’t know what they want me to do. They want me to go to school full time and they want me to show my horse and they want me to get an internship and they want me t o marry . They want me to do all this shit, I don’t know what they expect!” Lux exclaimed angrily, burying her face in her hands. “Nothing is ever good enough for them.”

Jinx glanced over at the blonde with a frown.

“My parents don’t even care to get to know me anymore. They don’t care to know what I want to do with my life or who I want to be. They don’t know that I broke up with my boyfriend, they don’t know that I’m bisexual. There are so many things they don’t know about me but they just don’t care . But I guess it’s fine because they’d freak if they found out half of my secrets. They are extremely homophobic. And they loved Ezreal. They started planning the stupid wedding and everything. I’m 18 !”

They walked in silence for a moment.

“Sorry,” Lux mumbled.

“Hey, don’t apologize, Blondie. It’s good to get it out, ya know? And don’t worry, I’m taking your secrets to the grave. Literally,” Jinx joked.

Lux sighed with a small smile. “Thank you, Jinx.”

Before Jinx could even respond, Lux stopped in her tracks. Jinx looked up and realized that they were at the entrance of the stables. Lux pulled a key ring with a bunch of keys out of her weird skirt pocket and stepped up to the big, fancy gates that blocked their path. A flimsy lock kept the gates latched, and Jinx watched as the other girl fumbled with the lock, having a hard time seeing it in the dark.

She let out a grunt once she got it unlocked. Pushing the gate open, she gestured for Jinx to walk through. Jinx smirked at her and stepped forward onto the property. It was dark and hard to see, but she could make out the huge, fancy barn. It just screamed rich.

Lux stepped through and closed the gates, leaving them unlocked. She let out a sigh before the two of them continued forward down the small paved pathway that led to the stables.

“Wow,” was all Jinx said.

“The property is beautiful. I wish you could see it in the daylight,” Lux told her.

“I guess you’ll have to bring me back,” Jinx shrugged jokingly.

“I guess so,” Lux responded with a smile.

The two of them continued down the path in silence. As they came closer, Jinx looked around. Despite the darkness, she was able to make out a fence lining a big grass pasture. There were two horses by the fence, one was peacefully grazing and the other had its head up, looking around.

Jinx grinned as her eyes landed on the animals. They soon came up to the big barn, and Lux reached into her pocket to grab her keys again. She found the right key, slipped it into the lock, and quickly unlocked it. She put the keys away and pulled the big barn doors open.

They were greeted with a dark barn and a nicker from one of the horses. Lux stepped inside and flipped on a light switch that lit up the whole stables.

Now, they were greeted with a bunch of confused horse faces. Jinx felt like she was going to burst with excitement.

“HORSIES!” She jumped up and hurried over to the closest stall. A big, tall chestnut with a white snip had his head out, looking at her with curious ears. Jinx booped his nose softly, and then she reached up and pet his forehead, ruffling his forelock. She stood up on her tippy toes and stroked his ears. He stood there patiently as she caressed his face and squeezed his soft muzzle.

“Blondie, why didn’t I meet you earlier?” Jinx asked aloud as the horse lowered his head and started itching his face on her shoulder.

Lux laughed as she watched Jinx and the horse. She never would’ve known Jinx liked horses, honestly.

“He likes meeee,” she whined as the gelding nudged her with his nose for more pets.

Lux smiled and watched her for a few more seconds before turning around and heading down the aisle of many stalls to find her mare. The horse was already sticking her head out, ears perked and soft snorts escaping her.

“Aww, Star,” she cooed, stepping up to her horse. The mare immediately leaned into her touch once Lux started petting her.

Jinx trailed up behind Lux and hovered over her shoulder. Lux smiled and moved over so Jinx could see the horse.

“This is my horse,” she said proudly. Jinx reached a hand out so she could sniff it but instead, she just pushed her nose into her hand with a snort.

The blue-haired girl bent down and softly pet her muzzle, admiring her whiskers and her soft lip.

Lux watched her gently stroke her soft coat, and the way the mare just looked down at her with attentive eyes and perked ears. It was kind of endearing.

“Want to get her out for me?” Lux asked. Jinx whipped her head around and nodded vigorously. Lux smiled and grabbed her blue halter that was hanging next to her stall and handed it to Jinx. She unlatched the stall door for her and pulled it open, letting Jinx inside.

“She’s so tall,” the short girl marveled. “How does this collar work?”

Lux let out a snort of laughter and moved forward to help her.

“It’s called a halter. Undo this buckle here,” the blonde pointed to the buckle. “This band goes around her nose. And then the strap with the buckle goes behind her ears and you do the buckle back up. Oh, and put the lead rope over her neck so she doesn’t step on it.”

Jinx did as she was told and swung the rope over her neck. Starfire lowered her head for her as she started to pull the halter over her nose. She stood perfectly still as Jinx finished putting the halter on and then looked up at Lux proudly.

“Okay, now bring her out and follow me. Stand on her left side,” Lux informed. Jinx slowly grabbed the lead rope from her neck and held it awkwardly in her hands before stepping out of the stall, amazed when the horse started following her.

“You’re doing wonderfully. I think she likes you.”

Notes:

Idk if this seems OOC for Jinx but I can imagine her really liking horses. It’s kinda cute idk. Half assed this chapter but I hope you enjoyed

Chapter 12: Not an update

Chapter Text

Hey guys, this isn’t a story update. Ive fallen out of my Lightcannon obsession unfortunately but I know a lot of people wanted this fic to be finished. I have the rest planned out, so I was wondering if there was anyone who still wants me to finish it. I can either do one last chapter with a summary of what happened or half assed chapters with like 300 words and no dialogue.

Chapter Text

Lux helped Jinx get Starfire into the crossties and then brought out the brushes. She stopped to explain every single one and it’s use before starting the grooming. Jinx seemed very interested which made Lux happy.

And once they were both done brushing Starfire

they moved onto the bridle. Lux told Jinx how the bit worked and how to put the bridle on. Starfire stood still, her ears perked as she happily chomped the bit into her mouth when Jinx was putting the bridle on her.

“I can’t believe I get to ride your horse,” Jinx said, petting Starfire’s neck and admiring her muscles.

“She’s a very good girl. You’ll love her. Now, hold her for me while I get helmets?” Lux offered, holding the reins out towards her. Jinx nodded eagerly and took the reins from Lux, looking at the mare in amazement.

When Lux returned, she handed Jinx a black riding helmet and started to put her own on, strapping it beneath her chin. Jinx’s felt a little loose around her head and Lux seemed to notice, so she stepped behind Jinx and tightened it for her. One of Lux’s hands absentmindedly rested on Jinx’s shoulder and she shivered at the warmth of her hand.

“There. Want to lead her out for me?” The blonde asked Jinx. Once again, the short girl nodded excitedly. Lux smiled and started walking out of the crossties, Jinx soon following with Starfire behind her.

Lux led her out to the arena with her phone flashlight on. The sun was just barely starting to come up and the sky was getting a bit brighter, but not enough to give them light. Once they got to the arena, Lux took the reins from Jinx, swung them over Starfire’s head, and then dragged a mounting block over. She climbed up and grabbed the reins before hopping up and throwing herself over her back. She then swung her right leg over and sat up, adjusting her seat. “Im going to warm her up. She’s a little spicy,” she giggled before walking off with her horse.

Jinx didn’t say anything, she just watched. She didn’t know anything about horse back riding, but she could tell that Lux was probably a pretty good rider. She sat tall… well, that was all Jinx could see. She stood there patiently and watched. When Lux came back around the arena and passed Jinx, she was able to see Lux’s seat a bit better. Jinx was just absolutely stunned. She watched Lux flex her thighs as they walked, her tights showing them off well. Then she transitioned to a trot. The grey mare’s strides were long and her step was big. Lux posted with ease without a saddle. After two laps of trotting, she transitioned to a canter. Starfire did a little crow hop as she jumped into, and Lux just laughed, staying on for the ride. Jinx just thought she was absolutely beautiful, riding this huge horse with no saddle in just tights and a skirt. Her hips moved perfectly with Starfire’s stride and her- no. That was weird. Don’t think about Lux that way. She’s just riding a horse.

Starfire did a few more little crow hops at the canter and then she finally calmed down and Lux came to a halt right next to Jinx.

“Your turn?” She asked, swinging her leg over the horse and dismounting.

“Uhh, yeah,” Jinx mumbles, walking forward. Lux held the reins while Jinx climbed up.

“She’s big. Just hop up. Flop yourself over her back and then you can swing your leg over,” she explained. Jinx did a half-assed jump but didn’t bother to actually jump onto the horse. Lux giggled as she watched and looked at her encouragingly.

Jinx tried again and this time she threw herself up onto Starfire’s back and pushed herself up. She let out a grunt and then grabbed the reins. Lux looked up at her with an adorable giggle. “Okay. I’m gonna coach you,” she says, walking to the middle of the arena. Starfire instinctively follows Lux and the blue haired girl lets out a small shriek as the horse moves, holding onto the reins for dear life.

Lux turns around and sees that her horse is following her and she giggles once again. “Don’t let her follow me!! Steer her away!” She laughs.

“I don’t know how!!” Jinx panics.

Lux lets out another chuckle and grabs the reins softly to stop her horse. “Leg pressure. If you want her to turn left, give her some leg pressure on the right to move her body over. Walk forward and softly squeeze with your outside leg. Don’t kick, just squeeze,” she instructs. Jinx clucks loudly and Starfire starts to walk off again. She hesitantly leans forward and starts to give Starfire some pressure from her right heel, and “magically”, Starfire turns. Jinx gasps and looks down at Lux.

“She moved!!”

Lux Just laughs again and doubles over. “Okay, move her over to the fence. Keep your leg stretched low, keep your elbows to your sides. You’re actually holding the reins perfectly. You can shorten them a bit though so you have some contact,” she says.

Jinx nods like she’s done this a million times and struggles to shorten the reins. Once she has them an inch shorter, she gives Starfire some inside leg to move her out. Jinx just has her mouth open, absolutely amazed.

After she walks around the arena for a few laps, still amazed at how cool her horse is, Lux steps forward and folds her arms in concentration. “Okay, I’ll have you ask her to trot. Just sit back and stay balanced. It’s bouncy. Try not to hold onto her mouth to stay balanced, just try and balance your seat. Even your weight on both sides, okay? Then cluck to her again and you can give her some leg on both sides to encourage her forward.”

Jinx nods again and sits herself back before clucking to Starfire and asking her to trot. She easily steps into it, and Jinx immediately bounces forward.

“It’s bouncy!” Jinx exclaims, struggling to stay on. Lux laughs and instead of helping, she just watches as Jinx slowly slips off one side. She pulls back on the reins and whispers “stop, stop, stop, stop, stop” to the mare. Once the horse has stopped, Jinx adjusts her seat so she’s even again. She asks for the trot again, and this time she sits it a bit better. She’s still bouncing, but she doesn’t look like she’s gonna fall off. Jinx starts to laugh as the mare just trots around, her ears perked and head high like she’s having the time of her life. Lux continues to laugh, watching instead of coaching.

After a moment of trotting, Starfire starts to speed up until she steps into a canter. Jinx bounces on her back with each stride, but she doesn’t seem to lose her balance. “I’m galloping!” She yelps to Lux, flopping around on her horse’s back.

When Jinx has gone around the arena twice at a canter, Lux giggles. “Okay, okay, tell her to stop now,” she says. Jinx pulls back on the reins and Starfire stops obediently.

“You told me I wouldn’t gallop and I did!” She exclaims. Lux walks over to them and shakes her head. “That was not a gallop. But good job,” she giggles, grabbing the reins.

“How was that not a gallop? I was totally galloping!!”

“That was a canter,” Lux tells her, leading Starfire over to the mounting block.

Jinx just shakes her head, still convinced she was galloping.

The blonde brings her horse to the mounting block and then steps up, taking the reins from Jinx. “Scoot back,” she says.

“What are you doing?” Jinx asked curiously, but she scoots herself back into the horse’s croup. Lux hops up onto her in front of Jinx and gathers the reins.

“Wanna go on a trail ride?” Lux asks.

“What?!? Yes!!

Chapter 14: Summary

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Lux takes Jinx out on the trail with Starfire, Jinx sitting directly behind Lux with her arms wrapped around Lux’s midsection. The sun is just starting to come up and the two of them admire the sunset and the beautiful trail ahead of them. After an hour, they return back and put Starfire away. They both sit in her stall together and plan out what to do next. People are starting to show up at the barn so they decide to leave. They catch a bus back to the city and they decide to go to a cafe for breakfast. They have a cute little breakfast date together and just talk about life and death. They spend the rest of the day running around the city and going to places they’ve never been to before, trying new ice cream places, visiting new museums, going to dress boutiques and trying on big fancy dresses together. At 6 pm, they decide to go to this really fancy dinner place. Jinx figures that since she’s dying soon, she better waste all her money now. While they’re waiting for their food, a car right in front of the restaurant hits another car and sends it flying into the building. Jinx and Lux are okay, but the car catches on fire and something in the kitchen explodes. They both run out of the building but Lux is fighting Jinx, wanting to help people get out. She runs back in. Lux starts helping people out of the building safely. She goes back one more time but Jinx doesn’t think it’s safe anymore. Lux is already gone before Jinx can tell her this, so she runs in after her. There’s another explosion inside.

The fire department, the police, and ambulances show up. Many people saw Jinx and Lux go in but they never saw them come back out, so they go inside looking for the two of them. Lux is in pretty bad condition and she rides to the hospital in the ambulance. She’s worried about Jinx, but she kind of has a feeling that she didn’t make it. She gets confirmation of that at the hospital. She feels guilty, knowing Jinx wouldn’t have died in the fire if Lux hadn’t ran back in. After she’s treated, she uses her time to type out a paragraph to Vi about their day together and what happened with Jinx. Right before she sends the text, her own phone starts to ring. A nurse hands her the phone, and when she answers, she hears: “Hello. I’m calling from Death-Cast. This is Thomas calling to speak with Lux.”

Notes:

PLOT TWISTTTT, anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed this fic even though I wasn’t able to fully finish it. I’m so thankful for all the support I had 💛💛
