Chapter Text

Severus hummed to himself as he felt himself being dragged by a tiny blond child.

Draco Malfoy had been a stubborn child and a very difficult one to raise.

Now Severus himself wasn’t the kid’s biological father but he was deemed the godfather should anything happen to his real parents.

The Malfoys were seen as one of the most influential and wealthy families in the wizarding world, ranked right up there with the Blacks. They consisted of nothing but strong purebloods. There was nothing that could stop them.

Until one day Lucius Malfoy and his beloved wife Narcissa disappeared.

No one knows what happened to them and there had been a worldwide investigation searching for the two parents.

However after much time and no leads were found, and as such the two purebloods were officially declared dead.

And as a result, Severus became the guardian of their only son, Draco.

Severus and Lucius had been friends during their years at Hogwarts.

Lucius had bestowed a certain trust in Severus compared to other Slytherins. Severus couldn’t understand why, as far as he knew he wasn’t even worthy of Lucius’s attention. Lucius was a rich, powerful pureblood who was not afraid of pledging his loyalty to Voldemort while Snape was a scrawny child who was broke and had an abusive childhood.

They had formed a strange friendship that extended beyond adulthood.

Severus had even attended the man’s wedding and was there when his son was born.

“Severus!”  Lucius exclaimed, grinning as the dark haired man excused himself into Malfoy Manor.

“Lucius,” Severus acknowledged with a grunt, “what was so urgent that you wanted me over right away?”

Lucius cackled.

“Always getting to business, huh.”

“You interrupted me on a busy day, Malfoy.”

Lucius gasped dramatically. “Malfoy, eh? You wound me Severus, I thought we were on a first name basis?”

Severus scoffed but smiled nonetheless. “Alright, alright. I apologize then, Lucius.”

Lucius chuckled before gesturing to the coach.

Sev nodded and sat on the couch. “What’s going on?”

Lucius sighed before turning serious. “I’m sure you’re aware but Narcissa went into labour a week ago.”

Sev blinked and sported a tiny smile. “Is that all? Yes of course I knew. Send her my regards.”

Lucius nodded. “Of course. But that’s not why I asked you not come over.”

“I figured. What’s going on?”

“I want you to be Draco’s godfather.”

Severus snapped his head up in surprise.

“What?”

Lucius rolled his eyes. “You heard me.”

Severus sent him a deadpan expression. “You’re joking.”

“I’m not.”

The potions master scoffed. “Surely you jest, why me of all wizards? You would rather a filthy half-blood take care of your child than…I don’t know some pure blood relative?”

“You’re the only one I trust, Severus.” Lucius said placing a hand on Snape’s shoulder.

“Lucius…”

“Please accept. I’m not asking you as a friend Severus, but as a father.” Lucius murmured, “if something ever happens to me and Narcissa, I want you to take care of him.”

Severus looked down.

It’s not that he didn’t want to. But he didn’t have the idea of what a good father would be. Tobias Snape wasn’t exactly a caring man.

Lucius noted his expression. “You are not your father. You will be better.”

Severus sighed. “How can you be so sure?”

“You are always striving to be better than the person you were yesterday.”

***

It had been 11 years since then.

Looking back at that memory, it seemed as though Lucius had known he was going to disappear this entire time.

Of course at that point, Severus had accepted. Lucius looked desperate and Severus figured it would be unlikely that he would end up being Draco’s guardian anyway. What with how powerful the Malfoys were.

“-Papa!”

Sev blinked and realized they had stopped in front of Madam Malkin's in Diagon Alley.

Draco sneered. “You’ve been spacing out for a minute. I almost thought about leaving your sorry arse here!”

Severus rolled his eyes, used to Draco’s bratty attitude. “Watch your mouth, child.”

“Whatever. Look if you’re going to keep spacing out, can we buy my bloody robes already? I don’t want to waste any more time.”

Severus sighed. Already 11 years old and Draco was still as impatient as ever.

“Quit your whining and get inside the shop then.”

Draco grinned triumphantly and practically dashed inside the shop, his guardian following him slowly.

Severus didn’t expect any of this.

He didn’t expect to lose his friend in October of 1981.

He didn’t expect that he had to raise a baby that he never wanted.

He didn’t expect to see James Potter on that faithful day in Diagon Alley.

But as faith would have it, Severus Snape was in for a long adventure.
