Notes:

Heavily inspired by many telenovelas, you’re in for drama.

Chapter 1: First Impressions

Chapter Text

In the world owned by alphas and ruled by omegas, there was no place where a beta could accomplish much. Being a beta became so rare, that spotting one was considered bad luck on some continents.

Hinata had the misfortune of being born as a beta, and from the day of his birth was sentenced to a life filled with obstacles. His father as an alpha, although extremely loving, struggled to relate to him. Most of his life Hinata spent shunned from society, whether it be school, social clubs or internships, he was always lonely.

However, that never bothered him.

He learned quickly that people's prejudice rarely had anything to do with him as a person, and so he chose to not take their hostility to heart. Instead, he struggled on, always with a smile on his face, no matter the circumstance.

“Come on, you have to sleep, otherwise you won’t make it to your interview tomorrow”, Hinata’s father urged him.

“I will, I will. I’m too excited to sleep anyways”, Hinata waved him off, pouring himself yet another cup of sleep
inducing herbal tea. The truth was, he exaggerated his excitement, and downplayed how stressed the circumstances made him. He desperately needed the job to be able to finally provide for his family in some sort of way, after his father gave up on his retirement to provide Hinata with more than adequate education. It was time to pay back, but despite his above average qualifications he’s been rejected from every position he applied to so far.

Tomorrow, his ever so important interview was for a position of a simple secretary for a marketing director in a company that specialised in designing sportswear. No matter how trivial the role, at this point in time Hinata hoped that he would get the position. He couldn’t imagine how much another rejection would crush him.

That night Hinata didn’t manage to get even a single
minute of sleep in. No amount of silly herbal teas his dad recommended helped. Neither did his inner motivational monologues. No matter what he did, he couldn’t help but feel sick with anxiety at the thought of his interview.

“You’re up already?”, his father asked, yawning , as he entered the kitchen with his eyes still half closed.

“I have to be, I can either take the bus at 5am and be two hours early. Or take the one at 7:30 and be 10 minutes late”, Hinata explained patiently. He didn’t feel hungry, yet he absentmindedly prepared a sandwich.

“You’re right son, better to be early. Being fashionably late doesn’t apply to interviews.”

They ate breakfast in comfortable silence. Hinata knew his father will soon retreat to his garage, where he will spend his entire day fixing anything the neighbours bring in, for payments so minuscule it was almost laughable.

He really needed to get this job.

“Hinata, I have a good feeling. You will get the job for sure. And maybe even meet the love of your life”, his father broke the silence. He smiled brightly, but his words only made Hinata grimace.

“Dad, you know that’s not possible for me, stop mentioning it. No one would choose a beta, omegas naturally want an alpha. And alphas have no reason to look my way, when there’s so many omegas around. The chances of meeting another beta are close to none. I’m going to get a job, so that you don’t have to work so hard everyday anymore. I’m not trying to find love out there”, he folded his arms, suddenly losing his appetite.

“Don’t sulk, no one ever said you can’t find both”, his dad was not discouraged and playfully punched his arm. Hinata giggled at that, feeling some of the tension leave his body. No matter what could happen, his dad would never abandon him.

Hinata researched the company in detail, but he never thought to look at pictures of their building. Located in the heart of the city, it towered over all the high fashion cafes and stores and even other offices of well known brands. Admittedly, Hinata has never seen a building quite so large before, and struggled to imagine the view from the top. He wondered if he could see his house from there.

Confidently he approached the front door, although he arrived early, he assumed the security would let him in.

He assumed wrong.

“What kind of business a beta could have with Aoba Johsai?”, the security guard chuckled. Hinata could tell that his astonishment was not malicious, but rather genuine.

“An interview”, he announced proudly.

“We outsource our janitorial team”, the security guard wondered out loud.

“No, no. It’s to be Oikawa Tooru’s secretary”, Hinata smiled brightly, hoping that it would help his case.

“I see”, the security guard nodded, seemingly lost in thought, as he pressed the button that slammed the door shut in front of Hinata’s face.

“Come back when we’re open!”, he instructed Hinata.

He didn’t believe me.

As he turned around, deciding on which cafe he will go to spend the next two hours in, he walked right into someone. Although as a beta he struggled to pick on others scents, the strong stench of an omega in heat soaked through the clothes of the person he bumped into. As Hinata moved away, he clearly saw that it was an alpha.

An alpha that just exited the Aoba Josai building.

He could ask him if he can be allowed to wait inside!

The man looked like he was important. Towering over Hinata, just like the company building towered over tiny restaurants, he certainly appeared to hold some sort of authority. His clothes looked more expensive than anything Hinata ever owned. The man’s chestnut hair, although not styled after a night spent in the office, appeared soft and luxurious. On top of that, he was the most handsome man Hinata has ever laid eyes on.

Maybe he was a model?

Or maybe everyone working for Aoba Josai looked like that.

“Sorry”, the man patted Hinata’s shoulder as he moved past him.

“Wait!”, Hinata impulsively grabbed the man’s sleeve, which made the brunette turn around.

“Can I help you?”, he asked, but before Hinata could answer, the man continued, “o, a beta! Right, one second”, he murmured and then produced a crumpled £10 note out of his pocket.

He forced it into Hinata’s hand.

“Sorry kid, that’s all i’ve got”, he said before walking away.

Hinata was so stunned by the encounter that he didn’t get the chance to explain that he wasn’t begging before the man left his sight around the corner of the building.
