Chapter Text
Morgan tightened their tie, crooked like always. They had been tying ties for how many years now? And still couldn't get it right. In recent years Alex had been the one to fix it, but they weren't here now.
Alex was the whole reason behind the suit today. It was their wedding day. Of course Morgan was happy for them, she had to be. Her best friend was getting married. But still, she couldn't escape the growing nothing that had replaced their heart. This felt wrong, it just all felt so wrong. Alex had disappeared for a few months, apparently on some hero arc, and getting married? Married!? Did they even know each other? A few months is not enough time to build a relationship, let alone a healthy one.
Morgan jumped at their phone ringing. Eva, their sister, and maid of honor.
"hello, " they answered.
"are you still coming?" Eva's voice was garbled among the commotion of what sounded like an exciting time. "the ceremony starts in like 20 minutes."
"I can't get my tie right," they complained.
"ugh I told you to just wear a dress," Eva chastised. "but get over here and I'll get Chad to fix it."
"fine, I'll be there soon." Morgan hung up the phone in a huff. "just wear a dress Morgan," they mocked. "its so much easier."
-------------------------
"Morgan! My neer-do-well little sibling," Chad clapped them on the back.
"hey Chad." they responded, "didn't know they were going to let you in here."
"Ha! Could say the same for you," he teased. "this is a hero wedding! Here." he softened his voice and began to fiddle with Morgan's tie.
"are you okay?"
The question combined with the genuine look on Chad's face gave Morgan pause. They knew Chad cared of course, but he was always trying to get them to abandon villainy.
"why wouldn't I be?"
"because your best friend ghosted you to be a hero, and is now getting married," Chad looked up to their face. "I know you're a tough kid, but you don't always have to be. I... I know how hard it is, and.. I don't think anyone would blame you if you didn't want to stay." Chad smiled at them with that hero smile he thought was comforting. "There, fixed." with that he was off to mingle.
She stood in that spot for a moment, thinking. Yeah, maybe they didn't owe Alex showing up to this wedding but, they had been best friends. They couldn't discount all the fun they had had together. The heists, the adventures, the late night roommate talks. It all meant something, so she did have to be here, event if she didn't want to be.
They looked around for a familiar face, any familiar face. There was Chad, Eva, Dave, and various other heros, none of Alex's minions. Just Morgan, the only villain invited to the wedding.
They sighed, feeling the nothing grow a little more, and walked to the ceremony room. Beautifully decorated, colorful flowers lined the walkways, huge windows let in the afternoon sunlight. Clearly Alex had no say in the decorations, not enough of the boring steel gray Morgan had grown used too. They picked a seat on the empty back row. Of course heros were front rowers. They prayed that time would move fast and they could leave before the reception.
Soft piano music began to float through the room. Alex's favorite song: Bella's theme from twilight. They smiled, it was nice to hear that maybe they hadn't changed too much.
The rest of the crowd filtered in the room. The ceremony was about to begin.
The officiant stepped up to the main stage, an arch made of the same colorful flowers. Alex popped up op on the left side. The music slowly changed to the wedding march as the wedding party made their way down the ilse.
They hoped this really was the happiest day of Alex's life.
Then the main event. The bride, Carol Heart. A stunning woman in a stunning dress. It was everything Alex deserved. They had better enjoy being a hero.
"thank you all," the officiant began. "this wedding is a great honor to be at. We are here to join in union a strong, powerful couple. Two people who have changed the world and will continue to do so now together."
Morgan couldn't look away from Alex as the officiant droned on and on about vows, happiness, and.. love. Was this really what Alex wanted? It had to be, it was their wedding. Still, she couldn't help but despair.
" I do. " Alex's words rang loud and clear.
Hero Alex would have to time for them.
Hero Alex wouldn't want to go on heists.
Hero Alex wouldn't be their roommate.
"I do." Carol spoke full of affection.
Hero Alex would always be unavailable.
"and by the power vested in me by the state of Connecticut, I now pronounce you partner and wife. You may now kiss the bride."
A gasp ran through the crowd. Morgan blinked and truly saw what they were looking at. Instead of a kiss, Alex had their hand in Carol's chest. In one swift move Alex pulled their hand out of her chest, held her heart aloft as a trophy, and dropped it into the hands of the person next to him.
Holy shit, was all Morgan could think.
"let every one learn from this day! Don't fuck with me! I can't be swayed, I can't be tricked, and I'll never be a hero." they laughed and disappeared in a cloud of smoke, dramatic as always.
The room erupted into chaos. People running back and forth, yelling and shouting.
Holy shit.
