If someone had told Sam that a tornado had passed through his living room that morning, he wouldn't have had any reason to doubt them. Candy wrappers, action figures, and balled up piles of clothes littered the floor. His couches were buried beneath piles of wrinkled blankets and oversized pillows.
"What'd I miss?" Sam asked as he made his way into the brightly lit kitchen. The smell of coffee hung thick in the warm air.
"Just Cass and AJ fighting over that Nintendo thing again," Bucky said, looking up from his newspaper. An empty, ketchup-stained plate sat before him. "I'm surprised they didn't wake you."
Sam grimaced. Dr. Reyes hadn't pulled any punches with her latest prescription.
Sam meandered over to the fridge and opened it. "Where are they?"
His nephews were good kids - emphasis on kids. Sooner or later, trouble always found them. Just the night before, Cass had accidentally knocked a mixing bowl full of brownie batter straight onto the floor. It was anyone's guess if Sam was ever going to get those muddy brown stains out of his favorite pair of jeans.
"I sent them outside. Seemed like the safest option if we still wanted a roof over our head tonight."
Sam chuckled. "Seems more like you wanted them out of your hair."
"Is it a crime for a man to want to enjoy his breakfast in peace?"
Sam looked up over the fridge. "When you eat the last of the hash browns, it damn well is."
"You can blame AJ for that!"
Sam shook his head. "Excuses, excuses!"
"Take it up with the kid when he gets back in." Bucky leaned back in his chair. "Whatever your sister's paying you to let them stay here this weekend isn't enough."
Sam smirked. "Who says I'm getting paid?"
