Mothers day

Summary:

A look at mothers day over the years.

Work Text:

Mothers day in hatchetfield.

Not much different from any other day in hatchetfield for most.

Not even for many mothers, as not many celebrated this day; some would have completely forgotten the day, some didn’t want to be mothers and well some were dead.

It was never a day that stood out to Emma. Having an abusive mother that she hated with all her guts didn’t help that; but never in a million years would she have thought she would look forward to a single mothers day.

She looked down at her slightly rounded stomach giving it a little rub, “I can’t believe next mother’s day I will be-” she paused to wipe a tear from her face, “-a mother.”

Paul smiled at her placing his hand atop of hers on her stomach, “and an excellent one at that” as if in agreement they both felt the kick from inside the bump.

Paul’s grin widened “see they agree.” Leaning in closer he laid his head by her stomach, “thanks for keeping me safe and feeding me yummy food mummy.” He mimed in a high pitch voice.

Emma bursted out laughing at his act, “you are so dumb.”

Settling down from her laughing fit she shook her head, “you’re an idiot” she finally added.

Paul chuckled, “yeah, but I’m your idiot.”

“Mmm yeah, why did I agree to that?” She laughed.

“I don’t know, probably with my… incredibly impressive romantic moves.”

Emma shook her head chuckling once more, “I don’t know about that buddy. However I do think that those impressive romantic moves did lead to something else.”

“Yeah?”

“Mhmm and I think this thing will just think you’re an idiot almost as much as I do.”

“No fair, for all you know they might think I’m the coolest person on the planet.”

“Well I can see where they’re coming from, and you are currently the coolest person on the planet but I think this said thing might give you a run for your money.”

Reaching over she patted his cheek teasingly but before being able to pull away Paul clasped his hand around hers suddenly silencing them both.

Emma felt the flutter of her stomach as she looked into his eyes, the same crystal blue ones she fell in love with all those years ago; she loved those eyes, she loved Paul.

***

Those crystal blue eyes.

How she loved them so much. They held so much meaning to her, they held so much love and they were the kind of eyes she could find herself lost in.

How she had wished and hoped and maybe even prayed that this baby would hold them. And how she had thanked every god out there when she opened her precious little eyes for the first time.

“Did you want syrup?” She was pulled out of her trance by Paul’s voice from the other room, she looked back down at her baby to find her still gazing up at her while she nursed peacefully, a little hand resting on Emma’s chest.

“Yeah that would be great” she called back bringing her head back down as soon as she was done talking.

And it was then that she was done feeding. Moving her to rest over her shoulder she spoke softly “Hey Ellie, did you have a good breakfast” she smiled as a little burp escaped her. And when she was done she once again adjusted her in her arms, hugging her closer to herself.

“Food delivery incoming.” Paul announced himself as he entered their room.

Emma smiled over at him, “once again, you didn’t have to make me breakfast.” She added with a little frown.

“Sure I do, it’s mother’s day after all and I would do anything for the mother of my child” he finished his sentence off with a kiss on Emma’s cheek.

She smiled at her husband, “Thanks babe.”

“Here, how is my sweet Elle today?” Passing over the plate of food and trading it for the baby Paul bounced her in his arms.

Eloise made a little grunting noise as he moved her, “that good huh?”

She made a few more noises in response, reaching her little arm up to touch his face, just missing her target.

“Oh I see, that’s cool”

Emma chuckled beside him, “I didn’t know you spoke baby.”

Paul laughed, “most don’t it’s when they find that out, that they use me.”

She couldn’t hold in the snort in response. “What kinda things would someone use that skill for?” She laughed sarcastically.

“Oh well there’s a huge industry behind it and well I can’t really tell you much about it. It’s confidential.”

Eloise whined once again, squirming around in his arms.

“Yeah that’s right. I don’t think she would understand it”

“I don’t like this, I feel like I’m being plotted against” she laughed again.

“Oh don’t worry we wouldn’t do that to you, would we?”

“Gahhhh”

“That means yeah.” Paul added.

Emma laughed, “I guessed.”

“Momma! Momma! I made… what was it again daddy?” Eloise came busting into the room, a plate in hand.

“French toast” Paul who followed behind her, a cup of coffee in hand answered back.

“Yeah, French toast. And I made it myself, with some help from dad” she added proudly placing the plate in front of her mother who currently still looked half asleep.

“Wow, this looks amazing Elle, you made it yourself?” Eloise nodded the smile on her face never faltering “uh huh.”

“Try it momma”

Giving her daughter another smile she took a bite of the toast.

“Is it good?” She frowned looking up at her mother with a hopeful look in her eyes.

Emma smiled, “It’s so good Elle, thank you.”

Eloise smiled jumping on the bed beside her mother before wrapping her arms around her tightly.

“Happy mother’s day mommy!”

Paul watch on as the two girls he loved more than anything hugged in front of him. “Don’t forgot the coffee Elle” he finally said when they had pulled away.

“Oh yeah, we also made coffee” she said with a smile, pointing at Paul as he placed the mug on Emma’s bedside table.

“Aw thank you guys” she smiled at Paul as she picked up the mug then turned back to Eloise who still sat in her lap.

“I’m so lucky to have you both” she thought aloud, and how happy she was that she somehow was fortunate enough to say that.

“Momma, wake up! It’s mommy day!”

Emma laughed at her daughter as she sat up in bed, a smile resting on her face as she looked at her small human.

“Hurry up daddy!”

“I’m coming I’m coming” Paul’s voice called out behind her slowly becoming louder as he approached them.

“I made you card” she grinned a toothy smile at her mum, excitedly handing a handmade colourful card to her mother.

“That’s you, that’s me and that’s baby!” Eloise pointed out the stick figured drawings as she spoke. “And that’s daddy.”

She pointed at a smaller stick figure on the other side of the page, much less detailed than the other three.

Emma laughed, “why’s daddy over there?”

Eloise shrugged.

Paul smiled as he came into the room, handing over a plate of pancakes to Eloise, she smiled at him instantly turning back to her mum and handing her the plate.

“We made pancakes for you” she smiled.

Emma gasped excitedly, “thank you Elle!” She instantly took a bite sighing as she chewed. “It’s so good Elle. How did you know I was craving this.”

Eloise smiled at the praise, “I picked it for you, cause I knew you like.”

Emma smiled, “Thank you baby, I think baby brother likes it too.”

“Really?”

“Yeah come feel” she ushered her over taking her hand and placing it on her stomach.

They waited silently as they waited for the next flutter, smiling when they both felt it.

“He kicked” she exclaimed.

Emma smiled nodding her head, “did you know you were once in there? Just like baby brother, and I could feel you kick and move around?”

Eloise looked confused, “I was in there?” She pointed at her stomach.

Emma nodded lifting her up to sit on her lap.

“You were once just a teeny tiny seed” she held up her fingers to show the size of a seed “and then you grew, and grew and grew until you were a fully formed baby and pushed your way out.”

“Huh” Eloise thought aloud.

“I love you mummy” she grinned as she embraced her mum in a hug, squeezing her tight.

“I love you too baby” she smiled, kissing the top of her head.

“I love you too” she repeated.
