Chapter 1: Humble Beginings

Summary:

Meeting the big boss

Chapter Text

What would you expect in a CEO's personal office? Specifically, a CEO who is the head of one of the most successful entertainment companies in japan. Perhaps some fancy rugs? Custom-made table from extremely expensive rare wood? Maybe a grandiose wine collection?

All those expectations went down the drain once Amelia Watson entered the office of the fabled CEO of Cover Corporation, Motoaki Tanigo, or more endearingly known by the Hololive production community as YAGOO.

The room in question is filled from floor to ceiling with merchandise of his so-called "idols". All the walls are lined with display cabinets filled with trinkets of merchandise prototypes, final products, and even some fan-gifted pieces. The plushies filled whatever little space was left within this already crowded room. If she didn't know who this room belongs to, she would have made the mistake of thinking it was the room of some overly obsessive fanboy. But honestly, she is not too surprised, YAGOO is widely known in the company to be quite eccentric after all.

Ame squeezed herself onto the couch filled with plushies making herself comfortable and readying herself to satisfy her curiosity about this bizarre company.

"So Yagoo-san. Thank you for agreeing to have an interview with me today." Ame begins to engage

"Oh no problem at all. Ame-chan" YAGOO respond with a warm smile "feel free to ask anything, I'll try to answer it to the best of my abilities"

As expected of Yagoo, Ame thought to herself before starting the interrogation. "I am going to start with a simple question first. Are you a mage?"

"Hai, I am indeed a mage." Yagoo responded calmly while pouring the freshly brewed tea for both of them.

"Then why did you decide to start a normal company?" Ame questions as she picks up the tea for a sip.

"I'm not particularly a big fan of the mage culture. So as soon as I could, I distanced myself from it as much as possible." Yagoo said dismissively as he also begins to take a sip of the freshly prepared tea.

"Then why a virtual reality entertainment company of all things?"

"Well you probably already did a background check on me." Yagoo sets down his teacup as he finishes the sentence. "There's nothing too special honestly." he lets out a nostalgic sigh before continuing. "I tried out multiple things to see what piqued my interest, eventually landing on the concept of virtual reality technology."

"I originally wanted to use this new medium to create a game. The whole shift into the Vtube market came entirely from Sora-chan and A-chan." Yagoo affirmed with a satisfied look on his face.

Satisfied with the answer so far it's time for Amelia to address the elephant in the room. The whole point of the interview. Enough of beating around the bush. She lowered her head into the palm of both of her hands and asked the most important question of all. "Well then, how did we end up here?"

"What do you mean Ame—!?"

Without getting the chance to finish the sentence, Yagoo's words were cut off by the sound of an explosion that just occurred from a room nearby. This explosive noise is accompanied by, the usual, loud complaints from Hololive's project director A-chan "Come on guys. ONE WEEK is it that hard to not blow up the office for ONE FREAKING WEEK." The yelling contains a cocktail of emotions ranging from tiredness, annoyance, anger, and beyond.

With a big sigh Ame continues questioning "That......How did a tech company run by someone who wants to distance himself away from magecraft end up with a company that is basically filled with extremely destructive mythical beings?!"

"..." The silence in response to the question is deafening even as a time manipulator herself that few seconds feel like years before Yagoo gives out a defeated response.

"The normal excuse would be to say it is a natural progression that slowly escalates to this point but in all honesty, considering our second talent ever is Roboco-chan, I don't think that excuse is valid."

While Ame was trying to process the information she just received, Yagoo simply doubled down. "Look Ame-chan, I honestly just don't know what to tell you it sort of just happens."

Losing her morale, Ame decides she wouldn't be able to get anything more out of this topic. As such she decides to go for another question, and with a defeated sigh she continues. "Let me ask you this then Yagoo. Do you regret it? Getting involved with the likes of us. You left the practice of magecraft to pursue a normal life. But in the end... you ended up—"

"HA HA HA" Her question gets cut off by the hearty laugh of the CEO. "Sou Desu Ne, so that's what this whole investigation is about." Yagoo was finally able to regain control over his laughter before going on to answer her question.

"Not one-bit Ame-chan. In fact, I would say it's one of the best decisions I made in my life." With full confidence and a bright smile, Yagoo answer the question. " All of you have truly become something that is a treasure to me. Like Sora-chan, I have come to view all of you as my family. I am truly happy with what we have now."

As an esteemed detective and investigator herself, Ame is very good at reading people's intentions with just a mere glance and this time is no different. There is no hint of resentment or ill intent within his voice at all. Ame can tell that whatever Yagoo is saying is genuine and for now, she decides not to push this questioning further.

At the very least she knows that the man behind Cover Corp could be trusted and isn't taking advantage of his power for some shady business. For now, this revelation is good enough for her to keep on working with them.

"I see...Thank you Yagoo. That's all for my questions." She said standing up from the sofa.

"No problem Ame-chan anytime." Yagoo himself also stands up offering a handshake to the young detective.

Before a proper handshake could be exchanged another explosion could be heard from just outside the office door. Accompanied by the expected outburst of rage from the overworked director "WHO SET OFF ANOTHER EXPLOSION, WHOEVER DID THAT THE REPAIR FEES ARE COMING OUT OF YOUR PAYCHECK."

"heh yeah, pretty sure that second one was Pekora-senpai's fault." Ame said before the both of them burst out laughing that the absurd situation going on in this bizarre company.
