“I’m gonna grab some more drinks!” Steve yelled over his shoulder as he walked through his kitchen archway. He startled slightly when he saw Eddie leaning on the kitchen island, a cigarette dangling between his ringed fingers and an almost manic grin on his face. “Hey, man,” he greeted warily, moving towards the fridge on the opposite side. “Haven’t seen you in a few days. Where’ve you been?”
Eddie brought the cigarette to his lips, inhaling before blowing out a plume of smoke. “Around.”
Steve grabbed the six-pack from the top shelf, closed the door, and placed it on the island behind him. “Want one?” he asked, already digging in his back pocket for the bottlecap opener he’d put in earlier this evening.
“Sure,” Eddie agreed, taking a final drag and snubbing the cigarette in the ashtray by his elbow.
Steve popped the top, passing it over, before popping another for himself. “Where’s Y/N?”
Eddie’s lips twitched. “She’ll be here soon.”
Steve leaned his hip against the counter. “You look strangely happy,” he pointed out suspiciously, a little unnerved by the weird energy Eddie was radiating.
“Do I?” Eddie replied, his grin melting into a teasing smirk.
Steve rolled his eyes. “I’m a little buzzed and don’t feel like playing 20 questions tonight, man, so either tell me or don’t.” He raised his eyebrows in a challenge and brought the bottle to his lips.
“Y/N’s not my girlfriend anymore.”
Steve started coughing violently as the sip of beer he’d just taken went down the wrong pipe. He slammed the bottle down and fought to catch his breath. “What?!” he croaked after a few gasping inhalations. “Since when?!”
Eddie shrugged, a strangely proud look on his face. “Two days ago.”
Steve leaned both hands against the countertop as he stared at the smug look on Eddie’s face. “Right,” he replied calmly before shifting his weight and throwing himself over the kitchen island.
His bottles and the remaining four pack smashed loudly on the floor, followed by Eddie’s bottle as Steve curled his hands in Eddie’s vest and slammed his back against the kitchen sink.
“Stevie boy,” Eddie stammered, holding his hands up placatingly. “What the –“
He was cut off by Nancy and Robin’s startled yell of Steve’s name, followed by, “What the hell are you doing, dingus?” from the latter.
Steve looked over his shoulder at the two girls. “This sonuvabitch said that Y/N wasn’t his girlfriend anymore!” he explained angrily. “And then he shows up here with this smug asshole act, and I’m –“
He trailed off when Nancy and Robin parted, and you stepped into the room, having heard his angry rant. Your eyes darted from the broken bottles on the floor to the pissed-off look on Steve’s face and finally landed on Eddie’s guilty gaze.
You pinched the bridge of your nose with your left hand, the new addition catching the light and twinkling merrily. “Eddie,” you sighed exasperatedly, “for the last time, you have to stop announcing our engagement this way.”
