He had enjoyed ten years of being totally irresponsible until the day it happened.
"Linh Song is officially banished from the lost cities!" Councillor Emery's voice rang out over the tribunal hall as the trial came to a close. Tam was shocked, he looked at his parents to see their reaction but they were apathetic at best, his father even looked to be smiling as if to say finally the problem is gone. Like his bramble team he bet on had just won the championship, rather than his ten year old daughter being banished and would probably never see them again. Emery continued "you will have twenty four hours to grab all the supplies you need, say your goodbyes, and then you will be banished forced to go to Exillium, and expected to never return here. Are we clear Ms. Song?" Tam looked at his twin he could see her shaking holding back tears, he wished he could be with her and comfort her so in a split second decision he raised his hand shouting
"I want to go with her, I want to be banished along with my sister!" Gasps of shock echoed through the hall. His mother tried to grab his sleeve and pull him to sit down. He yanked away from her grasp ignoring his father telling him he's making the family look bad
He didn't care.
He jumped the wall and ran to stand by his twins side.
"Are you sure Mr. Song? You have done nothing wrong, your sister is merely a hazard to the citizens safety." Tam nodded he wished he could say something ruder, to scream at the council, to ask them how they would sleep knowing they banished two ten year old children. But they were twins and Tam knew nobody would care, and that they would eventually just be another spot in history like every other child sent to Exillium. So he just said
"Yes Councilor Emery, I am sure, I wish to join my sister in banishment." Emery sat there with his eyes closed monitoring a telepathic debate between councilors. Even if they said no he would run away with his sister. Maybe they could go to the forbidden cities, try to blend in with humans. But after what felt like forever, he wanted to reach up and make sure his ears weren't pointy like Bronte's, Emery nodded
"Mr. Song, you will be banished with Ms. Song, are you two clear." The twins nodded "Very well, tribunal adjourned." He heard his father shouting, that he ruined everything that the council couldn't do this. Tam didn't care what he said or did. He hugged Linh.
“We're going to be fine. We have each other.” he told her as she cried, she raised her head looking him in the eye
“Why? Why did you ruin your future for me?”
“Because we're twins, and even though it's going to be hard, we'll figure it out. Together.” Tam knew that the next few years would not be easy, but they had each other, what's the worst that could happen. But nothing could prepare them for what would happen for what would happen in the future.
