Hermione awakened in a cold sweat and realized that she had made a terrible mistake. The snoring, jobless, feckless, cowardly lump beside her could not have been for her. The litter of squalling redheaded brats that kept them living in abject poverty had to have been caused by a compulsion charm or love potion. She slipped from the bed and crept downstairs.
As she sat weeping in despair, again, the fireplace flared and Ginny stepped out, her face tracked with tears. Harry had called Hermione's name in his sleep again. It had never worked really; even through the Amortentia Harry knew, deep down, that something was wrong. It all kept coming out at night in his dreams. In her hand was the wand Harry had used to kill Riddle. She didn't know why she had taken it, only that she needed it and she needed to see Hermione.
Hermione looked at her only friend and a thought passed through her mind. She went to the mantle and took down the Time-Turner? she had used all those years ago, in a less complicated time when the world had seemed ready to open before her. ...
