[love of yesterday]

Summary:

they say music connects people, but what happens when music is the only strand holding you together? what happens... when there's nothing left to listen to?

Chapter 1: yesterday.

Chapter Text

Jungkook wanders the halls of his new university. He had just transferred from Busan to Seoul, and he didn't know anyone. The halls were silent, except for the slow click, clack, click, clack of his platform shoes hitting the polished floors.

Click, clack. Click, clack.

But as he nears the end of the hallway, a new mellow sound meets the solitary thump of his shoes. Jungkook walks closer and closer to this new sound, until he reaches the door labeled "MUSIC ROOM". He cautiously peers in to find a boy around his age playing the piano. Not wanting to disturb the boy, he listens to his song from outside the room. Every note comforts Jungkook, as he no longer feels alone in this new place. He feels at home, and he doesn't even know why. Jungkook unconsciously finds himself smiling, without noticing that the song had stopped a few moments ago, and the boy was now walking towards the door. The door swings open, and Jungkook is met face-to-face with the pianist.

"Can I help you?" the pianist says, making Jungkook jump at the sudden conversation.

"M-me? Oh, uh hi, sorry, I'm new here and I don't know anyone and I was walking around the halls an-" Jungkook says hastily.

"Lemme guess, you heard the piano and watched me play?" he says, with a slight smirk.

"....yeah basically... sorry about that, I have no idea what song that was but it was so nice and comforting. Oh and I’m Jeon Jungkook, by the way.”

“That’s okay, it’s one of my favorite pieces too. It’s nice to meet you Jungkook, I’m Min Yoongi. If you don’t have anywhere else to go, do you wanna chill with me here? My friend Hoseok is coming by later, but I don’t mind some company.”

“Sure! It’d be nice meeting new people anyways, especially because I transferred mid-year.”

The two boys walk back into the music room, and Jungkook pulls over a chair to sit by the piano and watch Yoongi play the song again. Jungkook had never before thought that he could be in such a deep trance with a song. Soon after, there’s a light knock on the door, before the door swings open, and a not-so-quiet “YOOONGIIIII!!” fills the room. Jungkook and Yoongi both turn their heads towards the new boy, who proceeds to make eye contact with Jungkook.

“Oh, who’s this?”

“Hi! I’m Jeon Jungkook, I’m new here but I happened to come across Yoongi playing the piano earlier.”

“Hi Jungkook! I’m Jung Hoseok! It’s so nice to meet you and I’m sure Yoongi’s artistry was a warm welcome to the school,” he says with a chuckle, as Yoongi nudges Hoseok.

“Shut up, Hobi, I’m not all that, I’m a simple music major,” Yoongi says, as he rubs the nape of his neck.

“That’s still really cool, and, plus, Hoseok is right! Your piano was really nice to hear!” Jungkook exclaims.

The three boys continue talking, and Jungkook finds out Hoseok is also a performing arts major, but with a focus in dance. Jungkook didn’t really pick a focus because he’s interested in a lot of art forms. Yoongi, Hoseok, and Jungkook exchange phone numbers, and they spend quite a bit of time together before heading back to their rooms.

Over time, the boys became so attached to each other, and as people in their year would say, Jungkook and Yoongi were attached at the hip. Hoseok being the extrovert he is, had many friends, but nothing would top the connection he had with the two boys. However, that didn’t stop Hoseok’s individual texts with both of them from being in love with each other. Jungkook would scream in his texts, rather loudly, while Yoongi would talk about Jungkook and his every subtlety. Hoseok had told them both to just confess, but that didn’t happen as quickly as he’d wished for it.

Days passed, months passed, and now the boys were in their 2nd year of college. Yoongi had started publishing songs on SoundCloud, while Jungkook and Hoseok were part of the university’s competitive dance team. Everything was going fine, until Yoongi left his songs notebook open at Jungkook’s place, only for Jungkook to see the whole page filled with his name and a bunch of hearts. He screamed so audibly that Hoseok, who lived a few rooms down the hall, came running into Jungkook’s room and started worrying before laughing.

“Hyung?? Why are you laughing at me and my pain..” Jungkook pouted jokingly.

“Try texting Yoongi hyung and telling him that you found this page and see what you get,” Hoseok replied, after calming himself down.

“Okay, I’ll text him now if you say so..” he says reluctantly, as he pulls out his phone and starts texting Yoongi.

You: Hi Hyung, you left your notebook here and uh.. I found a certain page ?? *pic*

A few seconds after Jungkook hits “send”, Hoseok’s phone starts blowing up with notifications from Yoongi.

“Here’s your indication to continue texting him about it, but let him breathe a little first,” Hoseok said through laughs.

Jungkook nervously waited for Yoongi’s response on his phone, as he kept refreshing the chat. Every few seconds, he’d briefly see Yoongi typing, and then deleting his text.

Yoongi: Typing

Yoongi: Typing

You: Hyung ..?

Yoongi: Okay, uh yeah I guess I can’t even try hiding it anymore, but I like you, I have for a while

You: Oh ..

Yoongi: It’s okay, you probably don’t like me back and we can just stay friends or if you’d feel uncomfortable that’s okay too I guess

You: Hyung, I like you too, a lot actually hehe

Needless to say, Hoseok quickly became a third wheel, but he didn’t mind it much because the boys still included him in a lot, and the couple wasn’t very fond of a lot of PDA. Yoongi and Jungkook were a very happy couple, and they’ve gone on loads of dates with Hoseok as their personal photographer. From ice skating to amusement parks, the couple had done practically everything in their busy college lives. In their 3rd year of college, Yoongi and Jungkook got an apartment close to campus, and they started living together. Although Hoseok didn’t get the place with the couple, it wouldn’t be surprising to find him sleeping on their couch or scouring their fridge. Yoongi and Jungkook started having weekly dates every Saturday, and sometimes these dates would be as simple as a walk or cooking a meal, but also as extravagant as going to the arcade or the beach for the whole day. Either way, Hoseok always called their adoration for each other a sign of unconditional love, and it was quite accurate.

One day, Yoongi got home earlier from classes and noticed a letter in the mail for Jungkook. Yoongi would have normally disregarded it, but something about this letter seemed off. While he didn’t open the letter, he checked who it was from. The name “Yale University - School of Performing Arts” stared deep into Yoongi’s dark eyes. Yoongi stared at it for a while, and it would have been easy to say it was a recruitment letter, but when the red stamp “URGENT” is printed across the envelope, it becomes hard to accept that this letter was an ordinary letter. Yoongi had a sinking feeling in his stomach, and he decided to ask Jungkook when he got home.
