You could be the one that I keep

Summary:

Wednesday had decided to start an experiment. Since her house was standing between two rivers going in opposite directions, there would actually be the chance of sending a message in a bottle and getting an answer. Not that she was interested in socializing with other people, but her curiosity forced her to give it a try.

(Aka: Wednesday and Xavier live near to each other and start messaging each other per bottle.)

Let me say this is my first ff and also I'm german, so my English might be pretty bad and this whole thing is pretty bad, but if you still want to read it go on and thank you.

Chapter 1: Standin' here hoping it get's to you

Chapter Text

Wednesday had decided to start an experiment. Since her house was standing between two rivers going in opposite directions, there would actually be the chance of sending a message in a bottle and getting an answer. Not that she was interested in socializing with other people, but her curiosity forced her to give it a try. So she wrote a small letter, put it in a glass bottle and threw it in the river. She wasn't expecting an answer.

If you find this, throw it in the whisper-river.
W.A.

But the next day, the little bottle actually dangles on some branch in the water.

If you find this, throw it in the whisper-river.
W.A.
Who would send a message in a bottle? And why?
X.T.

Someone had not only found her message and followed her order. The person had written on her note. So she decided to write an answer. Not that she cared about some stranger.

Who would fish a bottle out of the water and follow the orders of a stranger?
W.A.

The next day, there was another message waiting for her.

Someone curious, I guess.

Not like I have something better to do. You're the one who had the idea of sending this message in the first place.
X.T.

On the back of the page was a drawing of the little bottle swimming in the yell-river. (She always thought the names of the river were really ridiculous.) The drawing was quite good. While she was good at writing and playing the cello, drawing had never been one of her abilities.

That drawing is tolerable.
W.A.

And the next day:
Tolerable? Okay... Thanks?!
Quick Question: Is that even a good thing?

Want me to draw something else?

PS: Are we just going to keep on doing this? I mean like we could just exchange phone numbers, right?

X.T.

I'm sure you wouldn't be able to draw an anatomically correct spider.

I don't have a phone. I refuse to be a slave to technology.
W.A.

Umm. One second, how old are you?

PS: Your spider's on the backside.
X.T.

The spider on the back side was really correctly drawn, and somehow, she found herself going on with those messages.

I'm sixteen. Why do you want to know that?
Your spider is acceptable.
W.A.

Acceptable? You don't do compliments, do you?

Well, seeing as you refuse to be a slave to technology, I just wanted to make sure that you're not some kind of bored, lonely, old man, or something.

16? Me too! You know, we could actually know each other in 'real life' and have no idea.

X.T.

I don't think we know each other.
You wouldn't want to know me.
W.A.

Why do you think that???
X.T.

You wouldn’t like me much.
W.A.

What? I don't think you're right about that! I might not know you that much and you might be a little bit special, but I really enjoy writing to you and I definitely think you're quite likable. I do like you, at least.
X.T.

Wednesday didn't know how to respond to that. So she didn't.

The next day in school, she thought about the fact that whoever X.T. was might be going to the same school as her.
She stood at one of the tables outside when Enid came along. Wednesday couldn't remember when Enid started following her around, but at some point, it had stopped bothering her and since Enid was one of the few outcasts at this hellhole of school, she definitely needed Wednesday to protect her from bullies. Wednesday just looked at the little letter again, reading it, wondering why someone would think like that of her when they barely knew her.

"Woah, Woah, Woah! Wednesday, what's that?"

"Nothing," Wednesday replied a little bit too fast and tried to pack the note away. It was nothing, after all.

"Nothing? OMG! Wednesday, did you get a love letter?"
Enid managed to get the letter out of her hand and read it before Wednesday could even react.

"OMG, OMG, OMG! Wednesday! But-...Who's X.T.?"

"Nobody", Wednesday flatly replied, snatching the note back and stuffing it in her pocket.

"Oh. My. God. Wednesday? Do you actually have a crush on someone?"

Wednesday just walked away. The ridiculousness of the conversation had finally been enough for her. Enid was mostly acceptable, but sometimes, she tended to interpret too much into some things. When she started writing those messages, she just did it out of boredom, and she could easily stop if she wanted to. It wasn't like this XT-person actually meant something to her. They just seemed to listen to her without any kind of judgment, and it helped against her boredom.

After school, she still decided to write a new message. Just because she was bored, of course.

Isn't the concept of high schools pretty idiotic?
W.A.

She got her answer before sunset:

In a questioning mood today, huh? Well, if you're saying high schools are one of the most terrible things in this world, you probably might be right. Though on the other side, what would we do without school?
Why, though? Had a bad school day?
X.T.

Every day is bad. Especially schooldays. So boring and useless.
And group projects are just the worst.
You might have a lot of friends, but as someone who hates socializing with other people, they can be worse than family meetups.
W.A.

Hold on. Your family is doing meetups?
Also,' every day is bad' sounds very pessimistic. Then again, it's probably true.
I do understand you. I mean, I do have some friends, but I'll never be able to be my true self with them. So our friendship's someway more like a big lie.
X.T.

Why can't you be honest with your friends? Isn't that why people have them? To share their darkest secrets and get an alibi from them in case you need one.
W.A.

First of all, an alibi? Why would you need an alibi? Also, yes, I guess you should be able to share everything with your friends, but that's actually my problem.
I'm an outcast. Like I have those physich dreams from time to time and I can make my drawing come to life, but nobody knows about it, because:
1. My father is kind of popular and doesn’t want people to know that his son is such a kind of tragedy.
2. I'm not sure if they would even want to be friends with me if they knew.
X.T.

If nobody's supposed to know that, why are you telling me? Also, you're not a tragedy just because you're an outcast, and your power sounds quite useful. I'm a phsysich too and you wouldn't call me a tragedy, would you?

PS: I wouldn't need one since I would never get caught, but I don't need friends either.
W.A.

This letter was an actual letter which was somehow irritating her since she actually had planned on stopping those messages. Enid hadn't stopped blustering about who X.T. could be, and it was really starting to annoy Wednesday. Also, Wednesday had found herself wondering who he could be, what he could be doing right now, or when she would get the next message. She hated herself sometimes.

Today at school, I wondered what you might look like. I mean, we've been writing for some time now, but I never saw you. That's weird somehow.

Your last letter was nice. A phsysich too, then? Well, I guess we do have some things in common. I would never say you're a tragedy. But my father probably would...

I'm telling you because you don't know who I am and because I somehow trust you and think you wouldn't judge me.
X.T.

The word 'nice' made Wednesday scowl. She wasn't nice. She somehow had the growing urge to find out who his father is and strangle him to death. Of course, she had always been annoyed by her parents, but at least they didn't make her feel like she was unworthy, and they had always tried their best to be there for her.

I'm not 'nice', and your father seems to be an absolute, brainless idiot.

You shouldn't trust me. I'm not someone you can rely on.

Why would you want to know what I look like?
W.A.

I don't know. I just wondered. Don't you ever have unimported thoughts?

So not calling you nice. Noted.
Let's say since my mother died, when I was 6, my dad was only focused on his work and his status. Sometimes, it feels like I'm just complicating his life.

Well, I do trust you. I would even-what was it?-give you an alibi in case you'd need one.
X.T.

Not unimportant, but worthless, probably.
That's not an apology for letting your own son feel like that.
I wouldn't need one, and how would you give me an alibi when you don't even know my name?
Also, you consider some stranger you wrote a few messages with as a friend. I'm starting to get why you don't have any good friends. Not like friends would be important anyway.
W.A.

Well, I shared my darkest secrets with you, didn't I?
Since we're talking about secrets, you could tell me your name. I mean, it's not like it would be a problem, right?
X.T.

She didn't answer that message. Him considering them as friend and asking her after her name had been too much for her. Probably, he didn't mean that less to her. No! He didn't mean anything at all. He was useless.

In school on Friday wednesdays teacher decided that they would need to do another group project. Ms. Baker paired them up. Wednesdays group partner were one of the students from the main friend group in the school. She didn't know his name, and since she never bothered to talk to anyone, he wouldn't know hers either. He introduced himself, "Hi! Xavier Thorpe. What's your name?"

Xavier Thorpe

That could, of course, be a coincidence if there wouldn't be his last name.

"Like Vincent Thorpe?"
He looked to the ground with a sigh, "Yes, that's my father. So who are you?"

And it could still be a coincidence, but only the possibility of him being the person she had been writing messages with over the last month made her shiver. It was idiotic. That person meant nothing to her, but still, it made her nervous. And because of that-and she doesn't know why she did it-she said, "Wednesday. That's my name! Wednesday."
He eyed her with suspicion. "Okay?! Well, Wednesday, I'm guessing we'll have to do this project, then."

After the lesson was over, she sneaked out as quickly as possible, which turned out to be useless, since he came to her during the break.
"Wednesday, I wanted to talk to you about our project, but after the lesson was over, you were just gone. So we need to finish that up, right? We should meet up for that. Could we meet up at yours? My father doesn’t like visitors all that much." Seeing as Enid was already coming in her direction, she needed to get Xavier away fast so she just went with
"Alrigth. 001 Cementery Lane. Tomorrow. Bye!"
"Umm. Okay fine. Bye" He waved akwardly before he finally left.

"What did Xavier Thorpe want from you." and before Wednesday could reply "Wait a second! Xavier Thorpe? He's X.T. !!! OMG, Wednesday!"

"We're just working together in that groupproject. I already tould, i found that note on the floor. It means nothing!"

Enid seemed unimpressed, but she didn't push further.

At home she checked the river. Nothing. Well, it was her turn to answer, but she still hoped for a new message. Not like they were important to her. And just out of boredom she wrote one. Not an answer, but a message.

Is there a way of having someone coming round your place without them asking annoying questions?
W.A.

Someone comes round your place? Got a Boyfriend/Girlfriend? Or just a friend?
Well seeing as my dad wouldn't even allow visitors, I can't say much to that.
X.T.

The last setence catched her attention. It could still be a coincidence, right?

Neither. You should know by know I don't have a lot of friends and going out with someone is the last thing that I would do.
W.A.

That night she had to many question swirling through her head to sleep. Fortunately she didn't need much sleep.

After breakfast she checked the river. Empty. But since she had send her last message only at evening, he probably hadn't found it yet.

When the bell rang, Wednesday knew it could only be Xavier, she waited on the stairs for lurch to bring him in.

"Woah! And I thought I live in a palace." He looked around and found her standing on the stairs.

"It's more a haunted house, than a palace." She replied. Which seemed to make him laugh. A nice laugh, not a judging one. Of course, this was the moment for her mother to step in the room.
"Welcome to our home. Wens told us that you'll have to work on a schoolproject so I won't hold you long, but at least i wanted to say hello. Morticia Addams. I don't think Wednesday mentioned your name."
"Xavier Thorpe. Hi! We better gotta get on our project, then."
"Alright. Good luck." She wished before she finally left. Then they walked up together.
"So do your firends call you 'Wens' or..."
"No! And if you are going to mention that name ever again you'll only have 9 finger left."
Instead of being horrified he just bursted out into laughing.
"That wasn't a joke." She said flatly.
"Alright!" He rose his hands in some kind of surrender, but still this smug smile didn't leave his face. For a moment she wanted to scratch out his eyes.
She led him into her room and the first thing to catch his attention was her modell-gioutuline. "Is that a gioutuline?"
"Obviously. Can we work on our project now!"

After two hours of working, before they were finished. When she bend down to pick up her stuff her necklace hung out of her shirt.
"What's that?"
"A necklace." was all she gave him. After a disappointing of his way to green eyes she added "I got it from my mother, when i started at highschool." She turned it in her hand "W and M, because of our initials. It's useless."
Some kind of recognition run over his face. As if he just noticed something he hadn't before. She stuffed it back under her shirt. "I think we're finished here."
"Yeah, right..... Is it possible we know each other?"
Was he starting to get, who she is?
"If you haven't bullied Enid or my brother before, i don't think there would've been a reason for me to meet you."
After a moment of silence he asked "So you're friends with Enid Sinclair?"
"I'm protecting her from bullies." That was all he needed to know right now.
"Alright. Does this happen often, bullying i mean?"
"Not, since I told them a lesson."
"She is lucky to have you. Not every outcast gets protected like this and nobody should have to live with that."

After that he left and she was released. Completely(or probably not). She hated socialicing. And after their presentation she would never have to speak to Xavier again. She would never find out if he was XT or not. And that didn't make her sad at all. She was just curious. Yes that was all. She wanted to solve the little mystery and after that she could forget Xavier as much as she could forget XT and the messages they wrote. Easily.

You know, there is this ball thing in a few weeks. Assuming you're on the same highschool as I am. I guess you won't go, but you know i think that can actually be a lot of fun.
X.T.
PS: Why are we even signing our letters anymore?

Of course, I won't go. Too much socialicing and also I wouldn't know someone who would be willingly going there with me.
Fun? I don't think so. Dancing might be great, but not on a ball with 100th of drunken teenagers.
W.A.
PS: It's tradition by now. Don't you dare breaking it.

You think dancing is great. I think that's the first time you even used that word. That must mean something.
It could still be fun though.
X.T.
PS: If it's so important to you, I promise I won't. (:

You really want me to go there, don't you?
If someone acceptable would ask me, i would probably go. But there aren't much acceptable people out there. Also not if it has a ridiculous theme like last year.
W.A.

Seeing as 'acceptable' is the highest compliment you can give to a human being that might be harder, than it sounds.
On a scale from 1 to 10 how acceptable am I?
X.T.

It isn't. I don't do scales.
If it makes you feel better, you are rather tolerable.
W.A.

It isn't? What have you ever said nicer than that about someone?
Yeah that makes me feel better, thanks. (;
X.T.

Stop drawing faces on your notes that's ridiculous.
I told you I don't do 'nice'. Also it's not my fault, humans aren't more than acceptable.
W.A.

Wednesday started to note some changes. She seemed to get unpacient. She couldn't wait for the next message, as soon as she send her own. She found herself wondering about hom more and more. And things like going to a ball honestly didn't sound as terrible as it had before. Tomorrow would be her presentation with Xavier. She hadn't found anything new about him, but the fact, that his mother died ten years ago, what would fit. But she needed to have realistic proof. She'd probably need to ask him, to get that.

Chapter 2: I'm reaching for you, terrified

Notes:

So, new chapter! I want to thank you for all your support, kudos and comments. I actually thought, nobody would like this. So, really thanks.
I hope you like this chapter too. Have fun reading. (;

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

So you're saying you would go with someone acceptable and I am rather tolerable.
Would you go there with me?
X.T.

Have you missed my last message or something? You're jumping back to the message before that. You've already answered that one.
W.A.

Yours hadn't been here, when I send it.
Also you didn't answer my question.
X.T.

We don't even know each other.
W.A.

We probably do.
X.T.

No.
W.A.

Well, we could.
X.T.

This conversation ends here.
W.A.

Please!!!
X.T.

I'm sorry!
X.T.

I'm sorry for annoying you. Just please stop ignoring me!
X.T.

I'm not ignoring you. I slept and then I was at school. Shouldn't you've been there too?
Why is it so important to you, that I go to that idiotic, childish ball?
W.A.

Wait, you don't. Well, then sorry for the spam. I haven't been feeling well, so I stayed at home.
I should've thought about you being in school, though.
Have you ever considered, that I would really like to meet you like in 'real life'?
X.T.

You're an idiot. Also you haven't been feeling well? How could you write three messages, while not feeling well?
Why would you want to meet me?
W.A.

Nice. But right, I just remembered you don't do nice.
At first I thought you were actually worried.
You mean a lot to me and I tried to imagine what you look lie and I just don't know and that's just terrifying. I want to know what your voice sounds like. And actually I think I met you a few days ago.
X.T.

You sound like a stalker.
W.A.

Not everyone who's interested in you is a stalker.
How comes you're so sure of that?
Have you never wondered what I look like? I mean like never?
X.T.

Interested? What's that supossed to mean?
I just know it.
No I never did.
W.A.

I think you're lying!
X.T.

And yes, she was. She was lying, cause thinking about him, wondering what he looked like was almost everything she had done the last few weeks. And she hated herself for it. Why couldn't it just stop.

What Wednesday also hated was changes. At least unnecessary changes like their teacher getting sick abd their presentation getting delayed, which had been the only reason she even forgot about it.

"OMG. Wednesday this year the ball will be a maskball. Isn't that super cool? Huh, you should definitely come this year. Is there a chance you'll finally intruduce me to XT?"

"No, you're being ridiculous. I told you there's no XT!"
"What's an XT?" a boys voice spoke from behind Wednesday. Not a boys, Xaviers. She turned around to face him. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." "It's her secret boyfriend!" Enid yelled out. Xaviers mouth fell open. Wednesday felt her cheeks heating up. "Enid, just stop it! I just found that note on the floor and I don't have a secret boyfriend!", she tried her best to make her voice remain calm. "What are you even doing here?" she turned back to Xavier who was repeatingly blinking, before he answered, "Umm, I just thought we should practice our presentation one more time, before the presentation." The presentation? She had completly forgotten the presentation? "Yes right. Better we go, before she has the next idiotic idea." She shoved him away. "So, that note you talked about-" "Was nothing you have to worry about." "It's just-" "Can we start now?" "Of course." Why did Xavier want to know about the note so badly? But Wednesday knew why. Because maybe he was the author of the note.

The presentation went over issueless. "Wednesday, wait!" She was just about to leave. If she would've just been faster. "I wondered if, well if you're going to attend to the ball?" She narrowed her eyes at him "No." "Alright!" he said and put a smile on, but she could hear the disappointment in his voice. "Why?" "Oh uh, I was just curious."

Curious

Curious like the person she had writin so many messages.
Curious like the person she hadn't been able to forget about.
Curious like the person that never left her mind.
Curious like the person that would fish a bottle out of the water and follow the orders of a complete stranger.

I will go to that ball with you under one condition. It's a maskball, right? So I won't take my mask off. And I won't tell you my name.
W.A.

Wow, really. That's great. And that's fine, by the way, but don't you think I'll still recognize you?
And why the sudden change of heart?
X.T.

You won't.
W.A.

Wednesday woke up the next morning nervous and irritated. Why had she even written this? On the other side she was oddly looking forward to going to that ball.

"What's the exact theme of the ball this year?"
"A black and white maskball. Why? Are you coming?"
"No! I just wondered."
Enid didn't seem convinced and sighted "I probably won't go either. I mean who would want to go with me."
Wednesday wasn't a match maker, but she was observant.
"This gorgon boy from the year over us is interested in you.", she said monotone as always.
"OMG! Are you talking about Ajax? He's so cute! Do you really think that?" Instead of replying Wednesday decided to walk away. She wasn't in a mood to talk about stuff like this. She generally wasn't.

Do you still want to go to the ball with me?
X.T.

Why shouldn't I?
W.A.

Probably because of all the doubt you had this morning!

I don't know. Just wanted to make sure, I didn't made it up or something.
X.T.

I don't change my mind that often. You're being ridiculous.
W.A.

Wednesday wasn't a person who enjoyed shoping, but she knew, that she would need a dress for the ball. In the end she decided to sew a dress plus a mask on her own. She was transporting her sewing-stuff up to her room. "Are you sewing something, Darling? You haven't done that in a while." "Obviously." Her mother rised her eyebrows "I wondered if you'll join the ball from your school this year." "Yes." That was all her mother needed to know.

Seeing can be unexpectedly calming.
W.A.

Are you sewing right now? Or is this just one of your random thoughts again? You can sew?
What are you sewing?
X.T.

A dress, obviously. And yes I can sew. Me and random thoughts? Who just rambled ot 4 questions on a paper and called it message.
W.A.

Okay, I may have some random thoughts too sometimes, but that doesn't have to be something bad.
Hold on, you're sewing a dress for the ball? It is for the ball, right?
I'm gonna be so underdressed next to you.
X.T.

You're being ridiculous again. Yes, it's for the ball. Why would you be underdressed?
W.A.

Because you're coming in a dress you did make yourself and I don't even know what to wear. I'm gonna look like an idiot next to you.
X.T.

That's probably because you are an idiot.
You don't even know how I look and also, it's not that complicated to find something to wear.
W.A.

Thanks. ;)
I've imagined. And it's not like I don't have something wear. I just haven't chosen yet.
X.T.

It's not that big deal. Just pick somethind and try not to look completely ridiculous. Don't forget your mask.
And stop imagining me!
W.A.

I'm nervous, okay?
And I won't stop. I don't even think I could, but since we're going to finally meet each other, I won't have to anymore.
And before you say, you didn't imagine how I look like. I know you did. You must've! At least once.
X.T.

Why would you be nervous?

She herself wasn't, obviously.

What do you mean you couldn't?
I didn't.

She didn't. Never.

W.A.

How could I not be nervous?
I couldn't stop imagining you. You're constantly on my mind. I can't change it.
I really think you did.
X.T.

You're just being ridiculous again.
W.A.

Chapter Text

On friday she woke up with this terrible, nervous trembling in her stomach. Tomorrow would be the ball. She went to school, hoping that Enid wouldn't talk about the ball. Unfortunately the ball was all Enid wanted to talk about.
"You know, I'm so excited. Ajax and I are going to the ball together. It will be so great. You should do come. I mean, you could come without a date too." "I'd rather die." Wednesday hated lying to Enid about this. She never had problems with lying, but it was different in this case. "No, wait. Somethings wrong. I see that. Are you lying to me?" Since when could Enid tell if someone was lying to her.
"Why should I?" "Seriously? Are you going with Xavier? I was right all the time, wasn't I?"
"I'm not–I–I don't know.", Wednesday said unsure. "How can you not know?", Enid wondered. "It's complicated." "Oh, come on, Wednesday! Just tell me!" Wednesday walked away. She would probably tell her someday, but she couldn't today.

When she had thought friday was hard, she now knew Saturday was worse. She woke up way to excited. The whole time her mood switched between excited or anxious and nervous. She wasn’t like that. She wasn't afraid. But if she wasn't like that, why did the little bottle dangling in the river almost make her smile.

The big day!!
You still want to go, right?
X.T.

Yes, I still want to go. It's not that special. It's just a ball.
W.A.

The time was standing still. She hated herself for being so nervous, but she started to think that she'd have to accept it.

Btw where are we going to meet and when? We never spoke about that.
X.T.

We can wait in front of the gym.
What is 'Btw' supossed to mean?
W.A.

It's short for 'by the way'. How can you not know that?
I've never been that inpacient.
X.T.

You're being ridiculous, again. Why should I know?
I think you're generally a inpacient person.
W.A.

What do you think? How many messages can we send until we'll have to get ready?
X.T.

Since it's already 5pm. I would say not more than this one and probably you're answer.
W.A.

This means this is the last message I'll send you, before we finally meet each other. I've waited for this moment so looong.
X.T.

Wednesday got his message, before she decided to get ready. She had made a black dress, of course, and had sewed in some white roses. In a similar pattern she had also made the mask. She braided her hair to a circle on her head and put on the mask. She looked in the mirror. She was way to nervous, to decide if she was looking ridiculous or not. At least nobody would recognize her like this. She walked over to her highschool. It wasn't far from her house. Even though her shoes were pure tutore and sadly not the good kind of tutore. There were a lot of students standing in front of the school, waiting for it to get opened for the ball. She could see Enid with Ajax. "Codeword: Message in a bottle." She heared a voice, definitly Xaviers voice, saying behind her. She turned around. His mouth clapped open. "That was three word. A code word is ridiculous and also we haven't been .essaging a month long, you can't have waited that long." "You–You look–" "Copletely ridiculous, I know." "No, you–you look absolutely incredible. You're beautiful. I couldn't have imagined–What I mean is–Uh, you just look great." "You haven't stuttered that much on paper." she flatly noted. His face lit up and she thought she saw him blush a little bit. She knew it was Xavier. He was wearing a mask, but that didn't change much. Did he recognize her too? "Xavier Thorpe?" She said. It wasn't really a question, she knewwho he was. He grinned "You know me?" "I know your name." That didn't stop him from grinning. So she decided to add "I know a lot of names." "Want to go in?" She nodded and as he held his elbow out for her she chose to take the opportunity. "How did you know it was me or have you told your 'codework' to five other people before me?" He chuckled softly "I don't know. I just saw you and it kinda just seemed ... right?" Inside of the gym were a lot of decorations, but fortunately everything in black and white. She could hear a classical piece playing. It was 'Ghost Waltz' from Abel Korzeniowski. "Do you want to dance?" She actually wanted to. She always had loved dancing. "Is this how you ask a girl for a dance, Thorpe?" He laughed "Okay, you asked for it." He bowed down and held one hand out. "Mysterious girl I still don't know the name of, would you by chance let me have this dance with you?" "You didn't need to do it that dramatic! But yes, we can dance. Though, you should know I have some kind of own dancestyle." She answered and they went onto the dancefloor together. Wednesday started dancing and for the first time that day she really felt relaxed. She let herself flow with the rythm of the music and Xavier was trying to keep up with her. "You're a great dancer. How can it be, that you're good in everything you do?" Xavier said as soon as they left the dance floor again. "I'm not good in everything. I'm just good in most things." He chuckled "Want to get a drink?"
The night went on like that and Wednesday quite enjoyed his presence. It was 11:45pm now. "So umm, do you want to tell me why I'm not supossed to know your name? Only if you're okay with that." She considered the question. She didn't really knew it herslef. "It's probably just, that I don't want to lose what we have. I mean I do trust you and I don't think you'd judge if you'd know who I am, but I don't want things to change." "You know, sometimes change can be a good thing." He stepped closer to her. "I understand your fear and it's fine if you won't tell me your name. It's just I would really like to see you more often than just once in a month. I enjoy writing with you, but I enjoy spending time with you even more and I really like you." Silence sunk in between them. It was first broken by an announcement. "Here's principal Miller. I hope you all had a wonderful night. It's 11:59pm and it's time for the results of the dreamcouple votes." Wednesday scoffed "What an idiotic activity." Xavier chuckled. The principal climbed out to stage. "I'll have to say, counting votes for a maskball was a bit more complicated, than it had been in the last years. But, in the end, it was pretty unanimously voted for one couple. For Xavier Thorpe and his unrecognizable companion. We want you to come up to the stage." The crowd cheered. That was impossible. Xavier gave her an encouraging smile "I told you, you look great." He was slowly taken her hand in a light grip. And they walked up to the stage. "Well, congratulations you two! I think it's time to lift a big secret, now. Would you take your masks down?" She shot Xavier a horrified look. Telling Xavier who she was would be one thing, but the whole school, everyone who hated her. She whispered words she nirmaly didn’t say often "I'm sorry", before she ran out. The people gasped and screamed. Wednesday hoped she wouldn't expose Xavier. But getting left behind by a mysterious, unknown person was better than being seen with Wednesday Addams. "W-Wait!" Xavier called after her. She just left. She walked outside.
It was dark and Wednesday had always admired the dark, but she didn't admire it being to dark to see. She felt so ridiculous. Coming to a ball, leaving before midnight, holding her identity a secret.
She had always hated those kinds of cliche. She had hated Cinderella, when her mother had told her her story and she hated it now, when she was the Cinderella in her own story.
"Wednesday?" Enids voice called out.
"Shouldn't you be with Ajax."
"He can wait. What can't wait is the truth and also Xavier. He is looking for you."
"He isn't. He is looking for the person he thinks I am. He is looking for W.A.."
Enid sat down next to Wednesday. "I don't think there's much of a difference. I think he still likes you. He probably even knows already."
"How did you even know?" Wednesday wondered.
"Well not to many people would show up with Xavier Thorpe only to run away at the end and I knew that if you would come, it would be with him. I think you should talk to him."
"What would I even say?"
Enid sighted "Do you like him?"
Wednesday remained silent. She didn't like anyone, right?
"Wednesday, just be honest with yourself for once!" Enid seemed mad, but at the same time conercerned.
"I think-He's tolerable, I think."
"Well, then tell him that and stop running away from your own feelings!"
"Fine" Wednesday replied after a while.
Enid smiled reassuringly. Wednesday stood up and searched Xavier. Enid was right. She knew that.
"Xavier" was all she got out when she finally found him. "Listen, Wednesday, I-" his face crumbled "What I meant to say was-"
"You know my name."
"I-Well, there aren't that much people who would fit to W.A. and has this unique personality and then I heard you and Enid talk about the note and...Well, I may be an idiot, but I'm not that dumb."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"I thought you wouldn't want me to know, so I thought I'm just gonna wait until you're ready to tell me by yourself."
Remembering what her actual mission was she swallowed and started "You are tolerable."
He chuckled. Not in a mean way. "I like you too, Wednesday."
"I didn't say that."
"But I heard it."
It was inlogical and irratinal, but it was right and as he slowly reached out for her and she stepped forward and took his hand. "I don't care who you are, because I know how you're and that's enough for me."
With that they closed the gap between them and kissed.
And for this moment, the world was in place and maybe, just maybe Wednesday smiled a little bit.
