Despite popular belief, Izzy did have a lot to manage when it came to the upkeep of any ship he was on.
Sure, Bonnet had a nice ship by all accounts, but he had exactly zero sense when it came to maintaining it or its crew, so, Izzy was the one in charge of stocking all the non-food items. He supposed leaving Roach to the food would be for the best, allowing wee John to go purchase the gunpowder on the caveat that Oluwanda was the one to make the deal and pay for it. This left Izzy to get all the other necessities that most don't realize they needed or squandered quickly.
Everything from cheap spirits and linen for bandages to spare paper for Lucius’s writing.
The one time he mentioned to Bonnet the importance of cheap fabric aboard he went on a tirade about the beauty of fine fabric, entirely missing the point.
While Izzy may have enjoyed having someone to help carry the supplies, he didn't want to deal with Lucius or Pete complaining about the weight or how long it took to get it all, the way it often went with Edward, him moaning about just getting back to the ship because he was bored.
Izzy didn't like the idea of those two complaining the entire day on land, especially since for most of the crew it was meant to be a leisure day. they would want to spend their leisure day doing something they enjoyed, so Izzy told them to get lost as soon as they got off at the docks and he went his own way for supplies.
Because of this, Izzy managed to get a large bag, and stuff all the needed supplies in it at once, only having to make two trips back to the ship with it, keeping all the cheap spirits locked away from the crew who would undoubtedly drink it. Izzy enjoyed a drink as much as anyone, but when it came to a crew this size, they couldn't afford to lose a body, especially not to someone wanting a swig.
On his last stall of the day, Izzy was already feeling the aches and pains of the dry dock weighing on him.
All the walking and avoiding those not looking where they were going, lugging one bag back and forth onto the ship, then just the general strain of day to day. He was ready to lie down.
That was until he saw two familiar-looking heads wandering into a covered street by one of the operating theaters.
Izzy had to take pause.
Izzy has been in this port quite a lot throughout the years, he learned it well, especially that covered the street.
He also learned the reputation this particular operating theater had for the ‘fresh’ specimens they maintained for students to practice on.
It wasn't hard to figure out where those specimens came from.
Izzy didn't waste another second rushing down to look into the ally.
No one.
Not even a prostitute.
That wasn't good.
They couldn't lose any bodies.
Especially not Lucius or Bonnet would be moaning about it for months, or Pete who, for some reason everyone enjoyed.
Izzy moved quietly down the street till he came to a darkened patch with a man standing by the door.
Operating theaters took pride in their speed and efficiency, Izzy couldn't waste any time here as he shoved his knife into the man's stomach before throwing the door open.
Looking around the room Izzy could see his two idiot crew members strapped down to the tables with gags in their mouths, a large man standing over a struggling Pete who was thrashing every which way as the man tried to find the best place to begin harvesting ‘practice organs’
Izzy did not see red.
He has been in situations like this before, he needed to remain calm as he pulled out his pistol and fired it into the man's shoulder, sending him sprawling back onto the filthy, blood-covered ground.
Pete and Lucius looked up to see him, eyes wide with panic as Izzy got closer, ensuring the man stayed on the ground as he yanked their gags out, beginning to undo the restraints on Pete enough that he could do the rest before moving to Lucius
“The fuck were ya thinkin’?” Izzy snapped at them as he did so.
“Not to sound rude or ungrateful but what exactly are you doing here?” Lucius asked haughtily in a tone he only ever used when trying to hide how shaken up he was.
“In case you haven't noticed Mr. Spriggs I am the only one on the crew who knows a rat's ass beyond amputation. Where do you think I learn it?” Izzy said, knowing that now wasn't the time to get into details.
“As of now, I was coming to learn a few new methods for stitching up a body. You two, are going back to the ship.” he hissed, taking off his bag and passing it to Pete.
“put this in my quarters, and don't leave it unguarded, I don't need any fools digging around for things.” he snapped, giving them each a look.
"you are not to go to a market, you are not to see sights, or speak to crew members. you are going. straight. to. the. ship. understood?"
they both nodded, showing exactly how shaken they both were when neither of them argued. before the two hurried out leaving Izzy alone with the guy currently bleeding out.
That was ok, any good medical practitioner took pride in their speed.
By the end of it, while Izzy did end up getting bitten on the arm by that wretch he also left with a wonderful jar of teeth for Jackie the next time they ran into one another.
The adrenaline made him forget his own aches and pains until he got back onto the ship, thankfully no one seemed to keep on talking to Izzy when he still had blood spattered on his clothes.
All except Jim.
“You better have finished the job.”
Izzy scoffed.
“What kind of fool do you take me for?”
At least Jim also had their priorities straight.
Moving down to his cabin, Izzy found to his own relief that Pete and Lucius were down there as well, sitting on the bed with his bag.
“Are you alright?” Lucius asked, standing up and rushing over while Izzy sat down on the floor with a grunt at the ache in his back.
“Should be askin’ you. The fuck were you thinkin walkin by the operatin theaters?” he hissed, looking between the two.
“We saw the city constables,” Pete grumbled, making Izzy snort as he rolled up his sleeve to look at the bite.
Only a little bloody.
“Oh shit! Hand me that bottle Pete.” Lucius instructed.
Pete did so, passing over one of the cheap spirits as Lucius took over dressing Izzy's wound, Pete sitting on the floor next to them, handing over the linen as well while Izzy snapped at them to not overdo it on supplies.
“We don't need that much of those, enough to cover nothing else, we don't need to waste it.” Izzy snapped.
“Of everyone on this ship, i am allowed to worry when someone has a nasty bite.” Lucius snapped, holding up the wooden finger.
Izzy just grumbled i return.
“Oh shush and let someone worry about you,” Lucius instructed as he finished wrapping up his arm.
“I’ll let you worry about me when I can stop worrying about the bloody supplies.” Izzy quipped, waving around the bloody linen on his arm as he did, letting out a loud groan as he stood back up.
“You’ve done enough today, you should rest.” Lucius fretted, trying to steer Izzy back to bed.
“Bull shit, this band of idiots will get themselves killed,” he growled right when a knock came at the door.
“What?” Izzy groaned right as Jim poked their head in.
“Stede and Ed are setting sail, some sort of island thing, Stede says I’m taking temporary command of the crew while you're doing… inventory? I dunno, how long does that take? I hate your job.” they said seriously
“Inventory is a big job especially on a ship like this, a lot to count so we’re probably gonna need at least the rest of the day and evening,” Lucius said before Izzy could say anything.
Jim gave all three a look.
“All of you?”
“Yeah, we need Lucius to write down the number, Izzy to do all the counting, and me to move stuff! It’s a three-person job.” Pete cut in.
Jim stared at them flatly for a moment before shrugging.
“Have fun.” and with that, they left before Jim yelling in Spanish could be heard.
“Alright, common, we’ve all had a big day. Bed.” Lucius ordered.
“Ugh…” Izzy groaned but held out a hand to be helped up, groaning again when he did.
“Are you hurt anywhere else?” Pete asked.
“Only the usual,” Izzy grumbled laying down on the mattress, not complaining when the other two squeezed onto the cramped space, the added weight pressed on top of him felt nice on all the aches and pains, and Izzy could finally sleep knowing that the two biggest idiots on the ship were out of harm's way for tonight.
