Chapter Text
The sound of rain filled the air of Yokohama. The sound of cars zooming through the streets as they rush home to avoid staying in the heavy rain for too long.
Atsushi stared blankly at the piece of stone in front of him. The longer he looked at the rock, the harder he gripped his umbrella. His eye twitched in frustration.
"You lied to me," He quietly mumbled but the frustration was clear in his voice.
Atsushi felt incredibly frustrated, angry, and heartbroken, and all other emotions that he could be feeling at the moment — except happiness of any sort weren't on the list. He felt his world crumble.
Atsushi's eyebrows furrowed and he shook his head slowly. "You said you didn't make promises you didn't keep."
Atsushi's immense grip on his umbrella suddenly softened; to the point where he lost his force in holding his umbrella which made it drop to the floor. Right after his umbrella fell, rain instantly poured over him — soaking him in rainwater. The hand that was originally holding the umbrella fell to his side as it swung around before settling down.
Kyouka, who was watching Atsushi from a distance with a roof over her head suddenly sprang up from her seat and wanted to rush toward Atsushi and help him get an umbrella over her head. She was then prevented from running to Atsushi by Dazai as he put his hand on her shoulder and shook his head to tell her she shouldn't bother Atsushi. Kyouka looked reluctant in leaving him alone but did so anyway.
Atsushi stared emptily at the rock in front of him with a name engraved on it. He attempted to smile but failed as his tears came crashing down. Both the rainwater and the salty tears stained his face.
"The last time I heard your voice wasn't even in person," Atsushi said to himself as he stared at the engraved name with furrowed brows.
"It was in a call," Atsushi said before more tears streamed down his face. "When you told me to forget you."
"How dare you! To tell me to forget you?” Atsushi scoffed.
“Unbelievable," Atsushi called out in disbelief as he shook his head.
He was talking like someone was even listening to every word he was saying. From a distance, Atsushi seemed like he had lost his mind, talking to nothing but air and a rock.
Atsushi’s legs gave out beneath him and he fell to the soaked ground. The black suit that he was wearing was now absorbing the dirt, making it even dirtier.
Atsushi clenched his pants; angry and devastated. Others who watched from a distance felt his frustration just not as intense and heartfelt as Atsushi’s.
"You promised," He paused as he took a sharp breath in.
"You promised you wouldn't leave me! Yet..” He announced in disbelief. “Here we are! You. Six feet underground.”
Atsushi was now whisper-shouting, not having the energy to speak out his words properly anymore.
"When I said to you that we would grow old together, that we'd find a way to be together despite our environments, our professions, you agreed with me. You didn't refuse, you agreed>," Atsushi whispered to himself in disbelief.
Atsushi stood up while more tears fell from his eyes. Everything felt like a blur. What Atsushi was doing didn’t even seem real to him despite him literally doing it in the moment.
"You knew yourself that you would be leaving this world before me!" He silently screamed.
Atsushi breathed in and out before scrunching his face and sobbing. He brought his hands up to his face and rubbed it in frustration and utter sadness while wiping his tears away.
Chuuya looked at the scene far ahead of him. Chuuya saw Atsushi sobbing and felt his heart squeeze. He pitied the boy. If only he had come earlier, he could've helped, but no. He was caught up in his selfishness and left them all alone to suffer.
Dazai noticed Chuuya's face, which was looking at Atsushi in regret. Dazai walked towards Chuuya and hugged him from behind, which made Chuuya flinch.
"It's not your fault. You did your best," Dazai whispered in Chuuya's ear as he slung his arm across the shorter boy’s shoulder.
"Well, yeah. But I could've done better," Chuuya mumbled, he felt pathetic. Dazai sighed and brought Chuuya closer in response.
Atsushi cried and cried. "You could've told me about your disease," Atsushi said in between sobs as he pathetically rubbed the tears away from his face, though it didn't really make an impact.
It felt like a dream. Nothing felt real. This wasn’t happening to Atsushi. No. Not after everything they had gone through.
Yet, the frustration, the sadness, the despair, the anger. Everything. Atsushi felt it, deep in his heart. In his soul.
—
After a few minutes, Atsushi slightly calmed down, small droplets of rain and more tears streamed down his face. He still wasn't okay. But he felt calmer than earlier.
Atsushi then took a turn and faced the other way. He picked his umbrella up from the ground and covered himself once again. Atsushi looked back at the gravestone.
"Until we meet again,"
Atsushi paused before looking at the name engraved on the stone, indicating who was buried under it.
Here lies the grave of,
Akutagawa Ryuunosuke.
"Ryuunosuke."
