Work Text:
The life of a fairy was somewhat difficult. You had to scavenge for materials, make your own equipment, and watch out for predators all at the same time. It made patrols all the more dangerous. If one wasn’t careful enough, it would be easy to end up wounded.
Enter Akiyama Mizuki. Of all the fairies that inhabited her village, she was definitely the most reckless. At least once every other week she would end up with bruising, cuts, and/or scrapes. The young fairy was accident prone.
Thankfully her best friend just so happened to be pretty damn good at healing magic. With just one wave of her hand, any injury of Mizuki’s would vanish. No matter how much the younger fairy tried to wrap her head around it, those spells just seemed too difficult to understand. Plus, there was no need to learn it. Especially when someone like Ena learned that type of magic.
She was sarcastic and hot-headed. It took the smallest things in order for her to get upset. When Mizuki thought about it, it was kind of ironic that someone so prickly knew something so gentle like healing magic. However, on the inside, she was soft and gentle. Ena often hid this part of herself away, yet, when it came through, Mizuki couldn’t help but be infatuated with her friend. She found her to be quite charming.
Despite Ena’s hard exterior, it didn’t take long to understand as to why she began learning healing magic in the first place. Supposedly, she has a little brother who tended to neglect his own wounds, forcing her to care for him in his place. Much to her frustration, she looked after him in her own Ena-y way. It all made sense to Mizuki when she found that out.
Their relationship was one that their village didn’t quite understand.
The two would openly bicker with each other. A lot. It almost seemed like it was happening on a daily basis. Mizuki always had a snarky comment for Ena while the older fairy always yelled at her for said comment. Laced within their words, however, was a trust that couldn’t be broken. Deep down, they both truly cared for each other. That would eventually transform into something more. Neither of them would ever know that, though.
Because of their relationship, Mizuki often found herself within the confines of Ena’s home. The walls were made of branches, the roof, planks of wood, and the doors were leaves. It was the standard living arrangement around these parts, but to Mizuki, it felt very cozy. She was here so often that she could start calling it her own home at this point.
Just like any other random Tuesday evening, Mizuki was in Ena’s hut after coming back from an unsuccessful patrol. In her attempts to scavenge for crafting materials, she was attacked by a ravenous tiger. With nothing but pure gluttony in his eyes, he attempted to pounce onto the pink-haired fairy. He was able to leave a pretty big gash on her leg, but she left the scene alive. Mostly alive. As alive as a fairy with a leg gushing with blood could be.
”I keep telling you to be careful when you go out and you always come back like this… what am I supposed to do with you, Mizuki?” Ena entered the room Mizuki was in with a wet rag, ready to wash away her crimson stained skin as per usual. You couldn’t perform healing magic on a dirty wound, after all.
”How was I supposed to know a hungry tiger just so happened to be in my general vicinity?”
”If you actually payed attention, you would’ve noticed it.”
“Oh yeah? Then why not tag along with me since you’re so good at patrolling all of a sudden?”
”A lot better than you apparently.”
”You get distracted and start feeding the animal-“
Mizuki was cut off when Ena started beating the raggedy cloth into her cut. She was rough with the piece if fabric, making sure to leave no trace of blood and dead skin behind.
”Ena! Be more gentle.” The younger fairy winced, the pain making her want to remove Ena’s soft hand brushing against her skin.
“First of all, I always come back successful. I get all the supplies I need to make my easels and paints. Second of all,” She removed the rag, placing it in a basin full of water. She walked back over the Mizuki. “I would be more gentle if you stopped being such a smart ass.”
Mizuki wanted to came back at her with something witty, something to tease her and catch her off guard. Biting the hand that was feeding you, though? She wasn’t willing to take that risk.
”Just stay still, yeah? You know the drill now, this should be quick.”
Ena hovered her hand over Mizuki’s wound, her eyes closed as she focused all of her attention on healing Mizuki to the best of her ability. While Ena couldn’t see what was happening, Mizuki very well could. Despite the many times that they had been through the process, the pink-haired fairy was enthralled every time.
Wherever Mizuki’s skin parted, it slowly started to rejoin. It was almost like when she sewed, the panels of fabric coming together as she tugged on the thread. Her skin felt like it was being pulled taught at first. The tightness in her leg felt as though it was being wrapped in a piece a fabric. Just as quickly as the odd feeling in her leg had started, however, it started to end. The skin on Mizuki’s leg started to loosen. What was once a scar started to vanish. Her skin was left with a tingling sensation, Ena’s magic still lingering. The brunette pulled her hand away, opening her eyes.
Although her wound was now healed, she still felt empty somehow. Under Ena’s care, Mizuki felt so safe. So warm. What was once a distance, lingering thought, was now a melody that presented instead so broadly in front of the girl. She was beautiful, caring- but stubborn. She was determined though, always pushing through with her projects and getting them done. Of course Mizuki knew that about Ena before. That’s why she had long yearned to get to know her. The thought of her even hurting Mizuki was even to keep her away though.
The day that Ena found Mizuki in the forest all battered and bruised in the forest was what kickstarted their friendship. Even now, the pink-haired fairy didn’t know if that was a blessing or a curse. The closer the two got, the more tempting it was the pull her closer. When you were that close, it only got easier to push her away, however.
”There you go. Good as new.” Ena smiled, patting down Mizuki’s now healed calf. Realizing it was a bit weird, she pulled her hand away.
Mizuki’s wound was healed. So why was the pain still lingering? Deep within the pits of her heart was a burning hollowness. She yearned for the warmth of Ena… it wasn’t fair she could be so kind to Mizuki whilst not being hers. All logic thrown out the window, she did something unlike her.
”Really? You forgot one thing~!”
”Hah?! I didn’t forget anything!”
”Silly Ena! I need a kiss to make my boo boo go away!” Quickly, Mizuki leaned into Ena, placing a quick peck on her lips. As she leaned back, the brunette’s face was a deep shade of crimson, equal amounts of embarrassed and flustered.
Mizuki didn’t want to give Ena the chance to respond. It would eliminate the chances of getting rejected, at least for now. She made a run to the door, flapping her wings and leaving Ena in the dust.
”See you tomorrow, Ena!”
