Chapter Text
My postulancy began in times of religious flux. The newly-elected Curia strengthened ties to local practices, steering the Serapeum away from previous Greco-Roman allegiance. Enabling their god-king’s wanton self-gratification, obviously.
I had my black robes; my gold band; the Reading Room to study originals, and the Receiving Hall to endure Curia ostentation. It sufficed my snarling pubescent self, outraged about everything; religion included.
Yet, our Serapeum was originally a temple.
In tentatively aping my devout colleagues’ actions, I discovered history. Community. A sense of belonging. Things I thought lost to me aged ten, if I’d ever known them at all.

Notes:

Chapter Text
Anit and Wolfe regularly argued about religion. On paper, they shared one, but in practise, surprisingly few similarities emerged. She called him a ‘book-believer’, and as with the Burner derogative ‘book-lover’, it wasn't meant kindly. He didn't retaliate but sometimes his journal would label her religion as 'folk'. He got his religion from ancient books, his practises archaic and his writing, in fossilised hieratic, even more so, compared to her Greek alphabet.
Still, they found common ground. He understood why she still made offerings for the father she had hated and feared enough to murder. Sometimes he even accompanied her.
