Chapter Text
“Hi Julie.” A monotonous voice sounded from behind the rainbow monster.
“Oh, hi Wally! Do you want to play Hopscotch-Tag-Soccer with me? I just came up with it!”
Wally looked down at the chalk drawing of a hopscotch board by his feet, a soccer ball at the end of it. “Okay, how do you play?”
Julie, ecstatic to have someone willing to try out one of her game creations, immediately jumped into her explanation. “So, FIRST you have to hop down the board without falling, and THEN, when you get to the end, you have to run from the other person and not get tagged while you try to score a goal by kicking the soccer ball into that net over there!” She pointed at the small soccer net a few feet away. “Then you win!”
Wally cocked his head to the side as if confused, but said, “Oh. I guess I can try it.”
Julie pushed him gently to the start of the hopscotch board. “Ready?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, GO!”
Wally slowly hopped onto the first square with both of his feet.
“Wally, no! Stop! If there’s only one square, you hop on one foot. If there’s two, you hop with both feet, alright?”
Wally looked at her and smiled. “Oh. Okay, then.” He lifted one foot up and shakily balanced himself. Then proceeded to fall flat on his face.
Julie gasped. “ Wally! Are you alright?” She reached down and picked him up easily, as he only weighs about three apples. She stood him back up, worried.
Wally’s eyes were wide as he looked down at the ground, as if somehow shocked that he fell and was suddenly standing again. He looked up at Julie and relaxed into his usual half-lidded stare. “I am okay. Did I win?”
Julie couldn’t contain a giggle. “Sure, you won.”
Wally’s smile ever so slightly widen and he let out a very monotone “Yaaaaaaay.”
“Let’s go see if Frank will try Hopscotch-Tag-Soccer, ” Julie suggested. She didn’t want to seem mean, but she wanted to find someone who could actually play without so much struggle. It was okay though, Wally was just better at other, more Wally-like things.

Chapter 2: Jokes
Chapter Text
“Heya, kid. Whatcha up to?”
Wally slowed his walking to a stop. “I am going to Howdy’s store to buy an apple. I want to paint one.”
The blue dog nodded. “Well, ya wanna practice your payment joke on me? If I laugh, ya know Howdy’s gonna be cracking up. His cocoon, that is.” Barnaby pulled a small horn out of his pocket to make a little Honk Honk.
Wally began answering his question as if the joke had gone completely over his head. “I don’t pay Howdy for the apples. He let’s me take one whenever I want.”
“Well, pal, don’t ya wanna at least try? I’m sure it’ll make him happy! You’ll worm your way right into his heart!”
The yellow puppet’s eyes widened. “I am okay with trying to tell a joke, but why would a worm go into his heart?”
Barnaby chuckled softly, patting his smaller friend on the pompadour. “That was a joke, kid. It’s supposed to be funny, and make ya laugh.”
Wally nodded like he completely understood now. “Okay. Ha. Ha. Ha.” Barnaby couldn’t help but smirk at the little guy’s flat laugh. It didn’t seem like Wally thought there was anything wrong or different about his laugh though, so Barnaby wouldn’t mention it.
“Alright, ya wanna tell me a good old joke for practice now? I’m all ears!” His blue paws motioned to his large ears.
Wally looked around for a second, coming up with something, before looking back at Barnaby. “What do you call a blue dog? Barnaby. Ha. Ha. Ha.”
At least he tried…? Barnaby let out a small chuckle. He would have to help Wally with his delivery. And his jokes themselves.
“Eh, we’ll work on it, pal.”

Chapter 3: Butterflies
Summary:
Frank seems a bit… confused/annoyed (?) by Wally in the audio clips… I tried to show that here sooo yeah @:)
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Frank’s garden was bustling with activity. From the roly-polies (Frank had read that they are also called “pill bugs” or “potato-bugs” or even “armadillidium vulgares”), to the ladybugs (which are technically beetles, not bugs), to even the occasional friendly spider (which are known to have over 45,000 known species). But the most noticeable critters in the garden also happened to be the most colorful. The butterflies.
Wally had expressed interest in learning about Frank’s plants and flowers. Frank, of course, would never skip an opportunity to talk about one of his biggest interests.
However, Frank couldn’t help but grow tired of telling Wally facts and stories about his garden once he noticed how much the little guy would stop paying attention.
Frank had to end up saying his name five times just to get Wally to look up from a monarch butterfly on a leaf.
“Wally, I feel like you aren’t very interested. Have you even been paying attention to anything I’ve said?” Frank questioned, exasperated.
Wally stared up at Frank. He smiled softly. “I have. I learned that these plants all came from seeds.” He volunteered this information as though it were a mind-blowing revelation.
Frank frowned. “Wally, that’s just common sense. I thought you already knew that…”
“Oh. Sorry.” Wally didn’t act very apologetic, though, as he glanced at where the butterfly had been. Frank did too, noticing that it was gone. He heard a small gasp and his eyes darted back to Wally. There, on his nose- or where his nose would be if he had one, was the monarch. Its wings slowly opened and closed.
Wally stood completely still. “Huh,” Frank said. “I think it likes how colorful you are. Adult monarch butterflies are known to be attracted to bright yellows in flowers.”
“It thinks I am a flower?” Wally whispered in awe. “I want to paint this butterfly. I like how orange it is.”
“Well, if you move it’s probably gonna fly away, but you could always come back with your painting supplies and paint the butterflies in my garden some other time, I suppose.” Frank shrugged.
“Thank you, Frank. I appreciate your garden. It is very pretty.” Wally whispered. He kept his eyes crossed to keep watch of the butterfly.
Frank rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah, whatever. I’m glad you like my garden, though. You have good taste.” He couldn’t hold back a tiny smile.
