Work Text:
Kyōka is an assassin, trained under the king of assassins, Paul Verlaine, then later Akutagawa Ryūnosuke after begging him to kill her.
She thinks that Akutagawa took pity on her and decided to grant her a reason to live.. she didn’t care much about that, her only reason to live is killing.
Recently though, Kyōka had heard about soulmates from one of the Port Mafia executives, the executive explained how you are able to feel any sensation your soulmate feels.
…
That made Kyōka realise that she had a soulmate.
She always had vague sensations of physical pain and touch over her life. She thought nothing of it in the past, that maybe it was something involving her ability, Demon Snow, but now she knew that it was from her soulmate.
Now, obviously, she couldn’t worry herself about whoever her soulmate is, she had to focus on being an assassin, not on her supposed lifelong confidant.
Yet.. she was still a little curious about this person, they get hurt pretty often. It didn’t hurt a lot, the sensations just felt like regular touches. Though, it was worrisome how much her soulmate got hurt. She wondered if her soulmate was also a member of the Port Mafia, she knew she wouldn’t want that, that’d make her more attached to the Port Mafia.. which she didn’t want.
She wanted to be on the good side, the light. The Port Mafia was filled with darkness and no light. She was sure her parents wouldn’t have wanted this for her.
And then Kyōka meets a man named Atsushi Nakajima, who saved her life when she tried to sacrifice herself after defying the Port Mafia.
Atsushi took her back to the Armed Detective Agency, and he and one of his coworkers persuaded her to talk about the mafia’s plans by giving her tofu. It worked, Kyōka really likes tofu.
Over the course of only a few weeks, Kyōka fought Kōyō Ozaki, broke free from the Port Mafia, fought an American with Atsushi, got imprisoned by the military police for a certain amount of time, and was officially welcomed into the Armed Detective Agency after being saved by Demon Snow, which she can now control without the need of her mother’s cell phone.
That was all quite tiring.
Atsushi introduced Kyōka to the other members of the agency, one of them especially caught her attention.
That member? Miyazawa Kenji, a boy her age who has an ability that grants him superhuman strength and insane durability.
She had a suspicion that this boy could be her soulmate, mostly because of his superhuman durability, meaning when he got hurt, he would only feel little to no pain.
She’s taken to observe Kenji closely to either confirm or confute her suspicions, it may have seemed a little creepy to watch someone this closely.. but Kyōka had to know the answer.
…
The answer is a definite yes.
She witnessed Kenji get kicked in the head by a cow a few times now.. and she felt the sensation of being kicked in the head. Now, this, this was conflicting.
Kenji was overly nice and optimistic, he seemed like a good person. So Kyōka decided to become friends with him. (After asking the other agency members how to do so.)
Kyōka headed to Dazai Osamu first, his advice was a shared interest like.. suicide? Strange.
Then to Atsushi, he advised to be kind and respectful to befriend people.
Next, Kunikida Doppo. His advice was too long and Kyōka stopped listening the moment he said the word ‘ideal’.
Then, Tanizaki Jun’ichiro and his younger sister, Naomi. Kyōka saw that the two of them were acting weird and that Naomi had her hand up her brother’s shirt, Kyōka decided not to ask and just went on with her day.
Kyōka spotted Yosano Akiko and asked her for advice on befriending people, Yosano’s advice was to ‘assert dominance’.. no.
Now was time for the last person she could receive advice from.. Ranpo Edogawa. Ranpo immediately knew that was trying to become friends with Kenji, as expected from the greatest detective. He advised her to organise a picnic for herself and Kenji.
That was the only good advice she’d gotten from any of her colleagues, she doesn’t think any of them have any actual friends outside of the agency except for Ranpo.
So Kyōka followed Ranpo’s advice and prepared a picnic after finding out what Kenji’s favourite food was. (Which she found out was tempura soba.)
Kenji happily accepted the invitation and now they were both sitting in a beautiful park somewhere in Yokohama.
They had a long conversation about farming, mostly led by Kenji because Kyōka didn’t know much about farming.
After a while, Kenji just fell asleep. Kyōka was a bit surprised, then she remembered it was due to his ability, nothing was wrong.
Kyōka felt relieved, she had successfully made friends with her soulmate.
