Work Text:

“You’re doing great” The cockiness was very obvious in David Wallderman’s voice as he swayed the two around.

“You were expecting me to be a bad dancer?” Sammi Mercia’s voice held the same smugness.

“Well you sure are a bad walker, so one would assume.” David looked her dead in the eyes. The music began to speed up.

“Oh, honey. I think you're thinking of yourself.” Sammi laughed at herself. She pulled away from David in a spin, her left hand locked in his right as she fell backwards.

“No, I don’t think I am.” He stated plainly. There was something in his eyes, a mischievous glint of some sort. Sammi half closed her eyes, a smile spreading across her face. David pulled her back to him, they stood staring at each other before they moved on the next move. Sammi would step forward, David would step back. Sammi would move her left, David would move opposite of her. The music would speed up once again, and most people would move off of the dance floor. However, Sammi and David wouldn’t even break eye contact.

“Are you getting tired princess?” The prince asked as he spun Sammi around. Sammi laughed in response.

“Never.” She narrowed her eyes. They moved quickly across the dance floor. They swayed back and forth and they spun as the music sped up even more. Everyone was standing around the couple and watching them as they moved flawlessly around the dance floor.

“Have you been practicing?” Sammi questioned. “Cause if you want to back out now I won’t mind.” She said almost bored like.

“I have, thank you for noticing.” David smiled smugly. “And I don’t think I would like to back out now, but how ‘bout you?” The cockiness became even more apparent in his voice, it annoyed Sammi.

“No thank you.” She said in a voice that was almost like honey. David always irritated her, she had always hated him even from a young age. And here she was, dancing with him. In front of everyone. The music sped up again. David almost looked as annoyed as her. David didn’t like Sammi either. That seemed to be the only thing they agreed on, hating each other. They step to each other's sides, not breaking eye contact. Sammi stepped forward, David stepped back. He spun her away, then pulled her back. David pulled Sammi close to him. He dipped her backward. They spun around, the music speeding up, the audience watched in silent admiration. The two’s eyes were locked together as they moved in their swift tango. Dancing flawlessly. David led her the right before spinning her away for him quickly to the left. He pulled Sammi back to him. David then picked Sammi up bridal Style and quickly spun around, then dropped her. The crowd gasped, but Sammi expected it. She fell easily onto her feet, quickly moving away from David before spinning back to him. Their hands were still tightly interlocked, so her back was now pressed against his chest. They spun once more, before Sammi stepped away. The music finally slowed a bit, though it was still fast paced. Sammi’s eyes remained locked in Davids as she stepped left then back then right and left again. The two somehow never lost pace with the loud music. Sammi spun away one final time as the music finally slowed for the last time. David then slowly pulled her back, dipping her over his arm as the music finally came to an end. Both Sammi and David stepped back from each other, finally realizing just how out of breath they were. The crowd was silent for a few more seconds, as the prince and the princess just stared at each other trying to catch their breath. Then the crowd suddenly erupted into cheers of excitement. The pair turned to looked at their audience, before bowing.

“You put up a good dance, I must admit.” David turned to look at her again, a cockiness spreading through the kind words.

“You're not bad yourself.” Sammi laughed. Both royals stared at each other for a few more seconds before turning and walking away to mingle with the crowd of nobles. The two want to be away from each other as much as possible before they had to surrender to their fate of being married by the end of the night.

“Our future king and queen!” The crowd would cheer. Little did they know, the couple wanted nothing to do with each other. But they didn’t have the choice to make. So they would just try to be away from one another before they were stuck to each other. Though they had to admit, the friendly competition dancing together brought them, was the only fun part. But for now they were still enemies. For now.
