Chapter 1: A Monster?
Chapter Text
It was a quiet night in the Grass Lands, darkness blanketing the rolling plains while the moon peeked through the few clouds that hung in the sky and stars glimmered like distant candles. Most of those who lived there had long gone to sleep, resting in beds, nests, holes in the ground or what have you, lost to the land of dreams…
Most, not all, as the heavy footsteps of a dog grown several times his normal size thudded towards the Candy Kingdom with the young human on his back that was chattering away excitedly.
“What kind of monster do you think it’ll be?” Despite the drowsiness of being woken up so late, Finn had a giant grin plastered across his face. “A gnomeogiantaur? Maybe a fire mantis?”
“Whatever it is, I hope it's worth getting up for,” Jake yawned, his large steps sluggish. “Jake needs his sleepies.”
“C’mon Jake, we’ll sleep better after a monster fight!” Finn was practically bouncing from where he sat on Jake’s back, watching as the candy kingdom grew closer with each step Jake took.
Jake chuckled, “Yeah yeah, I got it. PB said she’d be near that bookshop place, right? Like ‘Take a Books’ or something.”
“I don’t know man, just look for the Princess.”
Jake stretched himself higher to step over the walls of the Candy Kingdom, squinting through the dark to make sure he didn’t accidentally step on someone. They were both looking out for Princess Bubblegum when Finn noticed a crowd had formed in one of the shopping districts.
“Jake! Over there!” Jake followed where Finn was pointing and started towards it, shrinking as they got closer. When the ground was a safe distance away, Finn took the opportunity to vault off of Jake’s back, going into a roll until he popped back up next to Princess Bubblegum.
“Princess! Where’s the monster?” Finn drew his sword, waving it around.
Jake appeared at his side a moment later, “yeah let’s flip its bricks!”
“Hold on a moment you two,” they paused as Princess Bubblegum went on. “It's in the bookshop, but I’m not entirely sure what you’ll be up against, only one candy citizen managed to get a good look at it and, well, that person was-”
“Me! I saw it!” Cinnamon Bun pushed his way through the crowd of candy people. “Hi Finn, Hi Jake.”
“Hey Cinnamon Bun,” Jake said. “What’d you see?”
“The monster!” He yelled. “It had eyes made of glass and red frills on its neck. Also its face was covered in blood!”
Princess Bubblegum gave him a pat on the back, “There there, Cinnamon Bun, why don’t you go sit down.” She turned back to Finn and Jake, “yeah, I’m not sure what he saw, but it spooked him pretty bad.”
Finn drew his sword, “We got this Princess.”
“Just be careful you two,” she said, then lowered her voice. “Maybe check that it actually is a monster as well, you know how the candy people can… over react.”
“No problem PB, we’ll take care of it,” Finn gave her a thumbs up before he and Jake approached the bookshop.
They peeked through the glass window in the bookshop and listened for any noises coming from behind the closed door. Whenever they moved too sharply, the candy people behind them would almost comically gasp and shush each other. There were no obvious signs of anything out of the ordinary, so they approached the door, quietly making their way in.
It was dark inside the shop, the only light present being the street lamps filtering in through the shop window, the books on display casting shadows against the shelves. They left the lights off to not give themselves away as they proceeded further into the bookshop.
At the sound of paper moving, they both froze to listen. A quiet and intelligible mumble followed, but there weren’t any particularly monstrous sounds. Finn and Jake shared a look before slowly approaching the source.
Peeking around one of the bookshelves, they saw their ‘monster’. It was humanoid in shape, hunched over a table and reading some kind of paper using a flashlight to see. Even with the light of the flashlight, it was still too dark to make out any specific details.
It didn’t look like a monster, but Finn had to be sure. His grip tightened on his sword as he yelled, “Hey!”
The figure jumped, fumbling with the flashlight. It spent a few seconds airborne before it was ultimately dropped where it shattered on the ground.
The figure stared at it for a moment, before saying “The flashlight…” His voice was oddly familiar and somewhat dejected; he stayed like that for only a moment longer before turning his gaze to Finn and Jake, straightening his back as he did so. He was taller than Finn when he was hunched over, but now that he was standing up straight Finn could tell he was almost as tall as Princess Bubblegum.
Finn’s grip on his sword loosened. This was a person, not a monster. He didn’t look particularly hostile either, the only thing he could pick up on was confusion
As Finn looked closer, he could see what Cinnamon Bun described on this man. The glass eyes were just the man’s glasses, the ‘red frills’ on his neck was just a red bowtie, and the blood, well that was still blood, but it was coming from a large gash on the man’s forehead.
After a few seconds of this impromptu staring contest passed, the man spoke again, “Who are you?”
“Uhh,” Finn answered. “I’m Finn and this is my brother Jake.”
Then Jake cut in, “Yeah, now what are you doing breaking into the bookshop?”
“Breaking into… oh right, it’s closed isn’t it. That’s why the door was locked,” he looked back at the table. “Sorry, I hadn’t realised. I was looking for a map to figure out where I was, though I still don’t recognise anything. You wouldn’t happen to know where ‘here’ is, would you?”
Finn and Jake shared a look - he didn’t know?
“How do you accidentally break into a building,” Jake muttered.
Finn was the one to respond, “We’re in the Candy Kingdom.”
The man brought a hand to his chin and hummed, but he didn’t otherwise respond.
Jake huffed, “There’s no monster here, it’s just a confused old man. I’m gonna go get the lights.”
The two of them watched Jake go before the man looked to Finn. “Monster?” He repeated.
“Yeah, we were called here to investigate some kind of monster one of the candy people saw, they probably just mistook you for one cuz of the blood and junk.”
“What blood?”
Finn’s brow furrowed, there was blood practically all over the man’s face, he had to know, right? “The blood from your cut? Something sliced up your dome.”
The man only seemed more confused, “My… what?”
Finn pointed, “Your head - did you not notice it?”
Tentatively touching his forehead, the man seemed genuinely surprised when his hand felt blood, “No I… I hadn’t. It must have happened before I woke up…”
He wiped at the blood with one of his sleeves, but even in the dark Finn could tell it wasn’t doing much to wipe it up. He reached into his bag and pulled out a handkerchief, offering it to the man.
“Here, this should help,” he said, smiling when the man took it and thanked him. “You said you were trying to figure out where you were, do you need help getting home?”
Taking off his glasses, the man started wiping away the blood, “I… suppose.” His voice was muffled by the fabric. “But there is a complication regarding that.”
“Complication?” Finn parroted. “If it’s a long way away, that isn’t a problem, Jake can just stretch really big and we’ll get there in a matter of-
“No, that’s not it. I’m not exactly sure where my home is,” he paused. “Or if I have one.”
Oh, well that did complicate things. “How do you not know where your home is or if you have one?”
“I don’t remember,” he answered, pulling the towel away to look back at Finn. “I don’t remember much of anything.”
“Wait, so you don’t remember where you came from?”
“No.”
“What about friends, or family?” he tried.
The man shook his head.
“How about your name? You remember that at least, right?”
The man grew silent, he seemed to be thinking really hard. Then he sighed, “No, I only remember waking up and wandering around for a while before I ended up here,” He gave a humourless laugh. “I guess the map would have been pretty useless in that regard too.”
Finn frowned. His hero side wanted to help this man, but he didn’t really know how to. Maybe he’d have a better clue as to where to start when Jake would turn on the lights and he could properly see the man, what was taking him so long?
As if on cue, the lights overhead flickered on, Finn blinked and squinted at the unexpected brightness. That was very sudden, but at least he’d be able to see who he was trying to help now.
Once he’d adjusted to the new level of light, he looked at the man. His eyes went wide and jaw dropped with a gasp.
“Hey sorry that took so long, I got distracted and- oh my Glob!”
The man, who was currently readjusting his glasses and blinking against the harsh light, was wearing grey pants and a matching grey jacket with shoulder pads, underneath which was a black vest a white dress shirt. But his outfit wasn’t what caught Finn’s attention.
He had dark brown hair, olive skin and dark eyes. He wasn’t just humanoid like the various different species that inhabited Ooo.
He was human.

The man looked between the two of them, confused, “Is everything alright?”
“You…” Finn gaped. “You’re human, like me.”
“Yes, I know that much at least,” he confirmed. “What’s strange is I haven’t seen many others. You’d be the first person I’ve seen that wasn’t sentient snow or candy… or a talking dog.”
“What’s so strange about a talking dog?”
Finn ignored Jake’s comment completely, grinning widely “That does make sense actually, I’m the only human in Ooo, well, I thought I was, but I’m not because you’re here. You’re human, like me.”
His expression shifted, “The only…” The man shook his head, his features returning to a more neutral, if not more tense expression. “What do you mean ‘in Ooo’? Is that a place?”
“Uhh, yes.” Jake answered flatly. “We are currently in Ooo. The continent Ooo.”
The man hummed again without responding and Jake turned to Finn, “What’s with this guy?”
“Um, well,” Finn quickly turned to the man. “Would you give us a moment?”
He nodded and looked back to the map while Finn pulled Jake aside and whisper yelled, “Dude, he’s human! He’s like me!”
“Well yeah, I gathered that, ” Jake whispered back. “ But what’s up with him? First he doesn’t know he’s in the Candy Kingdom, then he’s never heard of Ooo? ”
“He’s got, like, complete amnesia. He doesn’t even remember his name.”
“Woah really?”
“Yes Really! I think it might have something to do with his donked up dome piece.”
“Wait,” Jake shifted his hand to look somewhat like a fish, “ Are you sure this isn’t another ‘Susan sitch’?”
“Yes I’m sure,” Finn said, frowning. “Besides, he doesn’t have gills, not to mention he groks a lot more than the hyoomans.”
Jake narrowed his eyes, “Does he though? ”
“He speaks in complete sentences, Jake.”
“Okay okay, I just don’t want you to get your hopes up again. You know how bummed out you were last time.”
“I know, but this is different,” Finn glanced over at the man who was still looking over the map. “He’s actually human, and I want to help him.”
“I’m with you, but how do we help him? It’s not like we know how to get memories back.”
“I know! Let’s take him to Princess Bubblegum,” Finn blurted out, “She’s smart and stuff, she’ll know what to do!”
“Princess who?”
Finn and Jake looked over to see the man looking back, “Forgive me for interrupting but you were speaking quite loudly.”
“She’s the Princess of the Candy Kingdom,” Finn answered. “She’s also outside. She’s super smart so she should be able to help you.”
“Help… me?” He said, almost hesitant. “You’d do that?”
“Well, yeah!” Finn said. “We’re heroes, helping people is what we do.”
“Oh, well, thank you.”
Finn nodded with a smile, taking his hand, “Come on, we’ll take you to her.”
The man let Finn lead him out of the shop, Jake trailing behind them. His grip felt weak and Finn was sure he could feel a faint tremor. It was worrying, but they were already on their way to Princess Bubblegum, so he was sure it would be fine.
When he opened the door, they saw the crowd of candy people hadn’t dispersed. If anything, it had only grown since they entered the bookshop. Gasps and fearful murmurs emanated through the crowd as they stepped out.
“Everything’s okay!” Finn announced, throwing up his arms, including the one holding the man’s hand. “There’s no monster! It’s just a human!”
As he said that, the murmurs only grew in volume, the candy people whispering loudly to each other. This only stopped when Princess Bubblegum stepped forward to calm everyone.
It took a moment for the crowd to disperse, but eventually the candy people were going off to resume their nights. Once most of them were gone, Princess Bubblegum turned to the three of them. She looked the man over, her eyes lingering on his head injury.
“You’re human? An actual human and not… nevermind. Where did you come from?” she asked, “And what happened to your head?”
“Yes, I’m human, and I can’t answer those other questions as I don’t know the answers,” he shrugged. “I don’t remember…”
Princess Bubblegum seemed confused, “What do you mean by that? You don’t remember how you got hurt?”
Finn jumped in to answer, “He doesn’t remember anything, not even his name.”
“Really?” When the man confirmed with a sombre nod, Princess Bubblegum's expression softened. “Oh, you poor thing.”
“Finn said you’d be able to help me?” The words sounded more like a question than a statement.
“Well… since you have amnesia and to my knowledge there’s no human settlement in Ooo, there isn’t much to go off of,” she said. “Regardless, the first thing we should do is get you to a hospital to get that injury taken care of.”
“Yes, that sounds right, I do feel a bit…” the man swayed on his feet, Finn rushed to stabilise him, “...Faint.”
“Then let’s get to the hospital,” Jake said, stretching himself to form a doppelganger with a stretcher between them, both he and the other him with false lights on their heads. “Hop on the Jake ambulance! Jake-bulance? The Jake-bulance!”
The man stared incredulously, making no move to get closer, “You can… shapeshift?”
“I’m a magic dog, of course I can shapeshift!” Jake motioned to the stretcher. “Now get on, you look like you're about to conk out.”
“That’s true,” he confirmed quietly.
“Come on, that’s it,” Finn coaxed the man towards Jake then helped him onto the Jake stretcher, which he all but collapsed into.
As they rushed to the hospital, Finn tried a few times to talk to the man but he was met with increasingly sluggish and slurred replies. By the time they reached the hospital, the man was staring blankly above him panting through laboured breaths.
Doctor Ice Cream and Nurse Pound Cake were quick to whisk him away, leaving Finn, Jake and Princess Bubblegum in the waiting room. Finn stared at the door they’d gone through, his mind swimming.
Another human in Ooo. Not a fish person, not made of candy, not just a humanoid, a human.
He could hardly believe it, part of him was hesitant to believe it because of what had happened with Susan, but he quashed the doubt. Just like he’d said to Jake, the man didn’t have any gills or fins, he wasn’t a hyooman.
He was just human.
Finn wasn’t the only one anymore.
But there were still dozens of questions buzzing in his head. Where did he come from? Were there more humans somewhere? Why was his outfit so formal? What caused him to forget-
“Finn?”
Suddenly pulled from his thoughts, he let out a high pitched scream but cut himself off when he realised it was just Princess Bubblegum placing her hand on his shoulder. “Yes Princess?”
“How are you feeling?” she asked.
“Huh?” Finn took a second to process the question. “Well, happy? Excited, or maybe confused? Why?”
“I just wanted to make sure you’re okay,” she gave his shoulder a pat. “Finding another human after what happened with Susan, it must be surprising at the very least.”
“That’s for sure,” Jake added. “I mean, where did this guy even come from? Why was he dressed like he was about to do someone’s taxes? And again, how do you accidentally break into a bookshop?”
“We likely won’t know the answers to any of those questions unless he remembers something,” Princess Bubblegum said. “Did he mention anything that could be a clue? Anything at all?”
Finn thought for a moment. He didn’t mention anything that’d answer those specific questions, but he did mention something. “He said he’d seen ‘sentient snow’, all of the snow creatures live in the Ice Kingdom.”
“That brings up the possibility of him coming from, or at least passing through the Ice Kingdom,” Princess Bubblegum noted. “But why would he be there?”
“Maybe Ice King had something to do with it?” Jake suggested.
“Perhaps, but that would be odd, even for Ice King,” She said. “It warrants further investigation at the very least, but for now that can wait.”
After a brief silence, Finn spoke quietly, “Do you think he’ll be okay?” He looked back to the door. “He was pretty out of it when we got here…”
“There’s no need to worry Finn, he’s in good hands,” She answered. “He probably won’t be waking up any time soon though, you should go home and get some sleep then check back tomorrow.”
Finn’s gaze didn’t leave the door until Jake stepped forward and stretched to throw an arm around his shoulders, “Yeah, that sounds good. Night Princess, we’ll see you tomorrow.”
She wished them a goodnight and Jake guided Finn out of the hospital. Walking down the street lamp lit candy streets, Jake was becoming worried that Finn hadn't yet said a word.
“Come on Finn, you know Dr Ice Cream and Nurse Pound Cake, they’ll have that guy back on his feet in no time,” He tried, then smiled when Finn let out a small chuckle.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Finn said, then frowned. “I guess I’m just worried… I know I was saying that he had to be human earlier, but part of me is still worried that it’ll end up all being bunk and there’ll be some reason he isn’t.”
“Well it’s like you said,” Jake shapeshifted fins onto his head. “No gills or frills or nothing, he’s no fish peep. He even said he was human, it was like, the only thing he was sure about.”
Finn hummed his agreement, nodding, “That’s true… Hey, do you think Ice King really had something to do with this?”
He shrugged, “Well the dude’s evil, so I wouldn’t put it past him.”
“Well, yeah, but Ice King freezes people, he doesn’t really use swords or knives… or anything that could cause a slash like that.”
“One of his ice creatures coulda done it,” Jake suggested. “Remember the Ice-o-pede? It had some real chompers.”
“Maybe, but also why would Ice King do something like that?” Finn said. “That human wasn’t a princess, he wasn’t even a girl.”
“Maybe Ice King’s experimenting,” He said, nudging Finn’s side.
Finn scrunched up his face, “Dude, I don't want to think about that.”
“You’re the one who asked,” Jake laughed.
As they reached the gate of the Candy Kingdom and stepped out onto the Grasslands, Jake grew into a bigger version of himself, Finn climbing up his side before he stretched even taller.
“Whatever’s going on, we can work it out tomorrow,” He started walking towards the treehouse. “Everything will make more sense after a night’s rest.”
Finn smiled, looking back at the Candy Kingdom. Jake was probably right, things made more sense when he got more rest and even if not, they’d have the chance to search for answers when the man woke up again. Maybe he’d even remember something after a proper rest.
A yawn brought him from his thoughts as he realised just how tired he was, a wave of drowsiness hitting him like a brick. He partly remembered Princess Bubblegum mentioning something about this feeling, something about ‘andre allen’ wearing off? He couldn’t really recall.
He returned his gaze to the Treehouse, which was slowly getting bigger as they got closer. Yes, they’d find answers tomorrow. In that moment, all that would find him was sleep.

Chapter Text
The next morning, Jake struggled to get Finn to eat something as he was eagerly dragging him out of the house towards the Candy Kingdom.
“Finn! You can’t just skip breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day!”
“I know,” Finn grunted, struggling to drag Jake as he stretched to become bigger and heavier. “I’ll eat on the way, now come on!”
“Alright alright,” Jake shifted back to his normal proportions, handing Finn a plate. “But your omelette isn't gonna be crispy like how you like because you rushed me.”
Finn started shovelling it into his mouth, “Tha’ fi’e, le’s ju’ ge ‘o the ca’dy Ki’gdom.”
Jake laughed, “Whatever you say man.” He wrapped his arms around Finn’s torso to hoist him up to sit on his shoulder, growing larger as he did to make bigger steps towards the Candy Kingdom.
By the time they arrived, Finn had already scarfed down his hastily made breakfast and thrown the dish away, which Jake scolded him for. The two of them made their way into the Candy Kingdom and headed towards the hospital, weaving around the Candy people going about their days.
Entering the hospital, they managed to spot and wave over Nurse Pound Cake.
“Hello Finn and Jake,” She greeted them with a smile. “I assume you’re here about the human?”
“Yes!” Fin was practically jogging in place with nerves. “How is he? Is he okay? Is he-”
“Woah Finn, he’s alright,” She said, Finn coming to a stop to listen. “There were a few complications and things he’ll need to look out for, but it’s nothing that won’t heal.”
“Wait, complications? What do you mean complications?” Jake asked.
“Well, his head laceration was by far the worst of his injuries, but he has some serious bruising over most of his body and a few partially healed cuts.” She explained. “He’s concerningly underweight as well, he’ll need to eat more frequently until he puts on some pounds.”
Finn and Jake shared a look, what happened to this guy before he showed up in the Candy Kingdom? Sure Ice King was evil and all but he wouldn’t hurt someone that badly, right? But if it wasn’t Ice King then what could have happened?
“He is awake if you want to see him,” Nurse Pound Cake broke them from their thoughts. “Princess Bubblegum is in his room now, I can take you there if you’d like.”
Finn nodded, “Yes, please take us to him.”
Nurse Pound Cake led them both through the halls of the hospital, Finn was almost surprised to walk past the main rooms with multiple beds. They must have put the man somewhere with a bit more privacy.
Eventually they arrived at the room, Nurse Pound Cake knocking at the door before opening it to let Finn and Jake in. When they entered, they saw the man sitting propped up on the bed with Princess Bubblegum sitting by his bedside.
The man’s head injury had been bandaged and was he wearing one of the hospital gowns, the garments with rather short sleeves. Without the long sleeves of the man’s jacket blocking the view, Finn could see the yellow and purple bruising littering his arms, though that wasn't all that was there. Multiple scars were visible as well, from the largest visible that wrapped around the outside of his forearm to several smaller nicks around his hands.
Both him and Princess Bubblegum turned to face them when the door was opened, Princess Bubblegum smiling at them, “Good morning you two, did you sleep well?”
“I did, this one however,” Jake pointed at Finn, “Was too excited to get all that much sleep.”
Finn laughed sheepishly, “Yeah, well, uh,” he turned to the man. “How are you feeling this morning?”
“Better than last night,” The man answered, smiling. “Not great, but I’ll be fine.”
“If you’re in any pain I can have someone bring you some pain killers,” Princess Bubblegum offered, but the man shook his head.
“No no. Thank you but I’ll be alright.”
“How about your memory?” Finn asks, hoping he could tell him something, anything really about other humans. “Do you remember anything?”
Finn frowned when the man once again shook his head, “No, it’s still a blank on anything that happened before yesterday.”
“So I guess that's a no on the name situation as well,” Jake said.
“Actually, we do have a temporary name worked out,” Princess Bubblegum cut in. “Until he remembers his real name, we decided ‘Milo’ would be suitable for the short term.”
“‘Milo’ huh? I’d say it suits you.”
“Well, it’ll work for now,” ‘Milo’ said, looking away. “It doesn’t feel quite right, I just hope I’ll be able to remember my real name at some point…”
Princess Bubblegum placed a hand over his, which caused him to jump, “I’m sure you will, Dr Ice Cream said you were doing pretty well all things considered and in terms of your memory, things looked pretty good.”
Milo managed a half smile at her words.
“Speaking of memory, could you give us any more deets on what you do remember?” Finn asked. “Like what’s the earliest thing you can recall?”
“The earliest thing I can recall…” he repeated, considering the words. “The first thing was waking up in a room made of ice…”
“Were you in a cell?” Jake interrupted.
Milo shook his head, “No, but now that I think about it, there was a cell in that room. It was inside this strange Ice mountain, the entrance almost looked like a face with the door, or rather lack of a door being the ‘mouth’.”
“Sounds like the Ice Castle,” Finn said. “Did you see Ice King? Did he jack you up?”
His face shifted, just for a fraction of a second, to something unreadable, before flicking back to confusion, “...Who is Ice King?”
“He’s the ruler of the Ice Kingdom and a serial kidnapper of Princesses,” Princess Bubblegum answered.
“Sound’s dreadful.”
Finn nodded, “Yeah, but did you scope him?”
“I don’t believe so,” Milo said. “The only ‘people’ I ran into in the Ice Kingdom were penguins and this one snow golem that gave me a pear.”
“Well if you were in the Ice Castle then Ice King must have something to do with it,” Jake punched into his open hand. “I say we go over there and serve him fist cookies until he tells us what he did to Milo.”
Milo’s brow creased, “Are you sure that’s safe?”
“It's fine, we flip his bricks all the time,” Jake waved him off.
“I agree that it would be good to investigate that further,” Princess Bubblegum said. “As of now it's our only lead.”
“Alright…” Milo conceded, but he still looked worried.
“Hey, you could come with us!” Finn offered. “Maybe something in the ice castle could jog your memory, or you could get an explanation straight from Ice King.”
Finn hoped he would say yes, if so he’d get to go on an adventure with another human! He could show off his ham kicking skills. Though more than anything, he just wanted to spend time with someone who was human like him. He waited with bated breath as Milo considered the offer.
“Well I’d need to check with Dr Ice Cream, but I would like to come along,” He responded, sitting up. He tenderly pressed the bandage over his injury. “I would like to figure out what’s going on.”
Finn grinned, “Math! I’ll go get Dr Ice Cream!” He ran out of the room with Jake close behind, Princess Bubblegum chuckling at his antics.
Milo seemed confused for a moment, “…Math?”
It didn’t take long for Finn to find and drag Dr Ice Cream back to Milo’s room. Dr Ice Cream checked him over and changed his bandages before giving him the all clear, though warned him to be careful, not to overexert himself and to get a lot of rest for the foreseeable future.
Milo quickly changed into the clothes he’d been found in, except for the jacket which was still getting the blood cleaned out. Princess Bubblegum had lent him one of her coats for their journey into the cold of the Ice Kingdom, a long pink one that came down to his knees. He made sure to thank her before he left with Finn and Jake, heading towards the Ice Kingdom.
Jake had once again grown giant to make their trip shorter, which Milo seemed both curious and off put by. He sat behind Finn on Jake’s back, looking out over the scenery as Finn wondered just what he should say to him.
What he wanted to do was ask so many questions, for Milo to tell him where he came from or if there were any other humans. But with his amnesia he was just as much in the dark as Finn was. Even so, Finn was happy to have someone who was human like him around.
“Do you uh, recognise anything around here?” He ended up blurting out.
“Not really,” Came Milo’s reply. “I think I can see a few things I saw when I left the Ice Castle, but it's hard to tell from this angle.”
“I can go lower if that’ll help,” Jake turned his head back to see them and Finn thought he saw Milo jump as Jake’s neck turned farther than any non-stretchy creature could.
“No thank you, there’d be no point anyway,” Milo returned his gaze to the scenery. “I didn’t know where I was or where I was going, I was just looking…”
“Looking for what?” Finn asked.
Milo was silent for a moment, “I’m not really sure. I think I was looking for something, or maybe someone? To be completely honest, I don’t remember a lot of yesterday either, probably on account of the blood loss.”
“What about this morning then, what were you and PB talking about?” Finn paused for a moment before adding. “If you don’t mind sharing that biz.”
“We were only talking for a few minutes before you two came in,” He said. “After interrogating me about what I remembered, we had begun to discuss where I’d be staying. She mentioned a few hotels and a spare room in the castle.”
“So where are you staying?”
“Well, we didn’t come to a decision, you two appeared before I could choose,” Milo shrugged. “I suppose we’ll figure it out after we get answers from Ice King.”
Finn thought for a moment, he had an idea, “You could stay at me and Jake’s treehouse?”
“What?” Milo and Jake said simultaneously.
“Dude,” Jake whisper-yelled. “I did not agree to this.”
“Come on Jake, he’s like, my people."
“But we don’t know him,” Jake insisted.
“That’s why he should stay at the treehouse, there’d be more time to get to know him!”
“I don’t know…”
Finn huffed, he didn’t think it would come to this but desperate times called for desperate measures. He took a deep breath, then activated the best sad puppy eyes he could muster.
Jake stared back at him, staying strong but Finn could tell it wouldn’t last. His defences were crumbling before the puppy eyes and it wasn’t long before he sighed and turned back to face the approaching Ice Castle.
“Okay, you and your stinking puppy eyes win man.”
“Algebraic!” Finn cheered, but his celebrations were cut short by Milo clearing his throat.
Finn looked back to face Milo as he spoke, “About your offer, are you sure? I wouldn’t want to intrude…”
“Of course I’m sure!” Finn quickly assured. “We have plenty of room at the treehouse, if we set up a divider and one of the couches you can have your own area too. Jake, also, is fine with it.”
“Yeah yeah, it's no bee bites, we can put something together after we deal with the Ice King,” Jake added.
“And your parents? Would they be alright with it?”
Finn paused, awkwardly rubbing the back of his head, “Well, uh, our parents are dead. It’s just me and Jake living at the treehouse. Oh, and Bmo.”
Milo’s brow creased, “Sorry, it’s just the two of you? And this Bmo person?”
Nodding, Finn answered, “Pretty much yeah, it’s been just us for a while. So, what do you say? Wanna stay with us at the treehouse?”
Milo thought for a moment, then nodded with a smile, “I think I’ll take you up on that offer, thanks.”
Finn smiled back, “Math, after this we can-”
“We’re coming up on the ice castle,” Jake said, starting to shrink and dropping his passengers onto the icy pathway.
