They had made it. Well, three of them did. Steph figured that would have to be good enough. But it was getting colder. Steph wrapped her sweater closer around herself. Listened to her aunt as she moved into the spare room. Became Pete’s new partner in science. Listened as he talked about thermodynamics and suggested he teach her how the bunsen burners work by roasting marshmallows over them when he kept glancing at Richie’s empty chair too much. Avoided the play and wished it could just be warm again. How could something hurt without a scar to show for it?
