Chapter Text
Daichi burst through the door bringing a waft of cold air back into the house with him. He fucked up. He’d made an assumption, and he was wrong. After over a year’s worth of pining and holding back, he had let himself do something so stupid it probably cost him Suga’s friendship.
He kicked off his shoes at the door and stuffed his jacket back in the closet. Hiroka was sitting on the couch but before she could open her mouth to say something Daichi was storming down the hall to his bedroom. He wanted to slam the door behind him but knowing his youngest sister was likely already in bed, he shut it gently. All Daichi could do was sit on his bed with his head in his hands and try to quell the tears welling in his eyes.
It was stupid to think that Suga felt anything more than friendship towards him and selfish to try to act on that without confirmation. The whole situation was so fucking embarrassing. Suga had come over to comfort him after he had chickened out of coming out to his family and rather than thanking Suga for being such a good friend, he'd come on to him.
Daichi stood up and began to change into his pajamas, homework be damned there was no way he was getting anything done after what had just happened. As he pulled on his sleeping shirt, he heard a careful knock at the door. Tentatively he pulled it open and found Hiroka on the other side.
“Hey,” she said, “I took out the garbage, so you don’t have to”
“Thanks” Daichi muttered. He began to close the door, but Hiroka’s hand stopped it.
"So, you and Suga huh?”
Daichi huffed and turned to sit on his bed, allowing Hiroka to stand in the doorway.
“No, he doesn’t feel the same way”
“That’s not what it looked like to me” she said, closing the door behind her and joining Daichi on the bed.
“Yeah, well you didn’t see what happened after you went back inside” Daichi turned to face his sister, “He just got up and left, he said he should go and then basically ran away”
“I mean that doesn’t necessarily mean-”
“I’ve liked him for so long Hiroka!” he interrupted, “I’ve liked him since basically the day I met him. That was a year and a half ago. After a year and a half of pining over him and not doing anything about it, I fucked it all up by trying to kiss him out of nowhere.”
Speaking this candidly with his sister was something Daichi had never done before. She was only a year younger than him and pretty cool for as far as 15 year old girls went. Out of all his siblings Hiroka was the one he was closest with. Despite that, they rarely discussed crushes or feelings. Frankly, Daichi didn’t have much to share before then regarding his love life. He’d never dated anyone before, and crushes never occupied much of his mind until he met Suga. Hiroka had dated a boy in her class back in junior high but that was short lived, and she didn’t share much about him with the family.
“If I had to bet,” began Hiroka, “I don’t think you fucked it all up.”
“What do you mean? Of course I did.”
“I’m just saying, he was leaning in too.”
When Daichi recalled the moment, that was the one thing that made him think he might not have been crazy for trying. When he’d said Suga’s name, his friend had answered “yes”. When their faces were so close, they almost touched, Daichi hadn’t leaned too far to get there.
“Do you think so?” he asked.
“That’s what it looked like to me. I don’t know why Suga left so quick but honestly, I though you guys were going to start making out the moment I closed the door” Hiroka chuckled.
“If only,” Daichi sighed.
“Ew” she cringed making Daichi laugh, “At least try to talk to him about it tomorrow, or ask Asahi or something, he knows Suga better than I do.”
Daichi swung his arm around Hiroka’s shoulders and pulled her in for a side hug.
“You know, you give pretty good advice for a kid”
Hiroka pushed him away from her scoffing, “I’m literally one year younger than you”
“You’ll always be my little sis!” he smiled.
“So, when were you going to tell me you’re gay?”
Daichi had wondered when she was going to bring that up.
“Bisexual, actually...probably,” that garnered a laugh from his sister, “I swear I was literally going to tell you guys today at dinner, but I don’t know, I got nervous and chickened out.”
Hiroka rolled her eyes, “You didn’t have to tell us if not totally sure, Tsuneo and Otoha probably don’t even know what bisexual means. Consider this a soft launch of your gayness, just me.”
It was Daichi’s turn to roll his eyes, “Sure, a soft launch.”
After a few moments of sitting together in silence Hiroka spoke, “So when you and Suga start dating can he be my gay best friend? I’ve always wanted one”
“Oh my god Hiro!” Daichi covered his face with his hands and laughed, “First of all I’m still pretty sure he doesn’t like me back. Second, he’s not just the ‘token gay guy’ he has other personality traits. Third, rude, I’m literally right here, why am I not your gay best friend?”
“You’re my brother, we’re not friends” she replied, side eyeing him.
“Get out of my room,” Daichi deadpanned.
Hiroka stood up and laughed, “Okayyyy, don’t forget to credit me at your wedding when people ask how you got together”
“Out! Now!”
They both descended into a fit of giggling as Hiroka left and closed the door behind her. Daichi continued getting ready for bed mulling over what his sister had said. As he laid in bed willing himself to fall asleep, he was filled with a mixture of hope and fear for how the next morning would go. He decided he would talk to Suga about it on their bus ride to school, putting it off any longer would probably only make things awkward. While he wanted to believe what Hiroka had said about Suga leaning in too, he found himself recalling the urgency in Suga’s voice and how quickly he had left. There was only one way he would find out what Suga had been feeling when he peddled away. Daichi would have to partake in the most nerve-wracking conversation of his life so far and he was absolutely terrified.
