Chapter 1: The beginning

Chapter Text

“Breathe… just breathe” You couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit of anxiety bottle up inside your mind.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We are preparing for our descent and will be landing shortly. Please fasten your seatbelts, return your seats to an upright position and stow away any tray tables or personal belongs. Thank you for flying with us and we hope you have had a pleasant flight. Captain out !!” The captain of the plane you were in just informed everyone about the landing that could be happening at any moment now.

The destination you were headed was no other than New York City, why ? Well you finally had gotten the job you always wanted, working at city hall as a reporter. The only issue was you needed to move across the states with a plane. It was hard enough to get the courage to go by yourself.

But, you’re an adult. You can handle this right? Wrong, you were hyperventilating, you told yourself you just had to breathe in and out but it seems the lady besides you took notice of your unease. It was an elderly woman, guessing around her 60’s - 70’s. With a warm smile she reaches out and gently places a reassuring hand onto your arm. “It’s going to be alright, if you want, you could hold onto me till we land” Her calming and soft voice made you at ease just a little. Deciding to trust her and hold onto her hand while the landing took place. You could slowly feel yourself calm down. As the wheels touch the runway, there's a slight jolt, and the plane glides smoothly along the tarmac. With each passing moment, the speed decreases, and you can feel the aircraft gently slowing down. As the plane taxis to the gate, you hear the sound of the engines gradually fade away.

The passengers start unbuckling their seat belts, retrieving their belongings from the overhead compartments. You tilt your head to the elderly lady and released her hand. “Thank you for doing this…” your voice came out more cracked than you thought it would. The elderly lady just gave a warm gentle smile before she headed off herself with her belongings.

A moment or two passed, passengers made their way out of the plane to pick up their luggage. You decide to move as well. Your legs feeling a little shaky when you first stand up. “Hopefully I won’t have to fly in a plane for a long while…” you managed to mutter out. You took your bag and followed the rest out of the big machine.

New York City was and is overwhelming especially for an outsider like yourself. The streets are loud, filled with people chatting the day away, the honking of taxi’s chauffeur’s. A whole new world basically.

You already had most of your stuff send over to your new apartment with help of an old childhood friend. Casey Jones. Last time you saw him in real life you had to be around twelve years old? Had it really been ten whole years since you saw him physically?

The moment you called him and informed him about your move to New York. You knew he lived in New York for a pretty long time. The reason you two still had contact was that your parents had each of their phone numbers even after Casey moved. The two of you would call almost any day when you could. You were inseparable. But the contact slowly faded when high school started. Nonetheless you still had his contact and decided to speak to him a couple weeks before you decided to take the job in New York. He might have been a very big influence on your decision to take the job.

“You know… if you come, I can help you move! You know, get an apartment, move your stuff. Don’t worry! The great Casey Jones can move a few heavy boxes!” He spoke to you on the phone.

”I don’t know, what if I’m not cut out for this job-? I don’t want to fail and be stuck there you know?” You sigh, you had a pen in your free hand playing around with it.

“psssh!! Come on! You’re amazing y/n! But, in seriousness, I mean it about the helping you move part. It would also be awesome to see you again you know? Anyways I gotta hang, I’m going to some friends, don’t wanna be late, let me know what your decision is okay? Byee!!” With that your phone call had ended.

Now here you are, you took the big step to your new future. A scary big one, but any step counts. You approach one of the taxi’s, letting them know your address of your new apartment. The driver nod their head before opening the backseat for you to get in.

As you settle in, you see the city passing through the window. Before you know it you had already arrived at the apartment building. You paid for your ride and the driver helped you with your luggage. “Thank you”. They simply nod their head with a smile before taking off. “Now where’s Casey…” You finally took your phone out of your pocket. It was still on flight mode. You turned it off and received a couple of texts and calls from Casey asking when you would arrive and if your plane landed safely.

You dialled his number which he picked up almost immediately. “ Hey Casey, it’s me, I just arrived at the building. I forgot to turn off flight mode when I landed-“ you didn’t want to remind yourself about your anxiety attack you had at the plane. Nor worry Casey about that. “Sweet! See you in five, wait for me okay? I’ll pick up some pizza to celebrate your move! Oh eh, is it okay if I bring a friend with me? She’s really cool. I want you to meet her!” The excitement of his voice made you giggle. Some things just never seem to change even after becoming an adult. It was nice to have a bit of your childhood in this city all alone. “Sure, I wouldn’t mind making a new friend in this lonely city” you teased a little. But you were honest. Making a new friend couldn’t hurt anyone, your old friends weren’t exactly keepers. Lost contact as soon as you left college. Their loss.

After waiting, what felt like hours, in truth it had been five minutes like Casey said. But the excitement of wanting to see your apartment, not to mention the growling of your stomach praying to be fed, it felt like an eternity. You slightly brush your hair behind your ear, fidgeting around. “I, Casey Jones, have arrived with your dinner and guest” The sound of his voice in real time was even better than hearing him through the phone. He sure didn’t have that high pitched voice anymore. He sounded like a man. You smile and turned around to see him together with a red haired woman besides him. “Hi there! The name is April O’Neil, I heard from Casey you’re hired at central hall to be a reporter! That means we are probably in the same group of reporters. I also work there” She extended her hand and you gladly accepted and shook it.

“No kidding?! That’s so awesome, hey- is this why you wanted me to accept the job and meeting April? The name is Y/N by the way” You gave a questioning look at Casey before returning to look at April. “Maybe- maybe not, who knows! Let’s just get you inside!” Casey nervously laughed. It was obviously a part of his little plan. Two of his close friends meeting and working at the same report office ? You could say it’s simply a coincidence but you knew Casey better than yourself… well at least you thought you did.

“Yes let’s go inside”
