Thinking about you

Summary:

Yeonjun used to merely exist in a world where days would pass by in a blur until Soobin reached out his hand to him and introduced him to a new world full of sparkling, vivid hues.

And at the centre of the colours was Choi Soobin himself, with the unchanging smile that Yeonjun had fallen in love with.

♡♡♡

Or,

Yeonjun pines for his high school crush.

Yeonjun sighs upon seeing the featured account next to the number of likes on his post. He clicks on the bottom right of the screen and switches to his private account, also known as jjunjuns.

Quite inconspicuous, if he does say so himself. Especially with a profile picture of Kuromi. People who aren’t in his close circle won’t ever find out.

Yeonjun refreshes his home page, and his lips curl up into a smile when he sees the familiar username in the top left corner.

“Working hard or hardly working?”

Yeonjun flinches and switches his phone off before placing it face-down on the counter. He looks up at the intruder and frowns, saying, “That’s an old saying.”

Kai ignores him in favour of poking at his phone and asking, “Were you stalking that one guy again? Soo…Soomin? Seungmin? His name isn’t Jumin, is it?” Kai gasps and, with sparkling eyes, continues, “This is a long shot, but is his name Han Jumin?”

“What? Kai, what are you talking about?” Yeonjun replies, pushing Kai’s curious hands away from his phone. “I wasn’t doing anything.”

“Really? ‘Cause it looked like you were scrolling through Insta again. Specifically, that one guy’s account.”

“His name is Soobin.”

“Oh, yeah, that’s right. Soobin. Were you stalking him again?”

“It’s not stalking. I was just rereading his posts and stuff.” To prove his point, Yeonjun reopens the Instagram app and shows Kai the latest post from Soobin. “He’s hilarious. He has on-and-off updates, and they make me laugh every time.”

Kai squints at the screen and slightly wheezes at the story. “Okay, yeah, he’s funny. But you’ve looked at his account three separate times in this past hour. I counted.”

Yeonjun sighs and lays his head against the wooden counter, giving him a full view of the clowder of cats in the glass room, all chilling on the various cat trees and towers their human servants have provided for them. “It’s totally stalking, right?”

“Yup,” Kai replies, popping the consonant sound at the end. “Congratulations, I’m proud of you for admitting that.”

“Man, I don’t know, Kai. I want to reach out, but I have no idea what to talk about.”

“I thought you guys were friends? I mean, you’re following his private Instagram account. On your personal account, too.”

Yeonjun sighs. “We’re friends…but not at the same time.”

“How does that work? That barely makes sense.”

“Well…it’s kind of a long story….”

Kai scans the interior of the cat cafe — the small yet cosy establishment with various wooden tables and chairs scattered across the room, all of which are empty, save for the colourful cushions. “It doesn’t seem we’re going to get any customers soon. And the cats are chilling. Come on! I’m very much invested in your love life.”

Yeonjun runs his hands through his hair and exhales. “We went to the same high school. I didn’t talk much with him, but I knew of him. I always found him interesting because this one time…”

**

For one of Yeonjun’s classes in sophomore year, he was required to make a persuasive multimodal text. This could be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, YouTube video or speech to the class. The only limitation they received was that it had to be under 6 minutes, and the student’s voice must be heard.

Of course, Yeonjun performed exceptionally well, as his teacher was impressed after he debated that social media did more harm than good and listed his points, all backed up by verified sources.

Straight after Yeonjun’s debate, a tall, lanky boy with messy black hair and bunny-shaped lips stood at the front of the class, nervously reviewing his transcript. He constantly adjusted his glasses, and, assuming it was a nervous tick, Yeonjun began to feel sorry for the poor boy. Not only was he incredibly nervous, but he had to live up to Yeonjun’s spectacular presentation.

But the moment his classmate opened his mouth, it was as if a button had been clicked. His entire demeanour changed, and he delivered his speech passionately and enthusiastically. He evidently felt strongly about Sharpay from the High School Musical trilogy and how she had been misunderstood as the villain.

By the end of his speech, the whole class clapped in awe, taken aback by their classmate’s powerful words and surprisingly insightful commentary about the demonisation of feminine qualities in the media.

As much as Yeonjun hated to admit it, he exited the class with an enlightened mind.

**

“That’s…” Kai looks to the side, searching for the proper words. “Interesting. I mean, don’t get me wrong, the portrayal of femininity in media has to be changed, but connecting it to High School Musical? That’s talent.”

Yeonjun snorts. “Tell me about it. After that, I saw him around, but we never got a chance to talk. I always wanted to be his friend, though.” Yeonjun mindlessly plays with his hair as he continues, “And then this happened….”

**

Yeonjun examined the textbook answers before comparing them with his own, smiling in satisfaction when most of his solutions were correct. He stretched his arms over his head, confident in his ability to ace the upcoming test.

As he looked back down at his notebook, he happened to catch a glimpse of the group of students sitting a few tables away. They talked amongst themselves, each with a paper full of maths formulas. Dubbed a cheat sheet by the teachers, students could use one page of paper to write whatever formulas they needed for the test.

Yeonjun turned to the other side of the room and blanched when he found more of his peers analysing the formulas written on their chest sheets.

In fact, the entire class had cheat sheets full of formulas that were covered in class up until that point. Everyone except Yeonjun.

Dread started pooling in Yeonjun’s stomach as he turned to the student sitting at the desk behind him. If Yeonjun remembered correctly, he was one of the smart ones. And, no, that assumption had nothing to do with the thick, black glasses resting on his face — It had more to do with his presentation. Considering his amazing argument in their other shared class, he’s bound to have some brain cells, right?

Besides, Yeonjun is 75 percent sure this guy would respond to him, unlike his other classmates.

Yeonjun tapped the student’s desk to gain his attention, and when he looked up, Yeonjun asked, “When’s the test?”

The black-haired boy’s eyes widened out of their sockets, and he replied, “Oh my god, you’re so fucked. The test is today.”

Yeonjun’s panic metre skyrocketed at the revelation.

“It’s today?! I thought it was tomorrow!” Yeonjun shrilled moderately, conscious of the people around them and the fact that he was in a classroom. He gripped the back of his seat for dear life and asked, “Didn’t Ms Lee say it was tomorrow?!”

“No, the date was changed.”

“I don’t have my cheat sheet!”

“Oh, no.” His classmate covered his mouth with both hands, staring at Yeonjun in absolute terror. Then, his eyes lit up in realisation, and he exclaimed, “Wait, you still have time. Ms Lee is grabbing the calculators! Quick! Here!”

To Yeonjun’s surprise, his classmate ripped out a blank gridded sheet of paper from his notebook and passed it to Yeonjun. Nonetheless, he quickly accepted it and slammed it onto his table. He haphazardly scribbled down the required formulas and notes about certain equations, all the while his heart drummed loudly in his ears. Just as he finished copying down the last formula he needed, Ms Lee entered the classroom with a plastic container filled with calculators.

Yeonjun sighed heavily, allowing his pounding heart to calm down. The test hadn’t even started, but Yeonjun was already out of breath as if he had just run a marathon.

But it could have been worse.

Yeonjun turned in his seat to face his saviour, and swallowing his pride, he said, “Thanks.”

His classmate blinked in surprise, but a smile quickly formed on his face, revealing his dimples. “All good.”

It was as if the smile became an arrow that shot straight into Yeonjun’s heart.

Covering up his shock with a nod, Yeonjun quickly turned around.

It was the first time he was on the receiving end of such a genuine smile.

At the end of the test, as students were racing out of the classroom for lunch, Yeonjun glanced at the classmate who helped him.

From this angle, Yeonjun saw the front of his folder.

Choi Soobin.

**

“Oh, what? Wait, that’s actually so cool. He’s awesome!” Kai comments as he wipes down the counter with a cloth.

“Yeah. And then, in junior year, we were in the same class, and he recognised me. He sat next to me, we started talking and became friends through our shared hatred of our literature class.”

“Aw, wait, that’s adorable. So, you’ve liked him ever since?”

“I wouldn’t say I like him…” Yeonjun’s voice trails off, and he turns his face away, focusing his gaze on the photos of their cats lining the wall.

“Really?” Kai questions, his tone hinting that he already knows the answer.

Yeonjun sighs and lowers his head, almost shameful. “I like him a lot. Really badly. Horribly. It’s debilitating.”

“Ooh, cute, cute! The story is getting more juicy! Tell me, do you know when you realised you liked him?”

Yeonjun’s heart kickstarts. “That’s—”

The melodic bell chimes against the door, signalling the arrival of a customer. Kai immediately shuts himself up and greets the newcomer in his classic customer service voice.

This new face is the very definition of beautiful — his facial features are so soft and pretty, as if they were sculpted by the gods themselves. His chin-length hair is tied into a half-ponytail, with hanging strands to frame his already perfect face. Although he’s wearing a basic oversized shirt and old jeans, it looks so damn good on him. As a fashionista, Yeonjun appreciates this man’s visuals.

The young man scans the cafe in awe, curious eyes darting around. When his eyes land on the glass room full of cats, his lips curl into a grin.

The young man approaches the counter and asks, “Could I play with the cats?”

“Our cat cafe has a rule where you must order at least one item off the menu to play with the cats,” Kai explains.

“Oh, okay. That makes sense. Sorry, it’s my first time in a place like this,” the newcomer admits with a sheepish shrug. His eyes trail up to the menu behind the counter, squinting at available items. “I’ll just get a regular iced mocha, thanks.”

Yeonjun instantly gets to work, letting muscle memory take over as he makes the desired coffee.

At the same time, the newcomer sits at the table near the front of the counter, watching the cats in the other room with sparkling eyes.

“So, what brings you here at Kittyincidence?” Kai asks, leaning against the counter and looking at him curiously.

“Um…this might sound weird, but my boyfriend has a family cat, but he can't see his cat because he lives in a dorm for uni. I know he misses him a lot, so I was hoping I could make him feel better by bringing him to a cat cafe,” the customer explains, fiddling with his fingers. The way his smile softens at the thought of his boyfriend is adorable and makes Yeonjun want to punch the brick wall. “I wanted to check this place out first, just to make sure I knew what we were getting into.”

“Aw, cute! After you finish, I can introduce you to the cats, and you can play with them!”

Yeonjun tops the iced mocha with a generous helping of whipped cream, chocolate drizzle and a dust of cocoa powder. Satisfied, he carefully delivers the order to the customer and watches the newcomer’s reaction as he places the iced mocha on the wooden table.

Yeonjun inwardly cheers when the newcomer’s expression lights up, amazed at the appetising appearance. “Hope you enjoy,” he says with a smile.

“Thank you!” The customer replies as he whips out his phone to snap photos.

As Yeonjun returns to the other side of the counter, Kai nudges him with an elbow and whispers, “If you made a move on Soobin, you could take him out on dates. Be like Mr Iced Mocha over there. Take your boyfie out on cute dates.”

Yeonjun hisses and slaps Kai’s shoulder, replying, “That’s never going to happen. Now shut up and go back to work; there’s a customer.”

Chapter Text

Apparently, the first-time customer is Choi Beomgyu, and he’ll definitely return with more friends.

After Beomgyu’s patronage in the afternoon, the cat cafe didn’t have another customer until around the evening, when businesspeople, families with young children, and stressed students stopped by. They would treat themselves to food and then relax by playing with the cats. Although it was quite challenging at times, his efforts were worth it after seeing the customers’ happy faces.

Soon, the end of his shift rolls around. Once Yeonjun steps out of the cat cafe, he makes a beeline to the nearest train platform, pushing his legs as fast as he can without breaking into a full sprint.

When the station is in sight, Yeonjun deliberately slows down. He ruffles his hair until it looks cool yet effortless, fixes his outfit, and puts on his best nonchalant expression. With a deep breath, he presses onward, maintaining his facade of a calm and composed individual.

However, as soon as Yeonjun sees the black mop of hair under the overhead lights, all coherent thought jumps out of his brain.

And when the black-haired man locks eyes with him and smiles adorably, Yeonjun’s brain short-circuits and shuts down completely.

It’s always that damned dimpled smile.

“Hi, Yeonjun-hyung!” Soobin chirps, waving excitedly.

Yeonjun returns the sentiment with a slight wave of his own. “Hey, Soobin.”

In a panic to actually have a conversation with the younger, Yeonjun resorts to his usual move — clowning Soobin for his posts on Instagram.

“So, I heard you say that it was ‘no good’ when the coffee machine wasn’t working,” Yeonjun starts with a devious grin.

Soobin scrunches his eyebrows in confusion but then remembers about the incident. “Oh my god. I need to learn how to shut up.”

“No, don’t, it’s funny! Your posts are hilarious. They always make me laugh.”

“That’s so sweet of you. But I really need to remember about the concept of a digital footprint. Not all my thoughts should be put on the internet.”

“Hmm, I don’t know. I mean, where else am I going to get my comedy fix?”

Soobin places a hand over his chest in mock astonishment. “You think I’m funny? Okay, that’s it. I’m never shutting up.”

“Perfect.”

Neither of them has anything more to add, resulting in silence. Afraid of an awkward situation, Yeonjun’s brain scrambles to find a new conversation topic when Soobin asks, “How have you been? Last time I saw you, you had a sore throat. Is that better now?”

Inner Yeonjun shrieks and punches the air repeatedly. His heart bursts with affection, his brain can’t focus on anything but the man in front of him, and all he wants to do is hug Soobin tightly and put him in his pocket.

‘To think he remembered that I had a sore throat!’

“It’s better now,” Yeonjun replies, trying his hardest to fight the urge to smile. “I took a bunch of medicine and honey tea.”

“Ooh, yeah, the perfect remedy for sore throats!”

Suddenly, Yeonjun’s brain recalls when Soobin complained about his sore throat on Instagram. He had been doing his best to relieve it until....

“I just remembered the time you went out to karaoke even with a sore throat,” Yeonjun says with a chuckle. “And then you literally could not speak until a few days later.”

Soobin winces and covers his face in embarrassment. “I gotta stop acting like Instagram is my personal diary.” A few seconds pass before Soobin follows up, “Okay, but that was so worth it. I got so many 100s that night. I think I sound better when I’m sick.”

“I mean...maybe. I don’t think there’s much of a difference when singing.”

Soobin makes a noise of disbelief. “Have you ever tried singing when you’re sick?”

“One doesn’t usually sing when they’re sick. They’re usually focused on getting better.”

“You’re missing out. Just because you’re spewing germs everywhere doesn’t mean you should deprive yourself of entertaining things like singing. You should totally have a midnight karaoke session with a fucked up throat. It’s even funnier that way.”

“Sure, I’ll put that on my to-do list.”

The train draws closer, with its engine drowning out their conversation. When it comes to a stop, Yeonjun allows Soobin to go on first. After paying, they find two available seats, with Yeonjun choosing to sit by the window.

“H-how have you been doing lately? Sorry, I forgot to ask,” Yeonjun says, wanting to sock himself for forgetting to check Soobin’s well-being.

“Same old. Going to uni, busting my ass to finish assignments and crying over the shows I watch,” Soobin replies while pouting in thought. “To be honest, I don’t blame you for forgetting. You’re kinda updated on my life, anyways, ‘cause I don’t know how to shut up.”

Although Soobin probably means it as a joke, something about his comment rubs Yeonjun the wrong way.

“That’s not a bad thing. I like seeing your posts.” Yeonjun gathers his courage with a deep breath before continuing, “‘Cause we don’t see each other that often, your posts are how I get updates on you, you know? Every time I go on Instagram, I see one of your posts, and I know that you’re doing well.”

Soobin’s jaw is practically glued to the floor as he stares at Yeonjun, completely stunned. Before the embarrassment and regret can fully settle in his stomach, Soobin goes, “You’re literally the sweetest, oh my god. Thank you~!”

Soobin beams widely, giving Yeonjun another view of his dimples.

If angels came down and told him that his time was up and he needed to be escorted to heaven, Yeonjun would happily oblige. After all, the last thing he had witnessed before meeting his demise was Soobin’s adorable smile.

Actually, it would make much more sense if Soobin sprouted wings and guided Yeonjun to heaven himself. There’s no way a man as ethereal as Soobin is a mortal being.

“By the way, which account should I send stuff to? Your big one or your personal one?” Soobin asks out of the blue, looking at Yeonjun expectantly.

“Oh, y-yeah, personal’s fine,” Yeonjun replies. His heart palpitates at the mere thought of Soobin wanting to reach out and talk with him more.

“That makes sense. You probably have a bunch of messages from fans and scam artists. Understandable, ‘cause you’re good-looking.”

As if the compliment wasn’t enough, Soobin follows up his sentence with, “Get ready for a bunch of random posts, ‘cause I see a bunch of stuff that I think you’ll like.”

Yeonjun grips his thigh to hold himself back from dancing in happiness. Not only does Soobin think he’s good-looking, but the fact that certain memes remind Soobin of Yeonjun? So much so to the point where he wants to send them? Yeonjun can break out into a cartwheel from pure excitement.

Then he realises that this is Soobin he’s thinking of. The same Soobin that once claimed that he would go on a date with the human version of Shrek.

Either way, Yeonjun’s thrilled. This means that he’s often on the younger’s mind! And the person he likes thinks that he’s attractive in some way!

Before Yeonjun can celebrate this, Soobin changes the subject yet again, this time to a former classmate’s breakup. This leads to the two of them spending the rest of the train ride reminiscing about their high school memories while catching up on each other’s lives.

While the other passengers are dull and dreary, with the train ride being a mundane occurrence, Yeonjun’s world bursts with colour thanks to Soobin’s presence alone.

But then the name of the dreaded stop blares over the speakers, and Soobin looks up, watching the name pass by on the board. Soobin shifts forward until he’s at the edge of his seat, and he organises his backpack. “This is me. It was nice talking to you!”

Yeonjun’s throat closes up, and he barely manages to reply with, “Yeah. Good luck with uni.”

“Thanks! Hope things will go well for you, too.” Then, as Soobin stands up, he says, “Keep in touch, okay? Talking to you is fun!”

With the way Yeonjun’s heart gallops wildly in his chest, you would think that he won the lottery or something. But, nope, it’s all because the subject of his affection suggested they stay in contact.

Oh, how utterly whipped he is for Soobin.

Yeonjun leans back on the seat and sighs in both relief and longing. He would've spontaneously combusted if he had to spend even a second more with Soobin. But, at the same time, he wishes that the train ride was a little bit longer.

“He’s the same as ever,” Yeonjun comments, fondness lacing his tone. Nostalgia blooms in his chest as he remembers the odd yet genuine kindness Soobin has never failed to show.

Yeonjun’s thoughts are interrupted by the announcement over the loudspeakers, alerting the passengers of the next stop. A small exhale escapes Yeonjun’s lips as he reaches into his pocket and connects his wireless earbuds to his phone, shuffling a random playlist in his library.

When the train arrives at his stop, Yeonjun exits, along with a middle-aged man. Placing his hands into his pockets, Yeonjun deliberately slows down, ensuring the man is in front of him at all times. Simultaneously, he scans the opposite station and inwardly cheers when he finds no one there.

Unfortunately, his efforts at being as inconspicuous as possible were all for naught, as the man glanced to his right just as Yeonjun approached the train station.

‘Great. He saw me. Now he thinks I’m a weirdo for taking the train back to where I came from,’ Yeonjun laments in his head as he sits on the bench, trying to act nonchalant.

‘Then again, a normal person wouldn’t stay on the train past their stop just to talk to their crush. Especially if they actually don’t need to take the train at all and live close to their workplace.’

The song playing in Yeonjun’s ears transitions into the upbeat intro to SEVENTEEN’s Adore U, and Yeonjun can’t help but let out a small snort at the coincidence. It’s as if someone up there is playing a trick on him by saying, “Let’s play a song that completely sums up your situation! To make it funnier, it’s one of your crush’s favourite artists!”

But, really, how can anyone hate Soobin? He holds such a sincere and caring heart, yet he’s not afraid to take bullshit and stands proud on his two feet. Even though Yeonjun’s status differs from most, Soobin treats him all the same and never uses their friendship to his advantage.

Suddenly, Kai’s question comes to mind.

‘Do you know when you realised you liked him?’

“I think...I was always interested in him. But when I realised I was in love, it was at that moment....”

**

More often than not, Yeonjun found himself overwhelmed by the amount of schoolwork and the assignments that took blood, sweat and tears to complete. It didn’t help that the culture surrounding grades in their high school was incredibly toxic, focusing on rankings rather than any substantial learning. To top it all off, his parents desired the best grades from him. Anything worse than an A resulted in immeasurable disappointment and pain.

There was a particular test where his grade ended up lower than he anticipated. Although he knew he tried his best, he couldn’t help but feel disheartened. As if the effort he poured in didn’t matter.

And so, Yeonjun made an excuse to leave the classroom and ventured to the back of the school, near the fences. Hugging his knees to his chest, he let out his pent-up frustrations by bawling his eyes out.

In the midst of his tears, he noticed a student trying to enter the school grounds by jumping the fence but failing miserably.

The student mentioned above made eye contact with Yeonjun and, upon realising the situation he found himself in, frantically said, “I can explain.”

Usually, Yeonjun roll his eyes and ignore his schoolmate’s antics. But on this particular day, Yeonjun’s frazzled brain decided that the best course of action was to cry even harder.

“Oh, lord, what the fuck,” he heard the other mumble in disbelief. “H-hey, you okay? Wait, that’s a stupid question; of course you’re not. Um....”

Grass crunched underneath the newcomer’s shoes as he approached the fence. “You need any comfort? Advice? Or do you just want someone to rant to? Either way, I’m here if you need...as weird as that seems....”

Great. Not only did someone witness him in an extremely vulnerable moment, but they were unexpectedly sweet about the whole situation. They went the extra mile and asked for Yeonjun’s needs, for fucks’ sake! And he’s a senior! He shouldn’t be acting like this at his age.

All these realisations caused Yeonjun to wail hysterically, his pathetic sobs broken up with hyperventilations.

“Holy fucking shit—um!” Out of the blue, something crinkled at his feet, alerting Yeonjun. In his tears, he deciphered a plastic container holding what looked like triangle kimbap from a convenience store.

Just as Yeonjun processed the plastic container, a whole human being jumped down, landing with a grunt. The mysterious student then sat down at a reasonable distance away. “Hey, uh, oh god, um, f-focus on my voice, okay? Like, no thoughts, head empty. Forget everything and focus on my voice.”

Rendered speechless by the absurd situation and his severe tears, Yeonjun could only nod.

“Good! Okay, um, I...I want you to breathe with me, okay? Can you do that?” When Yeonjun responded with another nod, the stranger guided him through a breathing exercise.

Accepting the situation, Yeonjun inhaled and exhaled at specific intervals until his breathing had somewhat regulated. Although tears continued to roll down his cheeks, they weren’t as frequent as before.

With his vision and mind somewhat clear, Yeonjun realised that the person sitting in front of him was none other than Choi Soobin, watching him with careful eyes.

“Hey, you’re doing great! Proud of you, bro!” Choi grinned. He even pulled up a fist, awaiting a response. Yeonjun blinked owlishly at the fist, and after an awkward five seconds, Choi’s arm lowered. “That’s my bad. Anyways. You want me to stay? Or do you want me to leave?”

Yeonjun opened his mouth to speak, but an odd gurgling sound came out instead. After clearing his throat, Yeonjun replied, “You can do whatever you want.”

“Oh...okay.”

Instead of leaving, as Yeonjun expected, Choi reached into the container and pulled out the kimbap.

“Oh my gosh, it’s so good,” he mumbled under his breath. He continued to take massive bites, broken up with a sip of some strawberry flavoured sweet drink.

Bewildered, Yeonjun couldn’t help but question, “Why are you still here?”

“‘Cause I wanna be. I’m staying until you feel better or you want me gone.”

“But...why?”

Choi stopped chewing. He furrowed his eyebrows and tilted his head, becoming the definition of confused.

“Why are you staying with me?” Yeonjun clarified.

“‘Cause I’m waiting for you to feel better. It’s that simple.”

No further words were exchanged between them, with the only sounds being the slight wind, Choi’s chewing and Yeonjun’s occasional sniffles.

But Choi’s silence spoke volumes.

When the bell rang for home time, a slight weight was lifted from Yeonjun’s heart. Albeit embarrassed, Yeonjun looked at Choi and said, “Thanks. You didn’t have to do that.”

“All good. I wanted to help, anyway,” Choi replied with a shrug. Then, he seemed to hesitate to continue, but after psyching himself up, he said, “Might not seem like much, but I’m rooting for you. Fighting!”

Within Yeonjun’s heart, an unfamiliar yet welcome feeling was planted. Back then, he was completely unaware of how that seedling would continue to grow, thanks to Soobin’s cheerfulness and warmth. In the blink of an eye, it had transformed into a beautiful love, vibrant blossoms colouring every crevice of his heart.

Yeonjun used to merely exist in a world where days would pass by in a blur until Soobin reached his hand to him and introduced him to a new world full of sparkling, vivid hues.

And at the centre of the colours was Choi Soobin himself, with the unchanging smile that Yeonjun had fallen in love with.

A high-pitched dolphin shrill erupts from behind the bathroom doors, and Yeonjun harshly flinches at the sudden sound. The door rattles wildly until Kai remembers the intricate mechanisms of a door lock. Heavy footsteps slam across the wooden floorboards as Kai rushes out of the bathroom, swatting his hands wildly. “There’s a bee!”

“There’s a bee?” Yeonjun replies in the same tone as the iconic vine.

Despite the amazing joke, Kai narrows his eyes and goes, “This is fucking serious, hyung; my life is on the line.” He opens his mouth to say more, but his words are replaced with a horrified scream as the bee, as mentioned earlier, flies through the establishment, searching for an exit. It buzzes around frantically, garnering another shriek from Kai and an eye roll from Yeonjun.

Yeonjun equips himself with the laminated cafe menu and a small glass cup to assist the poor bee. Keeping his ears peeled and eyes on the winged insect, Yeonjun waits until the buzzing ceases and then traps the bee using the glass cup.

Yeonjun slides the laminated menu under the bee and then leads it outside through the front door.

The bee peacefully returns to its hive, reunites with its friends, and continues to make honey for the rest of its life. All the while being eternally grateful for that one good-looking human for saving its life.

Except, that’s not what happened at all.

The moment Yeonjun opens the door, there just so happens to be a customer.

A poor customer that has now become the new victim of the bee’s wrath.

And, of course, the customer reacts in a way that’s expected of a human when they are suddenly met with a threatening, chunky, fuzzy bee with an equally terrifying buzz.

“What is that?! Oh my god, it’s so ugly?!”

At the same time, Yeonjun exclaims in surprise and steps backwards, eyes popping out of his sockets from the unexpected appearance.

The customer starts wildly flailing their arms around, as one does when a terrifying bee is within their vicinity. However, this particular action further threatens the bee, driving it to inject its stinger into the poor individual’s hand.

“Ack! What the—?!”

The customer immediately swipes the bee away from his hand, allowing Yeonjun a perfect view of his face.

Oh no.

Accidentally causing harm to a customer was terrible enough. But the fact that he indirectly hurt the subject of his affections?

Jail time.

No, even jail time is not enough. He needs to fully repent by living in a small white room infested with creepy crawlies for the rest of his life.

“Oh my god, Soobin?! I’m so sorry I didn’t see you there!” Yeonjun exclaims, stepping closer to Soobin. His heart aches to reach out and check if Soobin is okay, but both of his hands are holding the stupid items that assisted the bee in making this horrible blunder.

“Yeonjun-hyung? I didn’t know you worked here!” Soobin beams as if he wasn’t just stung by a bee.

A bee that Yeonjun launched at him.

“Come inside! You can wash your hands there.”

Entering the cafe, Yeonjun places the menu and cup on the nearest table to the door. Then, without a second thought, Yeonjun reaches out to the affected hand and delicately turns it, searching for the stinger.

“Y-Yeonjun-hyung, I’m fine. I don’t think you have to go so far as to—”

Yeonjun fervently shakes his head. “Let me do this for you. It’s my fault you got stung.”

Upon finding the stinger, Yeonjun carefully scrapes it off with his fingernail and sighs in relief. “Alright. I think I got it. Make sure you wash your hands with warm water and soap, okay? The bathroom is over there.”

Soobin’s eyes follow Yeonjun’s arm to the bathroom, and he nods in understanding. “Okay. Thanks.”

Once the bathroom door closes, Yeonjun sighs and replays the past events in his head.

He threw a bee at Soobin. Said bee stung Soobin. He helped Soobin by removing the stinger. Now, Soobin is inside the bathroom of the establishment where Yeonjun works.

‘Oh my god, Soobin is actually here, this is real, I’m not prepared at all—’

“Of course, this would happen to Soobin,” a familiar voice murmurs teasingly.

Yeonjun blinks, belatedly realising that Soobin’s friends are accompanying him. Curious, he glances towards the door and finds Beomgyu alongside another handsome young man. The newcomer has large, sparkling eyes, a perfect nose and plump lips. Not only is he handsome, but his sense of style is impressive — a dark green jumper tucked onto navy blue jeans, accessorised with a watch and a black bucket hat? Impeccable.

Great, now Yeonjun can’t help but feel a little self-conscious. Why are Soobin’s friends so hot?

Actually, it makes sense. Birds of a feather flock together, after all.

A tap on Yeonjun’s shoulder brings him back to reality. Turning to the side, he finds Kai leaning over the counter. With his hand cupping his mouth, Kai whispers, “What was that all about?”

“That bee from earlier stung Soobin.” Yeonjun realises his mistake too late and internally smacks his forehead when Kai’s eyes light up with a mischievous glint.

“Soobin?” Kai parrots, his devilish grin widening.

Speak of the angel, and he shall emerge from the bathroom with a lighthearted smile despite being stung by a bee moments before.

“You okay?” Beomgyu asks as Soobin approaches.

“Should be fine. That was kinda funny, to be honest,” Soobin replies, snorting at the end of his sentence.

Taking a deep breath, Yeonjun interjects the conversation with a sincere, “I’m so sorry, I didn’t notice you.”

“It’s fine, really! Don’t worry about it.” Then, Soobin’s eyes trail from the top of Yeonjun’s head to his shoes, causing the older man’s cheeks to heat up from the attention. “I had no idea you worked here. I mean, I knew you worked at a cafe, but not this one specifically.”

“I-I guess it never really came up when we talked,” Yeonjun shrugs, fixing his gaze on the houseplant to avoid looking at Soobin, lest his face become a literal tomato.

“You two know each other?” Beomgyu asks, switching his gaze between Yeonjun and Soobin.

“Yeah, we went to the same high school. Yeonjun-hyung’s literally the reason why I passed my literature class. His notes were so good, and he always made me laugh.”

Yeonjun schools his expression, trying his hardest to remain nonchalant. “You’re exaggerating.”

“That means I only have one introduction to do,” Beomgyu chirps. He gestures to the man in the green jumper and continues, “This is Taehyun, my boyfriend!”

“Ah, so you’re the infamous boyfriend?” Kai comments with a cheeky smile.

Taehyun makes a noise of confusion while Beomgyu chuckles nervously.

“Beomgyu came here a few days ago to check out the place,” Kai elaborates. “Said he wanted to bring you here to make you feel better.”

“Really?” Taehyun turns to Beomgyu, his eyes dripping with affection. “Thank you.”

Beomgyu flushes and nervously rambles, “Y-yeah, no worries. Come on, let’s order something so we can play with the cats!”

Around an hour later, Beomgyu excitedly leads Taehyun to the glass room, where the cats await. At the same time, Soobin brings his drink to the counter. “Yeonjun-hyung!” he calls, waving said person over.

Kai smirks and pats Yeonjun on the shoulder for some odd reason before gently pushing him towards Soobin. Exhaling, Yeonjun approaches the younger, his heart rate skyrocketing from the nerves and excitement.

“You’re not playing with the cats?” Yeonjun asks as he glances at the glass door. Beomgyu and Taehyun are inside, shaking cat toys and recording the adorable interactions.

Soobin leans his head on his hand and watches his friends with a fond smile. Then, he shakes his head and explains, “Nah. I’ll let them spend some time together as a couple. They haven’t got time to do that lately.” Then he looks to Yeonjun and continues, “Plus, I can talk with you. It’s a win-win!”

Kai, who is wiping down the tables, opens his mouth in excitement after hearing Soobin’s statement. His face then morphs into a smug smile, awaiting the development of the conversation.

At the same time, Yeonjun clears his throat to cover up his flustered state. Recovering quickly, he responds, “Glad you see it that way.”

“So, is it usually busy here?”

“It really depends. At this time, we barely get customers ‘cause they’re either at work or school. But around the evening, it gets super busy. A lot of people like coming here to de-stress.”

“Ah, yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Understandable, really.” Soobin sips his drink, and when he finishes, he asks, “What do you do when there’s no one here?”

“Kai and I either check on the cats, or we just vibe and listen to music. We also clean and check on the storage.”

Soobin hums, tapping his fingers against his cheek. Then he smiles and says, “Okay! I’ll visit you after class.”

Yeonjun’s knees buckle from Soobin’s statement, and he grips the counter for dear life. “I’m sorry?”

“I’ll visit you after class,” Soobin repeats more defiantly. “I usually go to the library, but that’s boring. And the atmosphere here’s nice. It’s close to my uni, too. So I can visit you and keep you company while I do my uni work!”

Yeonjun stammers, and his face flushes horribly. Unable to formulate a coherent response, Yeonjun defaults to clowning Soobin by saying, “Soobin, you barely do your work as it is. I don’t think coming here would help.”

‘Good job, Choi Yeonjun! Instead of showing delight at the prospect of the subject of your affections visiting you during work hours, you discourage him by making fun of him?!’

Kai purses his lips together and looks up at the ceiling, holding back his laughter. An appropriate yet unwanted reaction that only strengthens Yeonjun’s desire to smack his face against the wall.

Thankfully, Soobin takes it all in stride and playfully replies, “Shh, I do my work sometimes! Like, when I’m under extreme pressure or want to get away from a social situation…Anyway, I’ll come here after my classes. I’ll drag Tyun and Gyu with me, too. Then, after your shift, we can go home together!”

Kai covers his wheeze with an atrociously exaggerated fake cough. When Soobin turns around in concern, he plasters a fake polite smile and says, “Sorry, my allergies are acting up. It’s always so bad at this time of year.”

“Oh, that sucks. Make sure to take medicine for it,” Soobin comments with a pout. After Kai replies with a smile and an ‘okay’ hand sign, Soobin turns back in his chair and seamlessly continues their earlier conversation. “Get ready, ‘cause you’re going to see me a lot from now on.”

An arrow of love pierces through Yeonjun’s heart, and he genuinely has to take a few deep breaths just to recover from the attack. “Sure. Looking forward to it,” he replies as nonchalantly as possible.

To draw attention away from his reddening face, Yeonjun starts wiping down the coffeemaker with a cloth. However, his strategy may have worked a little too well, for Soobin’s eyes trail down to his hands, and he straight-up goes, “Oh, yeah, you’re really good at making coffee! Well, I know that it doesn’t really matter ‘cause it’s one of those things that always taste good, but the way you make it is just really good.”

Holy fucking shit, Yeonjun’s heart is on the verge of bursting into pieces of confetti.

Kai is having a field day with Soobin’s unexpected visit, grinning from ear to ear after witnessing Yeonjun’s panicked ass and Soobin’s chaotic mind.

Thankfully, his saving grace comes in the form of two customers. A father and his daughter, both equally excited to play with the cats. Noticing two new customers, Yeonjun shifts his focus to them and politely greets them.

As Yeonjun takes their orders, he notices the glass door opening from the corner of his eye, with Taehyun and Beomgyu exiting.

Once the father and daughter find their seats, Soobin gains Yeonjun’s attention by stretching his arms and stating, “Alright, I guess it’s time I go home.” He ruffles his bangs with his hand, allowing Yeonjun full view of the bee sting.

“Wait. Before you go….” Yeonjun quickly retrieves a small plastic cup and pours a handful of ice inside before passing it to Soobin. “For the bee sting.”

Soobin gasps happily and carefully accepts the poorly made treatment as if it were a one-of-a-kind, delicate antique recently discovered by scientists. “Thank you so much!”

“D-don’t mention it. I hope it gets better,” Yeonjun replies, internally berating himself for the lame response.

“It was nice seeing you at work, for once. See you soon!” Soobin eagerly waves goodbye with a wide smile, and it takes Yeonjun an embarrassingly high amount of brain cells just to wave back.

As soon as the door to the cafe closes, the tension escapes Yeonjun’s body with a relieved sigh, and he finally allows himself to relax.

“Oh. My. God,” Kai states with a shit-eating grin. “That was hilarious. So many questions were answered when I watched you two.”

Yeonjun cringes and covers his face with both hands, wallowing in embarrassment. “I made a fool of myself, didn’t I?”

“Yup. But don’t worry; I doubt Soobin noticed.” Kai snickers to himself before continuing, “I mean this in the nicest way possible, but he’s oblivious as hell, and you’re deep in the friend zone. No wonder there’s barely any development.”

Kai’s observations become a sword of reality and stab Yeonjun straight through his heart. “No need to rub it in….”

“Oh, my bad. Think of it this way. During his visits, you can show that you’re more than a bumbling idiot. You can show that you’re boyfriend material and seduce him!”

With every word that falls out of Kai’s lips, Yeonjun sinks deeper into mortification. “N— Wha— Why would you even phrase it like that?!”

“But I’m right, aren’t I?”

Yeonjun sighs. As much as he hates to admit it, Kai has a point. And so, with newfound determination burning in his chest, Yeonjun uncovers his face and declares, “Alright. I’ll try making a move.”

“That’s my man! Now that we’ve got that out of the way, could you get started on the ice chocolate?”

Later that day, when Yeonjun is free to check his phone, he refreshes his home page on Instagram and is met with this gem.

Chapter Text

From that day onwards, Soobin made a personal goal to visit Kittyincidence at least once a week, either with his friends or by himself.

And with each subsequent visit, Yeonjun finds himself losing more of his sanity, lifespan and dignity. A hefty yet worthwhile price he’s willing to pay to spend more time with Soobin and find out about his interests.

Not only that but thanks to their constant interactions, Yeonjun has finally gathered enough courage to comment on Soobin’s posts on his private Instagram account, which led to a new realm of possible interactions.

soobiedoobiedoo

@kthyunism wow that wasn’t funny at all

Yeonjun sighs and places his phone face-down on the counter. It’s been two weeks since he last saw Soobin, and as corny and stupid as it sounds, he greatly misses Soobin’s presence.

Alas, that’s life.

“You’re so dramatic,” Kai scoffs with a roll of his eyes. “At least you can text him now, right?”

Yeonjun clears his throat, avoiding the question.

Kai groans. “Seriously? I thought you guys were talking more.”

“We are! Mostly just…in the comment section of Soobin’s posts…and he would sometimes send me funny posts.”

“Okay? Do you reply to them?”

Yeonjun looks down, hesitating to respond.

“Oh my god.” Kai seems like he’s on the verge of pulling his hair out.

“I have no idea what to say!”

“I don’t know, a ‘haha? LOL? Laughing face emojis? Crying face emojis?’”

“That’s so lame.”

“That’s better than leaving him on seen!”

Yeonjun scoffs. “I’m way above that.” When Kai glares at him, his confidence dissipates, and in a progressively quiet ending voice, he says, “I…like the messages…?”

At this point, Kai is halfway to his grave. In frustration, he places both hands on his head and breathlessly mumbles, “Oh my god, you’re basically telling him to stop messaging you.”

“What?! How?!”

“Because you’re so dry! I thought you were making a move on him. Turns out you’re moving in the wrong direction.”

“What are you even— I’m trying, okay?” Sighing, Yeonjun admits, “I don’t really know what to do…? Like, I know people flirt when they’re interested, but I don’t know how to? And, I think Soobin would be weirded out, too.”

Kai puffs his cheeks. “Okay, true. Hmm…” He even starts rubbing his chin as if he were Sherlock Holmes, not just a regular guy helping his friend with a love predicament.

Amid Kai’s contemplation, Yeonjun’s phone vibrates. The owner turns the mobile device around and taps on the screen to find a post notification from Soobin’s spam account.

“Are you serious,” Kai deadpans.

“Shut up,” Yeonjun weakly replies with a burning face. Nonetheless, he checks the post.

soobiedoobiedoo my day is not aju nice at all 😭😭 i woke up w/ a stomachache and barely managed to keep my food down and then i ordered strawbmelon juice but forgot my phone at my desk so i went to grab it but the barista didn’t hear me and gave it to some high schooler doing their uni visit for free

soobiedoobiedoo

i hope that high schooler enjoys the strawbmelon juice bc its great but damn i’m just having a rough time n sobbing in the bathroom

“Oh, no,” Yeonjun mumbles. A sense of unease creeps into his chest at the mere thought of an upset Soobin. Although Yeonjun doesn’t doubt that Soobin is a pretty crier, he would rather see the younger smiling.

Over Yeonjun’s shoulder, Kai scrutinises the small text on the screen. “Oh my god, this is perfect!” He chirps out of the blue, eliciting a raised eyebrow from Yeonjun. “I have an idea: you can make the juice here and give it to him when his class ends!”

“Wh— isn’t that a little too far?” Yeonjun questions as his face becomes progressively redder.

“Trust me, bro. Soobin would absolutely love it if you visited his campus to give him the strawbmelon juice he oh so loves.” Then, with a wiggle of his eyebrows, Kai adds, “It’s a good excuse to see him, too.”

People do often say that acts such as this one are romantic. And it would undoubtedly cheer Soobin up.

“But what about work?” Yeonjun asks. “And why are you encouraging this? You’re my coworker; you shouldn’t tell me to leave work halfway through my shift.”

“Shh, it’s for love! So! Go, go!”

There’s only one problem…. “Where’s his campus?”

“You don’t know where his campus is?!”

“I mean, I know it’s somewhere around here, but not specifically…?”

Kai steps back and takes deep breaths with closed eyes. A little dramatic, but whatever. “Okay. That’s okay. We can work with this.”

Yeonjun slowly shifts his eyes to the phone in his hand. “How?” he wonders, awaiting Kai’s next instruction.

“Text him and ask about how he’s doing. Then, segue the conversation to where his campus is. When he replies, reveal that you have a surprise, but don’t tell him.”

“Isn’t that a little ominous?”

“How else are you supposed to know? And if you don’t mention the surprise, he might leave when you get there. Just trust me on this, okay? Take it from me. Your certified love expert.”

Kai being a self-proclaimed love expert is quite the red flag, especially considering that his only known credential is getting three good endings in Mystic Messenger thus far. Alas, it’s either Kai or Yeonjun’s limited knowledge regarding love.

So, he sends the message.

“Now’s the time to ask him!” Kai shrills.

Hey, where’s your campus again?

bighit uni, west campus

why

“Kai, what should I say? ‘It’s a surprise? A secret? Look forward to it?’” Yeonjun shrills, typing and deleting multiple phrases.

“Hang on, I’m thinking.” Kai taps his hand against the counter for a few seconds before nodding to himself and saying, “Okay.

“Okay. Say, ‘wait and see,’ and add a winky face. That implies you want him to stay back and meet up.”

soopam^^

> soobiedoobiedoo

Wait and see 😉

“I said face, not emoji!”

“What’s the difference?”

“The vibes! Oh my god, you text like a boomer.”

“What’s wrong with the way I text?”

“It’s so basic. How’s Soobin supposed to fall for you when you text like his customer support service guy?”

soopam^^

> soobiedoobiedoo

🤨⁉️

that’s not terrifying at all

jkjk can’t wait

my class ends at 4 so i’ll see u then !!

“Holy shit, it’s happening,” Kai mumbles in amazement.

“Oh, no, this is happening,” Yeonjun realises as dread pools in his stomach.

What was he thinking?! He can’t meet Soobin like this! This is too scary. Oh my god, why did he do this? Who convinced him to do this—

“You’ll be fine, don’t worry!” Kai reassures him with a wave of his hand. “Just be yourself and try flirting a bit.”

“Those two statements do not go together.”

“Well, that’s a skill issue.”

“Kai!”

“Look, man, there’s nothing else I can say than be yourself!”

“I know how to do that! But…not…flirting….”

“Okay, flirting might be a bit too much for you at this point. Let’s start with baby steps.” Kai inhales deeply and places both of his hands on Yeonjun’s shoulders. Staring intensely into the older’s eyes, he continues, “Make eye contact. And physical contact.”

Yeonjun looks between Kai’s left and right eye. “And what would that do?”

“He would pay attention to you. It’s science. People have done research on this. Just trust me, bro.”

♡♡♡

20 minutes before four o’clock, Yeonjun prepares the strawberry and watermelon juice, paying extra mind to the amount of ice, the predicted condensation of the plastic cup, and the amount of paper straws Soobin would need to finish the drink.

As a result of his meticulous efforts, the strawberry and watermelon juice he brews is none like any other. Filled to the brim with Yeonjun’s innocent yet earnest wish to make Soobin feel better, even if it’s just by a little bit.

Now, it’s time for the hard part.

“Alright, you’re going to walk over to Soobin and deliver the strawbmelon juice to him. I’ll hold down the fort until then. See you!” Kai waves him off, vaguely reminding Yeonjun of Little Red Riding Hood’s mother sending her child off.

Yeonjun just prays that his meeting with Soobin will result in a happy ending.

Placing the drink in a plastic bag, Yeonjun begins walking towards Soobin’s campus.

Within the ten-minute travel, Yeonjun cycles through a roller coaster of emotions, including fear, shock, and anxiety.

This horrible mixture of feelings causes his legs to move at an alarming rate, resulting in him arriving at Soobin’s campus three minutes ahead of schedule.

Shit.

Yeonjun tries to be as nonchalant as possible while he stands in front of a random building. To add to his calm and composed persona, he leans against the building, pulls out his phone and opens Instagram to send bouts of panicked messages to Kai.

?? did u get a stroke or smth

“Yeonjun-hyung?” A familiar voice calls, sending a flurry of butterflies through Yeonjun’s stomach. Flinching, Yeonjun immediately pockets his phone and straightens his posture.

Soobin stands in front of him, an easygoing smile etched on his face. Yet, Yeonjun detects a hint of tiredness in his eyes and an abnormal redness dusted on his cheeks.

Overcome with an urge to alleviate Soobin’s negative feelings, Yeonjun wordlessly lifts the plastic bag and passes it in Soobin’s direction.

Albeit confused, Soobin accepts the bag and takes a peek inside. He gasps in delight upon seeing the drink and then looks up at Yeonjun with gratitude swimming in his eyes. “Oh my god? This is for me?”

Yeonjun nods.

“Really? You didn’t have to, oh my god.” Soobin reaches into the bag to retrieve the drink and grins from ear to ear. “You’re so sweet! Thank you so much.”

“It’s no problem. I’m just glad you feel better,” Yeonjun coolly replies with a shrug. A stark contrast to the chaotic beating of his heart.

“I definitely am.” Soobin stabs the straw through the lid and takes a sip of the drink. Even without words, Soobin’s awestruck expression speaks volumes about his feelings about the juice Yeonjun specifically brewed for him. “It’s so good? It’s better than the one at uni. Okay, now I’m glad that the other one was stolen ‘cause this one’s worth the wait.”

From witnessing Soobin’s happiness, Yeonjun sighs in relief. His plan worked!

Then, Kai’s words from earlier pop into Yeonjun’s mind.

Make eye contact. And physical contact.

‘He said to do that but didn’t say how I should do it! Should I just reach out to him? Pat him on the shoulder? Squeeze his cheeks? Poke his dimples? God, I want to poke them so bad. But if I do it, I’ll seem like a creep!’

“Ah! I should probably head to the train,” Soobin notes as he checks the time on his phone.

“O-oh,” Yeonjun replies. His heart sinks in disappointment.

Another missed opportunity.

Why can’t he just go for it? At this point, nothing will change between them. He’s just the same coward he was all those years ago.

Oblivious to Yeonjun’s inner conflict, Soobin says, “I’ll see you soon, okay?”

Then, time slows down as Soobin steps into Yeonjun’s space. With his free hand, he wraps it around Yeonjun’s shoulder and pulls him into a warm embrace. Yeonjun barely registers the sudden display of affection when Soobin breaks away and cheerfully says goodbye as he walks towards the train station.

‘He hugged me. Oh my god, he hugged me.’

Yeonjun does everything in his power to remain upright lest he falls to his knees in public and causes a scene.

At the moment, his progress may be small, but Yeonjun hopes that they will build up. And maybe, just maybe…he’ll be able to reach Soobin’s heart.

‘I hope he’s getting the rest he deserves,’ Yeonjun thinks as he pockets his phone.

Since Yeonjun has a hair appointment later in the day, he intends to shop around for a while. Stretching his neck from side to side, he begins making his way down the outdoor shopping centre, beginning with his go-to fashion stores.

As he browses, a particular hoodie catches his eye. The fluffy material and solid light brown colour remind him of a soft teddy bear begging to be hugged.

Removing the garment from the rack, Yeonjun scrutinises it closely, debating whether this hoodie is a necessary addition to his closet. Not only is it warm, but its neutral colour allows it to be easily paired with his current wardrobe.

“Yeonjun-hyung?”

The only downside is that his closet is already as full as it is. It’s likely that he would wear this jumper once and then leave it in his closet to marinate for three years. And by the time he discovers this jumper in his closet, his style will have probably evolved.

“Yeonjun-hyung.”

But it’s such a nice jumper! It would be a shame not to get it. Plus, it’s twenty percent off.

Is it really worth it, though?

“Yeonjun-hyung!”

Yeonjun flinches at the harsh call, and when he looks at the newcomer, his stomach does a literal somersault when he meets Soobin’s amused eyes.

“Finally,” he says with faux exasperation. “Hi!”

After an embarrassingly long beat of silence, one of Yeonjun's few brain cells finally takes pity on him and helps him respond with, “H-hey.”

“What a coincidence, running into you here. Are you shopping?”

“Y-yeah. I have a hair appointment around three, so I was passing the time by looking at clothes.” Yeonjun subtly checks Soobin’s outfit, noting the black t-shirt and jeans, with a black crossbody bag to complete the look. Even in such a simple outfit, Soobin still looks so damn good; Yeonjun is literally on the verge of tears.

“Hair appointment? Ooh, what are you gonna do?”

“I was thinking of dyeing my hair orange.”

“Orange? Ooh, yeah, you’d pull it off! I see the vision. It’s gonna look so good on you.”

Yeonjun’s cheeks flush at the forceful compliment, and he clears his throat before replying, “Thanks.” Not wanting the conversation to end, Yeonjun follows up with, “How about you? What are you doing here?”

“I’m collecting a CD. My order finally came in, and so I thought I could use this day to rest and do some shopping. Retail therapy, you know?”

“Sounds good.”

The idea of asking Soobin whether he could accompany him suddenly crosses Yeonjun’s mind. And as lovely as that sounds, many cons outweigh the pros. These include the possibility of making a fool out of himself, being a bumbling idiot, and accidentally fucking up so badly to the point where Soobin doesn’t even want to be on the same planet as him, resulting in his return to the heavens.

In spite of his fears…Yeonjun yearns to be closer, both physically and metaphorically.

“Hey, I-I was thinking….” Yeonjun starts. Soobin perks up and pays rapt attention, almost causing Yeonjun to panic and lose track of his words. “C-could I come with you? Only if you’re comfortable with it. I don’t want to intrude on anything. Wait, are you with someone? Sorry, I should’ve—”

Before Yeonjun can ramble and make a fool out of himself even further, Soobin giggles. Like, full-on giggles. Obviously, Yeonjun shuts up after hearing the heavenly sound. “I was just about to ask if you’d want to join me. I’d love for you to come!”

Yeonjun’s brain short-circuits. “Okay, that’s great. Um—”

“Are you gonna buy that?” Soobin brings up, pointing at the hoodie that’s still in Yeonjun’s hands. “I think you’d look good in it. It’s very much your style, hyung.”

The moment that Soobin’s sentence reaches Yeonjun’s ears, his expression shifts to one of determination. “Okay,” he simply replies before marching towards the cashier with his credit card in hand.

Soobin’s lips seem to be permanently stuck in a giddy smile as he pockets his phone and picks up the album from the counter. “I can’t wait to listen to the songs on here! Hearing it on a CD player just hits different, you know?”

“Yeah, for sure,” Yeonjun replies, unable to tear his fond gaze away from Soobin. He barely manages to catch himself when “I’m surprised you still have a CD player, actually.”

“I impulsively bought one. You know—the wall ones that are advertised on Instagram a lot. You know what stress does to people. Worth it, though, ‘cause I can listen to Fallin’ Flower on it!” Soobin hums, scrunching his eyes excitedly at the mere thought of hearing SEVENTEEN’s heavenly Japanese discography on his crisp, high-quality CD player.

As Soobin places the album back in the provided paper bag with the utmost care, Yeonjun’s stomach growls loudly, begging its owner to give it some sustenance.

Soobin looks up at the sound while Yeonjun shrieks internally, wallowing in embarrassment. Why did his bodily functions have to betray him at this moment?

“I didn’t have breakfast,” Yeonjun admits.

“What?! You should take care of yourself more, hyung.” Then, in a quieter voice, Soobin notes, “Well, I didn’t have breakfast either, so I can’t say anything to you.”

“What do you feel like eating? There’s, like, a good chicken place here if you’re into that.”

Soobin pouts in thought, considering his options. “You know what? Sure, let’s go for it.”

As Yeonjun takes the first piece of chicken, he takes a small bite, conscious of the young man sitting across from him. He chews as quietly as possible, covers his mouth with his hand, and wipes his lips with the provided napkins once he swallows the food.

“Woah! This is good!” Soobin exclaims with wide eyes. He quickens his pace, practically devouring his food.

“Glad you think so,” Yeonjun says with an amused chuckle.

While eating, Yeonjun pays close attention to Soobin’s every word, even when he’s going on a tangent on a random topic he has never thought about.

But as Soobin speaks his mind, Yeonjun can’t help but stare at the younger’s face. How is it possible for someone to be so cute yet gorgeous at the same time? Even if Yeonjun were to find all the positive describing words in a dictionary and combine them all to make a cohesive sentence, it would still fail to capture Soobin’s beauty in words accurately.

“Yeonjun-hyung? What, is there something on my face?” Soobin brings up with a pout.

“Hmm? Oh, yeah, uh, over here,” Yeonjun smoothly lies, pointing at the nonexistent stain on Soobin’s cheek.

“Thanks. Glad you say it outright. This one time, Taehyun didn’t say shit, and I was walking around with, like, a green onion stuck to my teeth for three solid hours.”

Yeonjun snorts at both the thought and the delivery of Soobin’s words. Something about the younger’s humour is so top-tier (it could just be that Yeonjun is that whipped).

Out of nowhere, Soobin brings up, “I just remembered when we first hung out to get bubble tea.”

“When I first skipped class?” Yeonjun clarifies.

Soobin nods.

At the mention of the event, it emerges from the crevices of his brain.

**

Yeonjun had never skipped a class until his senior year of high school.

The reason behind this change surrounded Soobin, their shared literature class and bubble tea.

It all started when Yeonjun was at his lockers, collecting the needed books and stationery for their class. As he closed his locker, he sensed a presence in the corner of his eye.

“Yeonjun-hyung~” Soobin whined with a dramatic slouch of the shoulders. “I don’t wanna go to literature.”

“Me neither. But we have to go,” Yeonjun replied.

“Do we, though? I mean, we’re just going through the assignment, right? We can easily do that at home.”

“You have a point, but we can’t leave midway through the school day.”

“Who says we can’t?”

“They’re the rules, Choi.”

“Rules are made to be broken.”

“That’s not even true!”

But Soobin’s pout remained, prompting Yeonjun to sigh and ask, “What should we do, then?”

Soobin’s pout shifted into a smug grin. “I’ve been craving bubble tea for a while,” he started suspiciously.

Yeonjun raised his eyebrow in confusion but allowed Soobin to continue.

“Do you wanna ditch class and get bubble tea with me?”

“Y-you want us to skip?” Yeonjun parroted with disbelieving eyes. “Can’t you get it after school?”

“Would you rather go to literature than get boba?” When Yeonjun struggled to reply, Soobin smirked. “Yeah. Me too.”

“But…I’ve never skipped before.”

For some odd reason, Soobin gasped dramatically as if he were personally offended by Yeonjun’s lack of experience with skipping classes. “Okay, that’s a done deal. You’re coming with me.”

Under Soobin’s guidance, Yeonjun successfully exited the school grounds with his backpack without any faculty members noticing them.

“How often do you skip?” Yeonjun couldn’t help but ask.

“Um…a…a couple of times. Maybe three times a month,” Soobin responded while fixing his gaze to the side.

The two of them made their way to the nearest shopping plaza on foot, and after acquiring their bubble tea, Soobin dragged Yeonjun to a nearby playground, where they messed around on the equipment and talked until it was nearly home time.

“How’s your first time ditching class? Was it everything you hoped it was?” Soobin asked.

“It was an experience,” Yeonjun replied. Soobin’s face fell at the lacklustre response, prompting Yeonjun to continue, “I mean, I never would’ve done it on my own, so…thanks for dragging me with you.”

“Of course! I’m a firm believer that ditching class is a part of the high school experience, so I’m glad you had a good time.”

Yeonjun snorted at the odd belief. Even so, it was so Soobin-like. “You think every high school student should skip at least once?”

“Yup! It’s a part of our youth.”

Yeonjun shook his head while a smile threatened to take over his face. “You’re so weird,” he said. His voice bled with a fondness he didn’t realise was love.

**

“I was a pretty bad student, huh?” Soobin recalls with a lighthearted grin. “Maybe the reason why I was failing literature was ‘cause I kept skipping class.”

“To be fair, that class was ridiculously hard. I was struggling, too.” In a softer voice, Yeonjun admits, “I had a lot of fun that day.”

Soobin blinks, and his expression becomes clouded with curiosity. “Even though you got in trouble with your parents afterwards?”

“It sucked at the time, but now, I’d say it was worth it. It gave me something fun to look back on. You were right about every high school student needing to ditch class at least once.”

“Hehe, glad to hear it!”

A rush of gratefulness rushes through Yeonjun as he stares at the man in front of him. It was thanks to Soobin that Yeonjun finally built up the courage and admitted to his parents that he didn’t want to follow the path they expected him to. Instead, he wanted to pursue dance, which had always been his lifelong passion.

Although his relationship with his parents isn’t ideal, he’d rather this than live as a mindless puppet, bending to their every will.

‘I want to tell him. I want to tell him that I love him.’

A confession full of long-time adoration is on the tip of Yeonjun’s tongue, but a ringing phone interrupts their conversation before he can finally express it aloud.

With an annoyed huff, Yeonjun checks the caller ID.

“Wait, hyung, wasn’t your appointment at 3?” Soobin asks.

Yeonjun’s heart sinks. “Wait….” He screeches when the numbers 3:24 PM stare straight back at him. “Oh my god, I’m late!”

“What’s with the selfie?” Yeonjun asks as he takes a seat on the couch of the hair salon.

“It’s, like, a before and after picture,” Soobin explains as he smiles at the photo. “In case it goes bad, you can look at this photo and cry. But you pull off anything, so I doubt that would happen.”

It’s such a weird way to phrase a compliment but Soobin says it with so much sincerity that Yeonjun’s heart literally does a flip.

“You really have a way with words,” Yeonjun mumbles, hoping the tenderness isn’t too apparent in his voice.

“Thank you,” Soobin replies proudly.

As Yeonjun scans the current customers within the establishment, he remembers how long the process of dyeing hair is. Not to mention that it will take significantly longer for him since he’s going orange out of all colours.

“Hey...this might take a while. Are you sure you’re okay with waiting?” Yeonjun asks.

“I’m okay. Don’t worry about me,” Soobin reassures with a wave of his hands. “I’m having a good time!”

“Are you sure?”

Soobin nods fervently. “Positive. Don’t worry about me.”

Even so, Yeonjun can’t dispel the uneasiness in his heart. “Hmm….”

“How about…you make it up to me by treating me to ice cream?” Soobin asks with a shit-eating grin.

If it were anyone else, Yeonjun would roll his eyes and whine before eventually caving in. However, for Soobin, he confidently nods and states, “Done. I’ll treat you to ice cream.”

Soobin splutters at the easy agreement. “Wait, no, hyung, I was joking. You don’t have to—”

“I’ve made up my mind. I’m treating you to ice cream after this.”

Soon, it’s time for Yeonjun to begin the process of dyeing his hair. Yet, instead of fixating on his reflection and debating whether he should really commit such a drastic change of appearance, all he can focus on is Soobin’s reflection in the mirror.

‘His face has matured a lot…and his sense of style has gotten so much better. And his hair doesn’t fall into his eyes anymore…He’s gotten more confident. But his smile is still the same….’

In the mirror, Yeonjun notices Soobin scanning his surroundings with weary eyes. Then, he puts his phone up and poses for a photo with a peace sign.

Yeonjun snorts, alerting the younger. Soobin looks up, and when he locks eyes with Yeonjun, he purses his lips together, a sign of embarrassment. But he quickly recovers and snaps a photo of Yeonjun, who pulls up a subtle peace sign.

Throughout the whole application and dyeing process, Yeonjun pretends to be watching the hairdresser work their magic on his hair as a cover-up for staring at Soobin and internally crying over his adorable mannerisms.

It takes two and a half hours for Yeonjun to finish dyeing his hair. When he looks in the mirror, his jaw drops at the sight. He turns his head from side to side, admiring the new hair colour.

“Wah! It looks so good!” A familiar voice exclaims.

Soobin appears from behind him and starts circling Yeonjun, all the while praising Yeonjun’s looks.

“Thanks!” Yeonjun beams. Although he finds it quite embarrassing, a surge of confidence courses through his body. He does look good!

“You’re, like, one of the only people I know who can pull off orange. The other people I know are SEVENTEEN, but I don’t really know them know them , so I guess you’re technically the only one?”

Yeonjun snorts. “I have no idea how to take that.”

“As a compliment!”

“Sure. Anyways, we’ll grab ice cream after I pay, yeah?”

“Yup!”

“What flavour did you get?” Soobin asks, scanning the scoops of ice cream in the paper cup.

“Um…mint chocolate,” Yeonjun answers, showing the younger his cup.

In an instance, Soobin grimaces at the answer. “Okay, ew. I was hoping to try some of yours, but you got the worst flavour in existence. Literally, what is wrong with you.”

“Wh— hey, it’s not that bad!” Chuckling, Yeonjun takes a spoonful of ice cream and lifts it towards Soobin, who cringes and dodges the tiny spoon as if it were some sort of bug.

“No! It tastes exactly like toothpaste!”

“It really doesn’t. Come on, just have a try.”

Despite his frown, Soobin still opens his mouth. Out of instinct, Yeonjun feeds the ice cream to him and only registers his actions after the fact.

‘OH MY GOD, I JUST FED HIM, WHAT THE HELL, OH NO, HE PROBABLY THINKS I’M SO WEIRD–’

“That tastes exactly like how I expect it would. But not at the same time,” Soobin notes as he smacks his lips.

“Uh…what?” Yeonjun asks, trying to remain as calm as possible and not as if he wants to collide his face against the nearest brick wall.

“That was interesting. Still not a fan, though.” Soobin then scoops up some of his ice cream and extends it towards Yeonjun, saying, “Try some of mine. It will reset your tastebuds and make you realise that mint chocolate is shit.”

Gulping, Yeonjun accepts the ice cream, praying that his galloping heart calms down lest it bursts into glitter.

“It’s…good,” Yeonjun mumbles. To be honest, he can’t taste anything as his high body temperature interferes with his senses.

As they walk down the empty street, eating their ice cream, Yeonjun’s intense heart rate doesn’t show any sign of slowing down. Yet, oddly enough, he doesn’t mind the feeling.

A simple yet sweet and warm joy that emerges when beside the one he loves.

“Hyung, hyung!” Soobin excitedly calls as he turns around, walking backwards. “You should take some pictures! Your hair looks really good, and the vibes are immaculate. I’m sure your followers would appreciate them!”

“Sure. I’m feeling good.”

“Woah…I keep saying this, but you seriously look so good with orange hair! It really matches you. Oh my god, like, I’m in awe,” Soobin says as he scrolls through the multitude of photos that he has taken.

“Thank you, Soobin. From now on, if I need anyone to hype me up, I’ll be counting on you,” Yeonjun jokes.

“Aw, that’s a bit pressuring. But I’ll do my best!”

A phone’s ring interrupts their small paradise. When Soobin checks the caller ID, his face slightly falls. And through the duration of the call, Soobin seems to sink further into disappointment.

“My dad wants me to come home. My curfew is almost up,” Soobin explains with a pout.

“Oh….” Yeonjun mutters. He quickly shakes away the sadness and says, “I’ll walk you to the train.”

“You’re not coming with me?”

‘Oh, right. He thinks I take the same train as him.’

“No, not today. Staying over at a friend’s. We have a dance thing coming up, so we’re planning to practice tomorrow morning,” Yeonjun lies. Well, it’s not a full-lie since he plans to stay at Wooyoung’s soon. It’s just that he wasn’t planning on going today.

Thankfully, Soobin believes him and starts asking for more details as they make their way towards the train platform.

Although there are no stars in the night sky that blankets over them, Yeonjun wishes for time to stop, even just for a minute.

Yet, by some cruel twist of fate, they arrive at their destination earlier than expected.

“I had a lot of fun today,” Soobin says, bouncing joyfully. “I would love to do something like this again!”

“Yeah, for sure. We need to hang out more,” Yeonjun replies, hoping the sadness isn’t obvious in his voice.

As if ripped from a scene straight out of a drama, the train emerges from the distance, its familiar rumbling drawing closer.

“I’ll see you soon, Yeonjunie-hyung!”

“Hmm. See you soon, Soobin-ah.”

Even after getting on the carriage, Soobin continues to wave through the window, eliciting Yeonjun to do the same. It’s only when the train disappears that Yeonjun finally lowers his hand. Pocketing his hands, Yeonjun begins walking back to his apartment.

‘Somehow…I feel like something has changed. We’ve gotten closer,’ Yeonjun thinks. ‘I hope we can continue like this. Then, one day, I’ll finally be able to tell him…just how much he means to me.”

❣️❣️

Yeonjun fights away the lovesick expression threatening to take over his face. Alas, he is but a pathetic man in the headlights of love, and he practically melts against the counter in a gooey mess.

“What’s up with you?” Kai asks, sparing his coworker a glance before returning to his phone.

With a dopey smile, Yeonjun opens the comment section on his latest post and proudly shows Kai the comment Soobin left.

Kai stares at the screen for a few seconds before raising an eyebrow. “That’s it?”

“What do you mean, ‘that’s it’?”

“Oh, babe….Well…I guess it’s cute that you get excited over this.” As Kai awaits the in-game texts from the characters of Mystic Messenger, he asks, “How are things going with Soobin?”

“We’ve been texting more, and we comment on each other’s posts now. Other than that, nothing has really changed?” Yeonjun answers, slowly becoming more hesitant when he notices Kai’s disapproving expression.

Kai pockets his phone, giving his full attention to Yeonjun and his apparent lack of ability to comprehend the dangers of the stagnant nature of his relationship with Soobin. “‘Nothing has changed’? Oh, no, you’ve fallen into a trap.”

“What are you talking about?”

“When people become complacent in a relationship and stop trying, sparks and excitement disappear. It’s a scientific fact. Trust me, bro.”

“The more you say that, the less effective it becomes.”

Kai inhales deeply as if he were calming himself down. “Yeonjun. Listen to me. If you get too lax, Soobin might get swept off his feet by some other guy that actually shows interest in him.”

Yeonjun winces at the mere thought. “So…what should I do?”

Kai grips Yeonjun’s shoulders, giving the older man a sense of deja vu. “Please. For the love of god. Make a move. I am begging.”

“…How?”

Kai proceeds to go on a long rant explaining these intricate and well-thought-out tips and strategies that he probably got from some random teen blog. Nevertheless, Yeonjun appreciates the effort, though he admittedly only took a handful of advice to heart, which were:

  1. Be yourself.
  2. Make subtle gestures
  3. Put yourself out there.

Unbeknownst to Yeonjun, he would be presented with an opportunity to put these tips into practice a few days later, thanks to Soobin’s endearing clumsiness….

anyway wish me luck on my assignment i really need it

Good luck

Hope you can get the noodles

Yeonjun opens his pantry door, where packets of instant noodles greet him, including the specific type that Soobin craves.

Reaching for the said packet, Yeonjun stares at it intently as if it had all the answers in the universe.

“Would it be too much to deliver this to him?” Yeonjun wonders aloud.

They say that patience is a virtue. And it’s not like there would be any major consequence if Soobin couldn’t eat the noodles right away. Well…other than a mental breakdown and bad grades.

Wait.

Okay, let’s view this from a different angle. If Yeonjun did deliver the Mi Goreng noodles to Soobin, what would happen?

Well…Soobin would be delighted. He would definitely smile so widely that his eyes would wrinkle and his dimples would show and his cheeks would go all soft and mochi-like—

“God, why am I like this? Why am I doing this?” Yeonjun questions with a shake of his head as he packs a handful of instant noodles in a bag.

By the time Yeonjun realises that maybe this isn’t the best idea, he’s already inside the Uber, heading towards Soobin’s home. Or at least, he thinks that it’s Soobin’s house. The younger never mentioned anything about moving, after all.

Nonetheless, he texts Soobin to be certain.

Hey, you still live at XX Blue Lane, right?

yessir

idk why it’s named that

this lane isn’t blue

why the question

wait don’t tell me there’s some kind of disaster brewing near my place rn

hyung i’m scared what’s going on

Don’t worry, just wait a bit

???

ok

Yeonjun exhales deeply, yet the action does nothing to ease his nerves or racing heartbeat. Maybe this is a bad idea, after all.

But it’s too late to back out now. He has to commit and then deal with the consequences.

Soon, the Uber driver pulls over in front of Soobin’s house. Yeonjun quickly thanks the driver before exiting the car, tightly gripping the plastic bag. In the short journey that it takes him to walk to the front door, Yeonjun debates whether he should just run home or if he should stick to his guns and actually deliver the noodles himself.

But before he can even come to a decision, his feet have already made it to the front door.

‘Shit. I guess this is really happening, huh?’

To psych himself up, Yeonjun smacks his cheeks with both hands and inhales deeply. Then, he rings the doorbell.

“Wha— Yeonjun-hyung?!” Soobin cries in complete astonishment. He opens the door fully and scans the older up and down as if trying to gauge whether the man in front of his door is a real, live human being, not just some hyper-realistic hologram. Or clone. Or some weird hallucination that appeared due to the inability to satisfy his cravings.

At that moment, Yeonjun notices how the weight of the assignment has affected Soobin’s appearance — his hair is dishevelled, his eye bags are more prominent, and his shirt is crumpled, with a small stain near the neckline.

“I got you this,” Yeonjun says, holding up the bag full of Mi Goreng packets. “You said you were craving it so….”

“Oh, my god, what?! You really didn’t have to, oh my god. Yeonjun, why—?!”

“Hyung.”

“Yeonjun-hyung, you’re literally, like— Oh my gosh, I can’t— I’m— I literally have no words, hang on.”

“That’s okay. I’ll just leave this here and go home….” But before Yeonjun can place the bag on the doorstep and execute his escape plan, Soobin stops him with an exclamation.

“Just, uh….Come in for now. Holy shit, I can’t believe you did this, oh my gosh….”

Yeonjun follows Soobin into his home, eyeing the interior along the way. The first and last time he was at Soobin’s house was when they had to watch a boring film for their literature class. At first glance, it seems like the passage of time didn’t affect Soobin’s home, but when Yeonjun looks closer, he notices small changes, such as the rearrangement of family photos and the extra decorations added to the hallway.

“Okay. Um. The shock has worn off, so…Yeonjunie-hyung, what the heck?!” Soobin suddenly shrieks, causing the older to flinch harshly. “Has anyone told you that you’re sweet to a fault? Like, you’re so sweet that I’m surprised you haven’t been scammed yet.”

“You said you were craving it, and I happened to have some at home…I don’t really understand what the problem is?” Yeonjun expresses honestly.

Soobin splutters for a good few seconds. “You could’ve delivered it to me through an Uber parcel. Wait, no, I could’ve waited until tomorrow! You didn’t have to do this!”

“But I wanted to.”

Speechless, Soobin merely blinks at Yeonjun for a few seconds before pouting. “Why are you so sweet, hyung? Oh my god.” Soobin even smacks Yeonjun’s shoulder for good measure. “Thank you so much.”

“It’s no problem.” Yeonjun reaches for a packet and declares, “I’ll make it for you. You can keep working on your assignment.”

“No, hyung, you’ve literally done enough—”

“When is it due?”

“What?”

“When is your assignment due.”

With a defeated sigh, Soobin looks down at the floorboards and admits, “At 11 on the dot.”

Seeing no room for argument, Yeonjun removes two packets of Mi Goreng, hoping that this instant meal will give Soobin the energy he needs to power through his last assignment. After some help and guidance from Soobin regarding the location of certain utensils, Yeonjun successfully finishes making the noodles for Soobin.

“Oh my god, you’re the best,” Soobin gushes as he closes his laptop. Yeonjun places the large bowl of noodles in front of him, eliciting a fascinated gasp. “You made two? Okay. That’s it. If I ever win the lottery, I’m giving you the money, hands down.”

Yeonjun snorts. “I don’t think that’s necessary, but I appreciate the thought.”

“You’re not going to eat?”

“Nah. Seeing you eat is enough.”

Soobin chokes on the mouthful of noodles and starts coughing harshly, prompting Yeonjun to freak the fuck out and start slapping Soobin’s back.

“I’m fine!” Soobin manages to sputter after a series of aggressive coughs.

“Are you sure? I can grab you some water. It’s in the fridge, right?”

“Y-yeah.”

Thankfully, Soobin’s coughs seem to die down after a large swig of water.

While Soobin continues eating, Yeonjun hops on his phone and mindlessly scrolls through his Instagram feed while occasionally glancing at Soobin and checking his progress with the meal.

“This reminds me of when you last came over,” Soobin comments as he slurps the noodles.

“Oh yeah. When we had to watch that movie for literature,” Yeonjun recalls.

**

“Make yourself at home!” Soobin exclaimed as he opened the front door to his home.

Yeonjun slipped out of his school shoes and gingerly followed Soobin throughout his house, noting the lack of other family members. Even so, his house was far from lonely.

Soobin’s home is much more unruly and chaotic compared to Yeonjun’s pristine and spotless residence. Unfolded blankets and pillows in disarray atop their sitting surfaces, a handful of used tissues on the armchair, and an embarrassing amount of unfinished snack packets on the coffee table.

Despite the mess, there’s an odd comfort to be found in it.

“Sorry about the mess,” Soobin sheepishly said amid folding a blanket.

“That’s okay. Where’s everyone?” Yeonjun asked.

“My dad’s at work, and my sister is at uni, so it’ll just be us two for a while,” Soobin explained as he set up Netflix on his family TV. “Feel free to grab some snacks! I’ll get us some drinks. Do you want soda, or…?”

“Just water is okay.” Yeonjun sat on the couch with impeccable posture, nervously glancing at everything around him.

“Hyung, it’s okay to relax. We’re watching a movie, after all,” Soobin said with a reassuring smile. Then he added, “Well, it’s a shit movie ‘cause it’s for our literature class, but it’s a movie! Get comfortable.”

After the movie, snacks and couch were set up, Yeonjun and Soobin spent the next two hours sitting through the movie.

Personally, Yeonjun found the movie quite interesting. It followed the story of Emily, a bright-eyed girl from the countryside who dreamed of being an actress. In pursuit of her dream, she sacrificed her innocence and naïveté, along with her relationships with her friends, including her treasured childhood friend, Reinhardt.

In the end, Emily became a calculating, manipulative and apathetic person, disregarding those around her when they served no purpose in boosting her career. But after Reinhardt sent her his first and last letter, she realised what she had lost.

But Yeonjun didn’t enjoy this specific movie night because of the film’s plot.

He enjoyed it because Soobin hated the movie.

To entertain himself, he started commentating on the movie and making stupid jokes, similar to YouTubers that ventured in that specific niche. And though Yeonjun rolled his eyes several times, he couldn’t help but laugh at some of Soobin’s words.

The moment the credits began rolling, Soobin leaned back into the couch and sighed. “God, that was a pain! Why did we do that? I could’ve watched a movie review on YouTube or read a summary. We just wasted two hours of our lives,” he whined. “If I were on my deathbed and could choose one last movie to watch, I’d watch this garbage.”

“Why?” Yeonjun asked, genuinely curious. Wouldn’t you want to watch a movie you liked for one last time?

“So it would feel like an eternity had passed until I died. Holy shit, that was so boring.”

Yeonjun stifled a laugh with his hand. It proved to be futile, as some of his giggles slipped out. After clearing his throat, he said, “At least we have the context of the movie. And now we can fully understand the assignment, too.”

Soobin grumbled. “I bet that we have to talk about that one scene where the girl starts doing all those expressions in front of the mirror. Like, ‘it displays how good she is at acting, so at the final scene when she’s standing in front of her husband’s coffin, you don’t know whether her tears are genuine or not’ or some bullshit like that.”

“Her tears are fake in that scene, but they’re real when she reads the letter from her childhood friend. You can tell because she holds her bracelet.”

Soobin’s eyes shot open, and he sat up in an instant, staring at Yeonjun in awe. “What?”

“Because the bracelet is from Reinhardt. It gives her comfort.”

Soobin continued to stare at Yeonjun as if he were an alien. Before the older could question it, Soobin said, “As expected of Yeonjun-hyung. You’re so observant. I didn’t pick up on that at all.

Yeonjun's cheeks heated up at the brazen compliment, and he turned his head, not wanting the younger to notice.

In the distance, the front door clicked open. Soobin straightened up from the sound and turned towards the entrance to the living room, where a young woman peeked her head in.

“Oh, hello,” she greeted upon seeing Yeonjun, who responded with a nod. Then she shifted her gaze to Soobin and said, “Dad’s staying late tonight. I’m going to make some food, so you’re in charge of the dishes, yeah?”

“Yeonjun-ssi, do you want to stay for dinner?” Soobin asked.

Yeonjun blinked. “Is…that allowed?” He responded, looking at the siblings. “I don’t want to intrude.”

“Of course, you’re welcome to stay! Besides, Arin-noona’s just mixes vegetables and eggs together and then fries them. It’s simple. You’re not bothering us at all since she’s barely cooking, anyway—”

Insulted, Arin grabbed the closest object and launched it at Soobin, which happened to be a tissue box. Soobin dodged the flying tissue box at the last minute and then cried, “Noona!”

“Say anything else, and I’m only making two batches — for me and your friend,” She said with a sinister smile.

“Um….” Yeonjun interjected, gaining Soobin and Arin’s attention. “I would love to stay for dinner.”

If Yeonjun had to choose between the food he was served at the Choi’s household or the usual meals he has at his own home, he would choose the Choi’s without a doubt. Even though there were some imperfections, it filled him with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

**

“I remember when you were so fascinated by the omelette Arin-noona made. Now you’re making Mi Goreng all by yourself! Talk about a glow up,” Soobin says.

“It’s not that hard to make Mi Goreng, but I’ll take the compliment,” Yeonjun replies with an amused smile.

“I literally dropped the noodles down the drain, but okay, Mr Humble.”

“To be fair, you were stressed out from the assignment.” Yeonjun glances at the time and sighs when he finds a large 9:32 PM staring back at him. “I should probably go home. Let you work on your assignment.”

“Huh?” Soobin’s face seems to fall in disappointment. “But….”

“If I’m here, you’ll be distracted and won’t get any work done. Remember exam season? Every time I sat next to you, I ended up being dragged into some online game with you. We never got any studying done.”

“I hate how you’re right.” Soobin pouts, eliciting a small chuckle from Yeonjun.

Wishing to placate the younger, Yeonjun reaches out and ruffles Soobin’s hair without a second thought. “Next time, we’ll hang out and relax, okay?”

By the time Yeonjun realises what he’s doing, he begins internally screaming at the prospect of actually making contact with Soobin and at how the younger’s hair smells like vanilla.

“I’ll remember that.” Soobin finishes the few strands of noodles and then sighs in satisfaction. “Thanks for coming over today. You really cheered me up.”

From Soobin’s words of gratitude, warmth and happiness fills Yeonjun’s chest. “Glad to hear it. Good luck with your assignment.”

Soobin nods in determination. “I got this!” But then he shrieks as if he were hit with a realisation. “Wait, I need to walk you out! Sorry for being such a horrible host, oh my god.”

“I mean, I did show up out of nowhere.” Nonetheless, Yeonjun doesn’t fight the suggestion, wishing to spend at least a few more seconds by Soobin’s side.

When at the threshold of the door, Soobin pulls Yeonjun into a hug, whispering, “Thank you so much, hyung. I feel a lot better now.”

Yeonjun’s ears heat up at their proximity. Too flustered for words, Yeonjun resorts to reciprocating the embrace, hoping that his message will reach Soobin.

Notes:

guys I’m on a road trip and there’s a hella THUNDERSTORM i am fearing for my life anyways hope u enjoyed this chapter !!

Chapter 7: Honestly, I’m a bit frustrated (Why am I like this?)

Notes:

at the chance ur seeing this bestie, I’m planning to dye my hair blonde bc i got halfhearted permission from my dad. Like the famous Kang Taehyun said (he’s my bias wrecker/second-fav from TXT), it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Anyways, I’m thinking of doing an ashy blonde with a root melt, maybe ?? My roots will definitely be showing bc i can’t be bothered dyeing my eyebrows. Yeah, so, if ur seeing this, message me :))

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Yeonjun holds the ending pose for five more seconds before he exhales deeply, trying to calm his racing heart. Lifting his shirt, he uses it to wipe the beads of sweat forming on his forehead and grimaces at his body’s overall stickiness.

“Dude, you’re drenched. Take a break, jeez,” Wooyoung comments as he throws Yeonjun’s water bottle towards him.

Catching it with both hands, Yeonjun thanks Wooyoung before gulping down nearly half of the bottle. After wiping the excess water off his lips, he prepares to go through the choreography again, but Wooyoung’s loud protest stops him in his tracks.

“You can dance later, once Changbin has come back with snacks!” Wooyoung exclaims, throwing yet another item towards Yeonjun, this one being a towel.

Although Yeonjun chucks the towel back to Wooyoung, he takes his suggestion on board and plops onto the wooden floors, finally allowing his body to relax. Reaching for his phone, Yeonjun hops on Instagram, and of course, uses his break time to scroll through random posts on his explore page, and update himself on Soobin’s life.

“Ooh, who you stalking?” Wooyoung asks from behind.

Yeonjun cringes and hides his phone screen in his chest. “No one,” he replies, turning his head and poking his tongue at Wooyoung. He already has Kai constantly on his case about Soobin, and he does not need another self-proclaimed love expert pestering him every step of the way. Especially not Wooyoung, of all people.

“You’re no fun,” Wooyoung whines as he plops onto the floor and practically melts against Yeonjun’s back, using him as some kind of pillow. Yeonjun returns to his phone but decides to switch to his explore page, just in case.

Out of the blue, Wooyoung groans. “The song is stuck in my head! God, if I have to hear Sucker one more time, I will rip my eardrums off.”

“Me too. I swear, I’ll hear this song even when I’m sleeping,” Yeonjun replies.

“I have no idea if that would be a great dream or a nightmare. Maybe a dream, because that means that the Jonas Brothers are there.” Wooyoung whines as he extends his arm, lamenting, “I’m gonna be so sore tomorrow.”

“Make sure you remember to drink some painkillers before you sleep.”

“Oh, yeah, right.”

“And take some ice baths. They help.”

“Um, I’m not dunking myself in cold water. Are you insane?”

“Then don’t cry to me when you’re in pain.”

The door to the dance studio pushes open, and Changbin enters, holding a bag full of snacks.

“Oh, thank god,” Yeonjun murmurs as he pushes himself off the ground.

As the three recharge their energy, they discuss the upcoming plans for their dance cover and determine that after two more days of practice, they can finally film on Friday.

“I think we can finish up in an hour,” Changbin says as he looks at his watch. “Do one run-through of the whole some, polish up some parts and maybe change a few things and then one final go. That okay with you all?”

“No objections here!” Wooyoung replies with a peace sign.

“I’m fine with that,” Yeonjun says.

♡♡♡

Wooyoung falls to the ground with a groan, while Changbin rushes to his drink bottle. Yeonjun shakes his head at his friends’ dramatics, but quickly refocuses on his reflection in the mirror, repeating the choreography that Wooyoung had come up with.

“My god, my legs are on fire,” Wooyoung cries as massages his calves. “Maybe I’ll do the ice bath thing after all. Holy shit, ow, ow, ow….”

“Yeonjun, you’re not stopping?” Changbin asks.

“Nah. I wanna get this part right before I leave. You guys go on ahead,” Yeonjun replies, keeping his gaze on the mirror.

Wooyoung and Changbin shoot each other a glance. Eventually, Wooyoung shrugs and reminds him, “You have another hour here before they kick you out. Remember to lock the doors.”

“I left the keys on the table, next to the stereo. Don’t push yourself too hard,” Changbin says.

Yeonjun smiles gratefully at his friends and wishes them a good night as they both exit the dance studio. Once alone, he sighs and runs his finger through his hair, determined to nail the choreography.

Yeonjun places his phone horizontally against the mirror before replaying the song from the beginning. Allowing the music to guide his movements, Yeonjun focuses on hitting every beat rather than his reflection in the mirror.

Once he’s ran through the whole song, he checks the video, scrutinising his performance. In the sequence before the chorus, there’s a part where his arms aren’t as straight as he thought. And during his solo, there’s a section that would look better if he bends his legs at a 90-degree angle….

Clicking his tongue, Yeonjun prepares to record another self-evaluation when a notification banner appears atop his screen, displaying a message from Kai.

HUENING KAI

> hues.kaikamal

🙄

ew

When the text bubble disappears, Yeonjun switches back to his camera app and sets up his phone for another round of practice, this time implementing the changes to improve his performance. Just as he goes to check the second video, three raps on the door gain his attention.

Annoyed, Yeonjun opens the door, assuming that one of his friends had accidentally left their belongings behind.

So when he comes face to face with Soobin, he, understandably, yelps in surprise and backs away to the point of losing balance.

“Woah, hyung!” Soobin cries, quickly reaching out to Yeonjun’s shoulder and stabilising him. “You okay?”

Their sudden close proximity does nothing to calm Yeonjun’s panicked brain cells. Thankfully, one of them rises to the challenge and assists him to say, “I’m okay. W-what are you doing here?”

“I visited Kittyincidence and Kai told me to give this to you?” Soobin explains, albeit with bewilderment.

During this time, Yeonjun eyes the younger up and down. He’s as cute as ever, even in a simple sky blue hoodie, black sweatpants, and his trusty crossbody bag. In his hand is a translucent plastic bag, with a triangle-shaped packet and a takeout container inside. Yeonjun belatedly realises that the items inside the bag are the ones from Kai.

“He said that you might be hungry after practising for the dance video. The cover of the…famous people’s song.”

“The Jonas Brothers.”

“Yeah, that one.”

Yeonjun accepts the plastic bag and checks inside. Along with the cute sandwiches from Kittyincidence, there’s a small, cute bag filled with what looks like butter cookies.

“Um…I made those!” Soobin reveals, uncharacteristically shy. “As a way to say thank you for helping me. Without you, I don’t think I would’ve got my assignment done on time.”

When Yeonjun looks up, his heart practically melts at the sight of Soobin’s cheeks dusted with a light pink. “I appreciate it a lot. Thanks, Soobin.”

“You’re welcome!” Soobin’s eyes trail over to the dance studio and he stands on the tip of his toes. Yeonjun snorts at the less-than-subtle attempt at peeking inside.

To quell the younger’s curiosity, Yeonjun offers, “Do you want to watch?”

Soobin smiles in delight and nods. As Yeonjun opens the door further, Soobin curiously glances around. “I’ve always wanted to see you dance in person, to be honest,” He admits. “You look really good in the videos!”

“Thanks,” Yeonjun replies, beaming widely. To have the subject of your affections acknowledge your passion…Yeonjun could get addicted to this happiness.

Sitting down against the wall, Yeonjun opens the plastic package and begins scarfing down the sandwich. Soobin sits across from him, watching in amazement and concern. “Did you eat before?”

“This is my first meal,” Yeonjun admits with a sheepish expression. “I was so focused on dance that I kinda forgot…?”

“Oh my god, hyung,” Soobin mumbles with a disapproving expression. “That’s so…bad! You really need to take care of yourself more.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know.”

In record time, Yeonjun finishes the sandwiches and immediately moves onto the cookies. Although there are some burnt parts and some of the cookies are misshapen, the care put into them is evident.

Oh, shit.

The fact that Soobin went out of his way to bake something for him…! Oh god, Yeonjun’s happiness levels are off the charts. If five devastating events were to occur to Yeonjun consecutively after this, he wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about them. After all, they won’t take away from the fact that Soobin baked cookies for him.

Yeonjun’s lips practically tremble from how hard he fights away his grin. But when he bites into the cookie, he gives up and breaks into a joyful smile.

“This is delicious,” he gushes as he grabs another cookie. After eating a few more, Yeonjun wipes his hand on his shorts and carefully ties the bag.

Filled with resolve, Yeonjun rises to his feet and runs his hand through his hair. “Thanks, Soobin-ah. I feel so much better now.”

He turns back to his own reflection in the mirror, sets up his phone to record and then restarts the music one more time.

Knowing that Soobin’s eyes are on him, Yeonjun tries harder in this session. Along with paying close attention to his body, he ensures that his expression matches the song and its vibes. And when he happens to make eye contact with Soobin through the mirror, he smirks and even winks at one point.

By the end of the song, Yeonjun pants heavily as he holds his pose. In the mirror, he sees Soobin with his jaw glued to the ground in awe. Then, Soobin breaks into applause and cheers loudly. “That was so fucking good! Oh my god, you’re literally insane?! Holy smokes, that was so good!” Soobin places a hand on his chest and takes a deep breath before continuing, “God  I have no idea how to put this into words but just know that you are a fucking, talented-ass, amazing dancer! Show-stopping! Literally the very definition of serving cunt.”

Yeonjun snorts at the choice of words, but the fluttering of his heart reveals his true feelings. “You really give top-tier compliments.”

Soobin coos and scrunches up his face as if he is about to cry. “Aww! Yeonjunie-hyung! That is one of the best things you’ve ever said to me, oh my god.”

“I feel like that’s a bit of a stretch, but okay.”

Yeonjun checks the recording on his phone with the intention of reflecting on his performance, but his eyes end up on Soobin’s figure in the back. His reactions are especially adorable, with him clapping along to the beat of the song and hyping Yeonjun up in his own way.

Yet another day of Yeonjun being utterly head over heels for Soobin.

‘Wait, that’s not what I should be focusing on,’ Yeonjun reminds himself with a shake of his head. Recalibrating his brain to set his priorities straight, Yeonjun focuses on his performance, noting that there are parts in his solo where his moves could be sharper, allowing for a more satisfying and clean dance.

Singing the song under his breath, Yeonjun practises the sequence while watching his reflection closely. “Hmm…maybe not,” He mumbles. He repeats the sequence, this time emphasising his hands. He tilts his head, debating on the moves.

“Hey, Soobin-ah. What do you think?” Yeonjun asks, turning around to face the younger.

For some reason, Soobin seems to be in a daze. Blinking rapidly, he mutters, “Y-yeah?”

“I don’t know if I should do it like this…” Yeonjun demonstrates the version where he flicks his arm out to the beat. “…Or this one.” Then, he displays the version where he points straight out.

“Um…I-I don’t know, I think they both look good,” Soobin says as he plays with his bangs. “Um…if it helps, I think the second one has more of an oomph. It matches the vibes of the song.”

Yeonjun returns to his reflection and tries the move again, observing it closely. He then dances through the whole sequence, keeping Soobin’s words in mind. “Huh. It looks good. I’ll talk to the others about it. Thanks, Soobin.”

Out of habit, Yeonjun wipes away his sweat with the bottom of shirt. It’s only when a high-pitched squeak emerges from Soobin that Yeonjun realises his mistake.

‘Oh, god, why did I do that?! He probably thinks I’m a try-hard,’ Yeonjun internally berates himself. But the rational side of his brain reminds him that he has a dance cover to practise for, which helps alleviate his embarrassment.

Yeonjun takes a few deep breaths to refocus, and then continues practising his solo part, this time trying different variations of the same move. In this part where he extends his hand, should he also tilt his head back? Or should he keep his head at the same angle but smirk instead?

Sighing, Yeonjun runs a hand through his hair. In that moment, he happens to catch Soobin’s eye.

Although the younger seems surprised at first, he beams widely at Yeonjun, showcasing his beautiful dimples and eye smile.

The stress and frustration within Yeonjun’s chest are swept away, and Yeonjun can’t help but reply with his own grin.

Call him simple, but that damned dimpled smile always makes his day.

Suddenly, Soobin squeaks and scrambles to his feet. His eyes are stricken with panic, and there’s a bright flush high on his cheeks. “I— Um—! I need to— need to go home! You know…Curfew! Don’t wanna miss the last train!”

Covering up his disappointment with a smile, Yeonjun says, “Okay. Thanks for coming over. And the cookies too. They’re delicious.” Ignoring the pounding in his heart that has nothing to do with the relentless dance practice, Yeonjun continues, “Seeing you always cheers me up.”

“Y-yeah! No worries. Glad to hear it. Uh….” For some reason, Soobin’s mouth is stuck in a grimace, and he keeps looking at everything but Yeonjun. In spite of the worrisome behaviour, he replies, “You were really cool. Good luck with everything! See you soon!”

Soobin rushes out of the dance studio, leaving a bittersweet Yeonjun.

Although their time together was short, Yeonjun cherished every second. Though, a part of him wishes that Soobin could’ve stayed….

Yeonjun shakes away the useless thoughts and smacks his cheeks, reminding himself to focus on the task at hand. Keeping Soobin’s smile at the forefront of his mind, remembering his encouraging words during moments of frustration, and eating his baked gift to recharge his energy, Yeonjun continues to practise late into the night.

“Yeonjun-hyung! Can you refill the cats’ food bowls? Thank you~” Kai calls.

“Yeah, sure,” Yeonjun replies as he pockets his phone. Grabbing the packet of dry food from the pantry, Yeonjun makes his way to the glass room full of cats. He carefully enters the room, greets the cuties gathering at his feet and then fills their food bowls.

The adorable grey tabby, appropriately named Tab-Tabs by Kai, rubs her face against Yeonjun’s ankle and mewls cutely, melting Yeonjun’s heart.

After a quick scan of the cafe, Yeonjun lets his desires take over, and he pets Tab-Tabs, scratching the spot behind her ears that makes her head tilt back and her eyes scrunch with joy. Endeared, Yeonjun ends up playing with all the cats in the glass room. He’s so enamoured that he barely registers the sound of the bell signalling that a customer has arrived.

By the time Yeonjun considers looking up and checking the cafe, he makes eye contact with Soobin, who’s sitting at the counter with Beomgyu and Taehyun, while Kai is behind the counter.

Oh, no.

Yeonjun softly places the cats in his lap on the ground and exits the room before scrambling out of the glass room.

“Hey! Uh…how long have you guys been here?” Yeonjun asks, eyeing Kai in worry.

Although he knows that Kai wouldn’t outright expose his feelings to Soobin, there is no doubt that Kai would have fun trying to hint at the idea.

“Not for long. We were hanging out, and Soobin thought to have lunch here,” Taehyun explains with a suspicious smile.

“Yup! We get to have delicious food, you guys get profit, and we all get to talk!” Beomgyu lists on his fingers. Then, he clicks them as he searches for the right words. “We’re, um…it’s like…killing three flies with one swatter.”

Taehyun sighs. Soobin shakes his head. Yeonjun processes the odd saying. Kai wheezes quietly. Beomgyu merely smiles as if nothing is wrong.

“Sorry about that, he doesn’t know his proverbs,” Soobin mumbles, covering Beomgyu’s mouth with his hand. “He’s going through a phase where he wants to sound smart but can’t.”

Soobin suddenly yelps and removes his hand to frantically wipe it on his clothed thigh. “Don’t lick me! That’s nasty!”

“Well, maybe you shouldn’t have put your hand near my mouth,” Beomgyu replies with a poke of his tongue.

Even from that interaction, Yeonjun develops a good grasp of their dynamic. It’s honestly cute seeing Soobin interact with his friends.

As the three friends continue conversing, Yeonjun prepares the coffee while Kai brews the strawberry and watermelon juice, no doubt ordered by Soobin.

“By the way, Yeonjun-ssi,” Taehyun speaks up, gaining said person’s attention. His voice was almost shy. “Your hair looks really good.”

“Right?” Soobin exclaims, oddly proud. “I know I’ve seen it a few times, but I’m blown away every time. It looks amazing!”

Even though Yeonjun can’t see Kai’s face, he knows the younger has an evil ear-splitting grin.

“Th-thank you,” Yeonjun replies. His face is so flushed that if someone were to put a tomato next to it, they would have the same shade. “You can call me hyung.”

“Mhm! And no need for formalities for us, either. You’re Soobin-hyung’s friend, anyway,” Beomgyu says with a smile.

“Hey, speaking of…” Kai interjects, his smile somehow more mischievous. “I’ve heard stories from Yeonjun about you, but I’ve always been curious about your point of view.”

Soobin furrows his eyebrows in concern. “What kind of stories? I promise you, I’m no longer the person I was when I was in high school. We don’t talk about that era.”

“No, they were all good stories!” Yeonjun exclaims. “You always made me laugh and cheered me up….” By the end of his sentence, Yeonjun might as well be doing a discount cosplay of Spider-Man.

“Really? Aw, hyung, glad to hear that!”

“Now, I’m curious,” Taehyun comments. “What stories do you have of Soobin?”

“Ooh, I wanna know too!” Beomgyu adds.

“Um….” Yeonjun hums as he adds the finishing touches to Taehyun’s iced caramel macchiato and Beomgyu’s iced mocha. “A funny story? I’m, uh, not sure if this qualifies, but there was this one time where….”

**

Instead of studying for a biology test, Yeonjun was standing outside an anime merchandise store, watching as Soobin psyched himself up to open a mystery box containing a limited edition figurine from an anime titled Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

It all started in their literature class when Soobin was scrolling through a website rather than listening to their teacher explain the intricacies of some poem that they were annotating as a whole class.

Out of nowhere, Soobin’s breath hitched, and his eyes went wider than a golf ball as he leaned into his screen, staring at the words in disbelief.

Soobin grabbed his exercise book, flipped to the last page, and wrote a quick message before ripping out the page for Yeonjun to see. “What do you have after lunch?” He wrote.

Yeonjun replied, “Double Independent Study Time.”

When Soobin’s eyes fell on his response, his lips curled up into his trademark sly grin.

“Let’s go to the city together :)”

Initially, Yeonjun opposed the idea. But apparently, the store had a rule of one box per customer due to the special event. And so, taking pity on his classmate, Yeonjun agreed.

And so, after lunch, they met up and gravelled to the CBD together. During the train trip to the city, Soobin spent the entire ride explaining the lores of the characters in the limited box alongside the convoluted story that sounded quite interesting. Although Yeonjun struggled to keep up, it was nice seeing someone so enthusiastic about their interests.

“I checked the figurines, and, like, I’m fine with all of them except for this fucker.” Soobin showed him a figurine of some sort of white cat with red eyes and a menacing smile. “If I get Kyubey, I’m throwing my phone out the window.”

“On the chance that you do and I don’t, we’re trading?” Yeonjun asked.

Soobin nodded. “That’s the plan.” But then his face became clouded with worry as he added, “Unless you’re a secret fan, and that’s not okay with you?”

“I don’t care either way. As long as you get what you want.”

Along the journey to the anime merchandise store, Soobin had his fingers crossed, mumbling various phrases that can be summed up with, “I’d love to get Madoka or Homura, but honestly, I’m fine with anyone. Just as long as it’s not the little contract demon.”

He continued this mantra even while purchasing the boxes, much to the amusement of the cashier and the embarrassment of Yeonjun.

After finding a space away from the walking public, Soobin was already tearing open the box. The moment his eyes landed on the figurine inside, his face fell in disappointment. “Goddamnit,” he murmured as he pulled out the Kyubey figurine from the box. “I mean…it’s—it’s cute.”

Yeonjun opened his box, and when he saw a white figurine inside, he looked at Soobin’s figurine, cross-referencing them with each other.

“Oh….” He trailed off as he pulled yet another Kyubey from the box.

“Are you— seriously? Both of us got Kyubey? It was a one-in-a-six chance. Two in twelve, technically. What the hell?” Soobin whined, staring into the beady red eyes of the cursed figurine. “I don’t know if that’s lucky or unlucky. What are the chances?”

“Two in twelve, apparently.”

“Shut up.” Soobin blows a breath in frustration and wipes the top of his lip. “I can’t believe that. I literally got the only character I don’t want! I would’ve been fine with all of them. But I got this thing!”

Yeonjun knew that Soobin liked playing up the dramatics. It was highly unlikely that he was actually upset; he was probably more offended about getting his least desired figurine twice in a row.

Yet, Yeonjun wasn’t a fan of the sight. Soobin looked better with his dimpled smile.

“Come on, Choi. It’s not all that bad. I mean, it’s kinda impressive, getting the only one you didn’t like. Even funnier that I got the same one,” Yeonjun reassured. Lifting his figurine, he knocked it against Soobin’s one and, with a faint smile, said, “I guess this means we’re matching.”

In an instance, Soobin’s displeased expression was replaced by a dimpled smile. “Hey, you’re right! We are matching!”

Satisfied, Soobin placed the figurine back in the box and put it in his bag. “Let’s grab some bubble tea while we’re here. Might as well, you know? Come on, Yeonjun-hyung!”

Before Yeonjun could fully process the change in honorifics, Soobin had already grabbed his hand and began dragging him towards the bubble tea shop.

**

“Okay, that’s so valid. I hate Kyubey, too,” Kai comments with a shake of his head.

“Right? Like, even to this day, I’m still mad. Like, seriously, I knew my luck in gacha games was bad, but that was just depressing,” Soobin rants, moving his hands around animatedly. “There was literally a 10 out 12 chance to get literally anyone else, but the odds were against me? Fuck off.”

“Do you still have the figurines?” Kai brings, switching his gaze between Yeonjun and Soobin. Yeonjun really isn’t a fan of his boyish cheekiness.

After making eye contact with Yeonjun, Soobin smiles and says, “Answer in three?”

“Okay,” Yeonjun replies.

“One….”

“Two….”

“Three….”

“Yes.”

Both of them simultaneously cheer, and Soobin raises his hand, which Yeonjun shyly but happily hi-fives.

“Soobin-hyung sounds exactly the same,” Taehyun comments as he sips his caramel macchiato. “Skipping class to buy a limited edition figurine is peak Soobin behaviour.”

“Yeah, Soobin barely changed,” Yeonjun replies with a small smile. “The only thing that changed about him is that his fashion sense is so much better.”

“Hey. In my defence, I didn’t know about these apparent rules of fashion. Like, how was I supposed to know that I shouldn’t pair a tight shirt with skinny jeans?”

“After you look in a mirror, the fuck?” Beomgyu replies in a matter-of-fact tone. “That clashes so badly with each other.” As a quick afterthought, he adds, “But props to those who like wearing that.”

“Then, Soobin-hyung, in your opinion, do you think Yeonjun-hyung changed much?” Kai inquires with a glint in his eye.

To Yeonjun’s surprise, Soobin shakes his head. “Things have changed, of course, but at the end of the day, he’s still the same kind hyung from high school.”

Yeonjun leans on the counter, covering his dopey smile and reddening cheeks with a hand. “Oh…glad to hear that.”

“Aw, come on! You don’t have to pretend to protect his image,” Kai smirks as he plops his head on top of Yeonjun’s, annoying the hell out of Yeonjun.

“I really mean it. I, uh, actually have an episode of what I mean.”

Yeonjun furrows his eyebrows, trying to recall such an instance. Though it’s true that he was never outright nasty to Soobin, he always kept his distance from the younger one throughout their high school years.

Kai, Beomgyu and Taehyun all look over to Soobin, waiting for him to elaborate. “Okay, so, it was the beginning of junior year and….”

**

Soobin deliberately dragged his feet toward the direction of his lockers, whiny and sluggish. Despite this being the literal first double lesson of maths, Soobin already wanted to bang his head onto the table. Maths can suck on a cactus for all he cares.

As Soobin continued through the hallway, a peculiar sound outside caught his attention. Intrigued, he peeked around the corner and noticed a familiar student in the courtyard.

Choi Yeonjun, also known as the rich, snobby kid who thought he was above everyone else in terms of status, grades and wealth. At least, that’s what his peers said about him.

Yeonjun was crouched on the ground in front of a bench, and he gently petted a stray cat that had somehow found its way on school grounds. A small smile was etched on his face, which only widened when the cat scrunched its eyes in happiness.

And when the adorable feline bit Yeonjun’s finger as a display of affection, he practically cooed and began speaking in a high-pitched voice often reserved for cute things, cats included.

‘This guy can’t be that bad. I mean, he likes cats, and that’s a massive green flag! I don’t get why people like to paint him out to be this snobby and stick-in-his-ass guy….’

Footsteps approached, alerting both Soobin and Yeonjun. Thinking quickly, Soobin ran towards the sound, deliberately bumped into the teacher and then fell dramatically onto his bottom.

“No running in the hallways!” The teacher boomed with a shake of his head. “I thought you knew better than this, Choi Soobin. You’re a junior now.”

“Sorry, sorry! I just saw this massive spider, and I got really scared,” Soobin lied easily, clasping his hands together apologetically to sell the act.

The teacher instantly tensed at the mention of an arachnid on the premises. “Oh, that certainly won’t do. I’ll inform the exterminator quickly. Thank you for telling me, Soobin.”

“No problem!”

The teacher turned on his heel and power-walked through the hallway, no doubt taking a detour to avoid the nonexistent spider.

Soobin sighed in relief before checking on the cat friend and Yeonjun. However, much to his disappointment, there was no sign of either.

‘Did he leave?’ Soobin wondered with a tilt of his head. ‘Aw…I wanted to talk to him for a bit. He seems cool.’ Then he shrugged. ‘Oh, well. I should get back to class.’

**

“Th-that was you?” Yeonjun asks in fascination.

Soobin nods proudly. “Yup! And then the next day in literature, I recognised you and sat next to you. It helped that we were in the same classes before. Badabing badaboom, we’re here.”

“What a lame way to stop the teacher,” Taehyun deadpans.

“I like how it’s all come full circle with the cat thing. Like, even in high school, you were caring for cats,” Beomgyu says.

At that moment, Yeonjun looks over to Kai, who bats his eyelashes and goes, “Hear that, Junnie? We’re fated.”

“What are you talking about? That’s not what he said at all.”

The five continue conversing, eliciting a warm feeling inside Yeonjun’s chest. Months ago, he couldn’t even fathom the idea of meeting with Soobin outside of their brief meeting on the train. Yet, here he is, talking with Soobin and his friends and hopefully allowing their two groups to merge.

Unfortunately, the telltale sound of a customer entering the cafe rings out through the establishment. Although disappointed, Yeonjun and Kai quickly put on their customer service smiles.

For the rest of Yeonjun’s workday, there always seemed to be a customer in the cafe, meaning that he couldn’t talk with Soobin as much. Despite that, Soobin, Beomgyu and Taehyun stay, play with the cats and chat with each other.

Though Yeonjun can’t help but sense as if the trio were watching him. It may just be paranoia, but he could’ve sworn that there were four instances where he made eye contact with Taehyun, and there were several times when he noticed Beomgyu mouthing his name.

Chalking it up to several coincidences, Yeonjun continues with his job until his shift is over.

“See you tomorrow, Yeonjun! And hopefully, I’ll see you all soon,” Kai smiles, waving eagerly before venturing to his living quarters upstairs.

The remaining four exit together, separating at the path outside.

“We’re going this way. See you, Soobin! Yeonjun-hyung!” Beomgyu says. Taehyun nods his head and smiles. The pair begin heading in the opposite direction of Yeonjun and Soobin.

“That was so fun! We should totally hang out again like that! I had no idea Kai liked anime as well,” Soobin gushes. “Could you send me his Instagram account? I’d love to talk to him more!”

A twinge of jealousy erupts in Yeonjun’s heart from the literal subject of his affections, asking for another person’s details.

So he chooses to focus on the first half of Soobin’s statement, replying with, “Yeah, I’d like for the five of us to hang out as a group.”

“For sure! I’ll see if I can organise something for us to do. Like, bowling or go-karting. Or even laser tag!”

“Make sure it’s nothing too extreme, okay? Kai and I will probably have work the next day.”

“I’ll try. But I won’t make any promises.”

Soon, they arrive at the train platform. Soobin sits down at his usual bench, looking up at Yeonjun with starry eyes as they talk.

The more time they spend together, the harder it is for Yeonjun to part with Soobin.

And so, once again, Yeonjun boards the train and stays so that he can remain by Soobin’s side for a few more minutes.

But the more time he spends with Soobin, his heart yearns for more. The more his mind begs him to say the words he’s wanted to say all this time. The simple yet sincere words that he desperately wants to tell Soobin.

Yet, once again, the words become trapped in his throat, and eventually, they crawl back into his heart.

The dreaded train announcement plays, effectively ending the magic between Yeonjun and Soobin.

“See you soon, Yeonjunie-hyung,” Soobin says as he rises from his seat.

“Yeah. Thanks for visiting. It honestly made my day,” Yeonjun sincerely replies.

Soobin’s smile is so magnificent that Yeonjun felt himself falling deeper in love.

After Soobin exits the train, the world slightly dulls to Yeonjun, and the sweetness in his chest becomes tainted by a bitter feeling.

At this rate, nothing will change between them. Yeonjun will continue to be the coward hiding behind several lies all because he can’t express his innermost feelings to the one he loves.

He’s the exact same coward he was back then.

**

Yeonjun walked past down the hallway, committing the sights and smells to memory. For what it’s worth, he had a decent time. Although he may not have lived his high school life to the fullest, he had no regrets.

And it was all thanks to a certain dimpled smile.

Yeonjun passed the classroom where he had literature, and noting that it was empty, he checked his surroundings before entering for one last time.

When his eyes landed on the desk next to where he usually sat, Yeonjun’s lips involuntarily curved into a small smile. He approached the desk and lightly traced his fingers on top of the words written at the corner of the table.

soobin was here >:3

Yeonjun rolled his eyes at the cliche phrase, but he couldn’t help but laugh. Of course, Soobin would write something like that.

The door to the classroom slid open, and a familiar voice called Yeonjun’s name, causing his heart to race.

“What a coincidence! What are you doing here?” Soobin asked.

“Oh…just…visiting here one more time,” Yeonjun replied as he leaned against his desk. He crossed his arms, hoping the action would somehow alleviate his racing heart. “What about you?”

“Same! I was checking out my old classrooms.” A few seconds passed before a mischievous smile took over Soobin’s face, and he admitted, “Actually, I’m here to leave this behind.”

‘This’ was apparently a miniature resin figure of a coloured duck.

“Of course,” Yeonjun deadpanned.

“Where do you think I should put this?” Soobin glanced around the classroom, squinting his eyes. “I wanna put it in, like, someplace so unexpected that whoever finds it can’t help but laugh.”

“Maybe under the teacher’s desk? Behind the table leg.”

Soobin clicked his finger with a grin. “Perfect.” He was about to place the figure there, but he stopped in his tracks and offered it to Soobin, asking, “Do you want to do the honours?”

“Sure,” Yeonjun replied, accepting the figurine. He made his way over to the desk and carefully positioned the duck so that one would have to look really close to find it.

“Perfect!” Soobin beamed.

His smile then became wistful as he said, “Man, I can’t believe we’re graduating already. It seems like yesterday that you and I were messing around in our lit class.”

“It’s more accurate to say that you were messing around. I was trying to get my work done,” Yeonjun corrected.

“But you joined me every time. That says a lot, Yeonjun-hyung.” Soobin hopped onto a desk and adjusted his position until he was safely sitting on the surface. “So, what are your plans after graduation?”

Yeonjun exhaled and then chuckled as he leaned back against a desk. “That’s a loaded question…might take a short break before I go job hunting. Then, hopefully, I can dance.”

“That sounds great! Wishing you all the best.” In a quieter voice, Soobin said, “I’m really proud of you for pursuing what you want to do.”

A fuzzy warmth filled Yeonjun’s chest, and he looked down at his feet, hoping Soobin wouldn’t see the stupid expression he was making. “Thanks, Soobin. What about you? What are you planning to do?”

“Well, I applied for an Early Childhood Education course at Bighit University, so hopefully, I’ll get in. Other than that, I have no clue.”

“Whatever you do, I’m sure you’ll be fine.”

“Thanks!”

Both of them sat in silence for a while, slowly coming to terms that next week, they wouldn’t have to come back to this class and look for stupid ways to entertain themselves.

While Soobin admired the view outside the window, Yeonjun drank in the sight of Soobin and his usual smile inside their shared literature classroom for one last time.

It was thanks to Soobin’s kindness that Yeonjun became a better version of himself.

It was thanks to his chaotic nature that Yeonjun experienced new sensations.

It was thanks to Soobin’s encouragement that Yeonjun finally stood up for himself against his parent’s wishes.

No matter how much time will pass, Yeonjun knew that Soobin would be irreplaceable within his memory.

Soobin glanced at his phone and clicked his tongue upon seeing the time. “I should get going. I wanna put these ducks in every class I’ve ever been in. It’s a part of my high school bucket list.” Soobin got down from the desk and smoothed out his crumpled shirt before sighing. “I guess this is the last time I’ll see you for a while?” He said with a tilt of his head.

‘No. I don’t want that, I— I don’t want to leave you. I love you.’

Yeonjun wished he said those words aloud.

Instead, what came out was, “Yeah. I guess this is goodbye.”

“Hopefully, we’ll meet again! See you, Yeonjun-hyung!”

As Soobin approached the exit, Yeonjun gathered all his courage and affection for Soobin and told him the words he wanted to convey the most.

“Thank you for everything, Soobin.”

Sighing, Yeonjun leans against the counter, watching as the cafe window slowly becomes covered in raindrops.

As expected, the gloomy weather makes it difficult for people to do things, including going to cat cafes. On the bright side, it’s the perfect opportunity for Yeonjun to review his ‘songs to listen to while it’s raining.’

After queueing up a series of songs (some of it may or may not be tracks from Soobin’s suggestion), Yeonjun searches for other ways to entertain himself, such as dancing randomly, watching the adorable cats roam around the glass room, or betting on a random raindrop and watching it have an intense race against its other peers on the window pane.

“I talked to my dad, and he said if nothing happens for the next thirty minutes, you can go home early,” Kai says as he returns from the kitchen.

“You sure?” Yeonjun asks.

“Yeah, man. I doubt anything exciting is going to happen anyway. I mean, it’s four o’clock on a Tuesday. The spiciest thing that would happen is one of the cats falling out of the cat tower, but—”

The door swings open, alarming both Yeonjun and Kai.

In a few seconds, Kai’s prediction is completely thrown out the window because standing in front of them, in a drenched jumper and damp hair, is Choi Soobin. Despite the shivers that rack his body, he still smiles at Yeonjun and Kai as if nothing’s wrong.

“Soobin?! What the hell?!” Yeonjun cries as he approaches the younger. His hands hover around Soobin’s person, unsure where to begin with this mess. “Why are you here?!”

Soobin has the audacity to smile shyly and say, “I, uh, wanted to see you…?” As if that isn’t enough, he ends his sentence with a small giggle. It almost makes Yeonjun forgive him.

Almost.

“You could’ve waited until it wasn’t raining? What were you thinking, leaving the house without an umbrella?!”

“I kind of wasn’t? Like, when I realised I had left my umbrella at home, I was already on the train here, so. Yeah. And it started raining harder when I got to the city.”

“Soobin! At this rate, you’ll get sick!”

“I’ll be f—” Soobin’s words are cut off by a loud sneeze ripping through his entire body.

“See?! W-we need to get you warmed up right now, I—”

“Yeah, so, um, my dad said you can go,” Kai remarks, no doubt with a smirk on his face.

Confused, Yeonjun turns to Kai and eloquently goes, “Wha?”

“Obviously, Soobin needs to be taken care of, and you’re more than willing to do just that.” Kai pushes Yeonjun towards Soobin and then pats his shoulders, continuing, “And so, my friend, I bid you farewell and good luck. Bye-bye ~!”

“Wait, Kai—!”

“You should give Soobin your jacket before he gets even colder.”

On that note, Kai bounces back to the counter.

Yeonjun remains frozen for a few more seconds before shaking his head in exasperation. But, more importantly….

“Soobin-ah,” Yeonjun calls, gaining the attention of said person. “I’ll grab my things, and then we’ll go, yeah?”

“Um…where are we going, exactly?” Soobin asks.

Yeonjun hesitates. Eventually, he settles on, “You’ll see.”

♡♡♡

Yeonjun unlocks the front door and leads Soobin inside, immediately ushering the younger one to the shower.

Usually, Yeonjun would be absolutely mortified at the idea of Soobin wearing his clothes. However, at the moment, Yeonjun’s brain is too focused on Soobin’s well-being to dare about such trivial matters.

“You can borrow my clothes. I’ll put them outside while you’re showering,” Yeonjun says as he leads Soobin to the bathroom.

“Um, are—are you sure?” Soobin asks. His eyes dart around wildly, scanning his surroundings. “I don’t wanna intrude or anything.”

“It’s okay. Don’t worry about it.”

Yeonjun smiles reassuringly, prompting the younger to return the sentiment. “Okay.”

While Soobin showers, Yeonjun prepares some tea, hoping the beverage will warm up the younger. He also turns on the heater and prepares some blankets, just in case.

But as he carries out these tasks, the small fear within his stomach grows until it threatens to swallow him whole. There’s no doubt that Soobin will be freaked out once he knows whose home this actually is. Not only that, but Yeonjun will then have to explain the whole reason he lied in the first place was due to his affection for Soobin, which is another whole can of worms.

However, deep down, he knows that he needs to tell the truth.

The water turns off, signalling that Soobin has finished taking his shower.

Yeonjun gulps. Time to face the music.

When Soobin exits the bathroom, Yeonjun’s heart malfunctions at the sight of the younger practically drowning in his warmest, oversized hoodie as he dries his hair with a towel.

“I, um, made you some tea,” Yeonjun says, pointing to the mug on the coffee table to divert Soobin’s attention away from his pitifully crimson face.

“Really? Thank you!” Soobin gushes as he moves to the couch.

“Feel free to use the blankets if you’re still cold.”

Soobin sighs blissfully as he wraps his hands around the mug. Then, he lifts it to his lips and hums in satisfaction after the warm liquid travels through his body. “It’s so good! I swear, you’re, like, some sort of barista god. Every drink you make is ten times more delicious.”

“Thanks,” Yeonjun replies as he sits beside Soobin on the couch.

As Soobin continues drinking, Yeonjun can tell that the other’s curiosity levels are rising each second. His eyes keep wandering around the apartment’s interior, and his lips are stuck in that pout he does when he’s inquiring about something.

Yeonjun gathers all of his courage and starts, “You’re, um, probably wondering whose apartment this is.”

Soobin remains silent, but he nods slightly.

“It’s, um, mine, actually.”

First, surprise. Then, confusion. Finally, realisation.

“But…you took the train with me,” Soobin says, almost in a whisper.

“The first time I saw you, I was going over to my parents’ house. I was in a horrible mood, but as soon as I saw you, I felt better right away. And when I found out that you took the train, I…I wanted an excuse to see you more.”

Soobin furrows his eyebrows as he gently places the mug back on the coffee table. “Wait, did you go to your parents’ house every time you took the train with me?!”

Soobin’s worry is so misplaced that Yeonjun can’t help but laugh despite his nervousness. “No, of course not. I would take the train back to my place after you got off.”

Soobin’s jaw drops to the ground. He searches Yeonjun’s face for an indication that the older one is telling some sort of joke, but when he finds only sincerity, he groans and slaps his forehead. “That’s so…stupid! Yeonjun-hyung, why would you do that?!”

“Because I like you.”

The words that have been bubbling within his chest ever since high school finally escape his lips, and Yeonjun has never felt better.

“Huh?! Wait….you like…me?! Wait, what?!” Soobin cries.

“Yeah. I do,” Yeonjun replies with a sincere smile. Now that the words have been said aloud, it’s so easy to repeat them again and again. And so, he finally tells Soobin those things he didn’t have the courage to say back then.

“Instead of writing me off, you saw me for who I am. And then you reached out. If it weren’t for you, I…I wouldn’t be the person I am. You taught me so many things and gave me so many valuable experiences. It’s…just you. You’re so special to me.”

Soobin covers his mouth with both hands, and his eyes fill with unshed tears.

“It’s okay if you don’t feel the same way. I just wanted to let you know how I felt.”

Yeonjun stands up and prepares to leave, but a tug on the back of his shirt causes him to freeze.

“Wait,” Soobin says, almost in a whisper. “I, um, I’m really happy right now.”

Yeonjun frowns, disbelieving his ears. “You are?”

Soobin hums in confirmation.

Slowly, Yeonjun tries to turn around, but Soobin squeaks and hides his face in Yeonjun’s back, effectively immobilising him. “Sorry! I’m just, like, kinda embarrassed right now. I don’t want you to see my face.”

A few seconds pass, and Soobin quietly continues, “I think I like you too.”

Yeonjun’s heart skips a beat. “You… think you like me?”

“I don’t know, but, like, I can’t stop thinking about you, and I keep wanting to see you. And I hate that I’m saying this aloud, but when I listen to love songs, I think of you.” With every word, Soobin tightens the fabric of Yeonjun’s shirt, and at the end of his confession, his voice shakes with fear.

Yeonjun processes Soobin’s words, and when it finally clicks, he turns around, much to Soobin’s mortification. The younger swiftly covers his face with his hands, but the red flush on his ears and neck betray his feelings.

Yeonjun’s expression softens as he asks, “Is it okay for me to see your face?”

Soobin nods.

Yeonjun carefully wraps his hands around Soobin’s wrists and pulls them away from his scarlet-red face.

“Hey.”

“Hi—!” Soobin’s reply is high-pitched and choked out, causing him to cringe. “Oh my god, I’m so embarrassing.”

Yeonjun lets out a small laugh from Soobin’s reply. “It’s okay, Soobin-ah. You’re okay.” Taking a deep breath, Yeonjun slips his hands into Soobin’s hands and squeezes them as he asks, “Do you want to go out with me?”

“Um!” Soobin switches his gaze between Yeonjun’s left and right eye. “Like, literally or romantic stylez?”

“Ideally, both.”

“Yes! Um…right now?”

“Maybe when the weather’s better, first.”

“Oh my god, yes! I would be so down!”

Excitement rushes through Yeonjun’s veins, and he nods eagerly, replying, “Okay!”

Soobin slightly moves his hands, reminding Yeonjun of their position. “Sorry about that,” he sheepishly says as he retracts his hands.

“It’s okay,” Soobin replies with a shy smile. After lowering his hands, Soobin starts fiddling with the sleeves of his (Yeonjun’s!) hoodie. He takes a deep breath before saying, “I think I should go home.”

Yeonjun goes to protest, but Soobin quickly adds, “Not because I’m uncomfortable or anything! I just think it’s best for me to go home and clear my head. Otherwise, I might get, like, overwhelmed if I stay.”

“You sure?” Yeonjun asks, scrunching his eyebrows with worry.

“I’m sure. And I still have your hoodie, so we kind of have to meet up….” Soobin’s words trail off, but the implications behind his message are clear.

“Okay. But as if I’m going to let you run out like that again.”

Without hesitation, Yeonjun finds his highest-quality umbrella and passes it to Soobin. The handle is strong, and the frame and canopy are designed to withstand many types of weather conditions, allowing it to be the perfect companion for Soobin’s journey home.

“Everything okay? You’re warm, right?” Yeonjun asks.

Soobin rolls his eyes in amusement. “Don’t worry! This is just a little rain, and I’ve been through worse. Plus, this hoodie is so warm. I don’t think I’ll even feel the cold.”

“I’ll text you, okay? Hope you make it back home safe.”

“Of course. See you, Yeonjunie-hyung.”

Soobin gives him one last dimpled smile before exiting his apartment. Yeonjun waits until Soobin’s footsteps have ventured past the hallway before he falls to his knees and screams in his hands.

Holy shit.

♡♡♡

“Sorry for the wait!” Soobin cries as soon as he hops off the train.

Yeonjun stands up and organises his belongings. “Don’t worry, I didn’t wait that long.”

When Yeonjun fully lays his eyes on Soobin, he has to remind himself to keep his mouth shut lest it drop open in awe.

Soobin is already so devastatingly handsome, but when wearing an outfit that compliments his body, Soobin is nothing short of ethereal. A long-sleeved white shirt and baggy jeans, completed with a black beanie, black-framed glasses and his usual crossbody bag.

“Oh! We’re kind of matching!” Soobin notes happily.

Yeonjun looks down at his striped, sky-blue shirt and navy trousers. “Yeah, I guess we are.”

“You look really good! I swear, you majored in some sort of fashion course because everything you wear looks so nice. Or maybe that’s just you, I don’t know.”

Yeonjun hides the red in his cheeks with the back of his hand. He clears his throat, and then, with a gesture of his head, he says, “Let’s go.”

“Let’s goooo!!” Soobin cheers as he watches all ten pins fall down. “I’m a god at bowling!”

“You’re surprisingly really good at this,” Yeonjun comments.

Soobin smugly smiles. “Thanks! You’re not so bad yourself.” As Yeonjun prepares to bowl, Soobin quietly adds, “You’re not as good as me, though, heh .”

Two seconds after that statement, Yeonjun gets a strike, making this his third one in a row.

“Ooh, we should spice things up!” Soobin suggests out of the blue.

Amused, Yeonjun asks, “What do you have in mind?”

“Umm…so, we have seven more rounds of this, right?”

“Yeah.”

“I was thinking that in each round, whoever downs the least pins gets a flick to the forehead.”

“That's certainly a way to spice things up.”

“So? What do you think?”

Yeonjun looks at the scoreboard for a few seconds before turning his gaze back to Soobin with a competitive glint in his eyes. “Sure.”

With every subsequent round, Soobin either gets a gutter ball or knocks down up to five pins, while Yeonjun always scores higher than a seven.

“God, what’s going on?!” Soobin cries when he gets yet another gutter ball. “I was so good earlier!”

“I guess that was beginner’s luck,” Yeonjun jokes. To add salt to the injury, Yeonjun gets another strike even with a sloppy throw.

“Never mind. Bowling is just rigged in your favour,” Soobin whines with a pout.

Yeonjun can only smile as he delivers a flick to Soobin’s forehead.

After completely obliterating Soobin at bowling, Yeonjun suggests they check out the arcade games next to the bowling alley.

And, of course, what’s an arcade without a basketball game?

“How are we going to play this?” Yeonjun asks, watching Soobin tap the card on the payment system.

“Easy! We’ll just take turns throwing the ball,” Soobin answers with a smile.

It turns out that ‘taking turns throwing the ball’ is easier said than done. If it isn’t already a struggle to actually grab a basketball in the first place, it’s infinitely worse when one person’s ball accidentally knocks against the other’s, effectively preventing each other from scoring.

While both of them sucked at the game, Soobin’s squeaky and boisterous laughter makes up for the loss they suffered.

“Look! There are Pokémons in this one!” Soobin cries excitedly, approaching the machine.

“You’re a fan?” Yeonjun asks as he watches Soobin line up the claw on top of a Charmander plushie.

“Not really, but Taehyun is a massive Pokémon nerd. He even does things like those challenge runs.”

It seems as if the higher-ups didn’t necessarily appreciate the diss on Taehyun, as the Charmander instantly falls from the claw’s grip with the smallest of movements.

“Well, too bad for him, then,” Soobin mumbles under his breath as he searches for a different game to play.

Yeonjun follows, not without stifling his laugh with his hand.

“So how this works is that the red icons show up, you hit the middle of the drum. When a small blue icon appears, you hit the side of the drum. Like so.” Soobin smacks the rim of the drum with the provided drumsticks as a demonstration.

Yeonjun mirrors the movement. “Okay, I think I got it.”

“If there’s a big icon, you do it with both sticks.” Grinning, Soobin swipes the game card on both sides of the system and goes, “I’ll tell you if there’s anything else you need to know. Okay, let’s start with YOASOBI Idol!”

To say that their attempt at the Taiko no Tatsujin arcade game is horrible is an understatement. Although it started off quite simple at first, the repetitive movement ended up causing their wrists to hurt. As if that wasn’t enough, Soobin thought it was a good idea to increase the difficulty level, resulting in more pain.

In the end, Soobin abandoned his own drum entirely and focused on hitting the blue notes for Yeonjun.

By the end of the third song, Soobin is doubled over and holding his stomach, guffawing his lungs out. Yeonjun isn’t faring much better, with several giggles spilling from his lips.

Amid their meal, Soobin gasps excitedly and taps Yeonjun’s arm, desperate to gain the other’s attention.

When Yeonjun looks up, Soobin goes to say something, but his small giggles rack his entire body, making it practically impossible for him to speak. Eventually, Soobin calms down enough to say, “Isn’t this pho-king delicious?”

“Oh my god, that was so bad. Even so, Yeonjun’s hands fly to cover his mouth in an attempt to stifle his laughter.

Taking this as a challenge, Soobin’s smile morphs into a mischievous smirk as he continues making stupid puns relating to the delicacy known as pho. All the while, Yeonjun hides behind his hands and shakes with laughter.

As Yeonjun and Soobin walk along the path covered with fallen leaves, Yeonjun belatedly realises that despite being on a date, he has yet to do anything romantic with Soobin. In fact, to the average outsider, they probably look like two chaps just having a bro hang out.

Yeonjun glances at Soobin, specifically at his hands dangling at his side.

‘It’s natural for two people on a date to hold hands, right? But the real question is whether Soobin considers this as a date or not. But with everything that happened, he would presumably see this as a “romantic stylez” date, right?’

Soobin’s facial expressions and demeanour certainly don’t help in this case — they’re the same as usual.

’Well, whatever. Like the famous Boo Seungkwan said. Fuck it, we ball. Although, now that I think about it, I highly doubt he actually said that. Point is, let’s fucking get it, I guess.’

And so, Yeonjun musters all of his courage to reach his hand out towards Soobin, but before he can fully wrap his hand around the younger’s, Soobin exclaims in excitement and runs off, much to Yeonjun’s disappointment.

However, the negative feeling quickly disappears, thanks to Soobin’s adorableness. He squats down and snaps a photo of the wildflowers growing on the sidewalk with a megawatt smile.

“Isn’t this so cute?!” He says as he looks up at Yeonjun. His eyes are practically sparkling with his wonder.

“Yeah,” Yeonjun replies. At this point, he doesn’t even try to hide the fondness of his smile. “You really like taking photos, huh?”

“Yup! A lot of people give me shit like, oh, why can’t you just live in the moment. To that, I say, frick off, mind your own business! Besides, I take photos to remember things. And it’s so fun to look back on, you know?”

Soobin goes to stand up but stumbles and falls on his bottom, eliciting a small chuckle from Yeonjun. At first, Soobin frowns and makes a displeased expression, but his facade cracks in a few seconds, and he laughs the situation off.

Yeonjun reaches out his hand for Soobin, which the other grabs. Yeonjun pulls Soobin up, but instead of breaking away, the younger one keeps their hands entwined and continues along the path.

As Yeonjun stares at their locked hands, his heart races from the fact that their hands seem to fit so well together, similar to that of a jigsaw puzzle.

‘Oh…maybe I was overthinking it. Things like this…it’ll come to us naturally. I have to give it time.’

Yeonjun shifts his hand and interlocks it with Soobin’s. When he looks back at Yeonjun in curiosity, the older grins, which in turn elicits a dimpled smile from Soobin.

The same smile that Yeonjun had fallen in love with all those years ago.
