Chapter Text

"You really shouldn't get too close to Haley," Elliot said without looking up from his novel.

I remained silent for a moment, thinking over his words while gazing out the window. "I understand your perspective, but there's more to her than you may realize from your view." I replied.

Elliot sighed and took off his glasses, swiveling to face me. "I'm just concerned that her personality won't mesh well with yours in the long run. You're such a caring girl, and from what I've seen, she seems pretty self-centered."

"You may have a point," I conceded. "But I also believe people can surprise you in good ways sometimes, I will think about it tho."

"All I'm saying is take care, farmer. I don't want to see you get hurt down the line." His tone was kind yet serious. "Someone like Leah shares your passions and seems like a healthier match overall."

"I will think about it," I said once more with a sigh, this time in a softer tone, as I turned my gaze back to the sea. I could hear Elliot pulling his chair back - no need to look, I knew he would go back to his novel.

My feet gently swayed back and forth in the crystal-clear water of the lake. Somehow, it helped calm my mind. After my conversation with Elliot, I made an excuse about needing to check something at the farm, but instead, I found myself here, soaking my feet in the serene forest lake as the sun began to set.

"Look what we have here, I thought you were with Elliot," a familiar voice reached my ears. I turned my head to see who it was and offered Leah a small smile.

"Yes, I was. But how did you know I was with him, Leah?" I asked, tilting my head curiously and shifting over on the small dock, silently inviting her to join me.

She walked over, took off her shoes, and sat down, dipping her feet in the water as well. "I asked Elliot to accompany me to Zuzu City for some art supplies, but he said he had plans with you today."

"So what's with the long face today?" Leah asked, kicking her feet gently in the water. "Not like you to be lookin' so down."

I glanced down at our feet swaying in the cool water, offering a small smile. "Elliot and I just talked is all, no big deal. I'll be back to my usual self tomorrow, promise."

She raised a playful eyebrow, not entirely convinced. "Uh huh. Well you know where to find me if you ever need another ear." She gave my shoulder a playful nudge and I met her gaze with a smile, which she returned. "For sure, I'll keep that in mind."

Between friends, some things were better left unsaid for now. The lake's peaceful atmosphere washed worries gently from mind and heart.

We sat relaxing in companionable silence for a while, listening to the peaceful sounds of the forest. A question had been on my mind, and I finally spoke it. "You mentioned needing art supplies. What are you working on these days?"

She glanced over at me appreciatively. "Lately I've been painting landscapes from different spots around the valley. This lake is quite inspiring with the sunset lighting up the trees."

Leah leaned back on her hands, gazing across the surface as the light danced upon it. "I was hoping to capture its beauty before summer ends.“

"You have to show me when you do it, I enjoy your art," I replied with an easy smile. We sat quietly together a while longer, absorbing nature's subtle tranquility as sunlight gave way to twilight upon the water. Too soon the colors faded, sky dimming into dusk.

Leah rose and slipped her shoes back on with a contented sigh. "I should get to the Saloon before it closes. You heading home?"

I nodded, wading from the cool depths and onto shore. "Time to check on the animals before night falls," I replied easily, shoes in hand.

We walked together through the deepening forest shadows, footsteps muted over fallen leaves. At the edge of her path, Leah turned to me with a smile. "Don't be a stranger, yeah? Take care on your way."

I returned her smile warmly. "You as well. Thanks for keeping me company - it really helped." With a final parting wave, we turned toward our separate destinations as stars began to wake above the darkening treeline. Nature's calm solace lingered, carrying me peacefully home under night's gentle cloak.

Back to the farm, I checked on my animals and crops. Smiled seeing the sunflowers were ready to pick tomorrow. Thinking of giving Haley a bouquet since they're her favorite.

I went to bed with my conversation with Elliot still on my mind, I really like Haley but I don’t know if she does too, also, Alex likes her too, it’s not like I can compete with him.

"Good morning Mrs. Evelyn!" I greeted the older woman warmly, bouquet in hand. "Have you seen Haley anywhere today?"

"What a lovely bundle of flowers," she noted with kind eyes. "Your crops look bountiful as always. Sadly I haven't seen Haley, but perhaps she's at Alex's ice cream stand."

Thanking Mrs. Evelyn for her help, I started down the path hoping to find Haley there. As the bridge came into view though, I paused. Even from a distance I spotted Haley laughing close with Alex over their treats.

Sensing their intimacy, I lingered in thought, replaying Elliot's words of caution in my mind. With a small sigh, I turned back up the sunny lane, bouquet still held gently. Upon reaching Mrs. Evelyn once more, I offered the flowers with a small smile. “These may brings you more joy it seems”

"Isn't that sweet of you?" she chuckled. "George could learn manners from you, my girl." I grinned, deciding the mines may clear my head better than wandering town alone. Nature has a way of easing even the heaviest of thoughts.

Chapter 2: Confused

Chapter Text

As I made my way to the mines, that scene kept replaying in my mind over and over again. I thought she didn't like Alex, but a part of me wanted to ask her about it. However, I couldn't stop overthinking.

Once inside the mines, I started to mine stones and ores, battling the monsters that came at me. Unfortunately, some of them managed to hit me when I was lost in my thoughts.

I spent the entire day in the mines and returned home after midnight. I was so exhausted that I didn't even check on the animals or crops. I headed straight for a shower.

Afterwards, I crawled into bed and contemplated today's events. Maybe I should seek advice from Elliot tomorrow. I need someone's opinion on this.

"I don't know what to think," I said, throwing myself onto Elliot's bed and staring at the ceiling while he sat at his desk, writing his novel. "Don't you ever get tired of writing?" I asked, shifting onto my side to get a better view of him.

"You never get tired when you do what you love. You should know that well, farmer," he replied, earning an eye roll from me. I rolled onto my back again. "I need advice, Elliot. I don't know what to do."

He remained silent for a few seconds, and the only sound in the room was the feather scratching against the paper. "I've already told you. You should create some distance between the two of you," he finally answered.

"But I can't just do that," I protested. "I know Alex likes her, but I'm not sure if she sees him as just a friend."

"Then go and ask her," he suggested. I rolled my eyes at his response. "That's too obvious. If I do that, she'll wonder why I'm asking. She's not that oblivious," I explained, feeling frustrated.

Silence filled the room as Elliot stopped writing, contemplating the situation. After a while, he spoke again. "Well, in that case, why don't you ask Emily for help? Maybe she can inquire on your behalf," he suggested.

I pondered his suggestion for a few moments, actually considering the idea. "She doesn't get along well with Emily, but I'll give it a try. Thanks, Elliot," I said, getting up from his bed and making my way out of his house. I faintly heard him saying something, but I didn't catch it.

"I need your help," I said as I took a seat at the counter of the saloon, facing Emily. "Nice to see you too, farmer," she responded with a laugh, causing me to feel a bit embarrassed by my directness.

I quickly apologized, and she waved it off, urging me to continue. "Do you happen to know if Haley has feelings for Alex? Like, romantically?" I whispered, not wanting our conversation to be overheard.

"I can't help you much with that. You know Haley and I don't get along very well," she replied, fulfilling my expectations. "Besides, why don't you just ask her directly? You two are close, aren't you?"

I looked away, pursing my lips, and muttered, "I'm not sure if we're still close. She's been a bit distant." I glanced back at Emily. "If I go and ask her directly, she'll suspect something. But if you do it, you can come up with a more credible excuse. Please, Emily."

She pondered my request for a few minutes, and when I saw her sigh, I knew she had made a decision. "Fine, but I expect a lot of gemstones under my pillow after this," she demanded, half-jokingly. I leaned over the counter, hugged her, and smiled widely. "Anything you want!"

With that resolved, I decided to spend some more time at the saloon and headed over to the arcade machines, where I found Abigail. "Mind if I join?" I asked, giving her a smile as she glanced at me. "No need to ask. I can't seem to beat this game," she complained, and I stood by her side, ready to play.

After a while, we reached the last level of the game but unfortunately lost. "Darn it!" she exclaimed, and I let out a sigh. "Maybe next time. At least we had fun," I tried to cheer her up, stretching my arms.

Glancing at the time on my phone, I realized it was getting late, and I needed to return to the farm. "It's getting late. I'm heading home. See you, Abi," I bid her farewell, and she said her goodbyes as well. I left the saloon and began walking back to the farm.

I sat on the porch stairs, gazing at the sunflowers that had bloomed. I had planted so many of them because they were Haley'sfavorites, but right now, looking at them only added to my confusion.

Shifting my gaze to the stars in the night sky, I pondered everything once again. Elliot's words weighed heavily on my mind with each passing second. Even if Haley were to say she likes Alex, I wouldn't believe her. I know deep down that she only sees him as a friend. But if she were to say otherwise, I have no idea how I would react.

As much as I have feelings for her, I lack the courage to confess. I don't want to risk breaking our friendship in that way. I let out a sigh and looked down at my feet. Maybe Elliot was right.

I got up from the stairs and went inside, heading straight to bed, determined not to dwell on these thoughts any longer tonight.

Chapter 3: Happy?

Chapter Text

It was midnight when I finally made it back home from the saloon. I let out a sigh of relief as I plopped down on the sofa, grateful to be off my feet. As I glanced at Haley's door, thoughts of the favor the farmer had asked me swirled in my mind, causing me to sigh once again.

"Come on, Emily, you promised you'd give it a shot," I muttered to myself, trying to motivate myself. I mustered up the energy to get off the sofa and walked towards Haley's door. I knocked and waited for a response.

"What do you want?" Haley's voice sounded annoyed, but at least she answered. I rolled my eyes and replied, "Can I come in? I just need to ask you something." I stood there for what felt like an eternity until I finally heard the creak of the door and saw her standing there.

"You better make it quick," she said, entering her room and sitting on her bed. I took a deep breath, trying to gather the courage to talk without regretting this favor. "So, umm, has anyone caught your eye lately? You've been spending a lot of time with the farmer, right?" I tried my best to sound casual, but her expression told me I wasn't convincing.

"We're nothing. I would never date a filthy farmer," she said dismissively. I smiled uncomfortably, unsure of how to respond. "But you two was very close. What happened?" It felt strange to hear her say such things, especially after hearing her speak highly of the farmer in the past.

"I just got bored, that's all. Now, why are you asking me these things? And don't you dare say 'I was curious,'" she retorted. I didn't believe her words, but I decided to come up with an excuse to answer her question. "It's just that you and Alex have been spending more time together, so I wanted to know what the farmer..." I trailed off, smiling nervously while trying to maintain a casual demeanor.

"Alex and I have always been close," i sigh knowing she’s just playing dumb at me "You know the kind of closeness I'm talking about, and you know why I'm saying that." It wasn't a secret that Alex had feelings for Haley.

She stared at me for a few seconds before rolling her eyes. "Let's just say I'll believe that horrible excuse, Emily, only because I want you out of my room already." Another sigh come out of me hearing that response and got up from her bed, heading towards the door. "Fine, fine. Thanks for at least opening the door," I muttered, rolling my eyes. Before leaving the room, I turned back to look at Haley.

"Just so you know, I don't believe your words either. I know there's something else going on, but I also know you're not going to tell me. Just... please don't break her heart, Haley. She loves you... a lot." With that, I left her room, closing the door slowly. I let out one final sigh, releasing the tension from my body, and made my way back to my room. I knew she would think about what I had said.

The next morning, as I sat on the sofa sipping my morning tea, I watched Haley leave the house, all dressed up. "Going to see Alex?" I asked, even though I already knew the answer. She didn't even bother to look back or respond with a snarky remark. She simply opened the door and left. "At least bring me an ice cream!" I called out, half-jokingly.

I sat on the sofa, sipping my tea, lost in thought as I reflected on the events of the previous night. I hoped that my words had resonated with Haley, but only time would reveal the truth. Finishing my tea, I couldn't help but wonder what would transpire between Haley and the farmer.

A few hours later, I was engrossed in my sewing when I heard the front door swing open. Haley walked in, her expression inscrutable. She glanced in my direction but remained silent, heading straight to her room.

After a while, she come out and finally broke the silence. "Alex asked me to be his girlfriend," she murmured softly, her voice tinged with a mix of discomfort and uncertainty. I looked up from my sewing and met her gaze.

"And what did you say?" I asked gently, trying not to let my anxiety show.

Haley let out a sigh and sat down at the dining table. "I said yes," she replied, surprising me. However, she didn't appear particularly enthusiastic about it, leaving me feeling confused.

"Well, you don't seem happy about it. Are you sure about your answer?" I began, but before I could finish my sentence, she interrupted, her gaze fixed on the table. "I am!... I am very happy about it. I love him," she responded abruptly, catching me off guard with her reaction. She had never acted like this before.

"Haley..." I started to say, but she cut me off abruptly. "Shut up! I don't want to hear it," she snapped, already closing the door to her room before I could utter another word.

I sat there, feeling unsure of what to do or say next. I knew I had to head to the saloon soon, but my mind was consumed with the question of whether I should tell the farmer about Haley's response. I couldn't help but think that revealing the truth would undoubtedly break his heart. It was a difficult decision to make, and I weighed the consequences in my mind.

I sigh and decided to let it be, I don’t want to be the one who breaks her heart but I hope Haley decides to tell her soon.

Chapter 4: Dance of the Moonlight Jellies

Chapter Text

"So, what do you think? Do you like it, farmer?" I was left speechless as I looked at Leah's painting. When she asked me to come to her cabin to see her finished piece, I wasn't expecting something this incredible.

"I don't have words, Leah. This is absolutely gorgeous, and you've really captured the essence of the lake," I said, touching the paint gently as I admired it. Leah always does an amazing job.

"Aw, thanks! I thought I wouldn't finish before summer ended, but here I am, on the last day of summer, with it completed," she laughed at her own words, and I couldn't help but join her. She looked so beautiful when she laughed.

"Speaking of which, do you have someone to go see the Dance of the Moonlight Jellies tonight, farmer?" Her question caught me off guard, leaving me deep in thought.

Ever since I found out about the event at the beginning of summer, I had been planning to ask Haley to go see the jellies with me. I even had plans to ask her with a bouquet of sunflowers. But now, those plans were out the window. I had tried so many times to talk to her this past week since I asked Emily for help, but she just kept avoiding me.

"Well, not really. Why do you ask?" I inquired, curious. As I spoke, I watched Leah put the painting with her others.

"I was hoping you could come with Elliot and me to see it. It's more enjoyable with friends than being alone, don't you think?" she proposed.

"Of course it is! Count me in," I replied, spending a few more hours with Leah until I decided to leave and finish some chores on the farm before nightfall. I stepped out of Leah's house and froze in my tracks when I saw that familiar blonde hair. I would recognize it anywhere.

She had her back to me, so she didn't notice my presence. I stood in silence for a few minutes, watching her take photos of the forest with her camera. Finally, I decided to speak up loud enough for her to hear me.

"Enjoying the view?" I asked, trying to sound casual.

She stopped taking photos, and a tense atmosphere filled the air between us. Still, she didn't turn around. "Want me to take a photo for you, like we used to do...?" I said and look her starting to walk away from me but I stepped closer and grabbed her arm gently, not wanting her to leave.

"Don't go... please, Haley. Just talk to me... Tell me what I did wrong for you to become so distant. At least look me in the face," I pleaded, my voice tinged with a hint of desperation despite my attempts to remain calm.

Silence reigned between us, only broken by the sound of the wind and the animals around us. I didn't release my grip on her arm, afraid that if I let go, she would run away.

"I have something to do. Let me go," she responded, trying to break free from my grip. I wouldn't let go, fearing that if I did, she would run away.

"Please don't lie to me. If I did something wrong, just tell me, and I'll try to fix it. Or tell me why you're avoiding me because it hurts me. If you don't want us to be friends anymore, we won't, but give me a reason." Desperation seeped into my voice, though I attempted to remain calm.

Silence hung heavy between us. Only the sound of the wind and the animals filled the void. I didn't let go of her arm, afraid of what might happen if I did.

"Let me go. I'm going to see Alex," she finally uttered. Her words stung, and I tightened my grip slightly, feeling a twinge of jealousy. Why did it have to be his name that escaped her lips?

"Alex... Are you two dating or something?" I struggled to maintain my composure, looking down at the ground beneath us. "What if we are? It's the right thing to do, after all," she replied, her tone filled with a hint of bitterness.

"The right thing? What do you mean by that?" My frown deepened as I asked, not wanting to believe what I suspected.

"You know what I mean. Two girls dating each other. What do you think people will say? What will my parents think? I'm doing the right thing by dating Alex, even if..." She trailed off, but I was already growing angry.

"I don't care about what other people think. Your opinion is the only one that matters to me, because I love you!" I released my grip on her arm, finding it difficult to remain calm at this point. The question of why kept echoing in my mind. I thought she felt the same way about me... Was all the time we spent together meaningless? "Even if what? What, Haley?!"

"Even if I'm forcing myself to love him! I started dating him cause I know it’s the right" Her admission shocked me, and I could see a trace of sadness in her eyes. "it’s just the way I’m, I love you, I really do but I can’t love the same way you love me." Silence descended upon us once more, but after a few seconds, I broke it.

"Haley..." I reached out to grab her hand, but she pulled back. "Let's just leave it here. See you at the Moonlight Jellies event tonight." With that, Haley turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, feeling a mix of heartbreak and confusion.

I wanted to go after her, but my feet refused to move. I watched her fade into the distance, feeling lost. After a few minutes of standing there, I made my way back to the farm. I had told Leah that I would see the Moonlight Jellies with her and Elliot tonight.

Night fell, and we gathered near Elliot's cabin, waiting for the jellies. I kept my hands in my hoodie, gazing at the ocean in front of us as Leah and Elliot engaged in conversation. My mind was still consumed by my conversation with Haley.

Lost in my thoughts, I glanced around and spotted Haley on the dock, talking to Alex. I stared at her for a few minutes, feeling a mix of jealousy and sadness as I watched them together.

“I can guess that something happened between you two, mind me to ask?” I gaze back at the ocean now feeling two pair of eyes on me and I wasn’t in the mood to talk about it right now

“I don’t wanna talk right now, maybe in other moment” I feel Elliot’s hand in my shoulder and somehow that makes me feel a bit better

“Let’s just enjoy the night, I can’t wait to see the jellies, I will love to make a paint about them” I smile at Leah words and we keep talking until it was time for mayor Lewis to light the torch.

The jellies start to come and I was stunning seeing they’re beauty, I couldn’t stop myself to up my gaze where Haley was and feel a bit jealous and sad looking Alex hugging her. Suddenly I felt a hand on mine, bringing my attention back. I looked back to find Leah smiling at me, and I returned the smile. We both turned our gaze back to the jellies, a smile on our faces.

The festival came to an end, and we said our goodbyes to Elliot. I offered to walk Leah home, and we strolled under the moonlight, our hands still intertwined. It brought me a sense of comfort.

"See you around, Leah," I said when we reached her house, feeling the touch of her hand slip away.

"Have a good night, farmer," she replied. I headed back to the farm after she closed her door, the events of the day replaying in my mind. A wave of emotions washed over me all at once.

Once back at the farm, I headed straight to bed, too tired to do anything else and not wanting to dwell on anything untilmorning; knowing that when I wake up a new season will have arrived.

Chapter 5: Elliot’s birthday

Chapter Text

“I told you, I told you so many times” the first words that go out of Elliot’s mouth when I finish telling what happened between Haley and I

“So good that you’re my friend, eh Elliot?” I roll my eyes and lay on my back in his bed, looking at the ceiling “but…maybe you were right” a melancholic tone in my voice, one that Elliot notice quickly

"Hear me out, farmer." turns his chair to face me fully "I know it hurts, and I'm really sorry you're going through this. Haley is clearly struggling with some stuff, and it's putting you in the middle. But you can't make her love you the way you love her. At the end of the day, you have to look out for yourself too."

“I know that but I still want to keep looking out for her, maybe I can change her mind about what other people will think, that I will be by her side always…” now sitting in the bed sighing, I know I can’t change her mind but I don’t want to give up on her still

Elliot get up from the chair and come closer to me and place a hand on my hair messing it "My advice? Don't keep pushing her on this. Give her space, let her figure out her own feelings. And in the meantime, don't close yourself off to other possibilities. There are plenty of people out there. Leah, for example, seems like she’s into you, I saw how she looked at you on the moonlight jellies festival."

Leah…I’ve been spending more time with her certainly but, I never had to think about dating her.

I pondered his words for a moment, my mind replaying the serene evening by the lake with Leah. Her genuine smile and warm presence had been a balm to my troubled thoughts. "Maybe," I replied slowly. "But my heart is still tangled with Haley. It's hard to just switch feelings."

Elliot nodded thoughtfully, sitting back down in his chair. "I get it. Love isn't something you can just turn on and off. But just keep an open mind. Sometimes, the person we need is right in front of us, but we can't see them because we're too focused on someone else."

I sighed, knowing he was right. "I'll try. Thanks, Elliot." I get up from his bed and head to the door, feeling a bit lighter after our conversation. “I remember I have something to do, see ya Elliot”

He waved at me and I close the door, heading to Leah’s cabin cause I almost forget about our plans for Elliot surprise birthday party.

"Happy birthday!!" Leah and I yell in unison as the cabin door swings open, startling Elliot. We quickly pull the cord on the confetti poppers, sending a colorful explosion of paper bits raining down all over him.

Our laughter fills the cozy cabin as we watch Elliot stand there, confetti sticking to his hair and clothes. "At first we thought about getting a normal cake from the city, but we decided to do something a little more original for your special day," I say, guiding Elliot towards his desk where a plate of his favorite crab cakes sits, topped with flickering candles.

Leah grins and nudges him playfully. "Come on, make a wish and blow out the candles!" she says eagerly, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

Elliot looks touched, a warm smile spreading across his face. "I don't know what to say - I really wasn't expecting this. You two are the best," he says softly, taking a moment to survey the festive scene before leaning in and extinguishing the candles with a single decisive blow.

As the last flame gutters out, we all cheer and move in for a group hug, the sound of our laughter and congratulations filling the cozy cabin on this special occasion.

After the group hug, we all step back to admire the crab cakes.

"Alright, birthday boy, time to dig in!" I say, grabbing a plate and handing it to Elliot. "We made sure to get your favorite - freshly caught and cooked to perfection."

Elliot takes the plate, his eyes lighting up. "You really shouldn't have gone to all this trouble, you two," he says, though the smile on his face makes it clear he's deeply touched by the gesture.

Leah waves a hand dismissively. "Nonsense! It's your birthday, Elliot. You deserve to be spoiled a little," she says, grabbing a plate for herself and taking a seat on the edge of Elliot's desk.

I nod in agreement, grabbing my own plate of crab cakes and joining Leah. "Yeah, consider it a small token of our appreciation for everything you do. You work so hard, you need to take time to celebrate and enjoy yourself once in a while," I say, taking a bite and letting out a satisfied hum. "And these are absolutely delicious, by the way."

Elliot chuckles and takes a bite of his own cake, his eyes widening in delight. "You two really outdid yourselves," he says, savoring the flavors. "This is amazing."

We all fall into a comfortable silence as we enjoy the crab cakes, the crackle of the dying embers in the fireplace and the soft music playing in the background creating a cozy, celebratory atmosphere. Every so often, Elliot looks up at us with a grateful, almost awestruck expression, clearly touched by the thoughtfulness of our surprise.

After a few hours of pleasant conversation, night falls and we bid farewell to Elliot. Now walking Leah to her cabin, the moonlight rises and our steps crunch on the fallen leaves, breaking the quiet silence.

"I had a great time today. My favorite part was when we cooked the crab cakes together. We should do that again," Leah says, a small smile on her face.

"Absolutely, I enjoyed that too," I respond, gazing ahead down the path. As we pass by Haley's house, I can't help but glance over, feeling a pang in my chest and slowing my steps.

Leah reaches out and takes my hand, guiding me forward. "Come on, it's getting chilly." I apologize, and she dismisses it with a wave of her free hand.

A few more minutes of walking, and we reach her cabin. Instead of saying goodbye, we decide to linger on the dock by the lake. The silence between us is comfortable, no words necessary.

After a moment, I feel Leah's head come to rest on my shoulder. I give her hand a gentle squeeze in response.

"I like this," she murmurs.
"Me too," I whisper back, resting my head against hers and watching the moonlight reflect on the water, savoring the warmth of her presence.

Reluctantly, I decide it's time to head back to the farm, lifting my head and releasing her hand. "Goodnight, Leah," I say with a smile.
"See you around, farmer," she replies.

With that I started walking back to the farm, already missing the warm embrace of Leah’s body but shaking my head to not think about it.

Chapter 6: Autumn’s fair

Chapter Text

It's not even winter, but the weather is feeling cold already. Today is the autumn fair, and the atmosphere is already noisy. I was sitting on a bench near Gus' stand and couldn't stop the frown on my face seeing Alex as I hadn't in a long time.

"Alex! Can you stop eating like you're starving? Look at your mouth, it's so messy." I roll my eyes with a sigh, my chin in my hand.

I would rather be anywhere else, but I'm here because I was tired of him asking me every second to come with him to the fair.

"Mmph, sorry babe, it's just that this burger is so good," his mouth was full of food and dirty from the sauces. I make a look of disgust, getting up from the bench.

"Ugh! Eat first and talk later, how disgusting." I walk away from that place, looking around the other stands and the people that came from the city for the fair.

Walking around, I found myself looking at a certain stand, the farmer's stand that was being set up. Leah was there, talking and looking so happy. I feel frustrated looking at her smile and seeing them so close; it makes me mad that it was the same way she looked at me when we were together. Why do I feel like that?

"What's with that face? You look pissed, is it Alex's fault?" There was the familiar voice of Emily, who came closer.

"It's none of your business, Emily, and I don't want to talk about Alex right now," the frown on my face being notable.

"So good that you're not mad," the sarcasm in her voice making me roll my eyes and look at her. "Well, if you don't want to talk about him, why don't you tell me why you're staring at the farmer; I thought you didn't talk to her anymore."

Her last words make my heart ache a bit, remembering that, but I dismiss it quickly. "I wasn't staring at her, I was looking at her stand, that's all. Or can't I do that? Also, yeah, we don't talk anymore. I want her out of my life."

The words came out of my mouth, but why do I feel bad about it? It's the truth, I want her out of my life; I have Alex now.

"I never said you can't, we both know what you were really looking at, but if you want to believe that, keep repeating it until you believe it."

"By the way, I saw Alex looking for you a few minutes ago. You should go with him."

A grimace takes place on my face, not wanting to go back with Alex, and I hear Emily's laugh, knowing that she was laughing at my face.

"I didn't know I was a clown." Now it was her turn to roll her eyes at me. "I guess I have to go back with him, see you at home." I wave goodbye to her and walk around to find Alex, taking my time with it.

"Haley! There you are, I was looking for you. Sorry for making you mad earlier." I make a dismissive gesture with my hand, saying that it's okay.

"Let's go see the games, there's a lot we should try. Come on!" He takes my hand in his and starts walking around as he animatedly describes the various games we should try. I force a smile and nod along.

We went to all the attractions, and now we're at the Smashing Stone because Alex wanted to prove his strength. I wasn't giving him too much attention and looked around.

My gaze fell on the farmer's stand, and she was there with Elliot and Leah. The same feeling from earlier was there, but it wasn't anger anymore; it was more like sadness.

I don't know if she felt my gaze, but her head turned in my direction, and I looked around quickly, feeling embarrassed, not wanting to be caught.

"Haley, you okay?" Alex's concerned voice pulled me from my thoughts.

"Hm? Oh, yes, I'm fine," I replied, mustering up a more convincing smile. "I was just looking at the stands."

He came closer to me after finishing with the Smashing Machine. "Speaking of that, did you see that the farmer put some purple shorts in her stand earlier this morning?"

A confused expression comes to my face after hearing that. "Purple shorts? No, I didn't see it."

"It was so funny, Mayor Lewis was mad at her and took it away. I think it was his because he was so embarrassed." Laughs were coming out of his mouth, and I join, imagining the scene in my head.

"That's so crazy, so bad I didn't see it." Alex was going to say something else, but Mayor Lewis did it first, saying that the Grange Display contest was starting.

Everybody comes closer to hear who the winner is. Mayor Lewis walked around every stand, and I couldn't take my gaze away from the nervous look on the farmer's face when the Mayor was at her stand.

A pang of something climbed to me when I see that she was grabbing Leah's hand. I narrowed my eyes and sighed, looking away. I hate seeing them so close.

I felt Alex's eyes on me, so I force a more neutral expression to avoid his questions. After a few minutes, the Mayor walked to the center of the town square and announced the winner of the contest.

"I'm glad to announce that the winner of this year's is none other than... the farmer!" Claps coukd be heard after the announcement, and I couldn't stop the smile that climbed to my face.

Looking in her direction, I could see Elliot and Leah hugging her. My heart ached a bit, and my smile turns into a sad one. I want to hug her and tell her that I was happy for her, but I can't. I cut her out of my life...

The fair will end in a few more hours, but I was already tired of being there. "I'm heading home, I'm tired of being around unfashionable people."

"Eh? No, wait- Haley!" I didn't stop to hear him, and I just turned around and walked to my house. I feel like a mess right now.

Back in my room, I try to distract my mind from the fair and use my phone, but that didn't work because five minutes later, I was in my photo roll, looking at old photos of the farmer and me.

With a sigh, I throw my phone on the bed and lay there, looking at the ceiling. I can't feel like that; we don't talk anymore, I have Alex now, and I'm happy with that.

After a few hours, I hear knocks on my door and Emily's voice behind them. With a sigh, I sit back on the bed and tell her to come in.

"Hey, what happened out there? I saw you walking away as soon as the contest ended. Did you and Alex discuss again?"

She takes a seat on the edge of my bed and I look at her. "Alex has nothing to do with this, I was just tired of the fair, that's all."

"So it's the farmer, right? You spent the whole fair looking at her."

"It's none of your business, Emily, and I wasn't looking at her," my words are cut off when she speaks again. "Yeah, yeah, you were looking at her stand, keep lying to yourself."

I roll my eyes at her words, which anger me for some reason. "You need to start being more honest about how you feel, seriously, you're going to lose her completely if you keep this up."

"Don't talk like you know how I feel, I don't need your advice, I know what I'm doing."

"Yeah, right," her voice is full of sarcasm. "Stop lying to yourself, we both know who you really like, or are you going to say that the angry gaze you gave to the farmer and Leah when I found you early meants nothing?"

"I wasn't looking at her!" I yell angrily, even though it's true. "I don't give a damn what the farmer does with her life, I don't care if she starts loving someone else and forgets about me, or even if I regret every single choice I make."

"I'm dating Alex, not her, I'm happy with how my life is right now, really happy!. I don't like girls like you do, I don't want to disappoint mom and dad like you did."

My eyes widen when I hear what I said, I didn't want to say that and the look on Emily's face makes me feel even worse.

She gets up from my bed and I go to grab her arm. "Wait, Emily! I didn't mean to say that, I was just angry, you know..." She pulls her arm out of my reach.

"And I was just trying to open your eyes before it's too late and you regret it, don't come crying to me when you face the consequences of your choices." She heads for the door of my room and I get up to follow her.

"Emily... I'm really sorry."

She turns around with her hand on the doorknob to face me.

"I'm not the only one who needs to hear your apologies, goodnight Haley."

The click of the door indicates that I've been left alone again in my room, a hurricane of emotions hitting me and I just scream, grabbing the first thing I find in my way and throwing it at the door.

It was a picture frame, pieces of glass in front of the door and a photo of the farmer and me when she found me taking photos of the cows on Marnie's farm, now also on the floor.

My hands find their way to my face, feeling the tears running down my cheeks, and I lie on my bed, hating the way I am.

A question in my head that I can't find the answer to: am I really following the right path?

I spend the whole night crying until i fell asleep, thinking about everything in my life.

Chapter 7: Picnic date

Chapter Text

I take my hat off of my head and clean the sweat of my head with my arm. it´s been a cold autumn but working in the farm takes it away.

Sitting in the stairs of the porch, looking at all the crops with a smile in my face, proud of the big change I did to this farm in this year. I spent the whole morning doing everything and now I can finally take a rest.

It’s been a week since the autumn’s fair and I still can’t believe I won; that night Leah and Elliot took me to the saloon and we celebrate in laughs and beers, was a great night.

Looking around my gaze stopped in the sunflowers and the reason they’re there in the first place, making my expression down a bit. Since the day I confronted Haley I haven’t move them from that place, even if I need space for others crops I refused to do it.

Somehow I feel like if I cut them I will close that chapter and my brain want that, my brain need rest of all that drama. But my heart ache every time I remember her or see her with Alex and it’s the same with the sunflowers.

Even if I don’t want to do it I will have to, winter will come soon and all the crops are going to die and with them, my love for her will do it too.

“Enough Haley for today” I say for myself and get up, going into the house to clean myself, I have plans with Leah today and I was excited for that.

After a quick shower, I throw on some comfy clothes, no thinking too much about the outfit. Leah and I had planned a picnic by the lake, a perfect way to spend the afternoon.

I grab the basket I prepared earlier before working in the farm, filled with sandwiches, fresh fruit, and a bottle of Leah’s favorite wine. As I head out the door, I take one last glance at the sunflowers. They sway gently in the breeze, a poignant reminder of past feelings and unspoken words.

Shaking off the melancholy, I focus on the present. Leah's waiting for me, and I won’t let thoughts of Haley overshadow the good times I have with her. I walk down the porch steps, feeling the crunch of fallen leaves under my boots. The crisp autumn air fills my lungs as I make my way to the lake.

When I arrive, Leah is already there, setting up a blanket under the shade of a large oak tree. She looks up and smiles, her eyes sparkling with warmth.

"Hey there," she calls out, waving. "Perfect timing” she was smiling but something feel wrong with that smile

"Always on time," I take a seat on the blanket and place the basket between us, looking at the view of the lake in front of us. "I love this view so much."

"I do too. I've started a new painting and it's just like the one I did in the summer, I want to do one for each season," she says, pulling her legs up to her chest and also looking at the lake.

Her expression and tone of voice were so... melancholic, difficult to put into words.

"Are you okay, Leah? You seem a bit down today," I say, shifting my gaze to her face to see her better.

I see the hesitation in her face and how she bites her lips, maybe I shouldn't have asked that.

"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to," I say.

"It's okay, I want to tell you," those words make me feel less guilty for asking. "My ex called me early, she was telling me to go back to the city."

I feel a knot in my stomach upon hearing those words. A long time ago she told me she had an ex, but she just said they didn't end well. But the mere thought of Leah going back to the city saddens me, the idea of her leaving makes my heart ache.

"I never told you the story, so in short: we lived together in the city, we spent day and night working and money was always tight, so she told me to go back to university and study something like business or medicine."

She paused for a few seconds and then continued, her sad gaze fixed on the water of the lake.

"I guess she wanted us to save up for a normal life... but I wasn't ready for that kind of life, so I came here to pursue my dream of being an artist. Do you think I was selfish?"

"No, it had to be done," I respond quickly, seeing a small smile appear on her face, which makes me feel more at ease.

"You're right... I wouldn't have been happy there. It was better for both of us," she says, looking back at me, and seeing her smile makes me smile too.

"Well, changing the subject, I've been saving money to buy a computer and sell my art online, like you suggested to me once," I say, even forgetting that I had suggested that to her long ago, when she told me about her bills. "Oh, so you're really going to do it, I'm so glad to hear that!"

The rest of the day passed quickly in talks and laughter; spending time with Leah was always the best plan. Night fell, and now we are lying on the blanket, looking up at the star-filled sky.

I feel Leah’s head resting on my shoulder, and heat rises to my face, thankful for the darkness so she won’t see it. I hesitate for a few long moments because I want to hold her hand in mine.

After overthinking it for too long, I finally gather the courage and do it, feeling the warmth of her body even more now.

Trying to break the silence, I murmur softly, just loud enough for her to hear, "The sky is pretty tonight, don’t you think?"

"It truly is," her voice came out in the same tone as mine. I turn my head to the side to look at her and find that she is already looking at me.

Our eyes meet, and for an instant, everything seems to stop. Her gaze is soft and filled with something I can’t quite decipher, but it makes me feel an indescribable warmth in my chest. Without breaking eye contact, Leah smiles shyly and gently squeezes my hand.

"Thank you for today," she says quietly. "I really needed this."

"So did I," I reply, feeling that those words contain more truth than I can express. The night air is cool, but Leah’s closeness makes it feel cozy.

We stay like that, in silence, for a while longer, enjoying each other’s company under the starry sky. Worries and painful memories fade away, if only for a moment, replaced by the peace of being with Leah.

After a few moments later I saw her yawning, making me too. Tiredness starting to climb to us indicating the end of the date.

“Time to go home I guess” I say as we sit on the blanket and stretching myself to start picking up everything from the ground

“It’s a shame that this day has to end” the look of deception in her eyes and I laugh a bit

“We can do it again anytime, the next one can be in my farm” after having everything done and the ground clean we start walking to her cabin, it was just a few steps away but it doesn’t matter

“I like how that sound, I’ll be waiting the next time” her laugh fill the ambient and in her door we remain silent for a few moments, just looking at each other

“Well…good night Leah, see you around” I murmur that words and turn to start walking when I feel her lips on my cheek, making my head move to her again.

“Good night, farmer. Don’t lose in the dark” seeing her laugh again makes me join, after her door was close I start my walk with the basket in hand

I really needed a day like today, hoping that I will sleep tonight and don’t stay awake remembering everything…especially her kiss

Chapter 8: Festival preparations and unspoken truths

Chapter Text

“Ugh, I can’t catch it!”

That and a few jumping sounds are what I hear when I come out of Marnie’s house after buying more animals.

Walking into the forest, I reach the tree near Marnie’s farm and see Leah there, trying to reach some kind of fruit from the tree but failing. It’s a funny sight, but I try not to laugh.

I approach her with silent steps and put my arms around her waist, scaring her and hearing her scream, which makes me laugh.

“Farmer! You scared me!” That makes me laugh more, and after a few seconds, I calm down and apologize.

“So you’re trying to catch that fruit, huh?” We both look up at the fruit hanging on the branch of the tree.

“Yeah, it looks delicious, but as you can see, I can’t reach it.” I move my gaze to her face while she keeps looking at the fruit.

With an agile movement, I lift her onto my shoulders, hearing her gasp from the sudden move, trying not to lose balance with the new weight over me.

“Hehe… thanks.”

“Hurry up, or I’ll let you fall” I say with a laugh.

“Don’t you dare!” After a few seconds and feeling her moving up there, she finally reaches it. “Okay… got it!”

Carefully, I put her down on the ground again, a smile on her face and the fruit in hand. “You’re stronger than you look!”

“Work on the farm has to pay off,” I say with a laugh. She offered me a bite of the fruit and it’s as sweet and delicious as she said it looked.

We go silent for a moment, the sound of us chewing filling the air until she breaks the silence.

“You know, I just realized something.” I look back at her face, waiting for her to keep talking.

“Even if my art career is a flop, I’ll always have you to catch me on the way down.”

I blush a bit at her words, looking away, trying to hide it. “You know I’ll always be by your side” I whisper.

There’s a moment of quiet again before I gather my courage. I had been planning to invite Leah to the Spirits Eve maze for days now, and this moment seemed perfect, even though I was a bit embarrassed to ask. “Hey, Leah, I wanted to ask you something.”

“Sure, what’s up?” she replies, taking another bite of the fruit.

“With Spirits Eve coming up, I was wondering… I know we’re all going with Elliot together, but would you like to go through the maze with me? Just the two of us?”

Leah’s eyes light up with surprise and delight. “Really? I’d love that! The maze is always more fun with a friend.”

I smile, feeling a warmth spread through me. “Great! It’ll be a lot of fun. And maybe we can find the golden pumpkin.”

After spending the morning with Leah in the forest, I’m now in Emily’s house, a few days ago I asked her for help because I wanted a costume for the Spirits Eve.

It was hard for me to choose a costume but finally, I decided to be a witch, a classic one but it never fails to look stunning.

“What do you think?” Emily said, showing me how my costume was coming along. I've always loved Emily’s sewing work, but being part of it was another level of happiness.

“It’s going amazing, Emily! I can’t wait to see it finished” the joy evident in my voice as I take the costume in my hands. It was almost ready, but I already wanted to try it on.

“Just give me a few more minutes and it’ll be ready” the sound of the sewing machine filling the room again.

Haley wasn’t here right now; Emily said she was somewhere with Alex. Deep down, I was a bit glad that she wasn’t here, as it would have been uncomfortable, to say the least.

Looking around the house filled me with nostalgia, remembering all the times I spent here and in Haley’s room just hanging out together.

“Sorry for never telling you that she was dating Alex; I wanted her to be the one to do it.” Emily’s tone was different from her usual happy demeanor; it was hard to describe.

“It’s okay, I can understand that you didn’t want to be in the middle of this” my tone matching hers.

“I tried to talk to her last night, but she just yelled at me. I swear, I don’t know why she’s so mean with everyone” my gaze moved back to Emily after hearing her words.

“I know why. Everybody says she’s mean and arrogant, but…I can say she’s more than that. If you go beyond all that meanness, you can see another side of Haley. That’s why I fell in love with her, because I could see that side.”

After a few seconds of silence, Emily was about to say something, but the sound of the front door opening and Haley entering the house stopped her.

She glanced back to where we were sitting, and our eyes met for a few seconds. Maybe I’m imagining it, but it wasn’t a normal look; there was something else there.

She headed to her room, making me question whether she had heard our conversation or if it was just a coincidence. My eyes followed her until she disappeared into her room, and the click of the door brought me back.

Emily turned back to the sewing machine, the hum of it filling the awkward silence.

“Maybe it’s also the fact that our parents are against that kind of love” she whispered, but I caught it, looking back at her, now curious about the topic.

“When I told my parents that I liked girls, they were really upset about it and stopped talking to me for a while. They do now, but I know it’s not the same as it was.”

“They became more loving and strict with Haley and always tried to find her a boyfriend so she doesn’t follow in my footsteps. It’s not a secret that they always liked Alex.”

I remained silent after hearing her words, seeing the hurt on Emily’s face and feeling sorry for her.

“I see” was all I whispered in return, feeling that Emily didn’t want to continue talking about that, so I decided to change the subject.

“By the way, what’s your costume for Spirits Eve? You’re doing mine, but I don’t see yours anywhere.”

“You don’t see it around because it’s in my room. I’m going to be a clown!” The joy in her voice made me laugh.

“A clown? Seriously?” I chuckled between laughs because I was expecting anything except that. “What made you choose that?”

Emily chuckled, her eyes twinkling. “I know it’s a bit unconventional, but I wanted something fun and different. Plus, it’s a great way to bring some laughter to the festival. Who doesn’t love a good clown?”

I shook my head, still smiling. “Only you, Emily, could pull off a clown costume at Spirits Eve and make it look amazing.”

She grinned, clearly pleased with herself. “Well, just wait until you see it. It’s not your typical clown costume. I added a few unique touches.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” I said, genuinely curious. “I bet it’ll be a hit.”

After a few more minutes, Emily's sewing machine stopped, and she held up the nearly finished costume. "Here, try this on. Let's see how it fits."

I headed to the bathroom to change into the costume. As I put it on, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. The witch costume fit perfectly, and I couldn't wait to see Leah's reaction at the festival.

When I stepped out of the bathroom, Emily clapped her hands in delight. "You look fantastic! Leah is going to be so impressed."

I blushed a little, feeling the anticipation build. "I hope so. Thanks again, Emily."

Just then, the door to Haley's room opened, and she stepped out, her eyes widening when she saw me in the costume. For a moment, there was a flicker of something in her gaze—surprise, maybe even a hint of admiration—before she quickly masked it with her usual aloofness.

"Nice costume” she said, her tone neutral.

"Thanks” I replied, trying to keep things casual. "Emily did a great job."

Haley nodded and headed towards the kitchen, leaving me and Emily in the living room. I could feel the tension in the air, but I tried to focus on the excitement of the upcoming festival.

I went back to the bathroom to take off the costume and came back to the living room. As I gathered my things to leave, Emily gave me a supportive smile. "Have fun at Spirits Eve, and good luck with Leah!"

"Thanks, Emily. I will" I said, feeling a surge of gratitude for her friendship.

With the costume in hand and a heart full of hope, I headed back to the farm, ready to face whatever the night of Spirits Eve might bring.

Chapter Text

The night of the Spirits Eve festival arrived, and the town was buzzing with excitement. The air was crisp, filled with the scents of autumn and the sounds of laughter and music. I made my way to the festival grounds, spotting Leah and Elliot near the skeletons.

—Wow, you look fantastic!

—You certainly look stunning tonight.

They both exclaimed, smiles in there’s faces making me too.

—Thanks both of you, Emily did it — I replied, feeling a blush rise to my cheeks. —You look great too! I love your costumes

Elliot was dressed as an elegant vampire, his costume making him look really handsome and Leah was wearing a Robin Hood one, perfectly complementing her artistic personality.

We joined Emily and a few others around the tables, chatting and enjoying the festive atmosphere.

As the night grew darker, it was time for the maze. We told Elliot we were going to the maze and he chose to stay talking.

I turned to Leah, my heart pounding. —Ready to get lost together?

She grinned, her eyes sparkling with excitement. —Absolutely. Let's go find that golden pumpkin!

We entered the maze, the path illuminated by eerie lanterns casting long shadows. The twists and turns were confusing, but Leah and I navigated them together, laughing and talking along the way.

As we walked deeper into the maze, we found a small alcove with a spooky decoration – a fake skeleton hanging from the branches above. Leah stopped to admire it, her eyes lighting up with curiosity.

—Look at this. It's so detailed. — she said, reaching out to touch the skeleton.

I smiled, stepping closer to examine it with her. —It's amazing. They really outdid themselves this year.

While Leah was absorbed in the decoration, I noticed something peculiar on the ground—a small side path we hadn't seen before. I thought it might be a shortcut or an interesting section of the maze, maybe the golden pumpkin was there.

—Leah, look at this. It seems like a shortcut. — I said, pointing to the path.

Leah nodded but was still focused on the skeleton, maybe analyzing it to make another sculpture. —A shortcut? Sounds good, just give me a moment and I’ll join.

I decided to explore the path while she finished looking at the decoration. —I'm going to check it out quickly. I’ll back in a moment

Without waiting for a response, I ventured down the narrow path, thinking I wouldn't go far. However, the path turned out to be longer and more winding than I had expected. After a few minutes of walking and several turns, I realized I had lost sight of Leah.

—Leah?

I called out, but there was no response.

I tried to retrace my steps, but the maze looked different, and every path seemed identical. Taking a deep breath, I decided to keep moving forward, hoping to find her further along.

As I navigated the twists and turns, I suddenly bumped into someone coming from the opposite direction. Startled, I looked up and saw Haley standing there, equally surprised.

—Haley? — I said, my voice a mix of relief and confusion.

—Hey. — she replied, her tone softer than usual. —Are you lost too?

I nodded, feeling a strange mix of emotions. —Yeah, I was with Leah but walk away and when I came back she wasn’t there

We went silent, the only sound around was the music and voices of people out of the maze in the festival. I look at her, seeing her costume; she was dressed as a queen in dark tone.

—nice costume, it looks good on you — I said trying to break the uncomfortable silence

She just nod in response and I look away, the tension was heavy here.

—i guess I’m going to keep looking around…

I murmured and walk by her side until a hand grab my wrist and I turned my head to see her, a bit surprised.

—I heard it. —I was confused when she said that and I guess she saw it — Your conversation with Emily

—Oh…I see. — so I wasn’t wrong, she actually heard us talking about her

The way she’s grabbing my wrist right now gave me a little deja vu. The tension between us can be cut with a scissor at this point

—I know I have been an asshole lately and…I’m sorry for everything

I can’t denied I was surprised hearing that words coming out of her mouth, I wasn’t expecting an apology

—it’s okay, i never had a grudge against you.

Yes, it is true that there were nights where I had trouble sleeping, wondering what I had done wrong or what I could do to change the situation.

All the times Elliot had to hear me talk about her and how I felt about seeing her with Alex every time.

Looking at her face I almost feel a bit bad, her usual cocky expression was replaced with a sad one as she looks away from me.

—All this time I have been thinking that this was the right path, following my parent desires and scared of going against them

She took a deep breath to stabilize herself before continuing talking —I started dating Alex cause they always told me to do it, that he’s a nice guy and he truly is but…

—I had try a lot to force me to love him but I can’t, I can’t see him more than just a friend and now I’m afraid of breaking with him and lost him too.

I heard her take out all her feelings in silent, not knowing what to say just looking down at the ground. Somehow understanding how she feels.

Running away from my life in the city; wanting to escape of the expectations that everybody had on me of pursuing a typical career that I’m not interested in.

—What I want to say is…I love you and even if I’m scared I want to be with you.

Our gaze meet again, I feel like there was a knot in my stomach for all the things I want to say to her, wanting to hug her and tell her that I also want that…but I can’t.

If she had told me that a few weeks ago I would said yes but, right now? I don’t think I can do that.

The tension was heavy and I finally decided to talk, feeling my chest tight and my hands sweeting a bit.

—I’m glad that you had make your mind after all this time and I forgive you for everything but…I must say no.

The look in her face makes me feel so guilty, the surprise and hurt in her eyes making my heart ache.

—What? Why? I told you I’m sorry…I thought you still love me.

—I did, I really did love you. I still haven’t cut the sunflowers in my farm cause they reminds me of you!

Feeling the tears in my eyes and I don’t know if it’s cause I’m sad or frustrated with everything, don’t knowing if I’m doing the right thing.

—Do you even think about me? About how do I feel with you telling me that you love me after all this time…I’m sorry but I can’t let you come into my heart again.

I take a deep breath and take my hand off of his grip, now standing in front of her.

—I already gave you the opportunity to talk and fix the things but now it’s too late for that. You’re with Alex and i started to feel things for someone else.

I look away from his face when I see there tears rolling down his cheeks, knowing that i will feel worse if I keep looking at her.

We stayed silent, there was nothing else to say. I clean the tears of my eyes with the sleeve of my costume and looked back at her.

—I should go and found Leah, see you around Haley. — with that last words I turned around and start walking away from that place.

As I moved deeper into the maze, my thoughts were a whirlwind. The encounter with Haley had stirred up old feelings and unresolved emotions. But I knew I had made the right choice. I had to keep moving forward.

The maze seemed even more confusing now, and I found myself taking wrong turns more than once. The eerie decorations and flickering lanterns did little to calm my racing heart. I just wanted to find Leah and enjoy the rest of the night with her.

After what felt like an eternity, I finally heard familiar laughter up ahead. I quickened my pace and turned a corner to find Leah, Abigail and Sam standing near the Fontaine that indicates the middle of the maze.

—There you are! — she exclaimed after seeing me, relief evident in her voice. —I was starting to worry.

I smiled, trying to push the encounter with Haley to the back of my mind. —Got a bit turned around, but I'm glad I found you.

Leah took my hand, squeezing it reassuringly. —Let's stick together this time.

Leah was talking about that now that we’re more; we should keep looking for the end of the maze. The weight of the conversation with Haley had taken my energies so i turned to Leah.

—You know… — I said, trying to keep my voice light. —I think I've had enough of this maze. How about we head out and enjoy the rest of the festival?

Leah looked at me, concern flashing in her eyes. —Are you sure? We haven't found the golden pumpkin yet.

I nodded, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. —Yeah, I'm sure. Let's just enjoy the night without stressing about it.

—We're up for that too. — Abigail said with a relieved smile. —To be honest, I was getting creeped out by those fake spiders.

Sam chuckled, nudging her playfully. —Really, Abby? They looked so fake! I can't believe you got scared.

Abigail gave him a little hit on the shoulder making Sam complain, I laugh at the interaction and saw Abi crossing her arms over his chest.

—Hey, they were pretty realistic, okay? And the way they hung from the trees was super creepy!

Leah join to my laughs, the tension easing away as we listened to their playful banter.

—Alright, let's get out of here. — Leah said, leading the way.

We navigated our way back through the maze, the path seeming much shorter now that we weren't focused on finding the golden pumpkin. As we emerged from the labyrinth, the festive atmosphere of Spirits Eve enveloped us once more. The music, laughter, and warm glow of lanterns welcomed us back.

Now out of the maze we walk where Elliot and the others were sitting, telling horror stories. Abigail and Sam went near Sebastian and Leah and I stay sitting with Elliot.

We spend the rest of the festival laughing of the bad story’s and feeling a bit scared of the real ones. Even with the turn of events in the maze, it was a good Halloween this year.

Chapter 10: Winter embrace

Chapter Text

Winter has arrived in the valley — the cold breeze and the change of colours in the ambient are the proof of it. In the first days of winter, I spent them cutting off all the dead crops of the farm and trying to make it look presentable at least.

This season feels like a break from the rest of the year. Now, I just have to take care of the animals and return to fishing.

And talking about fishing, today is the festival of ice and everybody is here in the Cindersap forest near Marnie's farm and Leah's house. I entered the forest and the sight of igloos, snowmen, and ice sculptures greeted me.

I found Elliot and Leah in the zone of ice sculptures — of course, if we talk about sculptures, Leah is there.

— Hey, farmer! — Elliot was the first one to notice my closeness, making Leah take her eyes off the sculpture.

— I thought you weren't coming! — Leah said, leaving her tools there and coming closer, giving me a hug.

I wasn't expecting the hug, but I returned it, smiling. — You know I never miss a festival.

After the hug, she went back to her sculpture, and I got near Elliot, greeting him too with a hug.

— Just hugging you so you don't get jealous. — I said, jokingly.

He rolled his eyes, and I just laughed, making him laugh too. After that, I just stood by his side, looking at Leah working on her sculpture; she was doing a mermaid.

— Are you going to participate in the fishing contest? — he asked, and I took a moment to think about it.

— It's been a while since the last time I fished, but I guess I can give it a try. Are you going to?

— Yeah, Willy forced me to do it. He even gifted me a rod days ago to practice.

We both laughed at that. Willy will do everything to revive fishing here in the town.

After talking a bit more, Mayor Lewis said that it was time to start the contest. Everyone came closer, making a circle around the ice where we, the participants, were.

— Alright, everyone, let's begin this year's ice fishing competition. — Mayor Lewis started talking to explain what the competition consists of.

— Contestants, your goal is to catch as many fish as you possibly can in two minutes using the provided fishing rod. You must catch your fish here from these holes in the ice.

I took my position and took one of the fishing rods that were available, looking at the other contestants and giving a smile to Elliot.

— Well, is everyone ready... begin!

And with that, the time started running, and everyone started fishing. It was a bit hard because the holes were very small, so I had to get very close to them.

Time ran fast, and in the blink of an eye, the mayor blew the whistle, indicating that time was up.

— Wow, that's a lot of fish! — after saying that, a grimace of displeasure appeared on his face. — But the smell...

With that, he started counting all the fish of each of us. I was beside Elliot, not very sure of who would be the winner.

— Now, for the winner of this year's ice fishing competition... the farmer, with 5 big, slimy fish!

I was a bit surprised; I was expecting Willy to win. The mayor gave me the prize, which was a cute sailor's cap that I put on immediately and some fishing artifacts.

The crowd cheered, and I felt a wave of satisfaction wash over me. I glanced over at Elliott, who gave me a thumbs-up and a smile.

— Nice job, Farmer. — he said as we walked away from the ice.

— Thanks, Elliott. You did great too. I saw you catching quite a few.

He chuckled. — Well, practice paid off, I guess. But you really nailed it out there.

We made our way back to where Leah was still working on her mermaid sculpture. She looked up and smiled when she saw us.

— Hey, winner! Congratulations! — she said, wiping her hands on a cloth.

— Thanks, Leah. Your sculpture looks amazing, by the way. — I replied, admiring the delicate details of the mermaid's tail.

— Yeah, Leah, it's incredible. — Elliott added. — You have such a talent for this.

Leah blushed slightly. — Thanks, both of you. I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out.

As the festival continued, we wandered around, enjoying the various activities and chatting with the other villagers. The cold air was refreshing, and the festive atmosphere was infectious.

— So, any plans for the rest of the winter? — Leah asked, looking at me.

— I'll probably focus on fishing and taking care of the animals. Maybe do some upgrades around the farm. — I replied. — What about you?

— I have a few commissions to work on, and I want to experiment with some new materials. — Leah said, her eyes lighting up with excitement.

Elliott added, — I have some writing projects to finish, and I'll probably spend a lot of time at the beach, even in this cold.

The conversation flowed easily as we enjoyed the rest of the festival together. As the day turned into evening, the sky darkened, and the twinkling lights around the forest created a magical atmosphere.

Days went on and I spent them fishing, trying to get better at it for something I'm planning.

Leah's birthday is in a few days and I want to give her the best gift ever. She likes gems so I decided to give her a pearl necklace; the problem is...pearls are very tough to get.

But I was talking with Willy and he told me that I have a chance in the night market; the boats that come to the beach for three days with different stands and the one I'll visit is the night submarine.

Willy told me that I'll have more probabilities to fish a pearl in the fishing submarine, so I'm going to take advantage of that.

Right now I was fishing in the river of the town, the sun was hiding in the horizon and I was focused on the water; until a familiar voice reached my ears.

—Did something bite already? You have been here the whole day.

I moved my gaze to the side and smiled seeing Emily coming closer and standing by my side.

—Well, some trash, broken glasses and if you're thirsty I have fished some Joja cola..

—I think Sam would like them more than me, give me. — I laughed, knowing what she's going to do with it — if you go to the saloon, don't tell him that you fished it.

—That's evil, Emily. — I said in between laughs and handed her the can of soda.

We went silent for a moment, I took the rod out of the water and put it on the ground; I don't think anything is going to bite.

—I know it's been a few days since Halloween but I really want to know what happened that day...
—When I got home after the festival, Haley was crying. I asked Alex but he didn't know.

I stayed silent for a few good seconds, looking at the water of the river and biting my lip slightly.

—We had a little talk in there, I guess it's okay if you know; after all you are like part of all this thing.

—She apologized for the way she acted and told me a few things about her parents. After all that, she just told me that she wants to be with me but...I said no.

Emily was listening in silence, paying close attention to everything I was saying.

—I see, you know Haley is my sister and all; but if you had agreed to be with her after all, I would have hit you.

We both laughed after those words, the moment getting lighter.

—Let's say I just did what I thought was right. — I shrugged my shoulders, smiling.

—It's good to hear that, well I should come back to the saloon, I told Gus I was going to take out the trash but here I am.

—Nice to talk with you, Emily. — I took the rod off the ground — I'm heading home, enough fishing for today.

We both said goodbye and each one took a different path. I felt more light after talking with Emily, now more sure that I did the right thing.

Chapter 11: Under the Lights of the Night Market

Chapter Text

The Night Market arrived, transforming the beach into a bustling hub of activity. The colorful lights and the sound of waves created an enchanting atmosphere. The sea breeze carried the scent of salt and exotic foods as people milled about, admiring the various stalls and attractions.

I looked around, trying to find Elliott and Leah. After a few seconds, I spotted Elliott first, standing near the submarine tour booth, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

—Elliott! — I called out, waving as I approached. He turned, a warm smile spreading across his face.

—Ah, there you are — he said —. I was hoping to run into you. The Night Market is quite the spectacle, isn't it?

—Definitely — I replied, glancing around at the vibrant scene —. Have you seen Leah?

—She's over by the mermaid boat, working on a new piece of art — Elliott said, pointing towards the dock.

—Nice… — I mumbled, looking in the direction he pointed.

I was glad she was over there and not here; I would rather get the pearl without her knowing about it so she doesn't suspect anything. I felt Elliott looking at me, a bit confused by my words.

—Don’t think wrong; I want to fish for a pearl here in the submarine to give her a necklace for her birthday.

—A pearl? I can see that no one has loved me before.

—Well…yes, it’s not that hard to see, Elliott — I joked and laughed when he rolled his eyes, earning a playful hit on my head from him.

—You’re lucky that we’re friends. If you want it that way, I can help distract Leah — he offered with a grin.

—Thanks, Elliott. That would be a huge help.

After thanking him, he walked away, and I entered the submarine, greeted by the captain, who told me that the deep-sea fishing tour would cost one thousand gold.

After paying the fee, I took my rod and stood by the trapdoor in the floor, waiting for it to open.

The submarine descended into the depths of the ocean, and I stared through the window in awe at the underwater scenery. Bioluminescent creatures glowed in the dark, and schools of fish swam by.

After a long few minutes, the trapdoor opened, and I started fishing, hoping for luck.

Minutes turned into hours, and I caught various fish and treasures, but no pearls. Feeling frustrated and mad about it, I gave it one last try before the submarine ride ended.

After a few minutes, I felt a tug on my line, stronger than any I had felt before. With a mixture of hope and concentration, I reeled in my catch, only to let a frustrated sigh escape me.

It was an octopus—another one. The captain said that the submarine was going to close, and we began to return to the surface. Maybe I’ll have more luck tomorrow.

At least I have a lot of fish to sell to Willy. After another thirty minutes, we were finally back on the surface. I thanked the captain and went back to the beach.

I made my way through the crowd, looking for Elliott and Leah, the glow of lanterns reflecting off the water. I found them by the mermaid boat, Elliott helping Leah save all her materials and tools. She looked up as I approached, her face lighting up with a smile.

—Hey! I was wondering when I'd see you — she said, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face —. Where have you been? It’s almost midnight.

—I thought you weren’t even here — Elliott said with a smirk, playing the fool to help me.

—I arrived a few minutes ago, don’t worry — I said, a bit tired. Leah gave me a suspicious look, so I decided to change the topic.

I took a look at the sculpture that was almost finished. —What were you working on?

—It's a mermaid — Leah said, gesturing to the half-finished sculpture —. I got inspired by the stories and the setting. What about you? Have you had a chance to explore yet?

—Not really — I admitted —. I wanted to find you both first. How about we explore together?

Elliott finished helping Leah save all her materials and looked back at me. —I'd love that. But my bed is calling for me, maybe tomorrow.

—Come on, you can sleep later. Most of the attractions don’t close until 2 AM — I tried to convince him. I was tired too, but I could hold on a little longer.

—I would like to, but I’m with Elliott this time. Maybe tomorrow; after all, they’ll be here two more days — Leah added, picking up her bag and sculpture, ready to leave, as was Elliott.

I rolled my eyes with a sigh, defeated. —Alright, see y’all tomorrow.

Next day I woke up with a letter from the mayor in my mailbox, saying that the feast of the Winter Star is just around the corner, also telling me who I have to give a gift to at the festival.

For my bad luck…I got Alex. It’s not like I hate him or anything like that, it’s just that I feel the only person I can ask for help is Haley.

Running my hands over my face, I save the letter in my pocket. I’ll figure out what I should give him later — I have more than a week for that.

I made my way to the beach, deciding to spend the day there trying to catch something good. After a few minutes of walking, I arrived at the dock, rod in hand, staring at the calm water.

I was lost in my thoughts, completely unaware of Elliott approaching my side.

—Earth to farmer, are you there? — he asked with a laugh, moving his hand in front of my face.

—I’m back, don't worry — I said, getting out of my thoughts and seeing that nothing had bitten still.

—Did you get the pearl last night? I forgot to ask you

—Unfortunately not, but I hope to get it tonight; I really want to give it to her.

—I hope so too — we got silent after that, until he decided to talk again — talking about Leah. When do you both stop playing games and confess to each other?

—I will do it soon, when I get the courage for that — after being rejected one time, I’m a bit scared to do it again — why? Are you going to write a novel about us?

—Obviously no, it wouldn’t sell.

I turned my head to look at him, the smirk on his face after his own joke.

—Haha you’re so funny, Elliott — I said sarcastically — It's a good thing you're a writer because you'll starve like a clown.

He was going to reply, but our attention went to the water when I felt something take the bait. I started winding the rod; it was something heavy.

With some effort, I finally got it—an albacore. I moved it near Elliott's face to tease him, seeing him take a few steps back.

—Come on, give him a little kiss — I said in between laughs.

—Put that thing away from me! — he made a misstep and almost fell in the water.

After laughing a bit more at him, I finally put the little friend in the bucket, ready to be given to Willy. With the fish away, Elliott came back to my side.

—You're such a coward; he just wanted to give you a kiss.

—A kiss my ass, horrible joke and you can't talk about cowards when you're scared of confessing your feelings to Leah.

I decided to not say anything back; he was right but I'm not going to admit it.

The day passed quickly, and it was night again. The beach was full of people, creating a happy, loud, and colorful atmosphere with all the attractions and lights.

I'd like to be up there enjoying all that, but here I am again, in a submarine in the deepest part of the ocean trying to fish a pearl for the girl I’m in love with.

—The girl I love… — I mumbled to myself, my eyes fixed on the water.

It feels weird to say that but at the same time, I like how it sounds. Elliott's words echoed in the back of my head.

I want to confess to her, I really do, but it’s hard. Even if I know — well, not 100%, but even if I have the suspicion that it's reciprocal, it’s hard to just go and say it.

The feeling of something taking the bait pulled me out of my thoughts. I started winding the rod, hoping that it's what I think it is…but obviously, it wasn't a pearl. Instead, it was another sea cucumber.

I sighed in desperation, tired of being stuck here for two nights in a row without finding the damn pearl. The captain informed me that it was time to close up and that we were going to return to the surface. One day, I only have tomorrow to get it or I’m screwed.

After getting back to the surface, I headed back to the farm – too tired and frustrated to look for Elliott and Leah, I just wanted to lay in my bed until tomorrow.

And that's what I did. I just left the farm when the night arrived to come back to the same place that I'm starting to hate.

As the submarine descended, I closed my eyes, trying to clear my mind of the frustration and anxiety. I pictured Leah’s face, her smile when she’s excited, the way her eyes light up when she talks about her art. This was for her. I could do this.

The hours passed slowly. I caught several fish, but no pearls. With each failed attempt, the weight of disappointment grew heavier. I was about to give up, thinking that maybe this whole idea was foolish when I felt a different kind of tug on the line. It was stronger, more deliberate. My heart pounded as I carefully wound the rod.

And there it was – a pearl, glistening and perfect. I stared at it in disbelief, a mix of relief and joy washing over me; I swear I almost cried with joy. I couldn’t wait to see Leah’s reaction when she sees the necklace.

With the pearl stored in a bag I had brought specifically for it, the submarine resurfaced. I packed away my rod, happy that I wouldn't be using it again for a while.

Back at the dock, I spent the rest of the night with Elliott and Leah, who had finished her sculpture last night. At my request, we went to all the attractions at the Night Market, finally able to enjoy them after being stuck in the depths of the sea.

Chapter 12: Gifts and confessions

Chapter Text

—Who do you have to gift in the festival? — I asked Elliot for the third time because he kept refusing to tell me. —I already told you mine, so come on.

—You’re really persistent. If you want to know so bad, it’s Jodi. — He said with a sigh, not looking up from his novel.

—Do you already know what to gift her? I’m stuck with mine.

I let out a sigh and leaned against the wall by his side, my arms crossed over my chest.

—Actually, I was planning to ask if you have some diamonds from your travels to the mines.

—Diamonds? Sure, I have some on the farm. I can bring you a few ones later.

—You’re the best. I’m going to add a letter with the gift. — He said, finally looking up from his novel. He'd been writing this whole time. —How is it going with your own gift?

—I’m still figuring it out. I don’t think Mrs. Evelyn would really know, and I don’t want to ask Haley.

Things with Haley were still a bit uncomfortable. It’s not like we hate each other, but I’d prefer not to get along for a while.

—Just gift him something artisanal. You live on a farm; it’s not that hard to think of something. — He said, making me feel a bit dumb for not thinking of that first.

—And what do you suggest?

—I don’t know, a bottle of wine? — He said, leaning back more in his chair. —A good wine is always the right option.

—Now you’re sounding like Shane. — I laughed, watching his eyes roll. —But maybe you’re right. I've been aging some, so it’s a good idea.

—I always have good ideas. — Now it was my turn to roll my eyes at his words.

—Now, changing the topic... — I went to sit on his bed, looking at the ceiling, a bit embarrassed by my next words. —I'm going to confess to Leah.

—Finally! — He exclaimed, making me laugh. —Now start talking because I need details.

I blushed a bit, thinking of the details. —Well, I was thinking of doing it on New Year’s Eve, when Gus launches the fireworks.

—That's perfect! — He said with excitement. —Leah loves fireworks, doesn't she?

I nodded. —Yes, and I thought it would be a magical moment, with the sky lit up and everyone celebrating the new year.

—Have you thought about what you're going to say? — He asked, sitting up and giving me his full attention.

—I’m still thinking on it. I want it to be heartfelt, you know? — I said, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement. —Something like how much she means to me and how she's become such an important part of my life.

—She'll love that. — He reassured me. —Just make sure to find the right moment, away from the crowd.

—I know. — I nodded. —I'll find a quiet spot near the beach where we can watch the fireworks together. Just the two of us.

—Sounds like a plan. — He said with a grin. —I'm really happy for both of you.

—Thanks. — I said, feeling a bit more confident. —I just hope everything goes as planned.

—It will. — He said firmly —Just be yourself, and everything will fall into place.

I nodded again. I couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement in my chest, waiting to see Leah’s reaction and hoping with all my heart that she felt the same way.

──────────

Today is Leah’s birthday, and Elliot and I decided to throw a little party here in the farmhouse. I was setting the cake on the table when the sound of a balloon popping made me jump.

—Another one?! — I turned my head to see Elliot with the remnants of a balloon in his hands. It was like the fourth one. — You really suck at that.

—Then let’s switch; I’m tired of these things — he said, throwing the remains into the trash and coming closer to me.

—Fine, we just need a few more, after all. — He started putting the candles on the cake, and I went back to blowing up more balloons.

After finishing with the balloons, I turned to look at him. —By the way, what time did you tell Leah to come?

Our plan was to tell her to come to my house to watch some movies and eat something, but instead, we had arranged this little surprise for her.

Elliot looked at the clock on the wall. It was almost 5 o’clock. He was about to answer, but the knocks on the door were answer enough.

We looked at each other, and he started lighting the candles. With that done, we grabbed the confetti cannons and walked to the door, trying not to step on the balloons.

I opened the door to find Leah standing there, a curious smile on her face.

—Hey, what’s going on? — she asked, glancing around.

—Surprise! — we shouted, popping the confetti cannons. The colorful paper showered over Leah as her eyes widened in delight.

—Oh my gosh! You guys, this is amazing! — she exclaimed, stepping inside and taking in the decorations and the cake.

—Happy birthday, Leah! — I said, feeling a surge of happiness at seeing her so pleased.

—Thank you so much, — she said, hugging me tightly. —This is the best surprise ever.

Elliot joined in, patting Leah on the back. —We couldn’t let your birthday go by without a little celebration.

Leah beamed, her eyes sparkling. —This means so much to me. You guys are the best.

We led her to the table, where the cake awaited, candles flickering merrily. After singing a slightly off-key but enthusiastic rendition of “Happy Birthday”

Leah closed her eyes for a moment, clearly thinking of something special, and then blew out the candles in one breath. The room erupted in cheers and laughter as we all settled down to enjoy the cake.

—Now, before we start eating and everything else, you should open your gifts. —Elliott said, handing her the box with his present.

—Aww, you shouldn’t have worried about gifts. —Leah said, taking a seat and beginning to unwrap the present.

Inside, she found a set of paints that she had been eyeing for a long time, some new brushes, and of course, a letter. It would be unusual if Elliott hadn’t included a letter.

Leah’s eyes sparkled with delight as she examined each item. She carefully opened the envelope and began to read the letter inside.

As she read, a soft smile spread across her face. The letter was filled with kind words and encouragement, expressing how much Elliott admired her talent and how he hoped these new supplies would inspire her in her art.

—This is so thoughtful, Elliott. Thank you so much. — Leah said, looking up with a heartfelt smile.

Elliott returned her smile. —I’m glad you like it. I knew you’d been wanting these for a while.

Leah gave him a grateful hug, and then tur

Elliott returned her smile. —I’m glad you like it. I knew you’d been wanting these for a while.

Leah gave him a grateful hug, and then turned to me. Elliot giving me a slight push in the shoulder to encourage me to give her the little box in my hands.

—It’s not as much as Elliot’s one but I put all my effort in it. — she grabbed the little box and opened, my heart beating faster in my chest and hoping that she like it.

She took the necklace out of the box, her eyes shining just like the pearl that was in the middle of the necklace.

—I’m out of words…it’s so beautiful.

I blush a bit at her words and didn’t expect the suddenly hug that canes after them. My arms hugging her back hearing his words of gratitude.

—I’m so happy that you like it. — I said after breaking the hug, helping her to put it on.

The smile on her face being enough to make me feel full of joy, I would give anything to keep that smile on your face.

The evening went by in a blur of laughter, stories, and warmth. We watched movies, shared food, and celebrated Leah’s special day in the best way possible.

I couldn't help but feel grateful for moments like these, loving this moments around the people that became my family.

Chapter 13: New Year’s Eve and new beginnings

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The feast of the Winter Star, the best festival in my opinion. The ambience and seeing everyone feeling grateful for everything they have.

I came to Pelican Town just to take care of the grandpa farm but now the year is ending…I can’t help but feel nostalgic as I look back. At first, I was so scared to came here but now…it’s like a found a home here in the valley.

As I walked through the town square, decorated with festive lights and ornaments, I saw familiar faces everywhere. Mayor Lewis and Marnie were together near one of the Christmas trees, while Caroline laughed with Jodi near the large decorated tree. The air was filled with the sweet scent of freshly baked cookies and warm cider.

I walk close of one of the tables where a lot of people were sitting, Emily being the first in notice me and getting near.

—Hey there! Happy Winter Star — Emily greeted me with her usual bright smile, pulling me into a warm hug. —Can you believe another year has passed?

I returned her hug, feeling the warmth of her embrace. —I know, it's hard to believe. It feels like just yesterday I was planting my first crops.

Emily laughed, her eyes sparkling. —You've come a long way since then. You've become such an important part of our community.

I blushed at her words. —Thank you, Emily. It means a lot to hear that.

She nodded and glanced back at the table. —Elliot and your girlfriend have been looking for you. You should go say hi.

I nod at her words until I realized what she said —E-eh?! She’s not my-

—Oh don’t try to denied it! The way you both look at each other in public, I almost feel bad for Elliot each time! —She said with a laugh and a hand in my shoulder

—Oh my god…we’re not dating! — I could feel the heat over my face, this girl seriously.

—Still — add her and I just rolled my eyes trying to ignore her tease.

—I hope so — I replied and didn’t leave her chance to say something else, getting up from the chair and walking where Elliot and Leah were sitting.

As I approached the table, Elliot was deep in conversation with Leah about the gifts they had selected for the exchange.

—I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s reactions to their gifts — Elliot was saying, his eyes bright with enthusiasm. —It’s always interesting to see what people choose for each other.

Leah nodded in agreement. —I’m especially excited to see what Emily would think of the gift I chose for her.

I took the seat next to Leah, feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity. —What is it? If I can know.

—I asked her for some photos of her parrot with the excuse of looking for inspiration — she start talking, the excitement in her eyes and voice —But it was for making a painting of her with it! I want to give it to her already.

—Aww that’s cute, I can’t wait to see it too — i said, I’m sure she’s going to love it.

—I didn’t know she has a parrot until you mentioned it — Elliot said, biting one of the cookies that were on a tray on the table.

—She adopted long time ago, the poor parrot stamped with her window and she took care of it — I told him, it’s not like she takes it out a lot.

—Sounds like something she would do. —he said back, right when mayor Lewis announced that we can start with the gift exchange.

Alex went to stand in front of the Christmas tree in the middle of the town square, with the bottle wrapped in hands I walk from my place and stand behind him.

I was a bit nervous of his reaction, hoping him to like it. He turned around with a smile, but not a happy one, it was pre like a sad one.

—Hey farmer, so you’re my secret Santa this year, eh? —he said softly.

—Yeah, i hope you like it. —I give the bottle of wine and handed it to him who unwrapped it.

Alex's eyes softened as he looked at the bottle. He gave a small, genuine smile this time, though it was tinged with a hint of sadness.

—Thanks. I wasn’t expecting this. It’s really thoughtful of you.

He glanced around the festive decorations and the bustling town square, his mood seeming to shift as he took in the holiday atmosphere.

—You know, this time of year always brings back memories. It’s nice to have a bit of cheer, even if it’s just a small gesture.

I nodded, feeling a pang of sympathy for him.

—Thanks again, I’ll see you around, farmer. —with that words he walk back to his seat. Somehow I can understand him, not having your parents here with you in a special date.

Following the dynamic, it was my turn to stand in front of the big tree, looking at all the adorns and decorations in it. I hear some footsteps behind me and when they stopped I turned around, finding Jas there.

—Hey there, so you’re my secret Santa of this year. — I said smiling to her, looking down to the little box in her hands.

—Yes, I have my gift for you, I found it last summer when I was playing in the beach. I hope you like it. — she said giving me the present

I opened it and found…clay, just one clay.

—Oh wow…thanks Jas, this is…an amazing gift!

She smiled after hearing my words —Yay! I’m so happy that I picked right!

I nodded and walked away with the box, sitting back with the two gingers.

—So clay… — Elliot started, the grin on his face saying everything.

—Shut up, she’s just a kid —I said back hearing Leah laughing in the back.

The day went on and the exchange finished. Marnie gifted Elliot a new feather to write and Gus gifted Leah a salad, no need to said that Emily and Jodi loved their gifts.

New Year’s Eve, the last day of an amazing year and the start of a better one. I can’t express how grateful I’m for all the things I experienced in just a year.

From being scared for a new beginning to find amazing people that changed my life, changing it so much that today I am going to confess my love to one of them.

A blanket in the sand, some snacks and the most important thing: the bouquet. I bought it from Pierre’s yesterday, wanting them to be the most fresh possible.

I was so nervous for this, looking down and seeing the moon and the stars of the night sky reflecting in the water. On the other side of the beach Gus was preparing the fireworks; just a few minutes more.

I crossed the mini wood bridge, walking to where Elliot was distracting Leah while I was gone. Everyone was in the beach, waiting for the countdown to start.

—I’m going to see if Gus need help over there, see y’all — Elliot said right when I got near, Leah was going to say something but he was already gone.

—He didn’t even let me say bye — Leah said, huffing and looking in the direction he left.

—You already know him — I said, a bit low than I was planning for the nervous.

The mayor announced that just five more minutes until the countdown and that was my signal to do this already.

—Hey Leah, I have a better place to see the fireworks. Let’s go. —I didn’t wait for an answer and took her hand in mine, walking to the other side of the beach.

Our footsteps left marks on the snow as we walked together, the cold crunch of it under our boots adding to the atmosphere. Leah looked around curiously, her breath visible in the chilly air.

—Where are we going? —she asked, a hint of amusement in her voice.

—You'll see, —I replied, trying to keep the excitement and nerves from my voice. —It’s passing the bridge.

We reached the blanket I had set up, and I gestured for Leah to sit. She looked surprised but pleased, her eyes softening as she took in the sight of the snacks and the bouquet.

—Wow, this is beautiful. You really went all out.

I sat down beside her, my heart racing.

—I wanted tonight to be special. There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you.

Leah’s eyes met mine, a mixture of curiosity and warmth in her gaze. I know she figured out already with just seeing the bouquet.

—What is it?

I took a deep breath, my hand shaking slightly as I picked up the bouquet and handed it to her.

—Leah, this past year has been incredible because of you. I’ve never felt more at home, more myself, than I do when I’m with you.

I take a deep breath before continuing —When I came here I never expected to fall in love with anyone, I was scared of not finding a place in the town but then I founded you and Elliot, you two became like a family for me.

For a moment, Leah seemed taken aback, her eyes wide with surprise. Then, a slow smile spread across her face, and she reached out to take the bouquet, her fingers brushing against mine.

—What I want to say is…I love you, I really do and I want to start a new year with you by my side. And if is possible, if our paths are meant together…I want a life by your side.

silence fell between us, just looking at each other. I was nervous for what she’s going to say but the smile on her face relieved me a bit.

—I’ve been feeling the same way, —she said softly. —I just didn’t know how to say it and algo thought you still feel things for Haley…

I felt a pang of guilt at the mention of Haley, but I shook my head, looking earnestly into Leah's eyes.

—Haley and I... we had our moments, but they’re in the past. What I feel for you, Leah, it's different. It's real and I can’t imagine my life without you in it.

Leah’s eyes softened, and she Move closer, holding the bouquet tightly.

—It makes me so happy hearing you saying that.

The mayor's voice echoed in the distance, announcing that there were only thirty seconds left until the countdown.

—I love you too —Leah finally said, her voice steady and full of emotion. —Let’s start this new year together.

I reached out and took her hand, feeling a sense of completeness. As the final seconds ticked away, we turned to watch the fireworks. The first burst of color illuminated the sky, and the crowd's cheers filled the night.

—Ten, nine, eight... — the countdown began, and I could feel Leah’s hand tightening around mine.

—Seven, six, five... — we stood there, lost in each other’s gaze, as the world around us prepared to welcome the new year.

—Four, three, two, one... Happy New Year!

The sky exploded in a dazzling display of lights, and without thinking, I leaned in and kissed Leah. My free hand going to her cheek as our lips danced together.

The fireworks roared overhead, and the warmth of her lips against mine felt like the perfect beginning to a new chapter.

When we finally pulled away, breathless and smiling, I knew that this was the start of something beautiful.

—Happy New Year, Leah, —I whispered.

—Happy New Year, —she replied, her eyes shining with joy.

We stayed there together, his head on my shoulder while our hands continued to intertwine. I wouldn't change this moment for anything in the world.
