Work Header

It's Percy Prewett, not Percy Weasley

Summary:

Somehow, Percy knew everything would be fine in the end. And he knew he would never have to worry about his siblings believing their mother, either.
After all…
“Percy Prewett!” Minister Fudge called, waving him over. “Please, I’d like to speak with you!”
Prewetts never failed to find the truth, even if Weasleys did.

Notes:

[ Entirely self indulgent fantasy, right here. I like writing Percy Weasley, what can I say? ]
[ Most fascinatingly, I always somehow end up writing him as autistic-coded or low empathy-coded??? Apparently the projection is real lol ]
[ Please enjoy this little snippet of fluffy joy that I love writing! ]

Chapter Text

Percy sighed as he watched Ron pester Harry over the escape of Sirius Black. He stood up, already tired before even breakfast, and stalked over to his brother. “Ronald, please stop. It’s not your business, nor is it Harry’s. Yes,” he said pointedly when Ron tried to interrupt, “I know Harry may be in danger. But it does not mean he has to deal with it himself.”

Harry gave Percy a relieved smile. Ron pouted, but dropped the topic.

Percy left them be, practically collapsing in the seat next to Oliver. “Kill me.”

“I refuse.”

“Please?”

“No, Percival. I plan to marry you, dumbass, and that means you have to live past eighteen.” Oliver explained, voice quiet. “What’s wrong? Do you need an off day or something?”

Percy looked at his empty plate. “It would be nice… But there’s so much to do! I don’t have time-

Oliver slapped a hand over Percy’s mouth, ignoring the open gasps and shocked looks. “No. Take a day off. No one will scold you.”

“Damnit, Oli, no! I’ve got too much to do!” Percy snapped. “I’ll be fine!” He watched Oliver’s eyes narrow, and he gulped in fear. “Oli…?”

Go back to the dorm,” he ordered. “I’ll see you at lunch and not a fucking minute sooner.” Oliver stood up, grabbing his bag. “I will speak to the professors. Take a day to yourself, Percival.”

Percy withered, nodding. “Right. I… I guess I can read in the library…?”

“Read what?

“Fairytales…” He answered warily, unsure if Oliver would accept his answer.

“That sounds perfect.” Oliver replied happily. “Well, see you at lunch!” He left the Great Hall, fully aware that people were staring in awe.

Percy shrank in his seat, fumbling subtly for his bag. Once his hand reached the handle, he bolted from the Great Hall with watering eyes.

The library was always peaceful, an easy escape from his siblings and from stupid house rivalries. He picked up a random book, thinking about his time at Hogwarts.

He sighed as he heard an outbreak of bickering. As he stood up, he realized it was a group of Slytherins. Third and fourth years, actually. “Strange… Hey.” He called as he got closer. “Is everything alright over here?” He asked quietly, still holding a book in his hand.

Malfoy shrugged. “Yes, Weasley. We’re fine.”

Percy gave Malfoy a searching look before throwing his stone. “Prewett. My last name is to be Prewett, once I leave school.”

The Slytherins gaped at his statement. Malfoy broke the silence - as only he could - with a sneer. “You? Taking your mother’s maiden last name? Why?

Percy raised a brow. “Malfoy, would you ever consider donning the Black name?”

“Well, no but-”

“Why not?”

“As powerful as the name is, it isn’t one I want to claim. It’s my mother’s.”

“My point exactly.” He said. “As… powerful… as the Weasley name is, it isn’t one I want to claim. I’m not the Weasley Heir. I am the Prewett heir. As such, I’d like to use that name as my own.” He smiled indulgently at the group, “Besides, even if it is my mother’s maiden name, it is the more powerful one. My father and grandfather rather handily destroyed the family reputation.”

Malfoy scowled, properly mollified. “I suppose you have a point.” He held his hand out for Percy to shake. “May we meet in the hall of the Wizengamot.”

“May we do so,” Percy replied as they shook hands. “Now, if you don’t mind too terribly, I’m going to continue with my book. Oliver was quite firm that I refrain from working today.”

Malfoy snorted. “Wood, you mean? That’s a new one. Still, have a fine day, Prewett. I…” he hesitated, “I will send you a letter later.”

Percy nodded. “More than fine. Good day.” His eyes glinted as he pushed his glasses up his nose. “And don’t think I haven’t noticed that a number of you are skipping class. Do it again and I will be deducting points.” He winked and walked off, already planning what books to read after lunch.

After all, why only take the morning off on such a nice day?

Oliver smiled as a very relaxed Percy sat next to him during lunch. “How are you, dearie?”

Percy rolled his eyes, flipping Oli the bird in a rare display of immaturity. “I’m fine, Oliver. And I hate that pet name, why do you constantly call me that?”

“Cause it gets you annoyed,” he teased. “Anyway, what’d ya read?”

Eyes lit up, Percy showed Oliver the copious note he’d taken on the storybooks. “Oh, Oli, do I have a story for you!”

The Great Hall quieted down, not-so-subtly listening into the conversation. It was strange, so alien, to hear Percy talking with such enthusiasm.

Professor McGonagall walked over, expression wary. “Mister Weasley, are you quite alright?”

Percy blinked. “Yes…? Is there anything off about me today?” His eyes widened in panic as he ran his hand through his hair, “Did the twins manage to change my hair color again?!”

She shook her head fondly, “No, Mister Weasley, they did not. However, in your near seven years in this school, I have never seen you so… carefree.”

At that, he sighed in relief and shrugged. “Mm, I suppose.” He didn’t have a logical answer to her observation, since it was true and accurate. “Today has just been rather calm. Oliver here,” he said pointedly, “was extremely insistent I don’t do anything related to my future today.”

She nodded. “I see. Well, Mister Wood had the right idea then. Have a good day, Mister Weasley.”

Percy bit back his correction. He knew, deep in his soul, that correcting her would only cause issues in the short term with no long-term benefits. “I plan too, Professor.”

The forest was… pleasantly loud that afternoon. Percy walled through the trees, letting his mind wander.

He knew, somewhat instinctively, that he wasn’t normal. Emotions were never his strong suit. Often, it felt like his emotions were mere drops in a full bucket of void-like water - easily dismissed and more easily consumed by the void. “I wonder. Will I be able to keep going?” He asked the sky, sighing heavily.

Quick hoof steps approached. “Child of man, leave these woods.” The centaur ordered, a bow in his hand. “It is not safe here.”

Percy shrugged. “Alright. Thank you.” His emotions tried to rise, but he didn’t quite care. “The stars are quite clear tonight, aren’t they?” He asked as he walked.

The centaur looked up at that, then hummed. “Indeed. Do you hear their wisdom, child?”

“Sometimes, it feels like that’s all I can hear.” He muttered. “Like a rising storm, threatening to hold me captive for the rest of time.”

“I see.” The centaur paused, knocking an arrow into his bow. “Do not move.”

He looked around, otherwise not moving. His eyes landed on a dog, large and pitch black. “Hello there, doggy. Why don’t you come here?” He knelt down very slowly, holding his hand out.

The dog cautiously stepped forward, sniffing Percy’s hand, then laid down.

“Good boy.” He transfigured a twig into a rope and carefully tied it around the dog’s neck. “Come on, boy, let’s get you to the castle.”

The centaur watched passively. “Be wary, child of man. The stars do not lie.”

“Sometimes… I wish they did.”

The dog followed obediently as Percy went inside, careful not to step too hard on the stone floors. Its paws ached from overuse and numerous scratches.

With a sigh, Percy opened the prefect bathroom and got the dog under one of the showerheads. He turned the water on and took off his robes and shirt, stepping under the stream.

Dirt, leaves, and bugs washed away quickly, gone to the bottom of the lake. “There we go,” he whispered, “now you look like a proper death omen.”

The dog yipped happily, bumping its nose to Percy’s palm.

Percy smiled weakly. “Well, come on then. Let’s see if the Professor will let me keep you around.” A thought struck him. “I think I’ll call you Grim. It’s certainly fitting.”

Chapter 2: [ October 31, 1993 ]

Chapter Text

Percy woke to screams. Running the common room, Grim on his heels, he saw the third year boys collectively panicking. “What’s going on?! What happened?!”
Ron looked at Percy with truly haunted eyes. “Percy. I think Scabbers is an animagus.”
… what the fuck. Okay, okay. Where is Scabbers?” Percy forced down all the panic and nausea that comment brought forth, determined to calm his brothers and housemates. “Grim, go get the professor.” Grim barked once and darted away.
Ron pointed at the table. “Right here. I-I stunned him. Something… something feels wrong, Percy.” His hands shook as he rubbed his eyes. “I dunno, it was like my magic had a mind of its own when I did it. I didn’t even say anything!”
Percy pulled Ron into a hug, a hand buried in the younger’s hair. “You’re safe, Ronald. I’m here. You’re safe.”
Professor McGonagall hurried in. “What’s happening? Mr. Weasley, explain.”
“Professor, could you cast the animagus spell on Ronald’s rat? I don’t know it.” A patent lie, but he didn’t care. He’d known it since fourth year, when the DADA teacher first acknowledged animagi.
Her eyes fixed onto the rat, her wand raising slowly. “Of course I can, Mr. Weasley.”
“Don’t look, Ronald,” Percy whispered as she said the spell. “Don’t look.” As predicted, ‘Scabbers‘ transformed into one Peter Pettigrew. Percy took a long, controlled breath. “Professor,” his voice shook, “I think the boys should stay with Oliver and I. Just in case.”
She nodded without looking at him. “Permission granted.”

Oliver didn’t bat an eye at Percy bringing the third years into their room. “Sleepover?”
“Essentially.”
“Sweet.” He summoned extra blankets and pillows, laying them out over the floor. “Pick a spot.”
Percy watched as the boys awkwardly laid down, all of them terrified. “He can’t get to you again,” he said, trying to sound comforting. “Oliver and I are both seventh years, we’ll protect you.” Oliver raised a brow questioningly, but nodded all the same. “Please, try to sleep.”
As the boys settled, Oliver motioned for Percy to sit with him. He cast a one-way privacy ward. “Percy, what happened? Why do we have all five third-year boys in our room?”
Percy explained, voice unnaturally flat. “-and now I seriously want to commit murder,” he finished mildly.
“Ah, I see.” Oliver looked over the boys and lowered the ward. “Look, go back to sleep. I’ll keep watch.”
Percy faked a grateful smile, then climbed under his covers. After fifteen unrestful minutes, Percy felt someone definitely smaller than Oliver climb in. “Yes…?” He whispered.
“I… can I sleep with you? Please?” Ron muttered, body shaking. “I’m scared.”
Percy hummed, slinging an arm over Ron’s torso and holding him close. “That’s okay with me. Sleep.” The warmth of Ron’s body made Percy want to die. It was deeply uncomfortable, yet nostalgic. For many years, Ron had come to him after nightmares and pranks, and Percy would be lying if he said he didn’t miss it.
After Percy closed his eyes, sleep came quickly.
Not a single person in that room woke up in time for first period. They all slept through the bells, not that the Professors minded. News of Peter Pettigrew living as Ron’s pet rat (and Percy’s pet before that) spread like wildfire, after all.

Chapter 3: [ November 2, 1993 ]

Chapter Text

Percy groaned in annoyance. “Are you kidding me?” He glared at the stone-faced auror in front of him. “No, genuinely, are you kidding me?”
The auror shifted uncomfortably. “Listen, Mr. Weasley, I’m required to ask-“
“-about how, as a bloody five-year-old, I supposedly knowingly took in a dead man disguised as a bloody rat?!” He interrupted waspishly, arms crossed over his chest. “Excuse me for being insulted, why don’t you? Who the hell do you report to?”
The auror scowled, but flagged down a large man from across the room. “Auror Shacklebolt! He wants to speak to you!”
Auror Shacklebolt walked - marched, rather - over, looming over Percy. “How can I help you?”
Percy held his hand out, “Hi, I’m Percy Weasley.”
“Kingsley Shacklebolt.” They shook hands.
“Lovely to meet you.” He took a steadying breath. “This absolute dunderhead quite effectively accused me of having taken in Peter Pettigrew as a five-year-old. Knowingly.”
Kingsley raised a brow. “I see. Auror Johnson, what have I told you about implications?”
“Not to…”
“Precisely. Sit this out. We’ll be discussing this later.” His expression didn’t change as he looked back at Percy. “I apologize, he’s done this before. Now, I only have one question to ask.”
“Please, go ahead,” Percy said, audibly disinterested.
“Did you have any idea your pet was an animagus? In the later years of having him, I mean.”
“No, sir. Not even a clue, much as that hurts my pride.” He shrugged helplessly. “I’m not sure what clued Ronald in, but I’m glad it happened.”
“As am I.” Kingsley handed Percy a card. “I will reach out to you about this incident at a later date. Please expect my owl.”
“Of course, of course.” Percy paused as he took the card. “Actually, while you’re here, do you have any knowledge on legally changing family names? I’ve been looking, but I can’t find anything useful or current.”
Kingsley raised a brow. “I will certainly look into it for you, Mr. Weasley. I don’t require an answer, but are you intending to change your name?”
“Perhaps. Depends how much work it entails.” He answered honestly.
“I see. I’ll write to you, Mr. Weasley.” Kingsley walked back to his people, leaving Percy alone.

Oliver had known Percy Ignatius Weasley for a full seven years and knew exactly how his friend processed emotions and thoughts. He knew, as well, that if Percy deemed an emotion too annoying, he would attempt to talk through it before getting frustrated and finally ignoring it.
So, when Percy remained silent, it was his mission to make Percy talk. “Percy,” his voice was low, “a fire whiskey for your thoughts?”
“Go away, Oli.”
“Ah ah, I gave my offer.” He countered. “What’s wrong? Talk to me.”
Percy sighed, pinching his nose angrily. “Oli, shut up. I need to focus.”
“On what?
“This paperwork, alright?! I’m changing my family name if it bloody kills me!” Percy slammed his quill into the inkpot and stormed from the room.
Oliver looked over the paperwork. “Holy shit, he isn’t kidding. Hm, Prewett? I mean, whatever he prefers.” He looked at the door, wondering if he could sooth Percy before curfew hit. “Time to get to work, then.”

Percy returned at curfew to small fairy lights all around the room and a tray of toffees on his desk. He blinked rapidly. “Oliver?”
Oliver looked up from his book. “Hey, babe. I’m sorry for pushing you earlier. I should’ve backed off.” He rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “I’ll help you with the paperwork?”
Percy glanced at the tray. “You didn’t have to.”
“I know.”
“How’d you get the toffee?”
“I asked your brothers which path to take to Hogsmeade.”
“Ah.” He started. “Wait-“
“Oh hush,” Oli teased. “You won’t give me detention. I know it.” He motioned for Percy to come closer. “Cuddle?”
Percy hesitated, then stripped off his robes and undershirt. “Cuddle,” he agreed as he laid down beside Oliver. “Read to me?”
“Of course, babe.”
Percy fell asleep in Oliver’s arms, tattoos laid bare for the world to see.
Oliver traced the lines, sighing. “You need more breaks, Percy,” he muttered solemnly. “Gods, I love you so much. I can’t wait to put a ring on your finger and a necklace around your neck.” He stared at the ceiling, thinking hard. “Actually… do you even want a necklace? Hm.”

Chapter 4: [ December 25, 1993 ]

Chapter Text

Oliver waited for dessert to disappear from the table before tapping Percy’s hand. “Hey, babe, I’ve got a question for you.”
“Hm?” Percy looked at him, eyes bright with curiosity. “What?”
Oliver passed him a small, ornate box. “Open it.”
Percy blinked, picking up the box. He inspected the outside carefully, turning it over as he did. He didn’t notice the twins freaking out across the table, shaking each other like loons. “Oliver, what’s the question?”
“Open the box, you’ll see.”
He hummed and opened the box. “A necklace…? And a ring… Oli, that- wait. Wait, are you-“
“I am.” Oliver raised a brow. “So?”
“…” Percy took the ring from the box and slipped it onto his finger. “Yes. Gladly. Save the necklace for after the wedding.”
Oliver snorted. “A purist at heart.” He shook his head, taking the necklace back with a grin. “Love you.”
“Love you.”

Chapter 5: [ January 2, 1994 ]

Chapter Text

[ January 2, 1994 ]
Percy watched in horror as a bright red envelope exploded into flames before his eyes. “Oh no-”
“PERCY IGNATIUS WEASLEY, YOU BETTER HAVE A GOOD REASON FOR WHY PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL SET ME A LETTER-” Screamed Molly Weasley’s voice.
He forced himself to listen to the screaming, trying to make heads or tails of the strange situation. He had never been sent a hollower by his mother. Not once. Even Bill had gotten a hollower during school, apparently for sneaking into the Forbidden Forest.
“-AND WHEN WERE YOU PLANNING ON TELLING YOUR FATHER AND ME ABOUT COURTING OLIVER-”
He sighed, letting his forehead bang against the table. “Fuck my life.” Wordlessly, he waved his hand and the screams ceased. “I’m sorry about that!” He said to the Great Hall at large, not that anyone had really cared.
Oliver raised a brow. “You didn’t tell them?”
“They would’ve disallowed it. Mother doesn’t like you much.” Percy drained his cup and stood. “I’ll see you in Transfiguration.”
Oliver hummed. “That’s… certainly news to me. I’ll ask later, I guess.”

Ron poked his head into Percy’s room. “Percy? What was mum’s howler about?”
“Oliver and I will be getting married.” Percy looked over his book. “Oli gave me the ring on Christmas, after the feast.”
“Oh.” Ron lingered in the doorway. “That’s allowed?”
“Is what allowed?”
“Marrying another boy. Mum said-“
“Mother doesn’t approve of marrying the same gender,” Percy interrupted snappishly. “I would know. Charlie got married, muggle style, a bit before going to Romania and she went ballistic on him. I heard every word.” He sighed. “Should you decide to marry a man, do yourself a favor and ask for forgiveness instead of permission.”
“Are you… is she still going to be mad when we go home for summer?” Ron asked anxiously, “And I didn’t know Charlie got married-”
“Of course you didn’t,” Percy said gently. “Mum refuses to talk about it.” He scooted to one side of his bed. “Come here. You’re shaking, Ronald.”
Ron climbed next to Percy, eyes watering. “I don’t want you to leave,” he whispered desperately. “Please don’t leave like Bill and Charlie did. Please.
Percy smiled sadly. “I have to leave, but I won’t ever be far,” he said, voice soft. “At the very least, I’m always an owl away, okay? Oli doesn’t want to leave the UK, anyway.”
Ron sagged against Percy, relief radiating from him. “Good. I think I’d go mad if you left forever.”
“Ha, no, you wouldn’t.” Percy countered firmly. “You’re too smart to go mad for such a silly reason.”
The two fell into a comfortable silence as Percy resumed reading.
“… do you miss them too?” Ron asked eventually. “I… well, you never talk about them.”
“Bill and Charlie, you mean.” Percy thought for a moment, gathering his thoughts. “Yes and no. I miss them, sure, but I don’t miss living with them. Sharing a room with Charlie was… interesting, in the worst way.”
Ron snickered. “Too many creature books?”
“Entirely too many!” Percy agreed, raising his voice to watch Ron’s face brighten. “I mean, really, who needs six versions of the same book?” He shook his head. “Just unbelievable!”
Ron properly laughed at Percy’s theatrics. Finally, he sighed. “Do you think the twins’ll leave too?”
“Probably, yes.” Percy admitted. “Especially since mother has never approved of their interests. And,” he lowered his voice conspiratorially, “I have it on good authority that they’re courting someone. Shh, you didn’t hear it from me.” He poked Ron’s nose playfully. “I don’t know who, exactly, but they are.”
Ron blinked, surprised. “Wait, they’re courting the same person?
“Ronald, they’re split-soul, of course they are.” Percy raised a brow at Ron’s expression. “Don’t tell me you didn’t notice,” he accused.
“Well, kinda?” Ron huffed. “I tried to ask why they always know what the other is thinking, but they laughed at me…”
“Ah.” Percy hummed, summoning a book from his trunk. “Read this. It’ll explain everything.”
“Thanks, Perce.”
“Of course, Ronald.”

Chapter 6: [ January 15, 1994 ]

Chapter Text

Another howler exploded above Percy’s plate and drink. He pinched his nose, mentally preparing for whatever bullshit was about to be said.
“PERCY WEASLEY YOU KNOW BETTER THAN TO IGNORE ME AND YOUR FATHER! YOU’RE BEING ENTIRELY TOO CHILDISH AND ACTING LIKE SOME COMMON-”
Percy sighed and silenced the howler. “Bloody hell, my life is a joke.” He turned to the head table. “May one of you cast a howler ward? I’m rather tired of receiving them.” He asked, voice easily carrying over the bustling room.
Professor McGonagall shook her head. “Now, Mr. Weasley, you know we aren’t allowed to interfere with parental correspondence-“
“-unless it’s actively endangering or interfering other students.” He finished, unimpressed. “Professor, she is sending howlers! Those are, by definition, interfering.”
Dumbledore faked a cough before speaking. “If I may, I am willing to erect the ward as Mr. Weasley is seventeen.”
McGonagall sighed. “If you’re sure, Albus. On your head be it.”
Percy smiled slightly. “Thank you, Professor.”
“Of course, Mr. Weasley.” Dumbledore nodded once, then resumed eating.

Chapter 7: [ February 14, 1994 ]

Chapter Text

Percy had, many times over many years, partnered with Marcus Flint. In Potions, specifically, it was always the most convenient, as neither had another year mate in the class.
He sighed as yet another letter from one Penelope Clearwater. The fifth one that day, actually. “Marcus,” he muttered, holding the letter between his pointer and thumb, “can you burn this for me?”
Marcus’ brow quirked as he burned the letter. “She is desperate.”
“Obviously.”
“You’re in a relationship.”
“Indeed.”
“What a mess.”
“I agree.” Percy sighed, pinching his nose. “Say, Marcus, you’re well versed in pureblood tradition. Am I supposed to give Oliver a ring and necklace as well?”
“...” Marcus blinked in surprise. “You… weren’t taught…?”
“No.”
“Ah. Not… not even by your mother…?” He hedged cautiously, looking pained.
“No.” Percy repeated sternly. “Just answer the question, Flint.
Marcus sighed. “Alright, alright! Yes, you are, but it’s technically not required.” He glanced at the chalkboard. “We need to focus on the potion, but I’ll help you with it after. Deal?”
“Deal.”

Chapter 8: [ March 5, 1994 ]

Notes:

[ The idea of not-great-Arthur was inspried by "A Matter of Persceptive (Through the Veil)" by flowergrown! ]
[ The idea that Percy didn’t recognize Arthur as "his dad" is really interesting to me, someone who finds the logistics of wartime birthrates and civilian efforts really fun to research. ]
[ Also, the 'wartime birthrate' thing is why Percy and Oliver are the only Gryffindors in their year (in this fic). Realistically, they were born during the middle of a war. Honestly, the fact Molly had 7 kids (six pregnancies) during an active war amazes me. ]

Chapter Text

Percy snorted as a large tawny owl landed in front of him during lunch, a thick bundle of parchment tied to its leg. “Hi there, is this for me then?” He untied the bundle, humming merrily. As he inspected the seal, another owl landed. “... Errol? I… see. Come here, boy, come here,” he gently took and letter and stood. Errol perched on his arm, he left the Great Hall.
Oliver followed close behind, having grabbed the letters and Percy’s bag. “Percy? Percy, what-” He stopped short, as he saw Percy sitting on the owlery floor. “Love, talk to me, please.” Percy shook his head, a hysterical laugh forcing its way past his lips. Oliver held Percy through the episode, confused and worried. “I’ve got you, I’ve got you, I promise,” he whispered.
It took a long while for Percy to calm down. “Arthur disowned me effective this morning,” he gasped out, “as soon as my paperwork was approved.” A laugh. “He never did like me much, not even when I was little.”
Oliver hummed encouragingly, wanting to hear more. Wanting to know just how Percy had been hurt and affected by his parents negligence.
“I… I didn’t know who he was when he finally returned from fighting Voldemort,” he admitted. “I had never seen him in person. I knew he existed, true, but I didn’t know him. I knew my uncles better.”
“Oh, Percy…”
“It’s just what happened.” He buried his face in Oliver’s shirt. “He… when I asked who he was, a few weeks after he came home… He looked so disgusted, Oli. Like I was little more than a bug under his shoe.”
Oliver took a slow, controlled breath. “... I’m glad you aren’t going back.”
“So am I.”

Chapter 9: [ July 6, 1994 ]

Chapter Text

When Sirius Black transformed, Percy sighed and summoned two bottles of butterbeer. “Alright, spit it out.”
Sirius barked out a laugh, took a swig of butterbeer, and obliged. By the time he finished the story, Percy was pinching his nose. “What? What’s wrong?”
Percy shook his head. “What is it with me and having animagi as pets?” He sounded tired. “I just… Two! Both pets I’ve ever had!”
Sirius had the grace to look guilty. “Sorry, kid. I just… I needed someone level headed to help me keep cover until I knew it was safe.”
“I’m not mad,” Percy said. And he meant it. “Peter… Peter took advantage of a child. You? I found you and let you in, even if I thought you were just an extremely intelligent dog.”
Sirius huffed. “Well, I’m grateful you’re forgiving.” He blinked. “Hey. Actually. I want to take custody of Harry. Think you could point me in the right direction?”
“I start work next week. Sure. But we are never discussing this. You were never my pet, got it?”
He saluted playfully. “Of course. And once I’m a free man, I’ll help you get a new dog to name Grim.”
“... Thank you.”

Percy never did tell anyone Grim’s true identity. Not even Oliver.

Chapter 10: [ July 7, 1994 ]

Chapter Text

Percy stepped off the Hogwarts Express, expressionless. He didn’t react as Molly Weasley stormed up to him and started screeching. With a sigh, he stepped around her and called out into the crowd, “Oli! Marcus!”
Both looked, Oliver smiling and Marcus sneering, and ran over. Marcus stopped at Percy’s left side and Oliver took the right. “Everything okay, love?”
Percy snorted, “I’m fine, Oli. She hasn’t scared me since I was twelve. Marcus, I’m staying with you until the wedding, yes?”
Marcus finally cracked a smile, firmly ignoring Molly’s outrage. “Why, of course. Someone has to make you buy proper clothes. Come along now, the wedding won’t plan itself!”
Percy laughed as Marcus pushed through the crowd, feeling higher than a cloud as he left the station. He stopped and knelt down in front of Ron and Ginny. “I’m only an owl away, okay? I may have been disowned by father, but I will always be around for you. On my life, okay?”
Ron nodded, hugging Percy tight before darting off to meet the group. Ginny looked at Molly then wiped her eyes, “You’ll visit for my birthday at least, right?”
“I’ll certainly try,” he promised. “Do your homework and stay out of trouble for me.” He rejoined Oliver and Marcus, hoping against hope that he’d be allowed back to the Burrow just one more time.

Later that night, Marcus cringed as he read the invite list Percy produced. “Percy, I get that you love your siblings but maybe-”
“Ah, don’t finish that sentence.” Percy warned, brow raised. “I will invite all six, my parents be damned. I know Charlie and Bill will attend, or at least send a letter. The twins will sneak out, they are fifteen, after all. It’s only Ron and Ginny that might be forced not to attend.”
Marcus looked Percy in the eye, as if searching for some sign of doubt or an untruth, then sighed. “Alright. Alright, then they stay on the list.” He popped open a bottle of fire whiskey, “Want some?”
“Oh?” Percy looked up from his bag. “No, thanks though. Fire whiskey makes me feel like I’m dying.”
“... Percy, are you allergic to fire whiskey?”
“Perhaps.” he shrugged. “After the first few times I tried it, I just assumed I couldn't drink it and… stopped trying.” He summoned a glass from the cabinet and filled it with butterbeer. “But I can drink butterbeer. So I will!”
Marcus sighed dramatically. “Bloody hell, this’ll be a fun wedding, I think.”
“Thanks, Marcus. For everything.”
“Always. Weirdos stick together, yeah?”
Percy smiled brightly. He couldn't wait for the wedding, if only because he’d finally have a supportive family and, even better, a home.

Chapter 11: [ August 18, 1994 ]

Chapter Text

Percy wasn’t really interested in the Quidditch World Cup. But he knew Mister Crouch desperately wanted him (and Oliver, of course) to attend, so he sucked it up and went.
It was fun enough, if just because Oliver was freaking out the entire game.
Even better, he got to see his siblings and Harry. Harry was, thankfully, accompanied by one Sirius Black. Percy nodded subtly to Sirius, getting one in return.

Mister Crouch’s elf, Winky, trembled and mumbled for most of the match. Percy raised a brow, surprised by her continued presence. He looked around, trying to find anything amiss but found nothing.
It was only when Death Eaters started raising cane that he realized what had happened. “That mother fucker- OLI!”
Oliver whirled around, wand raised.
“Oli, find that house elf! Now!” Percy ordered, ready to sprint away. “I’ll find my family and get them out of here!”
Oliver nodded grimly and ran off.

The world was quiet for one terrifying second as the Dark Mark shot into the air. Percy couldn't breath, his siblings were here-
Noise returned when he saw them surrounded by aurors and being accused of- “Hey!” Too quiet, too weak. “HEY!” He tried again, glad to have caught their attention. “They’re kids, they couldn't’ve cast the mark. What child knows the spell?” The aurors had the grace to look ashamed. “I thought so. Ron, Harry, what happened?”
Oliver exited the bushes before either could respond, holding a house elf in one hand and an unconscious man in the other. “Harry, I have your wand,” he declared. “Assembled aurors, I think this guy is Crouch Jr? Couldn't tell in the dark.”
Percy swore. “He should be dead!” He looked at the two shivering boys, “Both of you need to sit down. You’re shaking.”

There was a lot of chaos afterward. Oliver’s suspicion had been dead on, much to everyone’s horror. And the house elf - Winky, Percy later learned - was freed from the Crouch family, though Percy was quick to bring her in. Oliver had silently raised a brow at that, but didn’t argue.

Percy stared at Barty Crouch Jr during the trial, gaze somewhere between pitying and hating. He listened closely, as did everyone, while Barty explained the torture he’d gone through both before and after his time in Azkaban.
When Barty finished, Percy turned to Fudge with a stern expression. “He needed help, not Azkaban. I motion to have him brought to St. Mungo’s until they think he’s ready to rejoin public life.”
Fudge paled at the idea, “But, Mr. Prewett, you can’t honestly-”
Arthur stood, expression grim. “I agree with him, Minister. I have a feeling this would not have happened if we showed Mr. Crouch Jr mercy all those years ago.” He didn’t dare look at Percy.
Percy, in return, refused to look at Arthur. “Minister, as your assistant, I insist we put it to vote.” He lowered his voice slightly, “And it would make you look quite good to the press, attempting to give mercy to a man who suffered under his father.”
Just as he hoped, Fudge slowly nodded and muttered about how Percy was obviously correct.
And even more as he hoped, the motion passed and a few medi-witches took Barty from the courtroom.

Chapter Text

Percy hummed as he walked down the wedding aisle, holding a bouquet in his hands. The trail of his robes acted as a train, a thin white veil shielding his eyes from view. Each step was purposeful and light. He could just barely hear Oliver humming the same tune over the wind.
All his siblings were in attendance. The twins, Ron, Harry, and Ginny managed to get their leave slips signed by Aunt Muriel, which Dumbledore gladly accepted, and all would be back at the school before the Yule Ball.
Oliver put his hands over Percy’s when Percy got to the altar. “You look ethereal,” he whispered.
You look ethereal,” Percy echoed breathlessly.
Magic gathered around them as they spoke their vows, twisting around their hands like rope. “Forever and always, our magic will join us and our love will ever burn.”
They kissed, hands still clasped on the bouquet. The gathered crowd cheered so loudy Percy almost wanted to cover his ears, but instead chose to laugh. “I love you more than anything.”
“I love you more than all.”
“May the years bless you, Oliver and Percy Prewett! Let us celebrate!”

The twins nervously went up to Percy during the reception. “Hey, Percy?”
Percy smiled. “Go on?”
“If we said we’re dating a Slytherin…”
He shrugged. “Oh, please, like I’m about to judge. Look, as long as he doesn’t hurt you, I don’t care who you love.” He lowered his voice conspiratorially, “And hey, if he does hurt you, write a letter to Flint. He’ll set the prat straight, got it?”
They brightened. “Thanks, Perce,” Fred sounded relieved.
“Having asked that!” George said excitedly. “We’re dating Montague. He’s… really nice. A bit brutish, but no more than Charlie.”
Percy laughed, “Then I’m not worried. Flint told me Montague was courting someone last year, I didn’t realize it was you two! Good job, he’ll treat you like kings.”
Somehow, Percy knew everything would be fine in the end. And he knew he would never have to worry about his siblings believing their mother, either.
After all…
“Percy Prewett!” Minister Fudge called, waving him over. “Please, I’d like to speak with you!”
Prewetts never failed to find the truth, even if the Weasleys did.

Chapter 13: [ Epilogue ]

Chapter Text

[ December 21, 2001 ]
Percy watched as Grim hunted gnomes, a book on his lap. “Oli, love, do you think we’ll ever bother adopting a child?”
Oliver poked his head out with a snort. “Depends, you ever planning on cutting your hours at work?”
“Screw off.”
“Exactly.” He smirked knowingly. “Look, cut your hours down to… we’ll say thirty, and I’m in.”
“Oliver,” Percy said flatly, “you work fifty hours a week.”
“Mhm. I do. But my job doesn’t force the kids to stay home.”
“Asshole.”
“Love you too, Percy.”
A flurry of owls descended on the garden, dropping letters at Percy’s feet before finding places to perch. He frowned, bending over to grab one at random. Grim barked out a warning, bounding over the assist. “Thank you, Grim,” he muttered.
Oliver left the house at that, expression troubled. “We never get this many letters.”
“I know.” Percy opened one and-
“A disguised howler?! The fuck-”
“HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, PERCY!!!!!” yelled the voices of the Weasley children. “WE KNOW IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME BUT DO YOU WANT TO COME BY FOR CHRISTMAS? HARRY AND SIRIUS WILL BE OVER!”
They froze. “Wait, they’re actually inviting us…? What about-”
“AND DON’T WORRY ABOUT MUM AND DAD! THEY SAID THEY’D PLAY NICE! OH AND HERMIONE SET UP A WHEELCHAIR RAMP FOR YOU!” Said Ron over the audible hustle and bustle.
Percy felt his eyes water. “They actually invited us. Oli, we’re going.”
Oliver nodded, kissing Percy’s cheek. “I expected nothing less. Wanna head out tonight, I assume?”
“Please. I’ve wanted to see Harry and Luna for ages, I just… never could find the courage.” He clicked his tongue, and Grim obediently stood next to Percy’s wheelchair. “And they already have a ramp ready, let’s make use of it.”

[ December 25, 2001 ]
Percy thoroughly enjoyed Christmas. Luna and Harry were probably the cutest pair he’d ever seen - and he’d seen Ron and Hermione. It was… nice. Really nice, actually. Even Molly and Arthur looking at him like he was utter filth didn’t damper his spirits. “Fred, George,” he said with a laugh, “I think you two need to come by my place sometimes. Honestly, all of you do. Merlin knows I can’t travel easily anymore.” Grim barked and climbed onto Percy’s lap. “Say, Harry, where’s Sirius? Is he still sleeping?”
Harry blushed. “Uh, he got a letter from Moony,” he coughed awkwardly, “I wasn’t about to ask anything more.”
Luna giggled airily, “It’s alright, Harry. I don’t think anyone would ask more. Padfoot and Moony are married in soul, I say.”
Oliver laughed. “Oh, that’s great. Luna, do you think you could convince them to put it on paper?”
She blinked. “Hm. I dunno. Maybe.” Everyone ignored Molly’s outraged chide. “I’ll try, though. It would definitely make it easier to celebrate their anniversary.”
Then, as if the universe decided the party had gotten too dull, the twins unashamedly blew up a pot. Montague sighed and stood, making his way to the kitchen, “Only you two can blow up a bloody pot and not make any smoke!”
Oliver raised a brow. “So. I’m curious. Are they planning on having kids? Ever? Or will their baby be the joke shop?”
Ron shrugged. “Probably the joke shop option. Fred and George seem pretty hesitant about being near kids.” He sighed as a baby started crying. “Shit. I’ll check on Victoire, Bill,” he said quietly. “Hermione wants kids soon, so I’d better start practicing!”
Bill snorted, but he was smiling all the same, “Have fun, Ronny.” He waited for Ron to get out of earshot, his expression grave. “Harry, are you planning on adopting Teddy?”
The room went quiet. Luna looked at Harry, confused. “What is he talking about, Harry?”
Harry summoned a butterbeer. “Give me a second.” He downed the bottle. “Okay. Tonks wants to leave England. She doesn’t want Remus to have custody of Teddy. Andromeda refuses to take custody because Teddy is very much a werewolf. Sorry I didn’t mention it sooner, Luna, I was just seriously thinking it over.”
She hummed. “I’m onboard. Little Teddy is a joy, and he’s just a toddler. If we start the paperwork before the New Year, we should have him before his fourth birthday!”
He sighed in relief. “Oh, thank god. Well, Bill, there’s your answer. We are.”
Bill nodded. “Good, good. If you need help with the paperwork, between Percy and I, you’ll be able to find help.” Percy hummed in agreement.

As the day wrapped up, Percy wordlessly thanked every deity he could think of. Sure, he was forever in a wheelchair. Sure, he had no chance of ever having children. Despite it all, his life was amazing. Never would he regret becoming Percy Prewett, and never would he regret being the best brother he could. “Oliver.”
“Yes, love?”
“I think… No, I know my life is perfect. I’m so glad I chose you.”
Oliver kissed Percy’s forehead. “I’m so glad you chose me, too. I love you.”
“Love you more.”
“Love you most.”

Notes:

[ Just a little funny tidbit. In my original notes, this was called "Percy is a Badass, not a Weasley" and was going to detail Percy changing his name and separating from the Weasley family entirely and regretting just about none of it. ]
[ Clearly. That changed. ]
[ And I regret nothing :) ]
