Chapter 1: You Never Asked (So We Didn't Tell)
Chapter Text
The mere action of stepping into a terminal made Hinata Shoyo hate airports.
When he had woken up earlier that day, he wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. He had never been in an airport, let alone on an actual plane. He tried not to get overwhelmed just thinking about it.
The terminal wasn’t nearly as busy as he thought it was going to be. Maybe it’s because his mom urged him to get there extra early, or maybe it’s because not many people want to fly to Brazil on a Tuesday afternoon.
No matter what reason it ended up being, Hinata at least knew one thing for certain while standing in that much too quiet terminal: there was a warm hand clutching his wrist.
He turned his gaze on the hand clutching his wrist; the dexterous fingers and scratchy calluses are ones Hinata’s all too familiar with.
For just a millisecond, Hinata was almost too scared to look up, afraid of what he might find. But with the rasp of just a few words, Hinata had never felt more assured than in that moment.
“I’m going to miss you, you know?” It was a quiet, soulful whisper. Hinata wanted to bottle it up and take it with him to Brazil. Hell, he wanted to bottle up Kageyama and bring him to Brazil.
3 years. Besides the occasional visit, he’d be away from Kageyama for 3 years.
When Hinata finally looked up at Kageyama’s face, he finally broke. The anxiety, fear, and sadness that he’d been slowly building up over the past 6 months was finally released. Hot tears welled in his eyes as he gazed at Kageyama.
The icy ocean he had gotten so accustomed to looking into was now sparkling with unshed tears. With all the emotions swirling inside him, Hinata only vaguely registered the fact that this was the first time he’s seen Kageyama get teary eyed.
Seeing such raw emotion on a usually emotionless-looking Kageyama was so jarring that Hinata couldn’t help the hiccups and sniffles he unashamedly let out.
When Kageyama blinked, and his previously unshed tears fell, something inside Hinata broke for the second time that day. He launched his arms around Kageyama and found purchase in the first fistfuls of T-shirt he could get a hold of.
Now full on crying, Hinata couldn’t dwell on all the judgey stares he was getting from fellow passengers. All he could think about was Kageyama.
Kageyama and his perfect nail care and deliciously smelling cologne. His passion for volleyball and bedroom that was always freezing cold. His awkward smile and horrible social literacy.
But besides all the quirks that made Kageyama who he was, Hinata focused on the most prevalent definitive: his love.
He basked in the love that Kageyama showered him in. And when Kageyama returned the squeezing hold around Hinata, he absolutely melted.
A head of ebony rested on top of Hinata’s as his body shook with stifled cries. Fingers slowly traced circles around his lower back as arms continued to squeeze him tight. His nose was shoved into Kageyama’s chest, filling each breath Hinata took with the scent of him.
All Hinata could do was squeeze his eyes shut against the world and commit every last detail of his boyfriend to memory. God, Hinata hated airports.
When he finally started to pull back, and most definitely noticed tears and snot on Kageyama’s shirt, Hinata felt slightly better.
“I’ll be back before you know it.” Hinata sniffled, releasing his iron grip on Kageyama’s shirt.
As Kageyama wiped the moisture from his eyes, cheeks reddened from the affair, Hinata tried to devour every last glimpse of him.
The immediate smirk, though Hinata noted was less scary on a post-crying Kageyama, had him grinning in response.
“I’ll be waiting, Shoyo.” In his eyes was a challenge and a promise, one Hinata would be sure to keep Kageyama honest on. Right now, Hinata could only meet Kageyama’s grin with a watery smile, but he knew in due time, he’d be standing on the opposite side of the net returning the exact same smirk.
It had been 2 years since Hinata landed in Brazil and if he was being honest, the time had gone by very slowly.
Between visits during holidays and the grind of beach volleyball, Hinata fought ever-encroaching loneliness. Sure, he had Heitor and Nice to keep him company almost daily, but when they weren’t around he felt lost.
He missed seeing his mom and sister. He missed hanging out with Yachi over the weekends. And most of all, he missed Kageyama.
He tried not to count down the days till he went home, but when he was alone in his room with only the stars for company, his mind had a habit of going there. Whenever he thought about it, his chest ached and he was consumed by the overwhelming feeling of homesickness.
When he was homesick he thought of Kageyama, and when he thought of Kageyama he thought of volleyball. But without a partner to practice with late at night, Hinata took up the next best option: running.
He wasn’t exactly sure what possessed him during his first week in Brazil, but he knew for certain that running always made him feel better. Though he would never tell Kageyama, Hinata realized he was using him as inspiration for his late-night jaunts.
By the time they got together, Hinata had already noticed Kageyama’s running routine. He first noticed it when they were at Nationals in their first year. No matter the fact that they had a big game the next morning, Kageyama would always lace up his tennis shoes and go for a run.
So, in his likeness, whenever Hinata was feeling homesick, he’d throw off his covers and suit up for a run. The salty air in his lungs and the ocean breeze on his skin always helped quiet his mind.
The day was sunny and Hinata could feel the heat baking on his skin. Regardless, he welcomed the sun’s embrace and stood poised in the sand.
The team they were playing against was better than their normal opponents. It made Hinata giddy throughout the whole game, with each point only adding to his excitement.
When Heitor and him scored a rather nasty point, their quick connection to blame, Hinata let a full and blinding smile grace his lips.
The crowd surrounding their court went wild at change in score, collectively cheering and chanting for the mixed pair. Even with a few spectators calling out for Ninja Shoyo, Hinata was too focused on the task in front of him to hear.
As he stepped up to serve, he couldn’t help but bask in the atmosphere. He could feel the adrenaline coursing through his veins, the sweat drip down his chin. He could feel the scratchy sand in his toes and the dampness of his shirt.
This is what he’d been training for. The feeling of heightened sense accompanied with his ever growing technique was the culmination of the past 2 years.
It made all the blood, sweat, and tears worth it. It made leaving home, fresh out of high school, worth it. It made running during all those sleepless nights worth it. It made being away from Kageyama worth it.
He served the ball, the salty air lifting his wings higher as he jumped. The sting on the palm of his hand was completely ignored as the exhilaration of a service ace filled his body. The game was finished shortly after that.
While taking a break, Hinata checked his phone, secretly hoping for a text from someone 12 hours ahead of him. The message almost felt extra sweet to him with the fresh win still coursing through his system.
I can call you tonight.
It was nothing fancy, of course, but it still made Hinata grin like an idiot.
“What’s got you all love-sick looking?” Heitor called out, effectively snapping Hinata from his thoughts.
“Nothing,” Hinata replied, ”I just love volleyball.” He clicked his phone off and set it down.
“Sure you do.” Heitor grumbled back, suspicion in his knowing gaze.
Stars twinkled lightly outside of Hinata's window but the screen in front of him showcased the exact opposite.
Kageyama stood before him, hair mused from sleep, with a toothbrush hanging from his mouth. His eyes were still slightly squinted as if the sunlight from his bathroom window was personally offending him. Hinata couldn’t help but admire how domestic he looked. His heart ached at the thought.
Nights like these were always the hardest. With Kageyama being unbearably charming and Pedro, his roommate, being scarily absent, Hinata tried to keep the homesickness at bay. The last thing he wanted to do tonight, after playing beach volleyball all day, was go for a run.
He shook his head slightly to try and clear his thoughts.
As Kageyama rinsed his mouth and rambled slightly about his volleyball agenda, Hinata continued to watch. It wasn’t until he got impatient enough with his feelings that he interrupted Kageyama.
“I miss you.” Hinata interjected, effectively freezing Kageyama mid-sentence.
“I miss you too.” Kageyama offered, eyes softening so minutely that only Hinata, with his years of practice, was able to tell. “One more year.”
“Yeah.” Hinata distractedly agreed. Kageyama wiped his face with a washrag, letting the silence explore the space between them. “This is really hard.”
His eyes, though focused on Kageyama, were not actually watching him. The homesickness that was desperately clinging to his heart was being extra nasty tonight. He couldn’t seem to shake it, no matter how much he despised the thought of a run.
“When you come back,” Kageyama mused, pulling Hinata's consciousness to the present, “I’m totally kicking your ass on the court.”
Hinata knew Kageyama had said that on purpose, but he could never deny himself the pleasure of squabbling with his rival. The fact that socially and emotionally inept Kageyama always knew how to cheer him up annoyed Hinata to no end.
After a few nu uh’s and you’re going down’s, Hinata huffed out a breath. Like always, the crushing feeling of homesickness was now lighter. The smile Hinata flashed at Kageyama was filled with gratitude
After a few more minutes and some soft I love you ’s, the call ended. The momentary feeling of emptiness at Kageyama's departure was quickly replaced by exhaustion. As Hinata lay there, with stars outside his window, he only counted the remaining days once. After that, he was dead asleep.
“Nice kill, Ushijima-san!” Kageyama offered as his feet touched the ground. The connection between him and Ushijima was getting better every day. Even as sweat dripped in his eye and his chest constricted with effort, Kageyama basked in the satisfaction of the play.
Everyday he was getting stronger, pushing himself past his limits. Just like a certain someone all the way across the pacific ocean.
Just a couple more months , Kageyama reminded himself.
Ushijima’s gruff acknowledgment was the only thing that snapped Kageyama's attention to the present before the next serve. Kageyama chanced one more fleeting thought about his other half before promptly throwing himself into the push and pull of practice.
Because of scheduling, Kageyama laid sprawled out in his bed with the fan on, cooling the light sheen of sweat he had accumulated. The stars were already out, but it did nothing to cool his dorm from the summer heat.
Hinata, with his phone in hand, sat in the sand with the sun burning overhead. Currently, Heitor and him were taking a break in between sets, a rarity for the energetic ginger.
It was only a few more weeks before Hinata was back in Japan, but those few weeks seemed like years in Kageyama's eyes.
As Hinata rambled on about their current beach volleyball rankings and local gossip, Kageyama took the opportunity to really study his boyfriend.
He’s seen Hinata over video call a multitude of times, but because of their schedules, Hinata was usually the one tucked in for the night.
With the summer months in full swing, this was one of the rare days where Hinata had forgone a shirt, claiming something about tan lines. Kageyama wasn’t complaining.
The sun settled blazingly across Hinata’s shoulders, washing Kageyama's eyes in a sea of sun-kissed freckles. His slight tan lines from the tank top he frequented curved over lean muscle that had not been there a 3 years ago.
Intrigued now, Kageyama studied him a little harder. The face that jubilantly recounted his latest match with boyish charm and animated expressions looked more mature. His hair had gotten just a tad lighter from all the sun exposure and the muscles of his chest moved fluidly with his gestures.
Obviously Kageyama had found Hinata attractive before his departure, but he couldn’t help but be surprised by how much some hard work and sunshine could change someone. Kageyama could see the newly assured confidence in his movements, something the boy, no man , in front of him did not have 3 years ago.
This realization made him shiver. The anticipation of seeing his boyfriend in the flesh made his heart skip a beat, and the prospect of finally standing on the court as equals made him giddy.
“Oi, Tobio. Are you listening?” Hinata snapped, bringing Kageyama’s train of thought to a screeching halt.
“Of course I am.” Kageyama replied back defensively.
“Liar.” Kageyama knew he could never get away with lying to Hinata, yet he still grumbled everytime Hinata called him out on it. “Anyways, as I was saying, Yachi-san is picking me up from the airport. The jet lag is going to be awful.”
“I’m sorry I can’t be there to pick you up.” Kageyama sighed. After 3 years, Kageyama was almost gutted from the fact that he couldn’t pick Hinata up from the airport.
“Don’t be. It would upset me more to know you missed a practice match because of me.” Hinata offered him a smile.
Kageyama melted at the sight and forgot the tiny pity party he was having for himself. Hinata had always made it easy for Kageyama to forget things.
“We’ll get to see each other when I get back though, right?”
“Only if you win.” Hinata answered with a smirk, laughing at Kageyama’s fed up expression.

Chapter Text
Even though Hinata had a personal vendetta against airports, he definitely felt happier standing in the pick-up area than being on the actual plane.
The late summer air was hot and humid, a feeling Hinata was all too familiar with. It made him think of Heitor, Nice, and Pedro, his Brazilian family that helped him thrive for the past 3 years.
With a deep breath in his lungs, Hinata took in his surroundings. The airport was fairly busy, but it didn’t take him long to spot Yachi’s signature blonde hair amongst the crowd.
“Yachi-san!” Hinata yelled, catching Yachi’s attention after scaring her senseless. He made his way quickly over to her, dodging reuniting couples and hectic families.
When he was finally close enough, he wrapped his arms around Yachi and squeezed. Oh how he missed his friends. Yachi’s arms, though tentative at first, wrapped around Hinata and finally returned the gesture.
Being in Yachi’s arms made reality feel more real . He was finally back in Japan! He was finally back in the same country as Tobio .
“Oh my goodness! I barely even recognize you, Hinata-kun!” Yachi commented while pulling back from Hinata’s embrace.
“Really? But I didn’t get any taller.” Hinata replied, perplexed at Yachi’s observation. She studied him with a knowing look on her face, but whatever conclusion she had come to, she didn’t share with him.
“Quick, let's get out of here before traffic gets any worse.” Yachi offered, quickly setting off in the direction of her car.
“Just lead the way!” Hinata smiled while following Yachi’s swift pace. He didn’t mind Yachi’s eagerness, instead he welcomed it because he knew every step forward was a step closer to Kageyama.
Kageyama fumbled with his keys while yawning. He might be skilled with his hands in volleyball, but picking out his apartment key proved to be occasionally difficult for him.
Since they had to travel for the practice match, he was even more exhausted than usual. And right now, all Kageyama wanted to do was take a bath and crash out in his bed.
After finally getting his door open, he checked his phone while kicking off his shoes. Not being able to pick up Hinata from the airport had been weighing on him all day. It also didn’t help that his phone had been empty of texts from the ginger too.
While sighing loudly and making his way into the small kitchen, Kageyama grabbed a glass, filled it, and proceeded to chug the whole thing. He finished the glass, sat it down heavily on the counter, and wiped the excess from around his mouth.
“Did you miss me?”
Kageyama’s pretty sure he’s never jumped higher than at that moment. His heart flew out of his chest, pushing his muscles to turn and face the intruder. He was ready to fight, even if his mind screamed to take flight.
His heavy breathing calmed down just a smidge when he realized someone was laughing at him. That Hinata was laughing at him.’
“Oh my god! You jumped like 50 feet in the air!” Hinata was bent over, grabbing his stomach as fits of laughter racked his body.
“Why you littl- I did not.” Kageyama stammered defensively.
“You totally did! You looked so stupid!” Hinata added on, continuing to laugh at Kageyama’s expense.
“You dumbass!” Kageyama scolded while pushing his way out of the kitchen like a man on a mission. Realizing the danger he was in, Hinata immediately sobered up and shot down the hallway. “I’m totally gonna kick your ass.”
Stomping down the hallway, Kageyama followed Hinata’s voice, determined to make him pay. As he opened his bedroom door, he tried to call out for him, but was immediately silenced with a mouthful of orange hair.
Hinata’s firm grip was steeled around Kageyama, not letting an inch of space get between them. His head was nuzzled into Kageyama’s neck and he rocked unsteadily on his tip-toes.
Finally realizing who was in front of him, Kageyama returned the brace ten-fold, clutching his boyfriend as tight as he could.
Hinata was here . He was touching Tobio with flesh and blood. Kageyama almost couldn’t believe it.
He nuzzled deeper into the orange strands that brushed his face. They were shorter and lighter than the last time he saw them. He breathed deeply, inhaling the exact same scent, now with an undertone of ocean, that he had committed to memory over 3 years ago.
The body he wrapped up in his arms felt sturdier than what he’d seen over video call. The muscles that now corded over Hinata’s body were strong and lean. Kageyama couldn’t help but run his hands lightly over Hinata’s back in awe.
Pulling back ever so slightly, Kageyama was blinded by a smile so bright that he was almost certain the sun had taken up refuge in his bedroom.
“Hi.” Hinata breathed, eyes sparkling in a way Kageyama couldn’t help but melt at.
“Hi.” He whispered back. He wanted to say more, question Hinata, scream at him even. But, with the look in his boyfriend's eyes, he was rendered utterly speechless.
Much like his speechlessness, the only word his brain could supply him with was: soft. That’s because soft lips pressed to his so tenderly that Kageyama hesitated with shock. It wasn’t until Hinata pulled back for air that Kageyama realized what was happening.
Snapping out of it, Kageyama grasped Hinata’s face in his hands and smashed their mouths together with an intensity that even Kageyama didn’t know he had in him.
He poured every emotion from the past year into the kiss. He tried to express his excitement, loneliness, lust, anxiety, and overwhelming love for Hinata with just the touch of his lips.
When they finally pulled back, Kageyama couldn’t help but stare. In that very moment, Hinata looked at him with such love and devotion that Kageyama went slightly weak in the knees. His hands were still on Hinata’s face when he felt hands ball even tighter around his shirt.
“Shoyo.” He whispered.
“Tobio.” Hinata replied, smiling softly.
After a life changing phone call, Hinata was thrust into pre-season training with full force. The MSBY Black Jackals had their first season game in less than 2 months and were determined to take the league by storm.
Every night, Hinata would stay back with Atsumu and Bokuto to practice. It seemed all three of them were on the same page about building chemistry and getting reps in. If they were lucky, Sakusa would even grace them with his presence. Tonight was one of those nights.
“Nice kill Omi-san!” Hinata praised, starry eyes trained on the nonchalant outside hitter. The only acknowledgement Sakusa gave to Hinata’s praise was a close lipped scowl and a slight nod.
“Yeah, Omi-Omi. Y’a sure are dazzlin.” Atsumu complimented with a smirk, a teasing tone on the tip of his tongue.
“To a dumbass like you, anything looks dazzling.” Sakusa spit, disgust prevalent on his face.
“Are my spikes dazzling too, Tsum-Tsum?” Bokuto asked, unaware of the argument he just defused.
“Sure Bok-kun. Whatever makes y’a happy.”
“Oh yeah!” Bokuto cheered, effectively ending their conversation.
As the night went on, Hinata lost himself in the work. If he didn’t fully commit himself, he’d think about a certain Schweiden Adler's setter instead, much to his annoyance.
Now that Hinata was holed up in Osaka with the Jackals and spent most of his day practicing, he rarely had time to see Kageyama. It seemed like the universe would never allow two professional athletes to be together. Their schedules were always too hectic.
On the off chance that they did get to hang out, their time was usually spent relaxing in one of their apartments or eating dinner together at a local izakaya. They were usually too tired to do anything else.
“What’s got y’a all spaced out, Sho-kun?” Atsumu probed, bringing Hinata back to reality. “Y’a got a hot date or somethin’ later?”
Unfazed, Hinata replied honestly. “Nope!” He wasn’t going to be able to see Kageyama until after their first match.
“Akaashi and I are having left-overs for dinner!” Bokuto interjected, energetic as ever. He’s promptly ignored though when Sakusa speaks up.
“Stop trying to impose your hopes and dreams onto him, Miya.”
“I’ll have y’a know that I have a thrivin’ love life, thank y’a very much.” Atsumu defended, clearly ticked by Sakusa’s assumption.
“Didn’t ask, don’t care.” Sakusa grumbled.
“That’s it. I’m not settin’ y’a the ball anymore, Omi-Omi.” Astumu huffed while turning around and crossing his arms.
“You’re such a child.” To this, Atsumu just stuck his tongue out at Sakusa.
With their antics pulling him from his thoughts, Hinata smiled at his teammates. Though they didn’t know it, they always seem to motivate him when he feels down.
The smack of a volleyball and the resounding roar of the crowd was all that Kageyama could hear over the sound of his own deep breaths.
Across the net, only a few meters away, a crowd of black jerseys surrounded a speck of orange. Kageyama could only watch on in shock.
After all those years. After all of the blood, sweat, and tears, Hinata had finally done it. The score board to Kageyama’s left confirmed this glaringly new reality with brightly displayed numbers: 26-24.
What brought Kageyama’s gaze back to the court was a certain ginger now standing right behind the net in front of him. The look in his eye was borderline crazed as his chest heaved recovery breaths into his body. Kageyama couldn’t make his way closer to the net fast enough.
“You’re here.”
“I’m here.” Hinata breathed. “Now I have 1,096 wins and 1,100 loses.”
All Kageyama could do was smile at Hinata like a maniac. His partner, his rival , was now standing on the exact same playing field as he was. His heart was so full he was sure it would burst.
The small izakaya was full after the match, packed to the brim with volleyball players who were much larger than the average person. The table was stocked full of half eaten plates and a concerning amount of alcohol.
“Did you see my spike, Tsum-Tsum? It was good wasn’t it?” Bokuto asked enthusiastically while slamming his drink on the table.
“For the last time, of course I saw it. I was the one who set it to y’a, Bok-kun.” Astumu replied, leaning slightly on an inebriated Sakusa.
“You’re too loud, Bokuto-san.” Sakusa mumbled, voice softened by his black face mask.
“I saw it! The ball went all WOOSH when you hit it!” Hinata jumped in animatedly. Despite his smaller frame, Hinata was far from a lightweight. It astounded Kageyama to no end when Hinata always out drank him.
Maybe it was the warm lighting or the few drinks running through his system, but Kageyama couldn’t help but stare at his partner. The slight dusting of red on his cheeks from the alcohol had his heart in a bind. And don’t even get him started on the way Hinata talked with his hands. Kageyama would never admit how charmed he was by this specific quirk.
“I will not lose next time, Bokuto-san.” Ushijima added, ever the man of few words.
“Me too! You’re going down Bokuto-san.” Hoshiumi yelled.
Kageyama wasn’t sure why they decided to tag along. Obviously, Kageyama had a reason to join in on the Jackals celebration, but he couldn’t understand what possessed Ushijima and Hoshumi to tag along too.
It didn’t matter much to him, though. As long as his boyfriend was near and the others talked enough for him to remain silent, he didn’t mind. He’d much rather support in silence.
“Get your filthy hands off of me, Miya.” Sakusa slurred. Over the multiple conversations happening, no one seemed to notice this comment besides Kageyama.
“That’s not what y’a said last night.” Atsumu teased, speaking softly to the drunk that was now fully leaning on him.
“Fuck off.” Astumu just laughed and adjusted his shoulder. Good for them , Kageyama thought.
Hoshiumi’s animated yelling and Hinata’s energy matching brought Kageyama back to the conversation at hand.
“So they call you Ninja Shoyo in Brazil?” Hoshiumi questioned with stars in his eyes.
“Yep! The beach locals and I got pretty close over the year.” Hinata replied. Kageyama could see the pride and slight sadness in his eyes at the mention of his former friends. Kageyama made a mental note to ask about vacationing in Brazil during one of their breaks in the future.
“Cool.” Ushijima muttered, though Kageyama was pretty sure he meant to keep that comment to himself.
“Nothing but the coolest from my disciple.” Bokuto praised, jumping into the conversation.
“I think I’m gonna take Omi-Omi home. He seems pretty out’a it.” Atsumu announced while slowly pulling a stumbling Sakusa to his feet.
“Aww. I didn’t know Omi-san was a lightweight.” Hinata pouted.
“Y’a learn somethin’ new everyday.”
Like the kindergarteners they were, their attention span was already onto a new topic of conversation as soon as Atsumu pulled a limp Sakusa out of their sight.
Kageyama sipped his drink and nibbled on room temperature food, content with just watching his boyfriend interact with his teammates. He would’ve been content with remaining this way for the rest of the night if the others hadn’t excused themselves after checking the time. It seemed professional athletes couldn’t handle staying out past 2 o’clock in the morning.
That’s how Kageyama found himself alone with a sleepy Hinata resting on his shoulder while he paid for their tab.
“Let's get married.”
Kageyama dropped his change.
“Wh-,” he took a breath to settle himself, “You’re drunk and need to go to sleep.”
“I’m not drunk.” Hinata slightly slurred. “I just want to be your husband.”
“This is a very shitty proposal, you know?” Kageyama deflected while picking back up the change he’d dropped. He needed to get Hinata home and put to bed. He just knows he’ll hear all about the ginger's raging headache in the morning.
“When did we ever need anything fancy?” Hinata slightly slurred, shifting on Kageyama’s shoulder.
“We don’t even have rings.”
“Yes I do.” Kageyama whipped his head to look at Hinata with wide eyes. The man resting on his shoulder just seemed seconds away from falling asleep. Kageyama didn’t know if his heart could take brushing this conversation off as the rambling of a half-asleep, drunk man. “They’re in the smallest pocket of my volleyball bag.”
“You’re so stupid.” Kageyama wasn’t sure what else to say. Hinata had that effect on him sometimes, with his over-energetic enthusiasm and borderline blunt encouragement.
“You love me, though.” Hinata stated as if there was nothing truer in the world. Kageyama looked down at the man on his shoulder who now gazed back at him. His eyes stole Kageyama’s breath from him every time. Kageyama had never seen anyone else with such light hazel irises that it bordered on gold.
“I do.” Kageyama never wanted to stop looking into Hinata’s eyes.
“Is that a yes, then? We’re gonna get married?” Hinata asked, still gazing up at Kageyama.
When it came to volleyball, Kageyama always relished in the feeling of thinking a mile a minute. There was just something so satisfying about being utterly focused and in tune with your own body. As a setter, Kageyama prided himself on thinking everything through to set his team up with the best possible chance to score.
But, behind Kageyama’s next word, there was absolutely no hesitation or second thought.
“Yes.”
Early the next morning, marriage papers were signed and rings were exchanged.
The band that sat snuggly around Kageyama’s left ring finger was a constant reminder of reality, no matter how much he thought he was dreaming. He could barely contain his smile on the train ride back.
“We’ll have to get necklaces for when we practice and play in games.” Hinata explained while taking off his shoes. They had decided to spend their afternoon in Kageyama’s apartment. “I know how particular you are about your fingers.”
“That’s a good idea.” Kageyama offered while following Hinata deeper into his apartment. “One of your better ones.”
“Hey! That’s no way to speak to your husband.” Hinata teased. The grin he wore as he whipped around to look at Kageyama fortified the teasing jab. Kageyama’s returning grin was one he only reserved for Shoyo, his husband .
“What’re you gonna do, divorce me?” Kageyama quipped back.
“Maybe.” Hinata’s response was stern as he tried, and failed, to be serious. Kageyama seriously doubted Hinata had any bite behind his bark.
“How do I make it up to you?” He countered, indulging Hinata in his antics.
“Hmm…” Hinata quirked up his face, pretending to be deep in thought. Kageyama’s heart squeezed at the sight. He didn’t understand why the simple things Hinata did affected him so severely. “Watch film with me?”
“Which game?” Kageyama asked, already grabbing the TV remote.
“MSBY Blackjackals vs. Schweiden Adlers.” The glint in Hinata’s eyes told Kageyama he was in for a long night. They were both about to nitpick each other's performances to the bone.
As harsh as that sounds, Kageyama wouldn’t have it any other way. It has always been their dream, Hinata’s especially, to keep getting stronger. This, though slightly masochistic, is just a means to getting there.
As they settled on the couch, side by side, Kageyama couldn’t help but stare at his silver band and Hinata’s matching gold one. He never would've guessed he’d be married to Shoyo when they first stood on opposite sides of the court, but he wouldn’t change a single thing for the world.
As the opening ceremony finished and the sound of squeaking shoes filled the small living room, Kageyama pressed a chaste kiss to Hinata’s forehead.
Out of his peripheral vision, Hinata’s resounding smile tested the seams of Kageyama’s heart. Kageyama didn’t know it was possible to feel this much happiness and love in one moment. He never wanted it to end.
“You totally should’ve set it to Ushiwaka-san on that last play. He had a clearer line shot.”
At this comment, Kageyama’s hand flew to Hinata’s hair, ruffling it roughly. Hinata was right, of course, but Kageyama didn’t have to be happy about it.
“Whatever, dumbass.” Kageyama grumbled as Hinata smugly settled back into the sofa.
They griped at each other throughout the night, only ending when they got too tired. When Hinata flopped on the bed, sighing as if the world rested on his shoulders, Kageyama couldn’t help but chuckle.
At this noise, Hinata got up and properly tucked himself in, all the while smiling softly at Kageyama. Kageyama couldn’t help but smile back. He wasn’t sure if it was from the elation he felt from the day or just Hinata’s affect on people, but he couldn’t stop grinning like a love-drunk fool.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile this much.” Hinata teased while poking Kageyama in the ribs.
“Watch it!” Kageyama swatted Hinata’s hand away. “There’s just been a reason to smile.”
“Aww. I love it when you’re sappy. Sappy-yama.” Hinata cooed, effectively turning Kageyama’s smile into a scowl.
“Ah! There’s the man I married.” Hinata pinched Kageyama’s cheek. The resulting tussle and fight left both of them breathless and with half of the blankets on the floor.
“Why are you so weird?” Kageyama asked, straightening his pillow in the process.
“Why did you marry a weirdo?” To this, Kageyama could only mumble a quiet whatever, dumbass as he rearranged the blankets around him. Once they were all tucked in and ready for bed, Hinata rolled to face Kageyama.
“I love you.” Hinata called out quietly.
“I love you too.” Kageyama answered.
Chapter 3: That's Rough, Buddy
Summary:
“I’ve never kept you a secret, Tobio.” Hinata puffed out a laugh. “They just never ask the right questions.”
Notes:
Writing this at 2am was interesting. Lowkey tweaking, lowkey eating!
Enjoy!
Chapter Text
Stepping into his room at the Olympic Village was a dream come true for Hinata. The dorm-like accommodations, with beds most likely too small for giant volleyball players, had Hinata’s heart stuttering with excitement.
As Hinata made his way deeper into the room, he whirled around to Kageyama. With his growing excitement, Kageyama’s nonchalant, veteran attitude made his eyebrow twitch.
“Can you at least pretend to be excited?” Hinata yelled out with exasperation.
“Yeah, Kageyama-kun. Yur makin’ the rest of us look like jittery newbies.” Atsumu added, popping his head into the room. He carried two bags of luggage in his hands, with a closely following Sakusa not far behind.
“You guys are jittery newbies.” Kageyama deadpanned, completely serious.
“Why y’a little sh-” Atsumu didn’t get very far into the room before Sakusa pulled him back by his shirt collar. It took some wrestling, ungodly strength from Sakusa, and Hinata’s poorly concealed laughter to finally get Atsumu away from Kageyama. Hinata was pretty sure he could hear Sakusa berate him all the way back to their shared room.
“I call the one by the window!” Hinata shouted, running to claim his spot. As Hinata jumped onto the bed, he realized it was slightly hard and obviously not built to last. He tried not to let this realization down him. He sometimes wondered why the Japanese athletes had to stay in the Village when the games were being hosted in Japan. He was SO going to miss his bed at home.
“Why don’t we just push them together?” Kageyama had already set his stuff in one of the corners of the room.
“You’re a genius.” Hinata breathed. As soon as the idea had taken form, he jumped off his own bed and started pushing it over towards Kageyama’s. The poorly made frame and mattress was no match for Hinata as he quickly settled the bed right next to Kageyama’s.
“There. Much better.” Hinata sighed, dusting imaginary dust off his hands. With the grin he flashed at Kageyama, he tried to pour all of his current feelings into it. This dream of his has been so many years in the making. Hinata almost wanted Kageyama to pinch him just in case he was in fact dreaming.
“You made it.” Kageyama, when he wasn’t being an ass, somehow always knew what to say to him. He could see the glimmer of pride in Kageyama’s eyes. It made his words that much sweeter. “Just wait until you step onto the court.” Kageyama’s accompanying smirk made Hinata’s heart beat in anticipation.
“I’ve waited far too long.” Hinata smirked back at Kageyama.
“I would’ve waited a million more years if it meant setting to you again.” Hinata’s heart was almost too full at this moment. He couldn't believe he was married to this man sometimes.
“Sappy-yama.” Hinata mumbled as he closed the distance between him and Kageyama. As Hinata wrapped his arms around Kageyama’s neck, he felt hands, as naturally as breathing, fall gently around his waist.
The kiss they shared was a mix of every emotion Hinata was feeling. He melted into Kageyama at the feeling of his soft, strong body enveloping him. His hands found purchase in the short hairs at the base of Kageyama’s neck, while the hands on his waist pulled him closer.
When they broke apart, Hinata couldn’t help but smile. As he gazed up at Kageyama, taking in the smile reserved only for him, he wished he could marry the man in front of him all over again.
When their lips touched again, Hinata tried to hold back his smile. The elation and happiness that flooded his soul couldn’t be tamed, as much as he tried. After failing miserably and bursting out with laughter when their teeth collided, Hinata drew back from Kageyama.
He wouldn’t have minded staying wrapped up in Kageyama’s arms all night, but it seemed like the universe had other plans for him. Those plans came in the form of a knock on the door and a too-eager Bokuto standing behind it.
As the Monster Generation of Japan’s National Team, nights out on the town were a sight to see.
As Hinata walked side by side with Kageyama, he observed his teammates' antics with a slight smile on his face. For once, he just enjoyed watching the chaos from a distance rather than be a part of it.
“Why do you get to room with Omi-san?” Bokuto whined.
“Because I’m Omi-Omi’s favorite.” Atsumu gloated back while throwing his arm around Sakusa’s shoulders. The look of just mild annoyance on Sakusa’s masked face did not go unnoticed by Hinata.
“Neither one of you slobs are my favorite.” Sakusa corrected, still under Atsumu’s arm.
“What! Who is it then?” Bokuto shouted, utterly intrigued with who Sakusa’s favorite was.
“Why would I ever tell you that?” Sakusa deflected.
“Because we’re not gonna stop pesterin’ y’a till y’a tell us.” Atsumu added.
“I would also like to know who Sakusa-san’s favorite is.” Ushijima piped in, walking quietly next to Hoshiumi.
The look on Sakusa’s face was one of absolute distaste and slight betrayal at being put on the spot. Hinata noticed that throughout this interaction, Atsumu had been attached to Sakusa’s hip.
“Fine.” Sakusa grunted out. “It’s Hinata-kun.”
At this admission, Hinata shouted a victorious, “Yes!” The rest of the group collectively groaned in defeat.
“Do you really mean that, Omi-san?” Hinata asked, a shining smile on full display. The only response Hinata got was Sakusa looking away in, what Hinata interpreted as, embarrassment.
As the group delved into different states of defeat over the admission, Hinata felt Kageyama shuffle impossibly closer. Their arms were practically glued together now.
As Hinata glanced up at Kageyama questioningly, the furrow in his brow and slightly pouty mouth made Hinata grin like a maniac. Kageyama was jealous .
“Are you jealous, Tobio?” Hinata whispered, nudging Kageyama with his shoulder.
“No.” He answered way too quickly. Hinata only grinned harder. Seeing Kageyama jealous was a rare sight, but one of Hinata’s favorites.
“Sure.” Hinata rolled his eyes. “We’re married, remember?”
By the time Kageyama grunted in response, the group had arrived at a local izakaya. The walking distance, though far for a normal person, was perfect for the athletes. It was their last chance to get out before pre-game training started. After that, they’d be holed up in the Village till they either won or were defeated.
As a larger group, they were able to settle around a table near the back, even if it was a tight fit. Atsumu fell in next to Sakusa, with Bokuto on his other side. Hoshiumi jumped in next to Ushijima so he could continue his conversation with Bokuto. This left Hinata and Kageyama to squeeze in next to each other, even though they would’ve regardless.
The first round of drinks and food was ordered and conversation flowed around Hinata. He was pulled into conversations with Hoshiumi and Bokuto about jumping technique, with Ushijima butting in every so often.
“When you plant, it’s like BOOM and WOOSH.” Hinata explained while raising out of his seat a little. As Hoshiumi described his own experience in unintelligible terms, Kageyama lightly grabbed Hinata’s shirt and pulled him back into his seat.
“What about you Tsum-Tsum? How do you jump?” Bokuto turned to Atsumu. It hadn’t been long but it seemed like everyone was flushed with a healthy dose of red on their face.
“I don’ know. I just kinda jump.” Atsumu shrugged after sipping his beer.
“What an insightful response.” Sakusa grumbled, just loud enough for Atsumu to hear.
“Whatever Omi-Omi. Y’a just love to hate on me.” Atsumu’s exasperation clearly had no heat behind it.
The conversation quickly changed topics after that, jumping from Olympic bracket predictions to old high school gossip. By the time the table was littered with drinks and even Ushijima was a little tipsy, the conversation had landed on the topic of love.
“Bok-kun. If y’a rub in our faces one more time about yur happy relationship, I’m never gonna set to y’a again.” Atsumu slurred, pointing an accusatory finger at Bokuto.
“Yeah, Bokuto-san! We’ve heard enough.” Hoshiumi jumped in. “What about you Atsumu-kun? You seeing anyone?”
Atsumu’s face flushed an even darker shade of red. “No! Wh-what makes y’a think that?”
“Your face gets a love-drunk look to it sometimes.” Ushijima explained, despite stumbling over a few words.
“Nobody asked y’a Ushiwaka-san!” Atsumu yelled back.
“You did, though.” Ushijima deadpanned, slightly confused.
“Whatever.” Atsumu mumbled.
“What about you, Omi-san?” Hinata asked. “Seeing anyone?” With Sakusa resting his head on his hands, eyes closed, Hinata doubted he’d even get a response. To his surprise, Sakusa cracked his eyes open and addressed Hinata.
“Yes.” He admitted with a slight slur. The table was thrown into chaos . After settling down from the news, Hinata winced at the ruckus he realized they were causing.
“Who? Do we know them, Omi-kun?” Bokuto asked excitedly.
“Tell us!” Hinata added on. As they all waited with baited breath for Sakusa’s answer, Hinata noticed the nervous gleam in Atsumu’s eyes.
“I’m seeing Ats-”
“Ok! I think we’re gonna get out’a here.” Atsumu interrupted, effectively silencing Sakusa’s speech. Out of the whole table, Bokuto and Hoshiumi groaned the loudest.
“He seems real intoxicated right now. So I think Omi-Omi just needs to shut up and go to bed.” Atsumu ground out, pulling Sakusa to his feet. As Atsumu guided Sakusa out of the izakaya, supporting the stumbling athlete, Hinata watched on. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but there was definitely something different about Atsumu and Sakusa.
“Well that was a waste.” Bokuto sighed dejectedly.
“I am quite surprised.” Ushijima mumbled quietly, mostly to himself.
“Nevermind the past,” Hoshiumi shrugged, “let’s focus on the future.” As Hoshiumi swung his piercing gaze around to him, Hinata tried not to shiver. “What about you Hinata-kun? You seeing anyone?”
“Not anymore!” Hinata enthusiastically replied. He wasn’t seeing anyone anymore. He was married!
“Ah, that sucks.” Hoshiumi sighed. “How long were you guys together?”
With a hazy mind, Hinata found basic math to be harder than normal. At this point, he was just going to guesstimate.
“A few years at least.”
“That’s rough, but there’s plenty of fish in the sea.” Hoshiumi consoled, nodding while patting Hinata’s shoulder. Hinata was slightly confused at the sentiment, but chalked it up to the copious amounts of alcohol in both of their systems.
“And you Kageyama?” Hoshiumi turned a raised eyebrow to the silent setter.
“Not anymore.” He replied bluntly. Hinata always found it slightly comical the way Kageyama talked about their relationship in public. While Hinata was enthusiastically honest to a fault, Kageyama kept his answers short and direct.
“Wow, my condolences to the both of you.” Hoshiumi shook his head with sympathy. Kageyama glanced at Hinata with a questioning eyebrow, but Hinata had no answer for him. He shrugged his shoulders in response.
“We’ll it’s getting late and we start training soon.” Hinata started to get up with Kageyama in tow. With an agreeing hum from Ushijima and an annoyed groan from Hoshiumi, the Schweiden pair also followed suit.
As they made their way back inside their Village room, Hinata tried not to fall while taking his shoes off. After successfully changing, they both collapsed into bed, not even bothering with the bathroom. Hinata knew he was going to regret it the next morning, but the dizziness filling his consciousness could care less.
“Night, Tobi. I love you.” Hinata mumbled, already half asleep.
Before sleep completely consumed him, he felt, more than heard, Kageyama rumble words soothingly into the night.
“Good night, Sho. I love you too.”
As the ball slammed down and the whistle blew, all Hinata could do was stand and breathe. They had put up a good fight. No, their best fight and it still wasn’t enough.
As Hinata stood there, gazing across the net, he tried to let the cheers of the crowd drown out his thoughts. He tried to just focus on breathing in and out, in and out, in and out .
Sweat dripped into his eyes and off his chin. His chest burned with exhaustion and his skin felt sticky to the touch. Hinata pulled up the hem of his shirt and wiped the sweat from his eyes.
He tried to convince himself that the burning in his eyes was from the sweat and not the sting of a fresh loss. When a firm hand landed on his shoulder, Hinata pulled his mind back to the forefront.
“Come on. We have to line up.” Kageyama ushered him to the end of the court, as calm and cool as when the game first started. Hinata couldn’t tell if that annoyed or impressed him to no end.
Once hands were shaken and post-game interviews were conducted, Hinata was released to the locker rooms with the rest of the team. With Coach Hibarida postponing their post-game analysis to the next day, Hinata made quick work in gathering his stuff before practically pushing Kageyama out of the door.
All Hinata wanted to do was go back to their room, shower, and then fall right asleep. The adrenaline drop after the game was no joke. He could barely keep his eyes open on the walk back.
As Kageyama scanned into their room, Hinata barely took his shoes off in time before he flopped onto their mattress.
“Oi! Get your sweaty ass off of the clean sheets!” Kageyama yelled, hauling Hinata over his shoulder as soon as he reached the ginger.
“Let me down, you dummy!” Hinata complained while squirming in Kageyama’s hold.
“Okay, but go take a shower. You smell gross.” Kageyama grunted, setting Hinata down gently.
Once Hinata had showered, he didn’t even wait for Kageyama to finish before he tucked himself in bed. With the adrenaline drop, as soon as his head hit the pillow, he was out cold.
It could’ve been hours or minutes, Hinata’s not too sure, but warm arms enveloped him from behind sometime later. The sensation roused Hinata from sleep, eyes cracking just enough to recognize the body as Kageyama’s before they closed again.
“I’m so proud of you. You know that?” Kageyama whispered into Hinata’s hair. In Hinata’s half-conscious mind, he wasn’t sure if this was real or a dream. Regardless, Hinata responded.
“Sappy-yama.” He mumbled, barely above a whisper.
The press of lips to his temple were enough to rouse him again, but the accompanying arm thrown over his waist was the catalyst that sent Hinata right back to sleep.
As Hinata tried to blink the sleep from his eyes, he could already feel Kageyama shuffling out of bed. Though their Olympic venture was over and they could actually sleep in for once, Hinata knew that Kageyama could never break his habits.
While rolling over to grab his phone, Hinata took the opportunity to properly rub his eyes and stretch against the stiffness already plaguing his muscles. He made a mental note to find Iwaizumi later for recovery stretches.
Before Hinata could unlock his phone, he was stopped dead in his tracks with the amount of notifications plaguing his lock screen. Being a professional, national, and now Olympic volleyball player meant Hinata was no stranger to the world of media. But, after looking at the sheer amount of activity surrounding his account, Hinata didn’t know what to feel.
“Woah.” He commented, loudly enough for Kageyama to hear.
“What?” Kageyama asked, hands still fussing with his shoe laces.
“For some reason, my accounts are getting blown up on all platforms.” Hinata explained. He unlocked his phone and opened one of the first notifications he saw. His curiosity was at an all time high.
“Are they talking about your performance from yesterday?” Kageyama’s footsteps were the only sound echoing through their small room.
“No.” Hinata hesitated. He had to read the tweet again in confirmation. “They’re talking about my… ring.”
Kageyama’s slightly furrowed brow was the only allusion to his slight concern. Hinata mirrored his look but with exaggerated confusion instead.
“Oh.” Kageyama made his way over to Hinata and sat down next to him.
Hinata looked on with mild surprise as he scrolled through the posts he was tagged in. In one particular post, there was a candid photo of him from yesterday's game.
It seemed like the photo had been taken seconds after the final whistle blew. When Hinata used his shirt to wipe the sweat from his face, he didn’t think anything of it, let alone consider the fact that his necklace was on perfect display for the world.
Of course the internet, as crazy as it is, would notice the wedding band on the chain. They never missed anything.
“Well, there’s nothing I can do about that.” Hinata shrugged while silencing and turning off his phone.
Hinata wasn’t the most active on social media and that wouldn’t change today. He always distanced himself, especially when the internet was talking about him, because he knew how mentally draining that rabbit hole could be.
“You don’t mind?” Kageyama asked.
“I’ve never kept you a secret, Tobio.” Hinata puffed out a laugh. “They just never ask the right questions.” Kageyama’s agreeing hum was reassuring.
Not wanting to let his day be overshadowed by the internet craze, Hinata did the one thing that he knew would center his mind: he challenged Kageyama.
“I bet I can pack my stuff up faster than you.”
“You’re so on.” Kageyama smirked before flying off the bed towards his suitcase.
Chapter 4: Very Interesting!

“H-how long have you been married?” The interviewer asked after trying to compose herself.

Chapter Text
The lights were slightly blinding as Kageyama sat in his chair. He couldn’t tell if his clothes were uncomfortable because of his nervousness or if it was just the way he was sitting.
To his right, crew members fidgeted with Hoshiumi’s mic-pack and touched up his hair. On his left, Ushijima sat starkly still with his signature expression. Behind the cameras, in a little lounge area slightly off center, the rest of his teammates sat. They had all already been interviewed and were waiting for Kageyama’s group to finish.
On Kageyama’s left side, a beautiful woman sat while crew members fussed with her hair and makeup. While Kageyama observed his other teammates being interviewed, he noticed the kind and calm approach she took to asking questions. Kageyama appreciated interviewers like her.
As crew members scurried out of the frame and the director gave his final notes, Kageyama took one last steadying breath.
“Good morning! My name is Kobayashi Hana and with me here today is Ushijima Wakatoshi, Kageyama Tobio, and Hoshiumi Korai.” The interviewer introduced cheerfully.
After the three of them said their greetings and thanks, the interview started immediately. It started off with group questions, which Hoshiumi mostly answered. Kageyama knew he wasn’t the most talkative person, and Ushijima wasn’t much better, so he felt okay with Hoshiumi taking the lead.
After that, the interview shifted to specific questions. Ushijima was first up and the interviewer spared no expense in grilling the stoic spiker with questions. It started out easy with score predictions, but near the end, Ushijima was being asked about his high school best friend, Tendou Satori.
“Thank you very much, Ushijima-san.” The interviewer smiled brightly. “Now let's move on to you, Kageyama-san!” Kageyama tried not to visibly tense as the whole room's attention shifted to him.
“So, Kageyama-san, what are your thoughts about the upcoming season?” She asked, her hands folded perfectly in her lap.
Kageyama tried to give as honest of an answer as possible, but decided to switch a few choice phrases for the sake of his reputation. The whole time he could hear Hinata in his head scolding him for his choice of words.
Kageyama knew that he was honest to a fault sometimes, but he was trying to get better. Every time he delivered something wrongly, Hinata always called him out. He’d call him Rude-yama before puffing out a laugh and turning away.
“Well, it seems we have an exciting season to look forward to, according to you. ” She nodded. “Speaking of excitement, your rival, Hinata Shoyo, was your teammate during this past Olympics. Can you tell us about that?”
“He missed a receive in the 3rd set?” Kageyama offered.
He wasn’t exactly sure what the interviewer was asking. Hinata being his teammate should have nothing to do with his performance on the court. Hinata had put his blood, sweat, and tears into being the player he was today. Being tied to Kageyama, in a volleyball sense, was no longer applicable. Didn’t the interviewer know that?
“Excuse me. Let me rephrase that.” The interviewer chuckled. “Was it difficult playing with Hinata-san? Was the animosity between you two hard to deal with?”
“Oh. Umm” Kageyama was still slightly confused. The interviewer made it sound like Kageyama didn’t like Hinata. And obviously that wasn’t the case. He very much loved Hinata. “We matched up well, considering I haven’t set for him since high school.”
The interviewer looked slightly surprised. “Oh?”
“As for animosity, I feel none towards him.” Kageyama continued honestly. Kageyama had no idea why, but the interviewer laughed brightly at this.
“Keeping it classy off the court! I expected nothing less from you, Kageyama-san!” Kageyama still wasn’t 100% sure of what she was referencing, but had to move past it when she asked her next question.
She asked him questions about his lifestyle and routines, which he answered with ease. Even the questions about his favorite songs or favorite foods, which Kageyama thought were unimportant questions, were answered smoothly.
“Very interesting, Kageyama-san!” The interviewer commented. “Now, some final questions for you.”
The glint in the interviewer's eyes made Kageyama uneasy. She looked almost too eager to ask the next question. Kageyama shifted in his seat slightly.
“You’re considered one of the most eligible bachelors right now in the Volleyball world. Is there a chance someone has already stolen your heart?” The interviewer leaned in slightly.
“I’m married.”
The whole studio went silent.
As the interview had gone on, some people tuned out or focused on different tasks, but this answer assured everyone's attention was on Kageyama.
His teammates in the lounge had stopped their quiet conversation to look at him with shock. Ushijima sent him a questioning look, while Hoshiumi looked at him with absolute horror.
The silence was finally broken when Hoshiumi yelled, “What!?”
“H-how long have you been married?” The interviewer asked after trying to compose herself.
“4 years.” The studio seemed even more surprised than before.
As the interviewer stumbled for what to ask next, someone from behind the camera grabbed her attention. Apparently she was running low on time and had to move on to Hoshiumi. Kageyama could tell she wasn’t pleased with having to abandon the interview, but felt better once the attention was put onto Hoshiumi.
Kageyama gladly zoned out for the rest of the interview until it was time to wrap up. They said their thanks, finished with some last minute logistics, and then were released to go home. Kageyama vaguely noted that the interview would be posted in 2 days, but completely forgot that detail as soon as he stepped into his apartment.

Chapter Text
Hinata chatted excitedly with a crew member as they set up his mic-pack. They seemed nervous, so Hinata tried to help them by being as friendly as possible.
When they finished, Hinata took his seat to the right of Atsumu, with Bokuto on his other side. Sakusa, on Atsumu’s left, sat with a face of horribly contained distaste as the crew member fussed with his mic-pack. Hinata couldn’t help but slightly laugh at the sight.
It seemed Atsumu had noticed the same thing as Hinata. “If y’a frown any harder Omi-Omi, it’ll become permanent.”
“Shut the fuck up, Miya.” Sakusa growled.
“Language!” Atsumu scolded. His eyes were teasing and the pouting of his lips gave away his barely contained laugh. Hinata always loved watching Atsumu and Sakusa interact. It reminded him of the telenovelas and soap operas he’d sometimes watch in Brazil if nothing else was on.
When a crew member finally got Bokuto to stay still, the director explained how the interview was going to go. Unlike a more traditional interview, the guys were going to be given envelopes with questions in them. Then, they’d each take turns reading a question out loud and nominating one of their teammates to answer.
Once everything was clear and set, they filmed their greetings and thanks before jumping right into it.
Bokuto started off the interview with an envelope that asked: ‘What brand of volleyball shoes do you swear by?’ He nominated Atsumu to answer because, as per common knowledge, he has a reputation for occasionally wearing some interesting shoes during practice.
Then it was Hinata’s turn. He opened one of the envelopes in his hand and read, “What’s your go to drink order when out with the team?” Hinata deliberated for a second. “I nominate Bokuto-san.”
“Oh my gosh, where do I even begin?” Bokuto started. Hinata knew Bokuto tried new drinks whenever dared to, which was surprisingly a lot. Once Bokuto enthusiastically listed his favorites, the crew had to cut him off because he started exclusively talking about Akaashi.
Atsumu opened an envelope next. “What’s the most embarrassing thing y’ave done while on a date?” Astumu’s grin was downright devilish. “Omi-Omi?”
Sakusa’s eyes shot daggers at Atsumu. “Do I have to answer that?” He grumbled.
“Of course y’a do!” Atsumu laughed. Sakusa just sighed and scowled harder.
“I was at a restaurant and spilled water on my pants.” Sakusa answered.
Atsumu and Bokuto’s responding laugh was enough to make Sakusa look even scarier. Hinata chuckled at the image in his mind too. He could never imagine Sakusa as anything but poised and clean.
“Y’a had piss pants?” Atsumu asked while holding his stomach. When Sakusa looked away, feigning not to answer, Atsumu had all the confirmation he needed to burst back out into laughter. Sakusa just rolled his eyes and opened an envelope.
“Did you have a high school crush?” Sakusa read out loud with slight distaste. “Hinata-kun.”
“Aww, I wanted a volleyball question!” Hinata pouted. He wanted to talk about his max vertical or how he receives line shots, not stupid Kageyama. “But yes, I did have a high school crush.”
“Who was it? Do I know them?” Bokuto asked. He turned to face Hinata and blinked at him with his big owl eyes.
At these questions Hinata furrowed his brow in slight confusion. Everyone knew who Kageyama was. Why was Bokuto asking this?
“You all know him.” Hinata said slowly. He figured Bokuto was just not having his brightest moment today.
“Him?” Atsumu froze. When Atsumu whipped around to face him, Hinata couldn’t understand why shock was written all over his face.
“...Yes?” Hinata answered questioningly. It was at this point that whatever fog had overtaken Bokuto and Atsumu finally cleared.
“What!” They shouted simultaneously. The collective noise made Hinata’s ears ring. Hinata was starting to get fed up with their behavior. Why were they acting like they didn’t know? It’s not like Hinata had kept Kageyama a secret by any means.
“You guys are being ridiculous now.” Hinata sighed. “I can’t believe you forgot who Kageyama-kun is!” Hinata crossed his arms and shook his head. He couldn’t believe they’d forget their own teammate! Did those nights out of the Olympic Village mean nothing to them?
“Kageyama-kun!?” Atsumu and Bokuto yelled again. Hinata even noticed a look of slight surprise on Sakusa’s face.
“Yes! My husband!” Hinata shouted, matching their energy. “How could you forget a teammate? You’re making me look smart right now.” Hinata scolded.
“Sho-kun.” Atsumu puffed out, still in shock. “We know who Kageyama-kun is.” Hinata was now extra confused. If they knew who Kageyama was, then why were they weird?
“Huh? Then why are you acting all crazy?” Hinata asked, staring at Atsumu with wide eyes.
“We didn’t know you two were married.” Atsumu explained. Hinata finally noticed how silent the studio had gotten. He swears he could’ve heard a pin drop.
Finally understanding exactly what just happened, Hinata tensed. All the eyes in the studio were on him. He wasn’t necessarily afraid of public attention, but with everyone’s focus directed specifically at him, Hinata couldn’t help but shift in discomfort.
“We’ve been married for 4 years, though…”
The resulting chaos was almost too much for Hinata to handle.
“How did nobody know?” Hinata groaned. Ever since the interview was posted, Kageyama and Hinata’s phone had been buzzing nonstop.
“I don’t think we ever told anybody.” Kageyama explained.
After their morning work out, they both took turns showering, followed by Hinata promptly flopping onto their bed. Kageyama couldn’t help but think about how endearing he looked, all pouty and freshly clean.
“In my defense, nobody ever asked.” Hinata sighed.
Kageyama hummed in agreement and joined Hinata on the bed. Hinata’s head found its way into Kageyama’s lap, while Kageyama’s hand made its way into Hinata’s hair.
The soft strands Kageyama played with not only soothed himself, but Hinata as well. The big sigh he let out was enough encouragement for Kageyama to continue his movements.
“Do you care?” Hinata asked quietly. By the way Hinata hid his face in Kageyama’s leg, Kageyama could tell that this had been weighing on him for some time.
Kageyama already knew the answer to that question, but he couldn’t help the feeling of anger that bubbled up inside him. He hated the fact that this whole situation was anxiety inducing for Hinata. It was nobody's business but there's. He wished it were that simple.
Since becoming a professional athlete, Kageyama has had to learn to deal with the public side of things. All he wanted to do was play the sport he loved and kick everyone’s ass, not make press appearances and answer interview questions.
He figured though, with his life being in the public eye, it was only a matter of time before everyone found out. Kageyama would proudly tell the world over and over again who his husband was, but sometimes he wished he could keep him all to himself.
When the news came out, Kageyama had accepted that their little secret, one he had cherished as all their own, was no longer just theirs. Kageyama tried not to dwell on it.
“No.” He answered bluntly.
“Okay.” Hinata whispered.
They stayed there, Hinata resting on Kageyama’s lap, until Hinata got restless. When Hinata got up, Kageyama could tell he looked more assured. His shoulders were back and a slight smile rested on his lips.
As Kageyama stood to join him, Hinata wrapped his arms around Kageyama. The squeezing hold and buried face was all too familiar for Kageyama. It brought him back to an airport when a smaller ginger had done the exact same thing, except with more tears.
While the embrace from 7 years ago was one of love and loss, all Kageyama could feel currently was love and hope . The arms that circled his waist and the hands that gripped his back screamed: I’m here .
Kageyama wouldn’t dream of being anywhere else.
When he melted into the hold and circled his arms above Hinata’s shoulders, Kageyama felt at home. Hinata’s orange hair tickled his chin as he tucked the shorter man further into him.
As Hinata pulled back, Kageyama couldn’t help but get lost in the absolute love shining in Hinata’s eyes. His soft smile and slightly rosy cheeks made Kageyama’s heart pound. When he brushed his lips against Hinata’s forehead, he tried to savor the contact.
“I love you, Tobio.” Hinata whispered when Kageyama finally pulled back.
“I love you too, Shoyo.”
“On a scale of 1-10, how much shit do you think I’m going to get from the rest of the team next practice?” Hinata asked.
Kageyama snorted out a laugh. “10.”
Hinata’s accompanying laugh, brought a grin to Kageyama’s face. He couldn't believe how lucky he was to be with this man. No one had ever made him feel the way Hinata did.
And right now, in the comfort of their apartment, Kageyama was sure he could take on whatever their future entailed. Just as long as Hinata was beside him.
