Chapter Text
Was it selfish to say Tim should have been more comfortable with him?
"I'm not saying that your taste in games sucks but objectively Tetris is boring," Alex said matter-of-factly, crossing his arms.
"Oh, and Sonic the Hedgehog is the peak of video games." Jay retorted.
Tonight had been unproductive. Rain pattered on the windows of Brian's townhouse, with flashes of lightning adding to the dramatic flair of the uninteresting evening. They were supposed to be working on behind-the-scenes stuff, but without Seth or Sarah around, the conversations just derailed into nonsense.
"It's better than Pac-Man, let's all be honest with ourselves. The game isn't interesting, it's got no story or depth, you just play as some circle, eating circles."
"Not everything has to be some big complex story." Jay nudged Tim, getting the man's attention. He had been in his own little world, dragging cards around on Jay's laptop. "Right, Tim?" Jay asked expectantly.
"Uh, yeah, sure, whatever Jay said," Tim said, not looking up from the computer.
"See, Tim agrees!" Jay insisted, drawing a groan from Alex.
"The only games I've ever seen Tim play are Snake and Solitaire, he does not get a say in this." Alex insisted, waving a hand to gesture to Tim, who was not listening in the slightest. Jay gasped in mock offense, putting a hand over his chest.
"How dare you insult Snake. That game is a masterpiece." Jay huffed, throwing an arm over Tim's shoulders. "He has amazing taste in games." He said defensively.
"He plays old people games, those are garbage."
"You're older than solitaire!"
"Shut up, that's not the point!" Alex said, crossing his arms.
Jay and Alex bickered back and forth for quite some time, before Tim looked up from Jay's laptop and sighed. "Can both of you stop arguing you sound stupid." He said, shrugging Jay's arm off his shoulder.
"Okay, but he's just wrong, that's my point." Alex insisted.
Jay hesitated, then let his hands return to his lap, his expression faltering. It wasn't long before he did quip back at Alex, leaning back on the couch. "Maybe if you stopped being obsessed with weird games where you play as a literal animal, you would have better points." He shrugged.

Chapter Text
At first, it was an instant. At length, it was a gut-wrenching hour.
Jay knew following Tim back to the hospital was a horrible idea. He knew letting him chase after that guy was a worse idea. But, what choice did he have?
"We were this close! This close, Jay!" Tim yelled, his face screwed up in anger. "Where could he have gone?" He trudged through the underbrush of the backroads forest, low hanging branches and bramble pulling at the fabric of his clothes like hands, scratching at him like claws of some beasts trying to draw him closer. What had seemed like the forest's attempts at stopping him were futile, Tim neglecting to even glance at the bush that he had gotten his boot caught on. He pulled his foot away from it, his brow furrowed.
Jay hesitated for several seconds, looking back at the clearing.
There has to be something more than this
. The guy just...disappeared. The woods weren't possibly thick enough for him to hide in. Did he
want
to know? I mean, obviously whatever was behind this was able to have people wherever it wanted them, especially if the person was working
with
that thing.
Or if they were working against it.
Jay turned to see Tim already obscured by the trees, and his heart fell to his stomach.
What if Tim disappeared too
?
"Wait-Tim-Hold on, we need to talk about all of this!" Jay called, stepping over the holes and bramble. Narrowly avoiding getting hit by one of the branches letting go of Tim's shirt, Tim reached out a hand and grabbed Tim's forearm just below the end of his sleeve. " Tim , hold on!" He cringed when his voice broke, a fraction of that fear rearing its ugly head through the cracks.
Tim tensed, stopping in his tracks. "What do we have to talk about, Jay?" He said defensively, turning just enough to see the moment Jay pulled his hand back, letting it hang at his side yet again. "We lost him. Go home." Tim said, looking away from Jay’s hand long enough to make his point clear and look into his eyes.
I don’t want you here
. At least, it seemed that way.
“Tim--” Jay started, extending a hand towards Tim’s arm again.
“
Don’t
.”
Silence hung over the forest, a hot box of things left unsaid suffocating the both of them where they stood.
“Okay..I won’t.” Jay said quietly.
Tim's footsteps crunching through the dry leaves left Jay standing there, his hand hanging limp yet again.
