None of them had heard her come home, her coat and hat still in place and undoubtedly drawn by the quiet voices in the living room. He felt Bernie hide behind him, clutching at his sweater, and he reached a hand back to pat at her arm, removing the other from Becca’s face.

    The silence stretched for a moment, his mind racing. But when he saw Becca open her mouth, lip trembling and tears in her eyes, the words just spilled out.
