    Summary

Since Odysseus washed up on her island, Calypso has come to know his moods: seldom without sorrow, and terrible, terrible, grief. In seven years, she didn’t remember a single day devoid of tears - and after he was long gone, whenever he crossed her thoughts, the image her mind would conjure was that of a weary, tear-streaked face, begging. Always begging; to be let go, to make everything disappear, to die. All she wanted in those days was a smile, if only for a moment — but, in all that time, it happened only once — and after that, it was Calypso herself who never smiled.
