Chapter Text
Ongsa sat on the park bench, her fingers lightly fidgeting a weathered grey leash in her hands. The quiet hum of the city faded into the background as she watched her dog, a fluffy Golden Retriever named Latte, sniffing around the grass. It was one of those rare, peaceful afternoons where the warmth of the sun felt just right. She found herself lost in thought when a yank and a sharp bark snapped her back to reality.
Latte broke free and darted across the park with a sudden burst of energy, making a beeline for a Pomeranian that was quickly approaching due to a ball that was thrown in their direction. Panic flashed through Ongsa as she jumped to her feet. What if Latte wasn’t as friendly as usual today? What if—
“Oh no!” A clearly distressed voice echoed across the park as the Pomeranian’s owner hurried toward them. A soft white bow bobbed gently as she ran, doing nothing to contain the hair flying over her shoulders. “Bella, wait!”
The two dogs collided with a flurry of tails, and for a moment, both women froze, fear sparking between them. But instead of snarling or growling, the two dogs sniffed each other curiously, tails wagging, as if they’d been lifelong friends.
Ongsa let out a breath and eased her shoulders. The relief made her knees weak, but then her stomach flipped for a whole other reason. When she finally looked up, her heart nearly stopped. Standing in front of her was Sun, the Sun, the idol Ongsa had admired from afar for what felt like forever. Up close, Sun was even more radiant than in her photos, her sundress fluttering slightly in the breeze, her pretty glossed pink lips shimmering in the light. Angelic.
“I’m sorry,” Sun started, eyeing Bella wearily.
Ongsa’s words caught in her throat, her cheeks burning as she tried to process the goddess before her. She tugged anxiously at the hem of her loose flannel, her fingers toying with the fabric as if searching for some form of comfort. “N-No, it’s okay,” she managed to stammer, avoiding eye contact. “Latte, um, likes making friends.” Bella was a quarter of Latte’s size. Ongsa was the one who should have been apologizing…
Sun smiled and outstretched her hand towards Ongsa, her movements graceful, casual even. The sunlight glinted off the soft strands of her auburn hair, making her look like she was glowing. “I’m Sun. Nice to meet you!” she said, her voice like a soft melody. Ongsa could scream (in the good, heart-skip, lovestruck, overwhelmed way).
“I'm O-Ongsa, nice to meet you, too.” She tried her best to return the smile, but it was hard to fake comfort when her brain was screaming. Steeling her resolve, Ongsa settled on flashing the young woman a quick grin. Good enough! Good job. After one more beat of hesitation, she grasped Sun’s hand and gave it a small shake. Okay, now she was struggling to maintain eye contact. God, she was about to faint. Her hand is so soft!
Ongsa tried her best to slow or control her thoughts, but it was really hard with the way Sun was looking at her.
Ongsa watched Sun’s smile grow and brighten. “I’ve never seen you at this dog park before. First time?”
“… Yeah. I just moved here for work.” Ongsa looked down at Latte and Bella, who were having the time of their lives. “This was the highest rated park in the area, so…” she trailed off a moment before seeming to catch herself. “I mean! I was looking for a park for Latte, and this was the best in the area.”
Sun chuckled softly, reaching down to smooth out some distressed fur on Bella’s neck. “I get you! Yeah, this is definitely a hotspot for dog owners.”
“Mmm.”
The two lulled into a comfortable silence after that, watching their dogs play while occasionally stealing small glances at one another. The gentle rustling of leaves filled the quiet, and a light breeze sent ripples across the grass. Ongsa was still shell-shocked to be standing next to Sun, but the soft chirping of birds and the warmth of the sun made her feel a little more comfortable. Sun, on the other hand, seemed perfectly at ease, occasionally talking to Bella whenever she did something she shouldn’t.
With a small sigh, Sun took a few steps toward Bella and clicked her pink leash back onto her matching pink collar. “It’s getting late, and I have a busy day tomorrow. I should probably go,” she said, flashing Ongsa a smile that made her heart skip a beat.
Ongsa nodded, her fingers nervously picking at her flannel sleeve. “It was nice meeting you,” she said, the words feeling both too small and too big at the same time.
“Likewise!” Sun grinned, offering a wave before turning to leave. Her auburn hair caught the light one last time as she walked away, her golden silhouette gradually blending into the fading daylight.
