My Baby, Here On Earth (Showed Me What My Heart Was Worth)

Summary:

Rose miraculously survived the birth of her child. While she and the other Crystal Gems are overjoyed at this, taking care of a baby that glows and has power outbursts is hard.

Chapter 1: The Miracle

Chapter Text

- Near the Obsidian Temple, On the Beach - 

 

     A beautiful woman in a white gown sits on a beach. There is a temple of a large goddess-like woman behind her. She gazes solemnly at the flowing ocean, possibly imagining another time we will never know. Her hands are caressing her pregnant belly, she seems to be due soon. She has elegant pink hair that curled into drills, with sad doe eyes. 

 

     She let out a sigh, looking down.

 

"Oh, you will love this planet, my little baby."

 

     Suddenly, a bright white light emerges from the temple. Three figures run to the beach the woman is at. The tallest figure is a woman with a deep purple afro, and lighter purple skin, with yellow visors. The second tallest is a thin white woman with peach hair and a pearl in her forehead. The smallest woman has light purple hair with darker purple skin, sporting a light dress.

 

"ROSE!!!" Screamed the second tallest woman.

   

     The woman on the beach, now named Rose, turned around. Her hair swished with her head movement, cascading back down and framing her in a glow. Her face appeared to be confused at first before her eyes lit up in recognition. Today must be the day.

 

     Finally, the three women reach Rose and practically collapse into her. 

 

"Be careful, you can't hurt the baby!" Rose reminds them in a playful tone.

 

     The other women nod, though their tones are empty almost, seemingly awaiting a bittersweet ending for their leader. The second tallest holds Rose's face, tears already forming in her light blue eyes. The tallest holds her visors, thinking of other possibilities. The smallest holds onto Rose's curls as if they were Rose herself.

 

"Pearl, you may not be able not feel me again, but you will feel my love in my child's heart. Please love them as if they were your own." She tells the second tallest, now named Pearl.

 

"Garnet, you may not be able to hear me again, but you will hear me in my child's laughter. Please guide them to be as good as you." She tells the tallest, now named Garnet.

 

"And Amethyst," The smallest, now named Amethyst, turns to Rose. "Please let this child be as happy as long as they can, treat them like a sibling."

 

     Then Rose doubles over, groaning. Pearl rushes to put Rose in a crouching position while holding onto Rose. Garnet looks over to Amethyst before rushing to Rose as well.

 

"Go get Greg, now." She tells Amethyst urgently.

 

     Amethyst, the type to not do as she is told, obeys. She runs to find Greg in the bustling town. She spots her strumming her guitar in her van. She rushes over in no time, yelling her name over and over again. Finally, she looks up. She at first looks confused at why Amethyst is annoying her before her face turns in understanding. She puts down her guitar and runs over, putting her hair up in a low ponytail while rushing with Amethyst to see her.

 

As they get to the beach it seems the labor is over, though everyone knew near the end of her pregnancy she would not survive, or exist. But there Rose was, plain as beautiful day. She looked exhausted like a real human mother, her body slumped over. Pearl was holding onto Rose as she was before Amethyst ran over, while Garnet was near Rose's legs. Garnet was holding a glowing pink bundle, her eyes confused but hopeful.

Chapter 2: First Day At Home

Chapter Text

- Obsidian Temple, Beach City -

     Soft coos filled the air as Rose laid with her new baby, Steven. The other gems, Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst, along with her other lover, Greg sat near her. They all looked in shock at the fact both Rose and the baby were alive at the same time. They all believed (Especially Rose) that she would give up her life to let Steven live on. She would be stuck (And possibly disappear) into her gem that Steven would take.

 

     Yet here they both were.

 

"Does Lil' Rose also have a gem?" Finally came a question from Amethyst. 

 

"His name is Steven, and yes." Rose held Steven at an angle where you could clearly see a shinier, brighter, pink gem underneath the cloth swaddling him.

 

     The gem seemed to be the source that made him glow so bright in the first place. On occasion the glow would dim down enough to show his original olive skin tones and dark brunette hair. His hair curled around his face similar to Rose's. 

 

"How is he constantly glowing...?"  Came a question from Pearl.

 

"..." Rose paused before saying, "I honestly wish I knew."

 

     At those words, Stevens eyes fluttered open revealing two pairs of unique irises. His right eye was a bright magenta while his left was the usual dark brown most humans had. Greg gasped upon seeing her son's interesting eyes.

 

“He’s so beautiful…” Greg whispered in awe.

 

"H-how does he also have a gem...?" Garnet asked, looking over to see Rose's gem intact.

 

"I have no idea..." Rose replied, possibly a lie. "But I have been reading those baby books, and they all said children should be in a safe environment. The temple won't cut it, he will have to live with Greg until he is old enough."

 

"I've been taking extra jobs to see if I can rent a place, the van obviously won't cut it either..." Greg admitted.

 

"What if we built a house around the temple? Cause I want to see him, and I am not running all the way to whatever place you rent." Amethyst blurted out.

 

Pearl paused before adding. "Yes, considering the fact he is also a gem, having us take care of him too would be for the best."

 

     Rose and Greg looked to each other.

 

"Yes, that is a better idea." Rose nodded

 

"That sounds like the best option to be honest." Greg agreed.

Notes:

In this au Greg is a woman and is an actually competent mother compared to canon so you don’t have to worry about Steven not knowing what school or a hospital is.

Chapter 3: The Home

hey guys its been a while lol, ive never really been the best writer (might be pretty obvious idk) plus i get huge writers block a LOT so i tend to go through a small writing spree for a while then abandoning fics. dont worry, this is not abandoned and all of my fics are just in hiatus so do expect an update even if it will take a year or two. (o゜▽゜)o☆

Chapter Text

- Obsidian Temple, Beach City - 

     The work on the temple house was, obviously, tough. Greg attempted to help with the house, by cutting parts of the wood and renovating the inside, but it was clear that she would not be able to make an entire house. Pointing the obvious, she had no experience in constructing homes, or anything that could resemble a plausible shelter. The gems did not feel comfortable letting unknown humans making the house for Steven, so they mostly made the house themselves. By the time the house was finished, Steven was five weeks old. 

 

    Bouncing a cooing Steven in her arms, Rose looked at the new home. The small beach house was made perfectly for her human partner and their son. The house was fit perfectly around the cave in which the warp pad was, but it was hidden between the Obsidian Statue’s arms and the various flora that surrounded the cliff side the statue resided in.

 

    Rose hummed a light lullaby to Steven as she rocked him, smiling lightly at him. She knew how overjoyed the other gems and Greg were at her survival, but she couldn’t be so excited at the prospect of being there to see Steven grow up.

 

   She loved Steven, she loved him so deeply, but a part of her was terrified. Terrified not just of parenthood but of hurting him, of hurting more than she already has. That part of her that wanted so desperately to disappear, to shatter, to die. She knew, deep down, that she would only cause harm to him.

 

   She couldn’t actually shatter herself though, and she knew she couldn’t “accidentally” get herself shattered while on a mission because of who… of what… she actually was.

 

   An embrace from behind and a peck on her lips drew her away from her thoughts. Turning around, Rose saw one of her gem lovers, Garnet smiling at her. 

 

“Hey Rose,” Garnet whispered, “We should put Steven in his bassinet by now.”

 

   Rose looked down into her arms to see her baby fast asleep. His face held a calm expression, his closed eyes making him look like a babydoll. She giggled softly, then carefully lifting his body until his head was on her shoulder.

 

”Oh yes, we should get him to his bed!” She laughed softly, “And I do need to see what everyone else has done to the house!”

 

 She opened the door to a staircase on the left wall and a small kitchenette and living room on the rest of the bottom floor, as she slowly walked up the steps to the bathroom and bedrooms she noticed an oddly placed portrait.

 

   Upon further inspection, it was a painting of her? Then she remembered of when she was sure of her death and Amethyst begged her to stand still so Vidalia, Amethyst’s human friend, could paint her. She knew the intent was for her death, but it still surprised her that they decided to still place the portrait in the hallway.

 

   She sighed inwardly, thinking of if she did die, and that portrait and her tapes being the only part of her Steven could see. 

 

   Finally she made it to Steven’s designated bedroom, to the nursery filled with toys and books for his development. She walked briskly to his cradle, carefully laying him down.

 

“Goodnight Steven.”
