Chapter Text

5 years have passed and things for the Reagan family have changed so much. Both Sean and Jack are reaching the end of high school and Nicky is at college and Buck and Jamie have just celebrated their wedding anniversary.

Buck and Jamie love being parents and Danny and Linda are jealous that they get to do the whole raising a child from when they were a baby.

Danny and Linda spoke to Sean and Jack and told them that they want another child but they are looking at adoption and both boys said they can't wait to be big brothers.

Buck gave Danny and Linda Eddi McKee number and said she was the best social worker there was.

Danny and Linda met with the woman and like she did with Jamie and Buck she asked them to be completely honest with her.

Danny and Linda tell her everything and how they have two kids already and they are ready for another child but the reason they want to adopt is because they know that there are children out there who need a good home and a loving family.

Eddi was impressed by how honest they were and she is glad that they are ready now.

Eddi does say that they will have a lot to do as they are both working in very highly stressful jobs but they seem to communicate very well with each other so that's a good thing.

When the rest of the family found out what Danny and Linda were planning they were excited for them and Danny apologized to Jamie for making Buck keep it a secret but Jamie wasn't angry.

Danny comes down the stairs and he is putting on his coat as he is only at work for half the day as he and Linda have a meeting with their social worker.

“OK I've spoken to Buck and he is going to pick the boys up when he finishes his shift and he will take them both back to his and Jamie’s place” Linda says coming into the living room.

“It's going to be fine sweetheart,” Danny says, pulling his wife into a hug.

“I know but I'm just worried in case we don't get approved and we can't adopt” Linda says.

“I know me too but Buck's social worker promised to help us and look at how she helped Buck and Jamie” Danny says.

After giving his wife a kiss Danny leaves for work and he gets to the station.

Danny enters the station and he walks to his desk.

“Well look who is on time for once” Detective Maria Baez says.

Danny looks at his partner and he knows she is only joking with him.

Danny and Detective Baez have been partners for a few years now ever since Jacqueline Curatola left.

“So are you nervous about this meeting today?” Maria asks.

“No not really as we have Buck's social worker on our side and trust me she knows how to do her job” Danny says.

“Well I'm glad. Do you and Linda want another boy or a girl?” Maria asks.

“I want a girl as it would be nice to have one” Danny says.

Danny has always wanted a girl that he can spoil and protect and worry more about but he is glad that he has two sons.

“Well if you do get a girl any boy who hurts her will be very sorry when she is older enough to date” Maria says.

“Got that right” Danny says and both him and Detective Baez head out on their tour.

Both Detectives are having a slow day and Maria says if Danny or Linda need help to always let her know.

Danny appreciates it and he is glad that his wife gets on with his partners and she doesn't worry about him cheating, not that he would.

Danny and Baez are driving down 1010 Euclid Avenue when they hear gunshots.

“Gunshots” Detective Baez says and she stops the car and both her and Danny see people running past them and Baez sees a car going past them.

People are screaming and running and Danny sees someone running in the opposite direction and he knows this person is involved.

“There they are. I'm going to follow on foot” Danny says and gets out of the car.

“I'll take the back! I'll be there!” Baez says.

Danny runs a few blocks and he loses the person.

“Damn it” Danny says.

Danny is catching his breath and seeing if there are any other ways the suspect could have gotten away or is hiding when he sees a woman coming over to him and it's clear that she is bleeding.

“Hey how bad are you hurt?” Danny asks and the woman falls into his arms and Danny looks at the woman and he sees that she is in a bad way.

Detective Baez comes up behind Danny and she takes in the scene.

The woman knows she is hurt and dying but she needs to know if her daughter is alive.

(panting) “My baby” The woman says.

“It's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay” Baez says, trying to calm the woman down.

“My baby. My baby,” The woman says.

“Where's your baby?” Danny asks.

“My baby,” The woman says.

(baby crying)

“Okay, okay. Okay. I'm going to check on your baby and make sure she's fine” Danny says.

Danny gets up and he goes to where the baby is and he picks the girl up.

“Is that baby hit?” Baez asks.

Danny looks the girl over and as far as he can tell she is fine but when the paramedics come he will get them to check.

“She's okay,” Danny shouts back.

“She's okay mam,” Baez says.

The woman smiles and she closes her eyes and she can go peacefully knowing that her daughter has not been shot.

“Come on. Stay with me now. Come on” Baez says.

“5-4, detective to Central I need a 10-85 forthwith to this location we are at 1010 Euclid Avenue three shots fired. Two victims may have been hit and one of them is a baby I repeat, one of the victims is a baby” Danny says speaking on his radio.

Central tells Danny that paramedics are on their way and they are a minute away.

The paramedics arrive and Buck and Dixie step out of one ambulance and two men step out of another.

Buck looks at the scene and he sees Danny with a baby and he goes into paramedic mode.

“Ian and Jacob I want you both to take a look at the woman that Detective Baez is holding while me and Dixie check the baby over” Buck says.

Everyone nods and both men go and do what they have been told.

Buck and Dixie walk over to Danny and Buck takes the baby in his arms and takes her to the ambulance and Dixie talks to Danny and gets the information she needs.

Buck checks over the baby and he sees no wounds and no bleeding and he sees no signs of abuse so Buck is happy that the baby is physically fine.

Ian comes back to the ambulance that Buck is in and tells him that the mother is dead and Buck looks at the child and thinks who would hurt this family but thank God the child survived.

Buck tells Ian that once he and Jacob are finished with Detective Baez they are to head back to the hospital and write up their reports.

Ian nods and goes to inform his partner of what the PIC has told them.

Buck picks up the girl and he looks at her and smiles and tells her it's all going to be ok and Buck has a feeling that he will be seeing this little girl soon.

Buck heads to where Danny and Dixie are and he tells Danny she's fine and Danny thanks him and tells Buck he needs to inform social services.

Buck and Dixie leave and they head back to the hospital.

Danny looks at the baby girl in his arms and he immediately feels protective of her and all those feelings of being a dad comes rushing back.

Danny and Baez get back to the station and every cop is looking at Danny as he still has the baby in his arms and he goes into the break room and closes the door and sits on the couch and he pulls out his phone and looks through his contacts and he finds Eddi McKee number and phones her.

“Hi Danny is everything ok as I thought we weren't meeting until 12pm?” Eddi asks.

“Yeah about that I'm going to have to cancel as I have just responded to a call where a mother was shot and I currently have the baby with me but she is fine as I had paramedics look at her” Danny says.

“OK I'm going to come down to the station and we will talk more there and see where we go from there” Eddi says.

“Sounds good” Danny says and he hangs up.

20 minutes later Eddi McKee walks into the station and she goes to the break room Danny is in and she sees him holding the baby and smiling.

“I'm glad she has warmed up to you,” Eddi says.

Danny looks at his social worker and he laughs.

Eddie takes a seat at the table and she gets her laptop out and she then looks at the baby and takes in her appearance and she starts to type up what the baby looks like,what she is wearing and where Danny found her.

Eddi asks Danny if there is a name tag on her jacket and Danny looks and sees nothing so Eddi calls her a Jane Doe and hopefully they can find some family for her.

“OK I have filed a report so hopefully we hear something back but I'm not that hopeful” Eddi says.

Danny thinks and he knows he needs to speak to Linda but he asks his social worker the question anyway.

“If you don't hear anything back and can't find family how long until me and Linda can adopt her?” Danny asks.

“It normally takes a few days to hear something back but what I can do is place her with you guys as an emergency and if she has no family then we will look at you and Linda adopting her” Eddi says.

“OK” Danny says.

“Do you mind holding her while I phone Linda?” Danny asks.

“Of course not” Eddi takes the baby girl.

Danny gets his phone out again and he calls his wife and tells her what's happened and she is shocked but is glad the baby is ok and asks how old she is and Danny says a few months old and Linda says she will got to the shops and get what they need to look after her until they know if she can become part of the family and Linda hangs up.

Danny puts his phone away and he takes the baby girl and Eddi gets her stuff and she hopes that Danny and Linda can adopt the little girl as it's clear Danny has fallen in love with her.

Chapter Text

Linda walked to the store Smoochie Baby and she had gotten a trolley and already she saw things for the little girl but she knew she had to only get the basic stuff for her but Linda made a mental note to ask the manager how much the kitchen play set was just in case they became her parents.

Linda walked through the rows of products and she picked a few things that caught her eye.

Linda was just turning to go to the next aisle when she bumps into someone.

“I'm so sorry,” Linda says.

“It was my fault, honestly don't worry about it” The woman says.

Linda looks at the woman and she is about Henry's age and she is dressed very smartly.

“How old is your little one?” The woman asks.

Linda looks at the trolley and sees the women point to the onesies, the diapers and the bibs.

“Just a few months old actually,” Linda says.

“Boy or Girl?” The woman asks.

“A girl,” Linda says.

“That's nice. Is she your first or second child?” The woman asks.

“She is our third as me and my husband have 2 kids already and they are both boys” Linda says.

“Well I'm sure your little one will definitely have your husband wrapped around her finger” The woman says.

“Definitely. If you'll excuse me I still have a few more things to get” Linda says.

“Of course. Have a nice day” The Woman says.

Both Linda and the woman leave and Linda knows she should have corrected the woman but it felt nice for someone to think she had another baby and it also felt nice speaking like she did have a baby girl.

Linda finishes the shopping and she has got a lot and thankfully she used the emergency credit card.

Danny and Linda had put a credit card away just in case they got approved and we're able to take a child home.

The credit card had a $3000 limit on it and if they kept up with the payments then it was to increase.

Linda walks out of the shop and she goes to her car and after putting everything in the boot she gets into the drivers side and drives home.

30 minutes later and Linda pulls up and she sees that Buck is in the driveway.

Linda parks the car and she gets out of the car.

“Hey Buck I thought you were taking the boys to yours like we agreed?” Linda asks.

“Hey Linda I was planning on it but there's a meeting that every Paramedic In Charge needs to attend and we only got told about it today and I had already picked the boys up” Buck says.

“That's fine Buck it's something you have no control over” Linda says.

“I'm sorry I would help you guys but I need to be at this meeting” Buck says.

“Buck it's fine plus you do so much for the family so you do not feel guilty” Linda says.

It's true what Linda says to Buck as the man has done so much since he entered their life's and they sometimes take him for granted but they make sure that they don’t do it all the time and if Buck says something to them then they don't get offended.

Buck hugs Linda and waves to the boys and gets back into his car and drives away.

“Boys come and help me please” Linda says to her sons.

Both Jack and Sean do as their mother says and they help her.

“Mum, why do you have 5 packs of diapers?” Jack asks.

“Well your dad called and he responded to this call where a baby girl lost her mum and they don't know if she has any family so the social worker is letting her come home with us until they find her family” Linda says.

Both Jack and Sean are shocked and they feel for the baby as she lost her mother in a terrible way but she is going to be in a house full of love and hopefully she will become their little sister.

It took 4 more trips to empty the boot and get the bags in and both Jack and Sean were excited to meet the little girl.

“So does the little girl have a name or not?” Sean asks.

Linda,Jack and Sean are in the kitchen putting away the shopping.

“I don't think your dad said her name” Linda says and as she thinks about it she didn't hear Danny say the name.

“Well, do you think we could call her after grandma and use the name Mary Reagan for her?” Sean asks.

“I don't think we would be allowed to do that,” Linda says.

“It's just a thought since we don't know her name,” Sean says.

“It was a nice thought,” Linda says.

Just then they hear the front door opening and Danny calls out.

Linda,Sean and Jack go and greet Danny and when they do they see he is holding the baby and Linda immediately falls in love with her.

“She's beautiful, Danny,” Linda says.

“Yeah she is,” Danny says.

Both Jack and Sean look at her and she locks eyes with them and makes grabby hands and that causes everyone to laugh.

“Ok boys take a seat on the sofa and I'll hand her to one of you” Danny says.

Both boys take a seat and Danny hands the baby to Sean and she wraps her fingers around his.

Jack causes her to laugh when he tickles her and Linda and Danny love hearing all three of them laughing.

“Do we know her name?” Linda asks.

“Unfortunately not but don't worry she's going to be ok” Danny says.

Linda looks at her husband and she hopes he is right.

Both Linda and Danny join the kids on the sofa and they talk about how it may only be for a few days that she is here.

“We have to give her a name,” Sean says.

“Let me phone Eddi and see what she says” Danny says.

Danny gets up and takes his phone out of his pocket and dials Eddi's number.

“Hi Danny, what can I do for you?” Eddi asks.

“I have a question. Since we don't know the name of the baby girl we saved, are we allowed to call her by a name we choose?” Danny asks.

“It wouldn't hurt as you can't just call her Jane Doe. What name were you thinking?” Eddi asks.

“Give me one second. Boys, what name are we thinking for the most beautiful girl in your arms?” Danny asks.

“Mary Reagan” Both Sean and Jack say at the same time.

“Well my boys think Mary would be a nice name” Danny says.

“I take it Mary was your mother's name?” Eddi asks.

“Yes it was,” Danny says.

“Well I think that sounds nice,” Eddi says.

“Thank you” Danny says.

“You're welcome. I'll put a note in your file saying that for now the baby is called Mary” Eddie says.

“Thank you” Danny says.

Both Eddi and Danny both hang up and he goes over to the couch and sits down again.

“Hello Mary,” Danny says.

Linda takes Mary from Sean and she gets up and goes to the bookshelf where there are some photos of the family.

“You are going to be loved so much and we are going to make sure that no harm will come to you” Linda says and places a kiss on her head.
