Momentarily Fresh

Summary:

From all the weight she was maintaining through lifting them up, she knew that the only way this was going to end was in the death of them both; so why not give her a chance to live a little longer?

She never could've expected what she'd see down there. Really, she couldn't.

(Sort of a what if scenario where Jinx receives a chance to be with Silco for only a little longer.)

Work Text:

All it took was one swift tackle mixed within the heat of the moment, next thing she knows is that she's holding onto her sister's hand for dear life as she hopelessly tugs to bring them both up. They won't make it, they both know it. But that still doesn't halt her from trying, despite all the mechanisms of the current situation working against her. She admires that, she always has admired that aspect of her, so much that it distracts her from reality for a little. But that aspect of her also blinds her from the truth she knows deep down in her heart, a truth that Jinx has already come to terms with.

Her face softens; she's afraid of what's next, like always, but it won't stop her.

"I'm always with you, sis."

With that, she's sunken to the bottom. But not before sharing one final, tender moment with their late father, of course.

Kaboom.

When she awoke, she found herself in a most unfamiliar environment surrounding her. Waves of luminescent blue rays shone from all sides pointing to her body, with dashes of purple and pink worked in between them. Beneath her was a pitch black pool of void, which somehow remained solid enough for her to stand upon despite being made up from complete nothingness. The sight of it was mesmerizing, she could hardly avert her eyes from the vast arrays of coloring. As they seemed to be in constant motion. But then she heard a sound coming from beside her, it was footsteps. They quickly peeled her attention away from the colors as her sights landed on the figure walking towards her. As they emerged, a familiar voice and silhouette came with.

"Jinx?" the man said.

She couldn't believe what her eyes saw.

"S-Silco?" she said.

Her voice hit a light stammer upon processing his visage, quickly getting misty-eyed. He looked over the moon to see her again, but not as over it as she was when approaching him.

"I-"

Before he even managed to get a single croak of a word out, Jinx had already leapt into his arms; nearly pinning him to the non-existent ground while doing so. She sobbed into his chest; not tears of sorrow, but ones of pure joy.

"I missed you, I missed you so much..." she franticly exclaimed, voice reeked with the sound of melancholy.

He wasted no time taking her into his arms, as they warmly entangled themselves in a familiar manner over her back; his hand clutching down tightly onto the back of her shirt.

"As did I, child." he calmly stated.

His head slanted forward until his sat laxly over her shoulder. His hand instinctively brought itself upwards until it was petting the back of her head affectionately, fingers curling into her hair. The hug lasted for a good long while, before she realized they might have some catching up to do. She pulled her head back to look up at him.

"Where are we?" she questioned.

Silco took a moment to traverse his eyes through each speck of the environment encircling the both of them.

"It seems that we're going through a wormhole." he explained.

Her eyebrow raised while looking towards him, puzzled.

"You...mean like time travel?" she asked.

"I suppose, though there's no guarantee where we'll end up." he answered.

She took a moment to think on the ramifications of this, before asking another question.

"Silco?" she called.

"Yes Jinx?" he responded.

"Are we...dead?" she inquired.

Silco's eyes fluttered away as he contemplated silently to himself for an answer. Once he was ready, his eyes shifted back onto her.

"I'm afraid I'm unsure." he answered honestly.

"How can you be? Don't you remember-"

She paused briefly, breathing out some loose guilt from within her system. She saw that his face remained stoic, enough so that she finally felt comfortable enough to spit it out.

"D-Don't you remember, what I did to you?" she questioned.

He nodded.

"Yes, I do remember." he replied.

Her face turned sour from the guilt she was feeling internally.

"Then how can you be unsure?" she asked.

He allowed silence to settle in over their back and forth while staring down blankly towards her; hoping that his stare would be properly interpreted by her.

"Because you're here with me." he explained, as if it was obvious.

She scoffed.

"How is that an answer? You think I'm immortal or something?" she asked.

Silco once again nodded his head in agreement

"In a way, yes." he thoughtfully answered.

Her face softened a little, eyes glistening with a lingering wetness leftover from her earlier stream of tears.

"You really think I'm that strong?" she asked, voice lilted.

He looked towards her as if she were asking something really stupid, already half-able to tell what the answer is from his eye language alone.

"What makes you think I wouldn't?" he softly inquired.

She sniffles.

"Well, I screw things up a bunch don't I? I-I mean, I get everyone around me killed! Especially people who I care about!" she explained.

Her eyes were welling up with another barrage of tears; and Silco was quick to the touch on consoling her. He laid out his gentle palm across her cheek, taking his thumb to almost ticklish caresses over it. With his free hand, he slid his index across the underbelly of her lower eyelids, wiping away her signs of distress.

"It's okay. There is nothing for you to worry about. You're perfect, after all." he softly stated.

She pulled into him for another hug, his provided warmth nestling the tears away with great care.

"I'm sorry..." she said.

He instantly took her into his arms once more, and she could tell by the way they wrapped around her that he was more than willing to do so as many times as she needed. While locked in the embrace, Silco glanced upwards to see a shining ray of light approaching.

"Don't be...do you know why?" he questioned intentionally.

"Why?" she asked.

Suddenly, all around them was no longer a void of mixed colors and nothingness; but a forest of pure beauty. Jinx quickly pulled herself out of the embrace when noticing their new surroundings, mouth hung open in awe at the sudden transition. From behind, Silco approached her, and placed his hand atop her shoulder lovingly. She looked towards him again, expectantly.

"Because now, we have an opportunity for a fresh start." he says.

Jinx feels a tinge of confliction arise in her system.

"But what about Vi?" she asked.

Silco looked towards her, a slight glimpse of bitterness present within his stare.

"She can wait. After all, I'm certain we have much to catch up on, haven't we?" he said.

She smiled.

"Yeah, you're right about that!" she exclaimed, proceeding to giggle and snort excitedly under her breath.

It looked as if to be a fresh new start for both of them, but only momentarily. She still had "things" to attend to back home after all.
