    Summary

Emperors Caracalla and Geta have been insulted by the people of the city of Alexandria and have ordered all men in the city capable of bearing arms to be executed. To prevent this mass slaughter and preserve the relations between Alexandria and Rome, Senator Gracchus has arranged a marriage between the Emperor, Caracalla, and a patrician of Alexandria, the lady Cassia. The Emperors accept this arrangement and quell the order against the citizens of Alexandria.
Cassia is a distant descendant of Alexandria's queen Cleopatra and Rome's own Mark Antony. Her engagement to Emperor Caracalla has been arranged by her father, Tiberius, and Senator Gracchus. She understands that the gods have willed this marriage as her fate and reluctantly accepts the marriage agreement in order to save her people.
Marcus Acacius is the Roman Empire's most accomplished and celebrated general. His loyalties lie with Rome, her citizens, and her emperors. He is chosen to retrieve Caracalla's bride from Alexandria. As a man of honor, he would never do anything to betray the citizens of the Empire. But when he is sent to fetch the Emperor's betrothed, he finds that love and reason keep little company together.
