Wrapped in Love

Summary:

“Should we eat first or open gifts?” Hua Cheng asked, his heterochromatic eyes sparkling with mischief and anticipation.

Xie Lian glanced over from the stove, his cheeks flushing a delicate pink. “Gifts first. If… that’s okay with you?”

Hua Cheng smirked, crossing the room to wrap his arms around Xie Lian’s waist, pulling him close. “Anything you want, Dianxia. Who am I to refuse you?” His voice was low, teasing, but the affection in his tone was unmistakable.

Work Text:

Xie Lian stood in the craft aisle of their favorite boutique, his fingers hovering over rows of nail polish bottles arranged like a vibrant rainbow. He picked up a bottle of gleaming amber polish, tilting it toward the soft glow of the overhead lights. The color was warm, rich, and impossibly familiar—it was the exact hue of Hua Cheng’s left eye, the one that seemed to hold a quiet universe of mischief and devotion. Xie Lian’s lips curved into a soft smile, his heart tugging with affection.

Beside it, another bottle caught his attention, a bold crimson red that shimmered like a flame, perfectly capturing the fiery determination of Hua Cheng’s other eye. He held both bottles in his hands, a strange mix of shyness and satisfaction washing over him. These were perfect —a small, meaningful way to show how much he noticed and adored every detail about Hua Cheng.

“Perfect,” he murmured under his breath, slipping the bottles into his basket with care. Nestled beside them was a familiar bright box of cereal, the kind Hua Cheng always claimed was “too sweet for an adult” but still devoured with childlike enthusiasm every Saturday morning. Xie Lian chuckled to himself, imagining Hua Cheng’s sheepish grin as he poured yet another bowl.

As he wandered into the next aisle, something unexpected caught his eye—a plush fox perched on a shelf, its oversized tail fluffed to cartoonish proportions. Its sly, mischievous expression was so unmistakably Hua Cheng that Xie Lian barely hesitated before grabbing it, a surge of excitement bubbling in his chest. He could already picture the way Hua Cheng’s face would light up when he saw it, his rare, dazzling laugh filling the room.

Meanwhile, across town, Hua Cheng strode through the sleek aisles of a department store, his gaze scanning the shelves until it landed on a plush ferret. It was small, soft, and entirely unassuming, but its fur was the exact shade of Xie Lian’s honey-brown eyes—warm, gentle, and endlessly captivating. A slow smile spread across Hua Cheng’s face as he picked it up, running his thumb over its tiny paws.

“You’re the one,” he said quietly, as though the toy could hear him. He imagined Xie Lian’s surprised laugh, the way his eyes would crinkle at the edges, and felt a swell of pride at his find.

The ferret joined the growing collection in Hua Cheng’s basket: a sleek bottle of nail polish that perfectly matched the soft, stormy gray of Xie Lian’s eyes and a box of his favorite health-conscious cereal, the one Hua Cheng always teased him about for being “too virtuous.” He smirked to himself, already anticipating their playful banter.

In their separate corners of the city, both Xie Lian and Hua Cheng were preparing for the same moment, unknowingly weaving together gestures of love as vibrant and unique as the bond they shared.

That evening, their apartment, a cozy haven filled with keepsakes of their years together, seemed to radiate warmth. The soft golden glow of the overhead lights reflected off framed photos and little trinkets they’d collected on their journey as a couple. The rich aroma of Xie Lian’s cooking wafted through the air, mingling with the faint scent of Hua Cheng’s cologne as he set the table. His gaze kept drifting toward the neatly wrapped gifts stacked on the counter, his excitement barely contained.

Moments later, they settled on the plush couch, the soft hum of the city outside barely audible over their shared excitement. Xie Lian shifted nervously, biting his lip as Hua Cheng passed him the first gift.

Xie Lian carefully peeled back the wrapping, his eyes widening when the plush ferret emerged. He held it to his chest, his lips curving into a tender smile. “It’s adorable,” he murmured, stroking the soft fur.

“It’s you,” Hua Cheng teased, leaning in to press a kiss to Xie Lian’s temple. “Soft, sweet, and endlessly curious about everything.”

Blushing deeper, Xie Lian handed Hua Cheng his gift. Hua Cheng tore into the wrapping paper with unabashed enthusiasm, his laughter ringing out when he unveiled the plush fox.

“This is perfect,” he declared, holding it up to examine its sly expression. “Sneaky and sly, just like me. You’ve got me all figured out, haven’t you, gege?”

“And you’ve got me figured out too,” Xie Lian replied, his voice soft and filled with warmth.

When they unwrapped the bottles of nail polish next, the coincidence of their choices made them both dissolve into laughter.

“Of course,” Hua Cheng said, holding up the amber and crimson shades with a triumphant grin and held each beside his face.

“And you chose mine,” Xie Lian added, lifting the honey-brown bottle with a shy smile.

Their laughter eventually quieted, replaced by soft, shared smiles. Each took their plush toy, and almost instinctively, they pressed gentle kisses to their soft furry foreheads.

“Well, Xiao Fox,” Hua Cheng began, tilting the toy to face Xie Lian’s ferret, “you’re officially our child now.”

Xie Lian giggled, wrapping his arms around the ferret. “And you too, Xiao Ferret. You’re part of our little family now.”

Hua Cheng pulled Xie Lian closer. “Do you think they’ll get along? I mean, they’re both so different—like us.”

“I think they’ll be just like us,” Xie Lian said softly, his smile turning tender. “I think they’ll balance each other out.”

Hua Cheng chuckled and kissed Xie Lian’s forehead again, “You’re right. They’re going to be the perfect pair.” He gently placed the fox beside the ferret on the couch. “Our little ones.”

Xie Lian smiled, leaning in to kiss Hua Cheng’s forehead in return. “I think they’ll be even better than us.”

“Impossible,” Hua Cheng teased with a wink, leaning in for another kiss—this time on Xie Lian’s lips. The kiss was soft and lingering, and when they broke apart, he whispered, “Happy anniversary, Dianxia.”

Xie Lian’s heart swelled with affection. “Happy anniversary,” he whispered back, pressing his forehead to Hua Cheng’s as they shared another soft, intimate kiss, surrounded by the plush children, their laughter, and the quiet joy of their little family, built not just of toys, but of love.
