Summary
Everything is dark. How he knows, he isn’t certain, but he can feel it stretching on for eternity, an inky void content to swallow everything in its wake. He knows he doesn’t have a body that can technically experience physical sensation, but Jayce feels…Light. Warm. Held. He has no eyes to scan his surroundings, no ears to pick up clues that might tell him where he is, no hands to reach out and feel for anything, anyone that might be near him. But he knows he’s not alone. Something else is here, and it’s incorporeal just like he is. And yet, somehow, despite it all, it’s cradling him. If he had a mouth to sigh with, he would.
This is everything. We’ll stay like this forever, he thinks, though who “we” is he doesn’t know.
He’s not sure how much time passes like this. Time doesn’t seem to matter here, wherever here is. But it changes. The shift is slow and sudden all at once, a flash of coldness splintering through that warm, contented feeling. The loss of something. He’s alone again. If he had arms to reach out with, he would. He would thrash and scramble and grasp desperately to bring that thing, whatever it was, back to him. He doesn’t have a heart, but he feels it ache anyway.
