You’re my Light

Summary:

“How many times are you going to keep going back?!” Shadow grabbed a hold of Sonic by both arms and shook him roughly. The hedgehog before him was so broken, he couldn’t even tell the situation he was in was extremely toxic.

“She loves me! It was a-“

“Stop.” Shadow growled out, silencing Sonic completely.

“I will not allow this to continue. Amy has only treated you worse and worse as the months go on. This ends, now.”

(Or the story of how four times Shadow helped Sonic realize he was loved, and the time Sonic realized he loved Shadow.)

Notes:

Hello! This is my first time in a long time writing a fanfic, so take it easy on me as I come out of my retirement of writing. Also, I just love these two together, and I especially love a soft Shadow <3
Please let me know how you like the beginning of this!

Chapter Text

The first time Amy had struck Sonic was about two months into dating. The two had ended up dating after the whole Prism incident, when Sonic and Shadow had finally gotten their home back after fearing they had lost it. Sonic had been so overjoyed to see his friends and the ones he called his brothers. Sonic hadn’t even thought twice about his answer when Amy had asked for him to go out with her. It was a long time coming anyways, they were close, and perhaps they were a little closer than two friends should have been anyways.

In the beginning, they spent a lot of time sitting by the water under the palm trees. Sonic enjoyed it more now that he had almost lost all of this. Today was no different, the two sat on a blanket near the water, eating some dinner together. Sonic should have known something was off when Amy wouldn’t quit staring at him.

“Hey Sonic, have you ever realized you spend a lot of time running with Shadow?”

The question threw Sonic off completely. While he did spend a lot of time with his rival, he also spent the same amount or more time with Amy.

“I don’t think I spend that much time with him. I just enjoy racing against someone who is actually able to give me some competition.” Sonic said, eating some of his chili dog. Amy frowned at his response, and with a huff she began to eat her food as well. Sonic thought the conversation was over, but was surprised when she kept on going.

“I really don’t think you should see him as often anymore.” She said casually, as if she was commenting on the weather.

“What!?” Sonic spluttered.

“You heard me Sonic.”

“Haha that’s a good one Ames, but I’m still going to see-“

Amy dropped her food and struck Sonic across the face before he could even finish his sentence. He felt the blood drain from his face as the reality of what happened set in. Sonic stood up abruptly, dropping his chili dog into the sand. Sonic’s heart rate picked up and he wasn’t sure if he should run or apologize to Amy for trying to do something she wasn’t comfortable with.

“Stop being dramatic, sit down and eat your food.” Amy spat out angrily, glaring hard at the blue hedgehog.

Sonic went to take off in a run away from the confusing situation when he felt her latch onto his hand with a tight grip. He turned to look into her eyes and saw nothing but anger. Sonic couldn’t handle this right now, he needed to run and feel the wind whipping by him to clear his mind. As gentle as he could, Sonic removed Amy’s hand off his arm before taking off without looking back.

Sonic didn’t know where he was going, but he had to get far enough away from her as possible. What the hell was that all about? Had he just imagined the whole thing? Sonic had been a little off since the whole prism incident happened anyways. This wasn’t like her at all, to hurt him or anyone like this. The sun was starting to set now, and Sonic would soon have to return home to where his brother Tails was.

Sonic suddenly felt someone slam into his side, and he felt panic take over him as he thought it could possibly be Amy catching up to him. However, he saw the black and red hedgehog racing next to him with his signature smirk on.

“What are you doing, faker?” Shadow said, dragging Sonic away from his thoughts.

“Oh hey Shads! You know me, just out for a run!” Sonic said, doing his best to fake a happy voice. Shadow immediately caught on to it, looking at him skeptically. Shadow noticed his blue counterpart was lacking his usual smile.

Sonic slowly came to a stop by their usual spot where they hung out, in the lavender field. Shadow followed suit, shutting down his air shoes. Sonic didn’t turn to face Shadow, fearing the other hedgehog would see his sadness as clear as day. Shadow didn’t say anything at first, just looking at Sonic under the moonlight that was slowly becoming more prominent.

“I thought you were on a date with Amy tonight?” Shadow said, but he saw the way Sonic slightly flinched at him saying that. Something was wrong, usually Sonic was beaming about how great she was, and how happy he was with their relationship every chance he got.

“Um, I was but I think we got into a fight.” Sonic said carefully, waiting for the black hedgehog to laugh or say something cruel as he usually would. It never came though, Shadow instead sighed and came to stand next to his rival.

“Well it happens sometimes Sonic, that’s just how relationships work.” Shadow said surprisingly soft. Sonic glanced over at the other, and Shadow caught the sight of tears streaming down his face.

“No, this was different than a normal argument Shadow. I don’t know what I did wrong.” Sonic sat down, drawing his knees to his chest. Shadow wasn’t the best at these things, but he decided to sit down next to him.

“Tell me about it.” Shadow said softly, not wanting to push the other too much.

“I-I can’t, it’s not important anyways. I think Amy and I just need some time apart.”

Shadow sighed, this was so unlike the other. In a bold move, he gently grabbed Sonic’s hand, and with that move Sonic removed his head from his knees and stared at Shadow shocked. Shadow caught sight of the mark on Sonic’s face, and could see the little claw marks that had made an impact on the other’s cheek. Everything started to make sense really quickly, had Amy struck Sonic? Shadow felt his anger curl in his stomach, how could she ever do something like that?!

“Sonic, did Amy hit you?!” Shadow growled out, trying to keep his voice calm and steady. Sonic didn’t have to answer him, because as the words hung in the air, more tears streamed down Sonic’s face.

“I don’t know what I did Shadow! I don’t know how to fix it!” Sonic cried, pulling his hand back again to sob into his arms. Shadow grabbed the other’s face in his hands, wiping away the tears that kept spilling. How could someone do this to Sonic? The hedgehog was so full of life and love. Sonic would do anything for anyone, and the fact that someone had the audacity to hurt him made Shadow want to hunt Amy down.

“You did nothing wrong Sonic, I want to kill her.” Shadow whispered, trying to hold himself together.

“No, please Shadow. Just stay with me tonight.” Sonic all but begged his rival, staring into those bright fiery eyes. Shadow laid them both back into the soft lavender, staring up at the stars.
Sonic moved closer to Shadow, laying his head between the crook of his neck and shoulder. Sonic silently cried and Shadow let him, there was nothing he could do to help unless Sonic let him take care of that girl.

“Stay with me tonight, and we will try to figure this out.” Shadow said, rubbing circles on the other’s back gently. Sonic nodded, not lifting his head up. Shadow knew they had been spending a lot of time together recently, and he couldn’t help but notice how natural it felt to hold Sonic close like this. The circumstances weren’t the best, but he almost let himself purr to help soothe the other hedgehog.

Sonic deserved so much more than what Amy was giving him anyways. Shadow had never been a fan of her, she was always over the top or annoying to be around. The day Sonic had announced the two of them were going to be dating, he couldn’t help but feel jealous. Anyone who got to be with Sonic was lucky, and he couldn’t help but want Sonic for himself since they had pieced back their world. The two of them hadn’t been that close before the prism incident, but over these last few months their bond had grown, and Shadow had come to see Sonic in a different light.

Sonic’s snores interrupted any more thoughts Shadow could have. He felt peace settle in his chest as he held the other close, and he fell asleep under the stars, holding Sonic as tightly as he could.
