Bound by Fate + Wounds we Hide + Never-ending Eclipse

Summary:

As you can see, I don't actually have a story name for this one. Suggestions are always welcome ^^

---
The escape pod they had taken shelter in was a small, dark space, but it offered the only protection they had from the elements outside. Sonic had avoided Shadow’s gaze as much as possible, wanting to give the black hedgehog space to recover, but it wasn’t easy. Every time Sonic moved, the wound on his side throbbed, growing hotter with each passing hour.

At night, when Shadow was resting, Sonic had taken to tending to his injuries in secret, cleaning the cut with what little supplies they had. But he had noticed something strange. The wound—once shallow and manageable—was growing redder, puffing up in an unnatural way. He had hoped it would just go away, that it was a minor issue, but the burning ache in his side was growing unbearable.

He hadn’t told Shadow. He couldn’t. There was no way Shadow would understand, not when they were so close to escaping this place. He couldn’t risk dragging them both down.

Chapter 1: Bound by Fate

Chapter Text

The world had always seemed to move fast for Sonic–the rush of wind, the thrill of speed, the pulse of adventure. But in that moment, as the GUN airship was ripping apart around them, everything felt painfully slow.

The fight had been grueling, more desperate than anything they’d faced before. Sonic had barely managed to outrun the blasts from GUN’s forces, while Shadow unleashed the full fury of his Chaos powers. They had one goal: escape. The countdown to the ship’s self-destruction was already ticking down, and time was running out.

"Chaos Control!" Shadow roared, slamming his hand to the ground. A burst of energy surged around them, and in an instant, they both teleported to the control room. But before they could take another breath, the new GUN Commander’s voice echoed through the speakers, smug and cold.

"You think you can escape?" The commander’s laughter followed. "The ship is already set to self-destruct. You’re both doomed."

Sonic’s heart raced. "We don’t have time for this!" he snapped, already darting toward the control panel to disable the countdown.

Shadow remained silent but prepared to act, his eyes locked on the ship’s walls, his power gathering again. But the ship was shaking, groaning under the pressure of the impending destruction. Sonic’s hands flew over the control panel, working in a panic to stop the countdown.

"Come on, come on!" he muttered.

But it was too late. As Sonic hit the final button, the ship lurched violently, throwing both hedgehogs off their feet. The entire airship seemed to come alive with an explosion of noise–the hull buckled, alarms blared, and the walls cracked under the force of the explosion.

Sonic scrambled to his feet, adrenaline pumping through his veins. "Shadow!" he called, eyes scanning the chaos. The room was starting to collapse around them.

But there was no response.

Sonic’s breath hitched. He spun around, his eyes locking onto Shadow, who was lying motionless against the far wall. A blast of shrapnel had pierced through the metal of the ship, striking Shadow’s side with brutal force. Blood stained his fur, and his breathing was shallow, labored.

"Shadow!" Sonic’s voice cracked as he dashed over to him, his own injuries forgotten in the rush of panic. His heart pounded as he knelt beside him, the urgency of the situation sinking in.

Shadow’s scarlet eyes flickered open, but he didn’t move. His face was pale, and his breath came in ragged gasps.

"It’s… too late," Shadow muttered, his voice strained. "You… should go."

"No," Sonic hissed, shaking his head, desperately trying to hold back his panic. "I’m not leaving you. We get out of here, together. You hear me? Together."

"Foolish…" Shadow’s lips barely moved, his eyes closing again as his body shuddered in pain. The ship was shaking harder now, the explosion imminent.

Sonic’s hands trembled as he tried to lift Shadow, his mind racing for an escape plan. But time was running out. They both knew it.

Sonic could feel the weight of the situation bearing down on him. He couldn’t do this alone. Shadow had always been the one to keep his distance, to keep the cold mask on. But in that moment, when their lives were on the line, everything was different. They were forced to face the truth–they were both fighting for the same thing, for survival.

"Hold on," Sonic whispered, more to himself than to Shadow, as he tried to lift him.

But Shadow groaned in pain, his body unwilling to cooperate.

"You… don’t need to do this," Shadow said weakly, a faint smirk forming despite his condition. "It’s too late for me, Sonic. It always has been."

"Don’t say that!" Sonic’s voice cracked, his frustration and fear bubbling over. "We can still make it out of here! You can’t give up now, not when we’re this close!"

With one final burst of determination, Sonic pulled Shadow into his arms, just like Shadow did for him when he was fading all those months ago, his speed allowing him to move them both toward the exit. The ship’s walls buckled, and explosions rocked the floor beneath them, but Sonic refused to stop. He would get Shadow out of here, no matter the cost.

The hallway was chaos–flickering lights, collapsing walls, and the deafening sound of the ship’s self-destruction countdown. Sonic’s breath came in quick, jagged bursts as he pushed forward, dragging Shadow with him. But Shadow’s weight was becoming heavier, and his breathing was growing shallower. The blood loss was too much.

"Almost there…" Sonic gritted his teeth. "Just a little further!"

Just as they reached the ship’s hatch, the entire airship seemed to lurch one final time, throwing Sonic and Shadow both to the floor. The hatch burst open, revealing the violent winds outside as the ship’s explosion was only moments away.

Sonic managed to push himself up, barely able to keep his balance. He reached for the escape pod, pulling Shadow toward it with all the strength he had left.

But Shadow’s eyes flickered, his hand weakly gripping Sonic’s arm. "Sonic… you need to go."

"No," Sonic said fiercely. "Not without you!"

The airship groaned; the final explosion imminent. Sonic’s heart raced, knowing that their time had run out. Shadow’s bloodied face was pale, his body unresponsive, and his grip was growing weaker. But he still held on to Sonic’s arm.

"I won’t make it," Shadow whispered, the words a sharp pain in Sonic’s chest. "But you can. You can save yourself."

Sonic shook his head, unwilling to accept it. But as the countdown reached its final seconds, Sonic knew they didn’t have much time. With one last, desperate cry, Sonic pushed Shadow into the escape pod, before slamming the button to activate it.

The pod shot into the sky just as the airship exploded behind them. The shockwave sent the pod spinning wildly, but Sonic held onto Shadow, trying to protect him with every ounce of strength he had left. The blast was deafening, and everything went dark.
