It all began innocently enough, or so I thought. I had always trusted Fukuchi—his power, his unwavering charisma, his ability to command attention with nothing more than a few carefully chosen words. There was no one in the Hunting Dogs who didn’t revere him. But as I watched him more closely, something started to shift. A tiny crack in the perfect façade of the man I had sworn loyalty to began to form. It wasn't the big things, not at first. It was the small, imperceptible moments that I couldn’t quite ignore anymore.
It started when I saw him speaking with someone in the shadows of the courtyard, his tone soft and casual, but there was an underlying tension in his voice—something I had never heard before. I was far enough to not be noticed, but close enough to catch snippets of the conversation. My stomach churned at the words that reached my ears. They were business-like, but the words betrayal and secrecy lingered in the air, like a bad omen. I couldn’t ignore it, not when it gnawed at my mind for days.
The whispers continued, growing louder. I began to notice things that didn’t add up: Fukuchi’s secret meetings in dark corners, his long absences that no one dared question. More disturbingly, I saw how he avoided the eyes of his trusted allies when they asked about his activities. What was he hiding?
I didn’t want to believe it, but everything began to point in one direction. My suspicions turned into a hunger for the truth, one I couldn’t silence. I knew it was dangerous, but that didn’t matter. I had to know. I followed him one evening, a shadow among shadows, moving with quiet precision as I tailed him through the winding streets. My heart raced with every step, but I pushed the fear aside. The night was my ally.
Eventually, I saw it—the truth I had been chasing for so long. Fukuchi had been meeting with members of the rival factions, their whispered words betraying a truth I never could have imagined. They were plotting something—something so far-reaching, so dangerous, that it made my blood run cold. The sense of betrayal that filled my chest was unlike anything I had ever felt before. How could he do this? How could he betray the very organisation that had given him everything?
It wasn’t just about business deals, though that would have been enough to drive anyone’s loyalties into question. No, it was the other part that tore through my heart—the one I hadn’t expected. He had been seeing someone in secret, a figure shrouded in mystery, someone from the outside world. A lover. His infidelity, his dishonesty—it cut me deeper than anything else. He had promised me loyalty, had promised me everything, but in secret, he had been lying to me, to us all. It felt like the earth beneath me had shifted, leaving me standing on unstable ground. Everything I had known was now a lie.
I spent sleepless nights contemplating what I had learned, torn between my duty and the truth that threatened to tear my world apart. But the more I thought about it, the clearer it became. There was only one way to preserve the integrity of the Port Mafia and everything we had fought for. And it wasn’t by standing by Fukuchi’s side.
Then, the unimaginable happened. Fukuzawa—his former beloved fread, the very heart of the Armed Detective Agency—was about to die. The betrayal that had consumed Fukuchi reached its apex. He stood over Fukuzawa, his sword drawn, ready to strike the final blow. The room was heavy with tension, the silence thick as night, and I could hear my heart pounding in my ears.
I could see it all clearly now, the life draining from Fukuzawa’s eyes, his body slumping under the weight of his injuries. But in that moment, something inside me snapped. This wasn’t just a betrayal of a man who had led us all. It was a betrayal of everything we stood for. I couldn’t stand by and let it happen. I wouldn’t.
I moved without thinking, a blur of motion as I dashed toward Fukuchi. He didn’t hear me, didn’t see me coming. His attention was entirely focused on Fukuzawa, on the man he planned to destroy. But I was done with being silent, done with standing in the shadows while the man I once trusted tore everything apart.
With a single motion, I drew my blade. I didn’t hesitate. My sword was an extension of my fury, my grief, and my loss. I thrust it through the air, aiming straight for Fukuchi’s heart. The blade sank in with a sickening sound, the warmth of his blood staining my hands as I felt the life drain from him. It was a clean strike, a quick strike, but it was far from merciful. I had no time for mercy anymore, not after what he had done, not after the lies he had spun so effortlessly. This was my answer to his betrayal.
His body jerked violently, but he couldn’t fight it. Not anymore. Fukuchi crumpled to the ground, his face frozen in shock and disbelief. For the first time, I saw the vulnerability in his eyes, but it was too late. He had given me no choice. The power he once held, the power he had abused, was now his undoing.
I stood over his lifeless form, breathing heavily, my mind still reeling from what had just happened. My hands trembled, covered in his blood, but there was no regret. None at all. This was justice. This was the price of betrayal.
Turning to Fukuzawa, I rushed to his side, my heart in my throat. The sight of him, weakened and on the verge of death, only fueled the fire that burned within me. I was not about to let him die—not after everything he had done for us. I supported him, cradled him as I helped him to his feet, and whispered reassurances that we would make it through this, that the darkness Fukuchi had brought would no longer touch us.
And then, as I looked down at Fukuchi’s corpse, the weight of everything hit me. I gave them everything, I thought bitterly. Everything they could have ever wanted from me—money, jewels, clothes, and even my own heart. And yet it was never enough. So, I gave them something else.
I had given him my sword, straight through his lying heart.
It had been a long time coming, but it was done now. There was no going back. The path I had walked with Fukuchi was over, and a new chapter was beginning. One where loyalty, justice, and truth would be my guide. No longer would I be blinded by the lies he had woven around me. I had taken everything back, and it had been worth it.
