So I’ve gotten into reading the comics lately, and I finished Waid’s run of Fantastic Four! It was really good, though I had to branch off to read the Avengers Disassembled event (which included Peter turning into a spider lol) since there were a few issues tied in to that event. Did I need to read it to understand what was happening in those issues? Nope :)

bodyheat ⇄ Itsy-Bitsy
Johnny taps his foot, eyes pinned to Reed’s custom-made interstellar messaging app burned into his phone screen. The ship shakes from the sudden onslaught of atmospheric pressure. The protocol is to stay strapped in their seats with no distractions in case of an emergency, but the others don’t reprimand him for keeping his phone out.
The sky darkens beyond the window while the distant sun falls beyond the planet; the view is obscured by a swirl of flames and clouds. What will New York City look like? Will it still stand? It has to be. MJ said it was healing. But what if something happened? What if Peter—?
“Hey, kid,” Ben grouses from Johnny’s right. “You’re smokin’.”
Johnny is ripped straight from his spiral, and his own emanating acrid smoke wrinkles his nose. He quells his powers, embarrassed. “Fuck, sorry.”
Sue grabs his hand gently. “We’re almost there, Johnny.”
“Yeah. I know.” He meets his sister with a smile that he knows is cardboard, but what else can he do right now?
“We’ve pierced the troposphere. Slowing ascent.” Reed calls out from the cockpit. He rights the angle of attack and the clouds break. New York City is still standing, but its buildings are wrapped in the smoke of spitfires dotting the streets.
The four freeze at the sight. It’s one thing to hear that the city they live in was in jeopardy, but it was something completely different to see the carnage firsthand. As dread fills the air, there’s only one thing Johnny can say.
“I need to be there.”
He knows there’s protocols to follow. They need to find a safe place to land and make sure they didn't ferry any contagious space bacteria, and all the other basic procedures Reed drills into him every time they leave on a mission. It makes Johnny want to scream, because all of that means nothing to him right now. Not when his best friend is out there.
Instead of reprimanding him for ripping his buckles apart, the others look at each other. A silent conversation passes between their worried eyes. Then, Sue looks at him with a steady gaze. “Go.”
The word rings out in the cockpit. Johnny looks at his team with wide eyes, but before he can even think to thank them, he flings himself through the doors that pressure seal at his back. Once he reaches the airlock, he slams his fist on the button—an onslaught of the equalizing pressure nearly sucks him into the open sky. He doesn’t even wait for the hatch to fully open before he flames on and blasts towards the city.
The fiery hero races through skyscraper valley on the hunt for any signs of Spider-Man. The few petty crimes he found were easily dealt with. Word must have gone out that the Human Torch was back, because after half an hour of searching, his phone vibrates. A single message appears.
Johnny’s been to the F.E.A.S.T. center before on occasions that he was roped into volunteering with Peter. Aunt May always welcomed the help from “Peter’s superhero friend.” It was kinda nice to help the less fortunate (and May always gave him food afterwards, which is a definite plus.)
The F.E.A.S.T. he sees now is a shadow of its former self. It’s less of a homeless shelter and more a makeshift hospital. Countless sick people line the beds, each looking more worse for wear than the next in line, and the lines are stretched down the halls, through the lobby doors, and down the block—it’s clear what state their staff is in
Johnny’s eyes scan the lobby to find Mary-Jane Watson standing at the far side. The dried tears staining salt into her cheeks are the first thing he notices when he storms over.
She offers Johnny a strained, “Hey there, hotshot. How was the trip?”
“Oh, you know. Space is great, but there’s no place like home.”
Their laughter lasts just long enough to pretend the present was something else before it trails off into silence. Before it becomes suffocating, Mary Jane answers the unasked question. “He’s upstairs, next to the office.”
Before Johnny can rush off with a quick thanks, she grabs his arm. “Be careful. Something bad happened, and…” Her voice chokes. “He’s not doing good.”
He covers her hand with his enough to ease her and let it drop after one last squeeze. “I will.”
Johnny rushes through the kitchen and up the stairs, wondering what could be so bad that MJ has to warn him. He braces himself as he turns the corner.
Peter is curled up outside the office, knees to his chest. He’s in his suit, sans the mask, which looks roughed up. His head is bent down. He almost looks like he’s sleeping, if not for the slight shake of his shoulders, but his head shoots up at Johnny’s slowing footsteps. His eyes are wet. The two boys stare at each other after being apart for so many months.
Finally, Johnny gives a small grin. “Hey, Pete.”
“Johnny…” Peter laughs in disbelief. His smile is only a ghost that fades as fast as the tears return. His body trembles with full-force sobs.
Johnny rushes to his friend’s side in an instant. Before he could ask, Peter chokes out a few words. “She…Aunt May…I couldn’t—”
The dots connect. He remembers what Peter said before about her and the serum that Dr. Octavius stole. A familiar cold washes over his body as he watches his best friend break down, and Johnny does the only thing he can think of in the heat of the moment: hug him harder than he's ever hugged anyone.
“Shh, I’m here.” Johnny says, pulling Peter into his arms. “I’m here for you.”
They sit in the hall together, Peter in Johnny's comforting clutches and ruining his suit as he bawls into Johnny’s chest. But under the dim, flickering lights, Johnny knew there was no place he would rather be.
Notes:
The boys are reunited (not the best circumstances, but it'll get better).
I'm so happy we're at this point. One chapter left before my first multi-chapter work is completely posted. See you all for the final chapter :3.

Chapter Text
A lot happens in the weeks following the Fantastic Four’s return. Their time is stretched thin between helping Dr. Michaels with the cure for Devil’s Breath and rounding up the rioting prisoners still unaccounted for. A weight was lifted when Dr. Octavius was captured, but the damage was already done, and the harrowing fallout was a shock to come back to. And then there’s the funeral. The last time Johnny attended one was his father’s. He remembers standing next to his sister and pretending like he wasn't a second away from breaking down while the casket was lowered by crane.
He wonders if Peter hides the same thing behind his tired eyes while they bury his aunt. It takes everything inside Johnny to not pull him into his arms and make a scene, promising then that he's allowed to crack, to break, to scatter his pieces—Johnny’s back to help pick them up. Peter doesn't cry a single time since losing Aunt May. Despite the grief, he dons the Spider-Man suit every day and swings into battle with the remaining criminals in the street. He’s more focused, barely quippy. When he isn’t Spider-Man, he usually stays with MJ or at the Baxter Building with Johnny.
It relieves Johnny to know his friend isn't alone. And, during the times they spend together, Johnny does his damned best to be a distraction; movie nights, patrols, cracking stupid jokes. All to make him smile again. When he finally makes Peter laugh with a terrible Ben Grimm impression (after a week of trying), he knows things will be okay.
Which leads into this moment. It started when Johnny asked to come by Peter’s apartment to hang out for a change, and the bombshell blew him back a hundred paces. “What do you mean you don’t have an apartment?” Johnny asked incredulously.
His best friend stands across from him, sheepish. “I kinda got evicted? But it’s okay. I’ve got all of my stuff.”
“Oh, right. Your stuff. Because that’s what’s important.” Johnny scoffs and rubs his forehead in circles with his palm. “When did you get evicted Pete?”
There was a brief moment of silence. “When you were in space.”
“And you didn’t think to tell me?” Peter throws his hands up, desperately avoiding the angry sparks surging from Johnny’s shoulders. “Well sorry, Johnny, I had bigger things to deal with! Demon gang, prisoners escaping, a virus outbreak. Any of those ring a bell?”
Johnny groans, falling onto the couch. “That was a month ago, Pete! Is this why you’ve been crashing with me and MJ?”
Peter lets out a defeated sigh. He sits next to Johnny. “Kind of? I…I technically have a place. But…it was Aunt May’s. She left it for me. Well, she left everything to me. And, well,” he shrugged helplessly, “it hurts.”
Johnny placed a hand on Peter’s back and started massaging a circle between his shoulder blades. “Do you wanna sell it?”
“I-I don’t think so. It’s just…the thought of being there alone.”
Peter is trembling. His eyes are downcast, and it looks so unnatural that he can't be happy. Johnny wants to make him happy. Which is why he speaks without thinking. “I could live with you.”
The air seems to ring with his words. Both men stare at each other with wide eyes. Finally, Peter chokes out, “Wh-What? Are you serious?”
He looks shocked. Johnny understands the feeling. He’s surprised that he even said those words. A part of him wants to play it off as a joke, to avoid the sting of rejection. But that wouldn’t be fair to either of them.
“Yeah. I am.” He says, looking away. “You won’t be alone, and I can help cover bills with my rich kid money while you look for another job.”
“But what about your family?”
Johnny shrugs. “After being in space with them for months, I think I need a little break. I’ve done it before, rented a place to myself for a couple months before. As long as I let them know, it’s cool.”
Peter rolled his eyes, muttering something about rich people. But, it did look like he was considering it. Johnny smiled. “Come on, it could be fun. You can kick me out anytime.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Peter laughs, taking Johnny’s breath away. God, why does it always stun him how beautiful his friend could be? It’s embarrassing.
“Okay. I think I need some more time, and then I’ll need to go through everything.” Peter’s eyes shine as he looks at Johnny. “But after all that? We can move in together.”
“Hell yeah!” He throws his arm around Peter. “It’ll be the start of a new era! Spidey and Human Torch against the world!”
“We’re not fighting off a Kree invasion dude!” Peter pushes against him. They both laugh together, feeling lighter than they have in months. For once, things seem to be looking up.
“So, was all that front-page worthy stuff?” Johnny asks with a smirk. He sits across from MJ in a cafe; she finally cashed in on her exclusive interview, and it was a surprisingly good time. Most reporters ask him vapid questions about fashion and dating life and workout routines, all that normal celebrity bull. But MJ came out swinging about space travel and what he does as a hero fighting intergalactic threats. It’s damn refreshing to finally get some respect from the press for being the hottest member of the Fantastic Four.
Her well has already run dry and she packs her things while he leaves a tip on the table. “If you were Iron Man, maybe.”
They pass by a few buildings still under reconstruction on their route to the subway station. Three months have passed since Dr. Octavius’s madness boiled over and Spider-Man heroically put an end to his crimes. The city is almost back to the way it was before. It was still a little jarring to him to leave a city behind for a few months and come back to a burning hellscape.
“You and Pete are moving in next week, right?” MJ asks. “Have you packed yet?”
Johnny lets out a sheepish laugh. “Not exactly. Sue will probably kick my ass into gear soon enough. It’ll be a pain in the ass to fit my entire closet in suitcases.”
“Oh, you poor little rich boy.” The redhead rolls her eyes good naturedly.
There’s a lull in conversation as they walk together. It’s nice, Johnny thought. MJ is easy to hang out with, easy to talk to. He could see why Peter fell for her. Err, is still falling for her, despite whatever is happening between them.
“It’s nice,” MJ’s voice chimes out, breaking the silence. “I’m glad Peter won’t be alone after everything.”
“It’s no big deal. Besides, I’m just warming up the place for you anyway.”
Whoops. That wasn’t supposed to slip out. He sees Mary Jane stop in her tracks even as he plays off a shrug. The subway tunnel is right in front of them. “What are you talking about, Johnny?”
And, man, does he want to laugh it off, say he was just making a bad joke. Good ol’ Johnny Storm, being an airhead like always!. But she’s looking at him with eyes that say ‘cut the bullshit.’ And, well, they’re very convincing.
“I mean…it’s you guys. I’ve seen how you were, and the way Peter looks when he talks about you. You guys are made for each other.” Johnny pulls his lips in a tight line, too tight. “So, when you guys decide to move in together again, I’ll be cool. I can even move out if you need space. No big.”
MJ looks at him and he knows she sees past his nonchalant facade, probably that journalistic instinct of hers or something. He wants to beg her to stop looking deeper no matter how embarrassing it would be.. “Johnny,” she finally says, “I think you have the wrong idea.
“I love Peter, and I’m glad we’re friends again. But we want different things.” She resigns herself, not quite beaming but not sad either.. “And that’s okay.”
“What—” Johnny chokes out.
Before he can utter another word, she silences him with a hand on his shoulder. “Besides, I think he has feelings for someone else.”
Someone else? Someone that Johnny doesn’t know? “Who?”
“You should ask him what his phone’s passcode is.” With those final words, she waves goodbye and tracks down the stairwell into the station. Johnny stands there more, confused than ever.
“Hmmm… a little to the left?” Johnny says. Across the room, Peter groans before picking up the couch and moving it again. Once it’s placed down, Johnny squints. “Hmmm…a little to the—”
“Johnny, I’m this close to throwing the couch at you.” Peter flops himself down onto it, declaring its final location. “We’ve been doing this for fifteen minutes. ”
“Well, excuse me for not wanting our living room to be a mess.” But after framing the room with his index fingers and thumbs in the shape of a photograph, he relents and swings his gaze around. Packed boxes still litter the space, begging not to be left untouched for the next few months. Admittedly, most of it was his stuff. Peter didn’t even have silverware. Maniac.
Johnny rolls his shoulders, acting as though he did the lifting. “Whelp, I’m starving. Gonna get us some lunch.”
“You’re trying to just slink your way out of moving more furniture,” Peter says.
“So you’re saying you don’t want a pizza from Eddie’s?”
There’s a moment of silence. “Pepperoni. And no pineapple should ever come within twenty feet of that pizza. Got it, flamebrain?”
“Yeah, yeah.” Peter doesn’t know good taste even if it bites him. Johnny goes to the kitchen to look for his phone.
“Oh!” Peter calls out. “Make it two pizzas! Miles offered to help out, so he’s coming by.”
Johnny had heard about Miles from Peter, some tagalong that had gotten tangled up in this whole mess. This will be his first time meeting the kid. “Maybe I can give him an autograph. Make a good first impression.”
“The only impression you’d make is being a jackass.”
Johnny cackles at the retort. After a couple minutes of searching for his phone, he lets out a huff. “Damn it. Better not have forgotten it at the Baxter Building.”
“Just use mine.” Peter’s voice rings out. “Should be on the counter.”
“Thanks. What’s the passcode?”
“071711”
Johnny swipes the phone and walks back to the living room, counting them off in his head as he punches them in. “Zero, seven, one… seven…” Wait. MJ’s voice rings in his mind. He almost forgot about it in the whirlwind craziness of moving in, but with each digit, he registers how familiar it is. “Your passcode is the day we met?”
Peter’s face sports a slight blush. He looks away sheepishly. “Well, like I said. That day was important to me.”
“Oh. C-Cool.” Johnny winces at his own stutter. Fuck, he can’t think about that now. He busies himself with an annoyingly pineapple-less pizza order. Once the joint confirms over the phone Johnny grabs his keys. “I’ll be back in thirty.” He doesn’t hear his friend’s response before slamming the door behind him. He power walks down the pavement to the safety of his car, one thought ringing in his mind.
What does that mean?
