Work Text:
There was truly no better sensation than the smell of breakfast lingering in the air, and the sound of food crackling and sizzling on pans and in ovens. The source of that sensation in Red Fountain was always Edward Hekyll. Every morning, he woke up at 6:30 am sharp, like clockwork. He’d shower, brush his teeth, and change into his uniform, then make breakfast for himself and his friends.
All of this is to say; Edward was an early bird, almost irritatingly so. Some are grateful for this fact because of the delicious breakfast he prepares in that time, like Timmy and Sky. Then there are others who found it annoying how chipper he was at 7 am, like Brandon. Riven did fall into the latter group, but for a different reason.
On the outside, Riven was as prickly as a wild cactus. He’d jerk away if you touched him, and he adamantly refused any showing of affection. At least in public. Behind closed doors however, he clung to his angel boyfriend like there was no tomorrow. He was always making physical contact with Edward in some form or fashion. Especially when it was time for bed. Riven liked warm temperatures when he slept, so naturally he liked to cuddle, as the big spoon of course; He wouldn’t have it any other way.
So you can probably imagine what would happen when Riven woke up and Edward’s side of the bed was empty and cold, with a few fallen feathers being the only thing remaining of his presence. In his tired stupor, his first instinct would be to find him. This morning was no different.
Sunlight shone in Riven’s eyes, rousing him awake much to his annoyance. He sat up in his bed, the sheets sliding down and collecting on his legs. His head turned to the right of him, where Edward slept. Just as always, it was vacant. Riven shivered, finally feeling the slight chill of the room.
“Ed…”
Groggily, Riven dragged himself out of bed, slogging his way out of the bedroom and into the kitchen where could hear and smell breakfast being made. Edward’s ear twitched as he heard the familiar dragging of feet on the floor.
“Morning, Riven!”
Riven responded by wrapping his arms around Edward’s waist, minding his wings that emanated with warmth, and resting his head on his shoulder. No words emerged from his mouth, only incomprehensible mutters.
“Huh? What was that?” Edward asked, flipping a slice of bacon over with his spatula.
“So early… It’s Saturday,” Riven grumbled.
“Yep! So, do you want more bacon or more sausage this morning?”
“It’s not fair,” Riven’s hold on his boyfriend tightened. “You always leave me and let the room get cold…”
“You know, I can always look into getting a heater for you…”
“No. Too expensive. I want you.”
“Riven, you know I need to— Riven, what are you doing? Riven wait, the stove is still on! The eggs are gonna burn! RIVEN!”
But no matter how much Edward struggled, Riven didn’t let up. Even in his half-asleep state, he was stronger than him. Edward just had to watch helplessly as the frying pan was left on the hot stove and he was dragged back to the bedroom.
Riven didn’t even bother to shut the door before dragging Edward down into the bed. He pulled the blankets over both of their forms as he continued to restrain his boyfriend by spooning him and wrapping his legs around him. Edward kept squirming, but to no avail; his skinny limbs held little power here.
To placate him, Riven pressed his lips to any bare skin he could find, his cheek, his jaw, and his neck. Just as he’d hoped, Edward stopped fidgeting when he felt himself being peppered with kisses.
“Riven, please… ” he whimpered, his face cherry red.
“I don’t wanna hear it,” Riven sleepily huffed in between kisses. “You signed up for this when you let me date you. I want you here in bed with me, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
Edward was about to protest, but was interrupted by Riven’s clever yet clumsy fingers running through the soft white feathers of his wings. Any words that were going to be conjured up were cut off by his own dove coos.
A smile curved on Riven’s face as he allowed his sleepiness to wash over him.
The cushiony blankets over his body, as well as the comforting warmth of Riven’s body against his, gave Edward the same feeling of drowsiness, which made his eyelids feel heavier until they drooped shut.
“ Oh, I’m sure it’ll be fine… I can sleep for a little while… Right? ”
