Chapter 1: Prologue
Chapter Text
It’s close to midnight when Eula finds them—a lone group of Electro Abyss Mages lurking on the outskirts of the city, not particularly provoking anything or anyone but unlucky enough to catch her on a rough day. Not that today has been any worse than usual in the past few weeks, what with the cleanup efforts from the recent fight against the invading Abyssal creatures Albedo had warned of spreading the Ordo incredibly thin. Eula is fairly certain Kaeya and Albedo have both been working overtime, and she doesn’t have the slightest inkling of an idea as to when the Acting Grand Master last slept. All in all, the Knights of Favonius are presently a mess, everyone is stressed and overworked to Celestia and back, and these Abyss Mages happen to be today’s target of Eula’s ire.
She draws her claymore, then begins a series of intricate, patterned attacks which, to the untrained eye, might appear almost as a dance. While she does wield a Cryo Vision, she much prefers to rely on her own physical strength to do the job—Eula has never required assistance from the gods to be a formidable opponent. With a well-placed combination of brute strength and a single applied Cryo strike, Eula is able to break the first mage’s shield. Now the real fun begins. Eula wipes the sweat from her brow and levels her claymore, prepared to deal the finishing blow.
And yet, she never gets the chance, because out of seemingly nowhere another figure has appeared, donning a black cloak and mask and killing all of the remaining Abyss Mages in one fell swoop. Eula draws in a sharp breath, about to protest at the stranger because she clearly had it covered, and that was hers. Who does this man—she assumes it’s a man, based on the set of his shoulders and his sheer audacity—think he is, rushing in and depriving her of her well-earned stress relief like that? Who is this man, anyway?
Sheathing her claymore and muttering under her breath, Eula swears a solemn oath of vengeance. Mark her words, this man will be found out. And when she finds him, Eula is going to give him hell.
Chapter Text
Something that most people should know by now is that when Eula Lawrence is on a mission, she will not let anything get in her way, including work. Kaeya and Albedo seem to have everything under control, anyway, and there wasn’t too much collateral damage to the city itself, so why should Eula busy herself doing useless paperwork or something equally pointless when she could be getting to the bottom of this far more pressing issue at hand? She’d had her right to kill a group of Abyss Mages deprived of her by a lone vigilante, for Barbatos’s sake. So, as soon as she has set her things down in her office, she wastes no time in walking next door and barging in without knocking.
When she steps into the room, Albedo looks up, mildly surprised. Kaeya, who is sitting on the desk, for some reason, waves.
“Morning, Captain,” he says with far too much energy for someone who probably pulled an all-nighter in this very building. “What brings you in here today?”
On a normal day, Eula would’ve asked what the hell Kaeya is doing in Albedo’s office, but today is far from a normal day. And besides, he’s smart as a whip and wickedly good at solving investigations, regardless of the fact that investigation is not his department, so she figures his presence is something of a blessing in and of itself.
“I’d like to open an investigation,” Eula declares, wasting no time with pleasantries.
Albedo nods, then turns to Kaeya. “At the other desk there should be a red notebook. Can you bring that here, please?”
“Don’t bother,” Eula says as Kaeya is about to get up from the desk. “I want this off-the-books.”
Albedo raises an eyebrow then. “Very well, then. What is the nature of your investigation?”
Eula clears her throat and tosses her hair behind her shoulder, bringing herself up to her fullest height. “Last night, I was taking a walk along the city’s outskirts,” she begins. “I came across a group of Electro Abyss Mages—two or three of them, I’d estimate—and I decided that I would work off some steam by killing them.”
Kaeya nods. “Right. And this is an investigatory matter how, exactly?”
“Because,” Eula continues, her tone impatient, “just as I was about to kill the first of them—and I had this situation under perfect control, may I add—a masked and hooded man swooped in and killed all of them.”
Albedo’s expression is completely vacant, and Kaeya wears an expression of faint amusement. Eula clenches her hands into fists. “What is so funny about this, Captain?”
“Nothing,” says Kaeya, “I just fail to see how this is a matter worthy of investigation, when it seems to be little more than you once more starting personal beef with yet another citizen of this city. The City of Freedom, may I add, wherein people technically are allowed to seek vigilante justice against the Abyss.”
“It’s not personal beef,” Eula scoffs, at which both Kaeya and Albedo raise an eyebrow. She sighs. “Okay, maybe it is. But still, I need you two to help me figure out who this man is.”
“And why do you need us to get involved?” Albedo asks. “What he is doing is perfectly legal, as Kaeya pointed out. I see no wrongdoing on his part, based on the story you have recounted.”
“Because I had the situation under control!” Eula exclaims. “I could’ve handled it myself, and he could’ve found some other Abyss Mages to kill! Those were mine!”
“Hmm. Seems petty,” Kaeya remarks.
Eula rolls her eyes and mentally rescinds any previous gratitude that Kaeya had been in the room for this conversation; clearly, the man exists purely to piss her off. “Okay, fine,” she says. “If you two won’t help me, I’ll figure it out myself.”
Without another word, Eula turns on her heel and leaves Albedo’s office to do exactly that.
As Mondstadt’s best (and only) Outrider, it’s generally a pretty safe assumption that Amber has seen, and therefore, knows pretty much everything. And, as Eula’s best friend, it’s also generally a pretty safe assumption that Amber will tell Eula pretty much everything, so naturally Eula’s next step after the completely underwhelming failure that was talking to Albedo and Kaeya is to go find Amber.
After spending the entire morning agonizing over the paperwork Jean had left on her desk—Amber is usually on patrol in the mornings, and thus it would’ve been near impossible to find her—Eula clocks out of headquarters for lunch, knowing Amber’s own morning duties should be ending right about now. As expected, she finds Amber seated at her usual table at Good Hunter, digging into a sticky honey roast that smells like it’s fresh out of the oven. Amber waves.
“Hey, Eula!” She gestures to the food in front of her. “Wanna share?”
Eula nods, pulling out the chair beside Amber. “Sure,” she agrees, picking up a spare fork and knife and cutting off a piece of the juicy meat.
“How was your morning?” Amber asks cheerily. “I wasn’t really up to much; patrol has been really quiet since the attack—just a few Hilichurl camps here and there, nothing out of the ordinary.”
“Uneventful,” answers Eula, because it technically isn’t a lie. Visiting Albedo and Kaeya yielded pretty much nothing, other than a confirmation of the long-held information that Kaeya is a little shit hell-bent on making the lives of everyone around him exponentially more difficult. “That said, I did want to ask you something.”
“Oh, no,” Amber starts. “Did Lisa start another ridiculous rumor? Please tell me no.”
“She didn’t,” Eula reassures her, to which Amber responds with a sigh of relief. “But I met someone last night…” Eula then proceeds to recount the story of her encounter with the mysterious man the night before, careful not to leave out a single detail. “Do you know who he could be?” she asks finally.
Amber bites her lip, deliberating her next words. “Not exactly,” she says finally.
Eula frowns. “What do you mean, ‘not exactly’?”
“I mean, I don’t know his real name; no one does. His identity is a mystery, but everyone in Mondstadt knows of him.”
“Well, clearly not everyone, otherwise we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Eula saws off another piece of the sticky honey roast with perhaps a little more aggression than intended. “So who is he?”
Amber leans forward, then, her voice dropping to a low and conspiratorial whisper. “Tell me, Eula; have you ever heard the tale of the Darknight Hero?”
Chapter Text
Sister Rosaria is one of the last people Diluc would have expected to find on his doorstep at eleven o’clock at night. And yet, in spite of this fact, it is Sister Rosaria who has graced Diluc with her presence this evening, leaving Diluc utterly confused.
“Rosaria, what are you doing at my house?” he asks, trying not to sound too accusatory. Reasonably speaking, she probably just wants to discuss something about their individual vigilante work, given the time, but it’s still more than a bit off-putting to have the church’s most intimidating sister on one’s doorstep.
“I came to relay a bit of information I overheard,” she answers, casting a cursory glance to her periphery to ensure a lack of unwanted listeners.
Diluc nods, gesturing inside. “Sure. Come on in.”
Rosaria waves off the invitation. “No need; I’ll be quick.” She clears her throat. “Long story short, I heard from Kaeya that someone came to him and Albedo earlier today looking to investigate the Darknight Hero’s identity. Later, I overheard Eula not-so-discreetly asking around about said character. Figured I’d let you know so you can keep your guard up.”
Diluc nods again, frowning. Why on earth would Eula want to know who he is, of all people? He’s hardly ever had any interaction with her, outside of the occasional brief exchanges when he’s picking up shifts at the tavern. His mind briefly recalls the night before, when he’d cleared a group of Electro Abyss Mages a lone woman had been fighting, but that couldn’t have been her—the woman he’d seen was using exclusively physical attacks, and to his knowledge, Eula wields a Cryo Vision. So why…
“Why is she looking for me?” Diluc asks.
Rosaria shrugs. “I’ve told you everything I know,” she says. “If you want to know more, you’re better off asking Kaeya and Albedo. They’re the ones Eula went to first; they probably know a lot more than I can tell you. I’m just passing along the message.”
“Very well,” Diluc says. “I appreciate the heads-up.”
Rosaria nods, already turning on her heel to exit Diluc’s property. Clearly, she has no intention of staying here any longer than is absolutely necessary—it’s a sentiment Diluc respects. “No problem,” she says. “See you around.”
“Sure,” Diluc says, his mind already drifting away from Rosaria to focus on the warning she had given him. What he needs to do next is far from being something he would normally do, but normalcy went out the window the moment Rosaria turned up on Diluc’s doorstep, so to hell with it. He’s going to Kaeya’s house. He prays he won’t regret it.
Diluc is greeted at Kaeya’s door with a sword at his throat. Not altogether unsurprising, to be fair. Plenty of people have tried to break into Kaeya’s house in the past year alone—though, Diluc doubts that a potential serial killer would’ve opted to knock on the front door. Still, Kaeya has always had a bit of a paranoid streak, so Diluc puts his hands up in surrender.
“Relax, Kaeya. It’s just me.”
Slowly—almost reluctantly, even, though perhaps Diluc is imagining things—Kaeya lowers his blade. “Who died?” he asks, which, again, is both an unsurprising and perfectly fair question, because it’s not like Diluc just shows up at Kaeya’s house close to midnight just to say hi.
“No one died,” Diluc assures him. “Can I come in?”
Kaeya nods, finally opening the door more than two inches to allow Diluc to enter. “Sorry about that,” he says, gesturing to the couch. “You can never be too sure these days, but feel free to make yourself at home.”
“Thank you,” Diluc says stiffly, taking a seat on the plush couch in the living room. He nods in the direction of the other man seated on the couch, curled beneath a blanket. “Hello, Albedo.”
“Hey, Diluc,” Albedo says. “Are you here about the whole Darknight Hero thing?”
Straight to the point. Normally, Diluc would like that, except…
“How do you know I’m the Darknight Hero?” he demands, then turns towards Kaeya. “Did you tell him?”
“He did not need to tell me anything,” Albedo answers coolly. “I figured out who you were the first week you showed up on the scene, with how poor a job you do of concealing your identity.”
Diluc blinks. He knew Albedo was supposed to be smart, but wow. He isn’t sure whether to be impressed or offended right now. He opts for a bit of both. “Right,” he says. “But if I did as bad a job at concealing my identity as you say, then how come no one else has figured it out yet?”
“Because,” Kaeya says, entering the living room with a fresh cup of tea, “most of the people in this city are idiots who don’t bother to pay attention to their surroundings.”
“Fair point.” Diluc accepts the tea. “And you are correct, Albedo; that is why I am here.”
“What do you need to know?” Albedo asks.
“As much information as you can give me.”
“Very well. Kaeya, would you like to explain, or should I?”
“I got it,” Kaeya says, taking a seat on a nearby armchair. “So, what happened is, earlier today Eula showed up in Albedo’s office right at the start of the work day and demanded he open up an off-the-record investigation. I happened to be in the room at the time, so I ended up being privy to this whole conversation. Anyway, Eula went on to tell us that she needed to figure out the identity of a masked and hooded man she had run into the night before. You following so far?” Kaeya doesn’t wait for Diluc to give an affirmative nod before continuing. “Right, so, anyway, she went on this whole tirade about how she had been fighting some Abyss Mages and then out of nowhere some guy appeared and killed them, and she was super offended by that for some reason, you know how she is, and now she’s sworn vengeance against you and is on a frenzied manhunt to figure out who you are.”
Well, that’s a lot to take in. Diluc stays quiet for a moment to allow the information Kaeya had just delivered to properly process in his brain, then clears his throat. “I’m sorry, what?”
“Were you not listening—”
“No, I understand what’s going on, but holy shit, why is she so—”
“Extreme?” Albedo suggests helpfully. “Yeah, she’s just like that. You two would get along quite well, actually.”
“Hm, yeah, I can see that,” agrees Kaeya. “Which is one of the reasons why I think that no matter how much you stall, she’s gonna figure you out eventually.”
Albedo nods. “Yes, she does not fall into the ‘unobservant idiot’ demographic described earlier.”
“Okay, so what do we do, then?” Diluc asks. Enough people know who he is already; he really doesn’t need yet another person figuring it out.
Kaeya leans forward then, his fingers steepled against his thighs and a conspiratorial smirk on his lips. “Don’t worry; I have a plan.”
Chapter Text
Over the past two weeks, Eula has, in her opinion, completely broken even in terms of productivity, because while the loose ends from the recent incident with Albedo’s body double and the Abyss invasion have been all but tied up, she has made very little headway regarding her investigation into this so-called “Darknight Hero”.
It’s not that she hasn’t found clues, of course, but the clues she has found have been frustratingly vague, with no indication towards the man’s actual identity. That said, everything she has found does point strongly to a location—a location which Eula fully intends to visit tonight. Even if the Darknight Hero doesn’t actually show up—which Eula is willing to admit is a very real possibility—she’s still certain that there will be at least two or three Fatui soldiers there for her to work out her frustration on. The intel she has gathered has made that much clear, at least.
With a quick glance behind her to ensure she isn’t being followed, Eula slips through the side gate and beyond Mondstadt’s walls. It’s been a long time coming, now—tonight, she will find out once and for all who the Darknight Hero is. And once she does, she will give him a taste of her vengeance, because no one deprives Eula Lawrence of a good fight.
As expected, Eula’s intel proved correct—just past the bridge over Cider Lake leading into Windrise, she comes upon a lone Geochanter Bracer. It strikes her as strange, for a moment, that this Fatuus is traveling alone—don’t they usually travel in groups of two or three?—but Eula has never been one to look a gift horse in the mouth, and just one skirmisher as opposed to three will be a much easier fight. Just enough to work up a healthy sweat, she assumes, already leveling her claymore in her hands.
The Geochanter Bracer notices her approaching, steeling himself as he brandishes his staff. He circles around her for a moment, seemingly assessing her strength, then slams his staff into the ground with a burst of Geo energy, simultaneously shielding himself and knocking Eula backwards.
Light on her feet, Eula recovers quickly, dancing around the swing of the Fatuus’s staff and landing a hit with her claymore against the shield. Another perk of physical damage, she notes. The skirmisher doubles back in surprise, evidently surprised to see an allogene such as herself foregoing elemental power entirely. Eula takes advantage of his distraction to land another hit against his shield.
As if suddenly realizing that his shield is already at half power and he can’t stay on the defensive forever, the Geochanter Bracer slams his staff into the ground again, sending yet another ripple of Geo energy that bursts forth and knocks Eula to her feet. Still, she takes advantage of this to catch the Fatuus off-guard and sweep her claymore towards his legs, finally cutting through the shield and into the fabric of his boots.
The skirmisher cries out, buckling from the impact, and Eula uses this moment of brief disarmament to regain her footing before leveling her claymore and preparing to deliver the finishing blow—
And out of nowhere, a cloaked man with his features obscured by a mask has appeared on the scene, his sword buried deep in the throat of the Fatuus she had very obviously been moments away from killing herself.
Eula turns to glare at the stranger, her fingers clenched tightly around the hilt of her claymore as her eyebrows knit together in the center of her forehead. “Hey, I—”
The stranger simply waves her off without a word, then kneels down beside the Geochanter Bracer’s corpse to investigate. Eula huffs, but makes a show of leaving, only to duck behind a nearby tree a safe distance away.
She watches as the Darknight Hero continues to kneel beside the body, leaning in close to its face for a moment before unceremoniously scooping it up into his arms and turning to walk towards the city.
Frowning, Eula begins to follow, staggering her footsteps so they might be mistaken for an animal’s, should they be overheard. The Darknight Hero, strangely, continues to walk closer and closer to the city with the Fatuus corpse still draped like a bride in his arms—though, the dead weight of the body makes it more akin to a sack of potatoes. The stranger detours towards the side entrance, because of course he does, he’s carrying a dead body, and Eula follows closely behind him, using the walls as cover.
Eventually, the stranger stops at a house in the upper city and fishes a set of keys from his pocket, and Eula has to put a hand over her mouth to stifle her gasp, because just what the fuck is going on?
Then, of course, she slips into the house through the open door just before it’s closed, and it can’t even be an intrusion because it’s not like she hasn’t been here before—the house that the stranger arrived at is the home of none other than Kaeya Alberich.
Chapter Text
Now is the second time in the past two weeks that Diluc finds himself at Kaeya’s house, and this time is much stranger than the last. This time, Diluc finds himself lurking in Kaeya’s bedroom, listening to the conversation taking place in the living room through the impossibly thin walls—no doubt a deliberate choice, on Kaeya’s part. Aside from the fact that him being in Kaeya’s house at all is incredibly abnormal, let alone twice in two weeks, the conversation he is listening in on has to be one of the most outrageous conversations he’s heard in quite a while.
“How did you know I was following you?” Eula is demanding to know, and even though Diluc can’t see her face, he’s certain the expression she’s wearing is one of fury.
Kaeya scoffs, and Diluc imagines him rolling his eye. “You’re not exactly subtle, darling.”
“So then why did you let me into your house, if you knew I was there?”
“To avoid making a scene,” Kaeya explains calmly. “I knew the alternative was listening to you try and break down my door at this ungodly hour, and the last thing any of us want is the neighbors getting curious.”
“‘Any of us’?” Eula repeats. “Are there more people in here than just you and me? Speaking of which, where’s the body?”
Diluc blanches. A body? Just what the hell—
“I’m right here,” Albedo chimes in. Right; Diluc had forgotten about that part of the plan.
“Albedo?” Eula draws a sharp breath, then redirects her attention to Kaeya. “Okay, just what the hell is going on here?”
“You wanted to know who the Darknight Hero is,” Kaeya says. “Here I am.”
“And you couldn’t have just told me like a normal fucking person?”
“Would you have believed me, if I had?”
Eula scoffs. “No, of course not. Hell, I don’t even believe you right now.”
“Well, you ought to start,” Albedo says. “I figured it out ages ago; when you really stop and think about it, it’s quite obvious.”
“No it’s not!” Eula groans. “All this proves is that both of you know who it is, and neither of you respect me enough to tell me the truth!”
“Why, Eula, you wound me,” interjects Kaeya, and Diluc rolls his eyes. He likely has his fingers splayed across his chest in a dramatic gesture of mock hurt, playing up the act to the point of absurdity. “What makes you think I’m lying?”
“Because any reasonable human wouldn’t have gone to all this effort to stage this—whatever this is, some elaborate prank—just to tell me something two weeks later when you could’ve just told me when I asked!”
“And tell me, Eula: when have you ever known me to be a reasonable person?”
A beat of silence. “Okay, but this is too much, even for you.” Diluc assumes she has rounded on Albedo when she adds, “And I watched him stab you! Through the throat!”
This is getting out of hand. He may not show it, but Kaeya is quickly running thin on excuses, and sooner or later, Eula will snap and the truth will get out one way or another. Might as well make it clean, and spare Kaeya and Albedo the trouble of further bluffing. He steps out of Kaeya’s bedroom, and clears his throat.
Kaeya’s head immediately snaps in Diluc’s direction, his visible eye widened in shock. “Diluc, what are you—”
“Eula,” Diluc says, deliberately ignoring Kaeya, “it’s me.”
Eula frowns. “What do you mean, ‘it’s you’?”
“The Darknight Hero,” Diluc clarifies. “It’s me.”
Eula opens her mouth to say something, but the fire seems to die in her throat. “Oh.”
“Kaeya and Albedo were lying to you in order to protect my identity,” continues Diluc, “but at this point, I feel like you deserve to know.”
Eula nods, carefully avoiding Diluc’s gaze. “I see.”
Behind her, Kaeya clears his throat. “Ah, Eula, what happened to exacting your vengeance?”
Eula ignores him. “How come they know?” she asks, gesturing to Kaeya and Albedo.
“I never intended for anyone to know, actually,” Diluc admits. “They both figured it out on their own.”
“Like I said,” Albedo repeats, “you’re entirely too obvious.”
Diluc ignores the comment, his attention remaining fixed on Eula. “Look, Eula, no one can know about this. No one.”
Eula nods. “The secret remains in this room; you have my word.”
“Thank you.” Diluc reaches up to scratch the back of his neck, casting his gaze towards the hardwood floor beneath his feet before swallowing hard. “You’re a good fighter, though,” he says slowly, almost as if he’s carefully selecting each word before he says it—which isn’t too far from the truth, to be fair.
“Thank you,” Eula says, nodding her head forward. Say what else you have to say.
Diluc clears his throat. “Well, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone to watch my back.”
Eula raises an eyebrow. “Like a partner?”
“Yeah,” Diluc says, lips curling into an almost imperceptible smile. “Like a partner.”
Chapter 6: Epilogue
Chapter Text
There are occasions wherein upon Kaeya’s entrance into the Angel’s Share, he takes great care to make his presence known—those occasions, namely, being nights when Diluc Ragnvindr happens to be working the bar.
Tonight is one of those such nights, and perhaps Kaeya will make a point of seeing Diluc once every two weeks, because here they are again, making quite a pattern of this. He saunters up to the bar and orders a Death After Noon, plastering on a wide grin that suggests he knows more than he lets on. He doesn’t, really, but a falsely knowing grin gets you places. People assume you know things you don’t, and tell you things they shouldn’t. Lips are looser, secrets flow freer. A plastic smile and a silver tongue—these are Kaeya’s weapons of choice.
And Diluc, being the impossibly stubborn man that he is, is having none of it. He pours the freshly mixed drink into a tall champagne glass and slides it across the table, which Kaeya accepts with a wink—or a blink; one can never be too sure. And that’s another thing: it’s alwoys good to keep the people on their feet. Keep them wondering.
“So good to see you again,” Kaeya says, his voice smooth as ever. “How have you been?”
Diluc rolls his eyes. “Get to the point, Kaeya.”
Of course, Diluc has never been one for small talk. Kaeya knows this well, naturally, and leans forward across the bar as he casts a perfunctory glance around them before lowering his voice to a baritone whisper. “How about your recent partnership?” he asks. “Inquiring minds would like to know how that’s working for you.”
“It’s fine,” Diluc says curtly. “Eula and I see eye-to-eye on a good many things, which I appreciate. She’s got a good head on her shoulders—it’s more than I can say about you, at least.”
Kaeya raises an eyebrow. “Ah, two compliments back-to-back? She must be something truly special…” He winks again, then goes in for the kill. “You know…if you really wanted a partnership, Rosaria has been protecting this city for about as long as you have, as I’m sure you well know…so, tell me again: what is it about Miss Eula which raises her so far above all the others?”
“Nothing,” Diluc says quickly. “Also, I’m pretty sure Rosaria hates me.”
Kaeya lets out a light hum of acknowledgment before raising his glass to his lips. “Very well,” he says, taking careful note of the rosy tint that has now graced Diluc’s cheeks.
Perhaps Kaeya will have to conduct an investigation of his own.
