The Mutual Understanding of Silence

Work Text:

The only noise that filled Teardrop's lone room in the hotel was the sound of a keyboard's typing, but not any keyboard. No, these were the keys of a typewriter, and what was being typed up was none other than another comic to send back to the Pillary Ruins. Teardrop had a method to what most would consider her madness: she'd type up a first draft of a comic, get a certain someone to proof-read, and re-do the comic page if there were flaws until it was perfect and up to standard. She was nowhere near far into this comic, just a page or two in, when the door cracked open to her proof-reader.

Eggy was pretty much the only one who would barge into Teardrop's room willingly on the average day. She loved Teardrop's comics, and moreover, although afraid to actually state this part, was in love with Teardrop as a whole. No one really cared for Teardrop within the TPOT cast, so it was a nice change of pace. Teardrop's real only friends were a few from the Pillary Ruins, who she left behind to join TPOT. Eggy, meanwhile, felt isolated in her team, and for a good reason.

The Strongest Team On Earth wasn't the nicest group of teammates, comparative to that of Death P.A.C.T. and Team8s. They were at the very least functional without a leadership problem (like that of A Better Name Than That back in Pre-Split BFB). Well, maybe that's a bit of a stretch on the leadership problem stuff, as Basketball oftentimes would prioritize Robot Flower over her own team and leave Eggy in charge (something she, in fact, could not handle, especially being thrown onto her). And that's why Eggy had come to crash in Teardrop's room, the two could sit in silence without any troubles if Eggy didn't feel like venting, or if she did, she could, and even if Teardrop was deep into a comic, she'd listen.

The two's friendship had a bit of a rocky start, with Eggy first listening to Lollipop and Pillow's influence on what Teardrop was trying to say. But after a few challenges, Eggy decided to tell her story anyways, no matter if Teardrop cared or not. And instead of what Eggy expected, whether it be being brushed off or not even listened too, Teardrop was extremely attentive the entire time, from the way her eyes shined to her body language. And that got Eggy thinking: was Lollipop and Pillow even right? As she thought further, the more she realized the answer was no.

After that, Eggy made a vow to get closer to Teardrop. But when they decided to go to two different shows, Eggy accepted she'd be unable to connect to Teardrop for a long while. Eggy didn't mind, though, she wanted Teardrop to be happy, but after they reconnected, Teardrop told Eggy (through paper notes and whiteboards) about all of her escapades in the Pillary Ruins. Meanwhile, Eggy would talk about the (limited) TPOT experiences, although it usually turned to venting about TSTOE. But, that genuinely started a bond like no other between the two of them, even if anyone outside of the two of them thought it was weird.

Eggy flopped down on Teardrop's bed, listening to her friend type away on the typewriter in the room. This was one of those things that wasn't weird at all for the two of them, as when it came to this, Eggy actually would usually vent while laying on Teardrop's bed. Half the time, Teardrop would fall asleep at her desk anyways, up way later than most of the contestants to make comics. Eggy never slept over anyways, she'd only usually be in there for an hour or two. But, sometimes, there were days like today, where Eggy wanted nothing more than to listen to Teardrop type away.

Silence was never deafening for either of them. Teardrop, for one, was quite literally silent, so she was consistently used to silence. Meanwhile, Eggy had a deep understanding that Teardrop's silence wasn't rude. Silence was actually natural to them more than noise was. There was no need for them to talk to each other like everyone else. They had their methods of communication, they didn't need the noise of one's voice to communicate their care. Oftentimes, it was just the actions the two would take for each other that was fully enough.

Teardrop knew that Eggy simply wanted to listen to her type away, and so she did. It was their mutual quality time together, even if most couldn't see it.

Notes:

I have a list of ships/fic ideas that are over TWO sticky notes. I need to catch up with these lists... like REALLY catch up with my ideas. So, this is one out of twenty-two things I have written down that I need to write. And that's not even including a longfic idea I have, going back to work on YGSSIMH, working on my BFB AU, all of that stuff. These ideas can fit into one-shots and I still really have to catch up on my ficathon as well, so... there's a lot I have.
