Chapter Text
“You got a letter in the mail” said Enid, walking into the two girls’ shared dorm. Wednesday outstretched a hand to take the letter from her -while painful to admit- best friend.
“Who’s it from?“
“Dunno. Doesn’t say”
Wednesday examined the letter, then unstuck the wax seal keeping it closed. Her eyes fell on the familiar handwriting, though she couldn’t place where she’d seen it before.
“You’re probably wondering why I’m writing to you. Figured this was the best option instead of waiting for the next semester. My “elitist snob” father decided to go on a tour around the globe for “personal reasons” which just means he wants more money. To answer why I’m writing to you – I heard about everything that happened and figured I’d come back to Nevermore for the rest of my education. Writing to you to say this felt somehow natural to me, so that’s why you’ve received this.
-Xavier Thorpe
“Well, who’s it from?” asked Enid, wheels turning in her head as to what could happen next.
“It’s from Xavier. He’s coming back to Nevermore next semester.” Wednesday put the letter in her pocket, which surprised Enid. Her roommate usually threw away any mail she got, even if it wasn’t hers.
Enid picked up her suitcase and turned to the door.
“We should get going, my mom is probably wondering where we are”
“I agree.”
The girls left their dorm, Lurch following behind them. They passed Bianca and Ajax while walking to the quad, Enid giving them both a polite smile. Both their families were waiting, quite far away from each-other. Wednesday watched in slight disgust as her brother received jars of honey from his boyfriend Eugene. He had the biggest smile she had ever seen on someone’s face. Her parents bought Pugsley a phone during that semester, which she originally planned to throw against a wall. Pathetic.
“There she is! How are you my little raven?” asked her father, pulling her into a tight hug she desperately wanted to be free from. The smell of his cologne filled her nostrils, almost making her puke.
“I’m fine. Let’s go.” She turned to walk to the car, where her mother was waiting. They exchanged not a single word, instead sitting in an uncomfortable silence.
Wednesday couldn’t stop thinking about the letter she had received from Xavier. Why was she so attached to this thought? It was a question she both wanted and didn’t want an answer to. Her thoughts were deafening in her mind, making her unable to focus on anything else, which resulted in her not realizing when they got back to the Addams Family Manor. Entering her room, she removed the letter from her pocket. She must’ve read it about a hundred times before it clicked. He wanted to be her friend.
He wanted to be her friend?.... She wasn’t able to wrap her head around the idea. Why would he want to be her friend, especially after she accused him of murder and made him spend the night in jail? Nevertheless, she placed the letter next to her typewriter and went to sleep.
Their winter break passed by in a flash of underwhelming events, if you can count her brother almost burning down the house as underwhelming. Still, that letter never got thrown out, instead getting lost in a stack of books and being shoved into one of her suitcases.
She turned to Lurch, who had just finished packing her typewriter into her case. “That’s everything. Thank you.”
Wednesday had a peculiar feeling while traveling to her school. She couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was, yet she brushed it off as annoyance.
